TRANSMISSION MEDIA
Transmission Media refers to the physical media through which communication signals are transmitted .
Alternatively, It is a physical path by which a
message travels from sender to receiver.
TRANSMISSION MEDIA
Computers and telecommunication devices use signals to represent data.
These signals are transmitted from a device to another in the form of electromagnetic energy.
• Not all portion of the spectrum are currently usable for telecommunications
• Each portion of the spectrum requires a particular transmission medium
Voice Signals are transmitted as current over metal cables.
Radio Frequencies are generally transmitted through air or space.
Visible Light which is currently being used for communication through fibre optic cable.
GUIDED MEDIA
Guided transmission media use a cabling system that guide the data signals along a specific path.
Guided Media is also known as Bound Medium as the data signal is bound by the cabling system.
TWISTED PAIR
Separately Insulated Twisted Together Often “ bundled into cables Usually installed in building during constructions Twisted-pair cables are used in telephones lines to
provide voice and data channels.
Pros and Cons
Benefits The twisting helps to reduce the interference (noise) and
crosstalk.
It is less expensive compared to other types of pairs
Drawbacks Used in short distance communication (less than 100
metres)
Speed is slower compare to other means.
COAXIAL CABLES
Highly resistant to signal interference
It offers higher bandwidth than the twisted pair cables.
Transfers data at the rate of 10 Mbps
Used in cable TV network.
OPTICAL FIBRE
Transmits signals over much longer distances than coaxial and twisted pair.
Carries information at vastly greater speed than other media.
But, Fibre optics cables is the most expensive and is very difficult to install.
UNGUIDED MEDIA
Unguided transmission media is data signals that flow through the air.
They are not guided or bound to a fixed channel to follow.
One of the common unguided media of transmission is radio frequency.
