Toolkits for Diversity
The Toolkits for Diversity in Pre-School, Primary, Special and Post-Primary Education have been written to support staff who are working with Newcomer pupils in each of these sectors. The toolkits provide advice on providing for the needs of Newcomer pupils and their families. They cover the following areas:
Getting ready: Welcome and communication with home
Early Days: Providing for pupils’ pastoral and academic needs in the first weeks and months
Assessment and Planning: Monitoring Newcomer pupils’ progress and planning for language development
Curriculum access: Planning for language learning through the curriculum for pupils at different stages of language development
Preparing for exams (post-primary): Familiarising Newcomer students with exam choices, courses and the language needed for these
Intercultural Awareness: Creating an intercultural ethos that is embedded in everyday practice and the curriculum
Benchmarking KitsBenchmarking kits have been designed to assist teachers in lower and upper primary and in post-primary to identify what Newcomer pupils can do in English when they first arrive in the school and to help monitor progress thereafter. These should be used in conjunction with classroom observations and other assessments.
The activities in the Benchmarking Kits are mapped against the benchmarks based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
There are also benchmarking kits for Maths for upper primary and post-primary.
Ways of SeeingIn the last decade, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have experienced a rapid increase in immigration which has resulted in their education systems facing the challenge and opportunity of integrating increasing numbers of Newcomer pupils.
The ‘Ways of Seeing’ resources for primary and post-primary provide practical activities to promote intercultural awareness through everyday practice and the curriculum in schools.
