Adrian Plesca is a young blogger from Chișinău, Moldova and the general
coordinator of the biggest urban project there. He is the vice president of the

Blogger and lawyer, Minsk
Alena Baltrukevich is a practitioner lawyer. She raised controversial and
significant topics of Belarusian legislation in her blog. Its materials are dedicated
mostly to questions of Labour and Civil law. The aim of her work is increasing
awareness of legislation in Belarusian society and making people discuss
problems and think about alternative ways to solve it. Motto of her blog is –
“Think, speak and argue”.

Alexandra Reinig is an intern at euro|topics since September 2015. She studies
Sociology in Bielefeld. During her studies she spent time in Russia and Finland.
// Amalia Oganjanyan
Lecturer and freelance journalist (Deutsche Welle), Tbilisi
Amalia Oganjanyan works as lecturer at the Mass Communication Department of
the Tbilisi State University (TSU), as correspondent for the Deutsche Welle-
Russian, and as Georgian project manager for the Deutsche Welle Academy.
Since September 2014, a PhD student (Mass Communication Department, TSU).
She has a MA in International Media Studies from the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg
University. Since 2003 she has been working for Georgian, German, Russian, and
Armenian media. She authored the book "The August War in Georgia: Foreign
Media Coverage" (Diplomica: Hamburg, 2012).

Andrea Dernbach studied German language and literature studies and history in
Mainz and Freiburg. After attending Henri- Nannen-School in Hamburg she was
correspondent in Bonn, senior news editor of Badische Zeitung and Stuttgarter
Zeitung and senior politics editor of Der Tagesspiegel. Since 2012 she is political
reporter at Der Tagesspiegel. Her main interests are migragtion, civil rights,
gender policy and diversity.

Andreas Bock is senior editor for the euro|topics press review. Before coming to
n-ost, Andreas spent three years working as a cultural manager at the Institute for
Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) and as a project manager for MitOst in Budapest.
He studied cultural studies and social studies at the European University Viadrina
Frankfurt (Oder), Berlin's Free University and the University of California,
Berkeley, and believes that Europe's future lies in the regions.

Angela Phillips is a Professor in Journalism at Goldsmiths, University of London.
She ran the journalism courses at Goldsmiths for a number of years and now
researches and lectures on the subject of journalism. Her most recent book is
“Journalism in Context” (Routledge) which was written for students of journalism
practice. Currently she is involved in research into audience behaviour,
particularly the way in which young people find and use news today.

Ani Hovhannisyan is a multimedia journalist at "Investigative Journalists of
Armenia" NGO, which publishes Hetq Online Newspaper. She works at Hetq since
2009 firstly as blogger and later as investigative multimedia skilled journalist. She
is very interested in data journalism, data visualization and cross-border
investigations.

Freelance journalist and blogger, Kyiv
Anna Romandash is a freelance journalist who writes for a media watch platform
Mediasapiens as well as for the variety of Ukrainian and international media.
Besides, she is member of the editorial team of the Orange Magazine, funded by
the Council of Europe. She studies Corporate Communications at the Danish
School of Media and Journalism and works on her M.A. in Media Communications
at Ukrainian Catholic University.

Anna Zerika is a producer and agent. In 2005 she joined Photographer.ru
representing Russian artists worldwide and international agencies including
Magnum Photos within Russia, becoming its managing director in 2008. In 2011
she founded Salt Images agency. She joined Screen Projects in 2014. She curated
a number exhibitions (selected) Stories of Life:Best of multimedia journalism
2013, Russian contemporary photography at Dali International festival 2013. Anna
served as a nominator and jury member worldwide, including the World Press
Photo Multimedia contest 2012.

// Annette Streicher
Reporter and editor (ZDF), Berlin
Annette Streicher is a Berlin-based editor and reporter. She works with public
broadcaster ZDF, Deutsche Welle and print media. Annette has a M.A.
International Journalism, with focus on documentary. Studies in political science,
sociology and dramatic art at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, Stockholm
University, University of Westminster. She worked for Süddeutsche Zeitung, dpa,
N24 and ZDF London and did field research in Eastern European countries such as
Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Bosnia. She received a travel writer’s grant for
Israel/Palestinian territories in 2010/2015 and was trained picture editor at Berlin-
based photo agency school Ostkreuz.

Annika Gläser joined n-ost in August 2015 as a project coordinator for the
investigative network “n-vestigate”. From 2008 to 2012 she was project manager
and member of the board at the German Youthpress. Until 2015 she studied
cultural sciences at Viadrina University in Frankfurt.
// Arthur Bondar
Photographer, Moscow
Arthur Bondar is a freelance photographer and shoots his personal documentary
projects. He studied photography at New York University and was a participant of
the Eddie Adams Workshop and NOOR-Nikon Masterclass. Arthur was awarded
and granted with Magnum Emergency Fund, The Documentary Project Fund,
National Geographic Grant and the Best Photographer of the Year in Ukraine. His
projects were widely exhibited as installations, exhibitions and screenings. He is
author of the books “Signatures of War” and “Barricade”.
Nowadays Arthur is a participant of VII Photo Agency Mentor Program.

Freelance correspondent, Istanbul
Arzu Geybullayeva is a freelance writer born and raised in Azerbaijan. Since 2008,
she has been writing as a blogger, correspondent and also doing some analyst
work on the side with her main focus on Azerbaijan. Currently she is based in
Istanbul where she continues focusing on Azerbaijan exposing human rights
violations and stories that often don't get attention in international media. In the
past seven years, she has written numerous articles, contributed to a number of
international reports and continues to speak at international events on Azerbaijan
policies.

Bektour Iskender is one of the founders of Kloop.kg news website and Kloop
Journalism School. Kloop.kg is one of the leading news outlets in Kyrgyzstan
today, famous for its coverage of politics, human rights, and civil society, and also
for introducing innovative methods of telling news by using live streaming and
effectively exploiting social media.It is also one of the few websites in the country
that has started doing exclusive reporting about events happening outside
Kyrgyzstan, with the war in Ukraine being the most famous example of such
coverage.

Carmen Eller works as an author and journalist in Berlin for Zeit Online, Neue
Zürcher Zeitung, Die Welt, Spiegel Geschichte and others. Her main focus is
culture, especially literature from Russia, Eastern Europe, Israel and the United
States. Before moving to Berlin she worked several years as editor and reporter in
Moscow and spent two years as Robert Bosch Fellow in Romania. 2010 Herder
published her book “Ein Jahr in Moskau. Reise in den Alltag“.

Christiane Käsgen has been program officer at the Robert Bosch Stiftung since
2011. Her responsibilities in the program area “International Relations Europe and
its Neighbours” include media and journalism programs involving particulary
Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. She previously worked in Berlin at
InWEnt's International Institute for Journalism, where she developed and
organized dialogue and further training programs for journalists from Asia, Africa
and the Middle East with a focus upon online journalism and media ethics. From
2005 to 2008, she developed and implemented numerous culture and education
projects in Morocco supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Goethe-
Institut.

Dario Bosio is an independent photography professional. He co-founded the
PanAut Collective in 2012 to promote dialogue and exploration around visual
storytelling. He worked at NOOR Images and 10b Photography before starting
freelancing. Darios work as a photographer focuses on international social issues
while questioning the medium of photography itself and the ways in which it
affects our lives. Since March 2015 he has been based in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq,
where he was working as photo-editor and project manager at the Metrography
photo agency. He is one of the two curators of the project “Map of
Displacement”.

Daya Thussu is Professor of International Communication at the University of
Westminster in London. Author or editor of 17 books, among his key publications

// Dmytro Korol

Dmytro Korol is a journalist from Ukraine. He works in the economic department
of the Ukrainian online-media Insider and his main task is to prepare anti-
corruption investigations. Prior to joining Insider he was correspondent for the
news agency UNIAN and wrote investigations for Corruptua. Furthermore, he
writes analytical and political articles about revolutions, reforms, war and all
significant events Ukraine passed through for the last two years.
// Donald Weber
Photographer and author, Amsterdam
Donald Weber is the author of three photography books. Interrogations, about
post-Soviet authority in Ukraine and Russia, has gone on to much acclaim; it was
selected to be included in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger’s seminal “The
Photobook: A History, Volume III.” He is the recipient of numerous awards and
fellowships, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lange-Taylor Prize and two
World Press Photo Awards.
Currently Don is working on his next project, War Sand, about historic sacrifice,
and the meaning of war in our modern world. He is a member of the acclaimed VII
Photo.
// Dóra Diseri
Freelance journalist (Hungarian Public Service), Berlin
Dóra Diseri is a Hungarian freelance journalist based in Berlin and EJF-fellow at
the International Center for Journalism of the Freie Universität Berlin. She
received her M.A. degree at the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest in 2011 in
cultural and media studies. Between 2008 and 2015 Dóra worked as a reporter for
the Hungarian Public Television in the news department. Currently she is working
on her research project "The Hungarian Exodus: Fleeing Orbán's country. Or:
What has become of Europe's 'happiest barack'?"
// Dörthe Ziemer
Freelance journalist (euro|topics, Lausitzer Rundschau, Märkische Allgemeine,
Berliner Zeitung), Groß Köris
Dörthe Ziemer studied Russian studies, German studies and East European
history in Berlin and Moscow. After a traineeship at the Lausitzer Rundschau and
an IJP scholarship in Russia, she worked for three years as a journalist in Lusatia.
This was followed by two years working as an editor and project manager at n-ost
in Berlin. She now works as a freelance project editor and author. She is
euro|topics correspondent in Germany.

Ekaterina Garnik has been working in the field of cultural affairs as an arts
manager, PR consultant, new media adviser, cultural journalist and curator for 10
years. She has participated in more that 50 projects during these years. She is

true. Furthermore she conducts workshops and trainings for writers, bloggers and
creative people of all kinds.
// Fabian Weiss
Photographer, Tallinn
Fabian Weiss is a photographer and visual storyteller based in Estonia and
member of the German photo agency LAIF. His projects explore cultural changes
in personal structures within a broader assessment of the surrounding culture.
Fabian‘s work has been honoured by several international awards and his
photographic essays have been exhibited internationally and published in
numerous media including GEO, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit and The New York Times
amongst others.
Weiss works in Germany, the Baltics and further East.

Florian Bachmeier studied photography in Pamplona, Spain, and History at LMU
of Munich. He is working as a freelance photographer, represented by n-ost. In
2013 and 2014 he has been working on the book “The White Death. Tuberculosis
in Moldova” and on his project about “The Black Sea”.

Assistant at Fink and Fuchs, Wiesbaden
Franziska Hild works for the PR agency Fink and Fuchs in Wiesbaden. She
supports the organizers in the Blogger Workshop Shift_Shape_Mobilze (who will
do the Live Blogging of TRANSLATING WORLDS) and coordinates especially
registration, catering and accommodation. So you can focus on the workshop and
have a relaxed time.

Fruzsina Katona works for Hungary's leading investigative journalism portal,
Átlátszó, where she contributes to the data journalism and the foreign affairs
blog. She is doing her M.A in media and communication. As a hobby, she
particiaptes in various projects in connection with human rights, but mostly about
media freedom.

Hanno Gundert is Managing Director of n-ost since 2010. Before that he did
project development, consulting and training for numerous clients from Eastern
and Western Europe. From 2002 to 2006 Hanno was manager of the German-
Russian Exchange in St. Petersburg. He studied history, politics and German
language and literature in Freiburg, Dublin and Berlin. After seven years in Russia
Hanno moved back to Berlin with his wife and two children in 2008.

Igor Burdyga was born in in Kherson, South Ukraine. At the local university he
studied economics and computer science. In 2007 he moved to Kyiv and began his
career as a journalist in Interfax-Ukraine news agency, where he covered mainly
business news. On the same subject he has worked for the daily newspaper
Kommersant since 2011. In 2013 he started to work in the Vesti.Reporter
magazine, where he thoroughly covered Euromaidan, military conflict in the East
of Ukraine and European refugee crisis in in 2015.

Igor Zinatulin is head of strategy at London-based Calvert 22 Foundation and

Ilker Abay is a filmmaker, actor, and director. Seven years ago, he left Istanbul
and hitchhiked to Berlin with a small suitcase.
// Ingrid Brekke
Correspondent, Afterposten, Berlin
Ingrid Brekke is a Norwegian journalist, working in the foreign news department
of Aftenposten. She was a Berlin-correspondent in 2010-12, covering Central
Europe. She has also published a book about 1989 and about what happened
afterwards in Poland, Germany and Hungary.

Irina Roldugina is a trained historian, feminist, LGBT activist and violinist. She is
trying to keep her balance and is positive that whereas television and press are
under state control, the direct speech is the best way to communicate with
society and each other. Ira is usually blogging (via facebook) about protest actions
in Moscow, feminist and LGBT events and of course she is not the only one who
does it, but this is exactly the aim - to erode official discourse, which is extremely
strong in Russia, by a numerous examples of personal experiences and opinions.

Istvan Deak currently works for one of the most innovative independent media
projects of Romania in the past few months, mariustuca.ro, where he has
explored, written and edited on topics including national and international
politics, foreign affairs, sports, vulnerable groups, media and other topics relevant
for the civil society in Ronia.
As the editor at Jurnalul National Daily (2010-2015), he was a member of the
team, which consisted of reporters, editors, photographers and designers from
around the country who realized articles that reached high visit rates in the recent
years.

Ivan Gayvanovych studied psychology and Ukrainian philology at the Mykolaiv
Pedagogical Institute as well as Public Administration at the National Academy of

online media (ForUm, Ukrainska Pravda, Eurasian Home etc.), and radio

Ivan Yakovina is a journalist and analyst focusing on international affairs.
// Jan Opielka
Freelance correspondent (n-ost, Berliner Zeitung), Gliwice
Jan Opielka is 38 and for ten years a freelance journalist working for print media in
Germany and Poland. He is mainly writing as a correspondent from Poland, the
topics are diverse, ranging from politics and society to economy and religion.
Especially he is interested in the correlation between social development and
politics, and the underlying historical or religious background.
// Jasna Zajcek
Freelance correspondent, Berlin
Jasna Zajcek has been working in the Middle East since 2004, where she met her
syrian colleague Yahya Alaous (s. below), so they reported together about
trafficked girls and women. In 2007, the Goethe Institute chose her to participate
in the project "Living Globality" where European and Arab opinion leaders
discussed and worked on the different cultural approaches of mass
communication. She has written two books and works as a freelance journalist in
Berlin, now mostly covering immigration.

Jeremy Druker is the executive director and editor in chief at Transitions (TOL), a
Prague-based NGO with a mission to strengthen the professionalism,
independence, and impact of the news media in the post-communist countries of
Europe and Eurasia. He is also the founder of Press Start, a soon-to-be-launch
crowd funding site that will assist reporters in countries where freedom of the
media is severely limited. He has been an Ashoka Fellow since 2010. Jeremy is
also an adjunct professor at New York University's Prague campus. where he
teaches a course on social media.

Kateryna Malofieieva is Ukrainian, and divides her life on "before" and "after" the
war. Before the war during 6 years she was occupied with volunteer work,
building civil society in Eastern Ukraine. At the beginning of the conflict in
Donbass she successfully started working as a producer. Almost for a year she has
been working with BBC, CBC News, Al Jazeera and other famous news channels
and media outlets. Since May 2015 she films on her own for RFE/RL.

Kateryna Serhatskova works as journalist, reporter, TV-presenter. In April 2015 by

She covered the Maidan revolution in Kyiv in 2013/14. Some of her observations
became the basis of the book “Euromaidan: History in the making”, and as soon

Tom Gebhardt is a freelance German journalist, based in Spain. He is the Spanish

the country's largest and most influential human rights organization, as well as
for liberties.eu - an independent watchdog that informs and mobilises citizens for
the protection of human rights. For both organizations, she writes and translates
articles and study cases on human rights topics. Tsveta Stoeva has a B.A. in
Psychology and an M.A. in Clinical and Counselling Psychology from Sofia
University.

Tural Ibadov has been working as journalist since 2005. He participated in
different trainings, seminars and conferences to improve his knowledge. The
media ethics, media law, reporting, extremely reporting, medial journalism, and
other related trainings are a few of them. He used to be as a trainer in NGO
projects several times, mainly in trainings related to media law. He also taught
the topics registration of Azerbaijan TV and Radio companies, work with
information sources and so on.

Ulrike Christl joined n-ost as an editor for euro|topics in November 2014. Before
she wrote for Tagesspiegel, heute.de, Deutsche Universitätszeitung and Cicero
Online. She worked as a news editor at the German press agency and in the
online editorial office of Tagesspiegel. She studied journalism and political
science in Leipzig.

Science, Eastern Europe Studies and Journalism of the University of Hamburg.
She worked as an editor for German newspapers in the Wolga region and for n-

Vitalii Atanasov is an Ukrainian journalist and media activist, and coordinator of
media education projects in Center for social and labor research (Kyiv). He
contributes to Focus, Commons, Political Critique (Ukraine), Osteuropa
magazines. He is the author of reports from former Yugoslavia, Russia, Belarus,
Crimea during the annexation and Eastern Ukraine. He authored the research
documentaries: Kherson Machine-Building Plant (2011), and Voices of Protest
(2014).

Vitaliy Leybin is media manager and reporter. From its beginning in 2007 until
now he is the chief editor at Russian Reporter magazine. He was born in Donetsk
and is a Ukrainian citizen, but live in Moscow. In the time of recent conflict he has

Vytautas Bruveris graduated university as historian, but turned to journalism and
has gained journalistic expierence in the main medias of Lithuania for 18 years
now. For the last 11 years he is the political commentator of biggest Lithuanian
daily newspaper "Lietuvos rytas" and one of the main internet news portals
lrytas.lt. Issues he deals with are Lithuanian domestic political life and policies,
international relations and topics – especially Russia and Ukraine, problems of
postsoviet "transition societies", historical memory of 20th century and political
and ideological problems related to it.
// Yahya Alaous
Freelance journalist and female rights activist, Berlin
Yahya Alaous left Damascus in Syria, where he was operating a website for
women affected by violence. He also was working as a political correspondent for
a large daily newspaper. He came to Germany in April 2015 with the help of
"Reporters without Borders". He recently started writing and reporting for
Handelsblatt's Berlin office, covering immigration.
