Translate Your GC Methods From Helium To Hydrogen
……Reliably and Safely
Helium was once plentiful and cheap. Supplies are going down and the cost keeps going up
1. Operate GCs at lower head pressures because H2 is about half as viscous as He
2. H2 is about as efficient as He
3. H2 can be made by electrolysis of H2O – generate your own!
Convert GCs from helium to hydrogen carrier gas:
Two considerations when making this change : 1. Your chromatogram will
change if the instrument settings are not optimized for H2
2. Hydrogen is explosive!
1. Adjustments to instrument settings are needed to accommodate the different separation of H2
2. New data will not match historical data if the chromatograms cannot
Consideration #1: He ≠ H2
be reproduced
Working out new instrument settings is time-consuming (= expensive)
Consideration #2: Explosion risk using hydrogen as the carrier gas is worrisome for lab managers, lab owners, and GC operators
Help is on the way!
METHOD TRANSLATOR
DVLS3 Simply, Smart Sensor
EMT will reliably translate your method and reproduce your chromatogram
DVLS3 will constantly monitor your GC oven for H2
We have what you need!
Let’s take a look at
METHOD TRANSLATOR
…and translate a method from helium
to hydrogen
To start the translation, set the column parameters for the new method to be the same as the original method
The original method settings are entered in the left column, new column dimensions and carrier gas are entered in the right column.
Select H2 instead of helium
EMT translates from He to H2: At equal head pressure peak height ratios change
Twice as fast but different chromatogram
EMT translates from He to H2: At optimum there is 24% speed gain
With lower head pressure the H2 and He chromatograms overlay
By adjusting the head pressure and temperature ramp as per EMT’s recommendation, you should be able to duplicate the chromatogram you were getting with helium.
Now let’s tackle that safety issue
DVLS3 Simply, Smart Sensor
The new DVLS3 Sensor constantly monitors the H2 concentration in the GC oven
It automatically switches to an inert gas if dangerous H2 levels are detected
The DVLS3 is easy to install and is compatible with all GCs
It supports up to 4 sensors: •Hydrogen •Hydrogen as Leak Detector •Temperature •Level (liquid) weight
The Gas Sensor is integrated in the GC oven. The carrier gas switch and LCD display are in an external controller.
Select from multiple alarm methods:
•Optical
•Acoustic
•SMS text message
There you have it!
