What’s new in the world of
TK?
TK Amended Ed Code 48000(c)
● TK eligibility: A child whose 5th birthday is between September 2 & December 2
● A school district or charter school may admit a child to a TK program who will have his or her fifth birthday after December 2nd, but during that same school year.
(CDE defines a school year as July 1 - June 30)
● Average Daily Attendance (ADA) can be claimed for these students once they attain the age of five
Expanded TK - Things to Consider
● Is admittance in the best interest of the child? ● Does parent/guardian have information
regarding the advantages and disadvantages?
● When can we claim Average Daily Attendance (ADA) for these students?
A new resource from School Service of California: Expanded TK Cost-Benefit Calculator
● The Calculator enables you to enter common factors about your district or charter to estimate the potential expenses and revenue of expanding TK.
● The tool will automatically save the data you have submitted, making it easy to look back at your projections.

Expanded TK Opportunities
● Shrink opportunity and achievement gaps
● Refine instruction by reducing “combo” classes
● Reduce downstream costs ● Optimize state resources ● Mitigate declining enrollment
Credential teachers who are first assigned to a TK classroom after July 1, 2015 must have one of the following by August 2020:● A minimum of 24 units in early childhood education, childhood
development, or both.● A child development teacher permit issued by the CTC.
● Professional experience in a classroom setting with preschool age children that is comparable to the 24 units of education described above.
● Any current credentialed teacher who was assigned to teach TK, or a combination class of kindergarten and TK, on or before 7/1/15, is “grandfathered in” to teach TK without having to meet additional requirements
Impact of SB 876 on TK Teacher Requirements
California Transitional Kindergarten Stipend (CTKS)● 2014-15 Budget Education Act allocated funds for Local Planning Councils to
support teacher educational requirements.
● Funds make it possible for TK teachers to receive reimbursement for educational costs linked to the new educational requirements for TK educators.
● Local Planning Councils disburse the funds through a local model that meets
the needs of TK teachers across school districts within the county.
● Sonoma County Child Care Planning Council provides TK teachers with reimbursement opportunities for approved:
- Unit bearing course work (Tuition, registration costs, books)- CDE Approved Professional Development Courses- Registration costs for approved conferences
