On behalf of the Transpac Honolulu Committee leadershipand all the volunteers who staff the many committees neces-sary to the finishing of the Race to Honolulu, I welcome youtotheAlaWaiHarbor. The 2003 race marks the 42nd sailing of this historiccompetition, which started many years ago as a gentlemanlychallenge between legendary yachtsmen. Though manyyears have passed and the technology of yacht constructionhas advanced the basics remain. Skippers and their crewsarestillengagedinthesamegentlemanlychallenge. The role of the Honolulu committee also remains thesame. We take our responsibility for managing the finishof the race very seriously; our volunteers staff the DiamondHead lighthouse day and night ready to record the finishof every yacht. Once the finish is properly recorded wehave the happy task of assuring that every crew is given anenthusiastic Hawaii greeting when they reach the dock intheAlaWaiBoatHarbor.Toaccomplishthiscloseto100vol-unteers contribute their time to staff numerous committeesinpreparationforyourarrival. The success of every Transact race is dependent on coop-eration and support of three important partners. First is theCommander of District 14 United States Coast Guard. Themen and women of the Coast Guard are always ready toassist with communications and if needed emergency sup-port. But more importantly is the gracious hospitality of theAdmiral in allowing the finish line committee to occupy theDiamond Head lighthouse for the time necessary to finisheverycompetitor.Next there is the State ofHawaiiDivisionofBoat andOceanRecreation who manage Ala Wai Boat Harbor. Without theenthusiastic support the harbor staff and the Corinthiancooperation of the many boat owners displaced during thetime of your stay, the Aloha greeting you look forward towouldnotbepossible. And finally the City and County of Honolulu whosesupport and protection are essential to our success. TheDepartment of Parks and Recreation and the Honolulu PoliceDepartment play important roles in assuring that your stayinHonoluluisasafeandhappyone. We look forward to greeting each and every on of you onyourarrivalinHonolulu.Sailfastandsailsafe!Continuethetradition!

Welcome to one of the world’s greatest ocean races.Transpac’s legacy continues with the 2003 race promisinganother epic voyage across the Pacific. Once again thefleet will launch off the California coast, blast reach to thetrades, and then surf Pacific rollers for more than 1,000 milesto Diamond Head. The famous Hawaiian welcome awaits! From a racer’s point of view, it may be a big ocean race thatjust seems to happen. But terrific boats and sailing aside, what really makes Transpac successful are a few hundredpeople you’ll meet in Honolulu. They are the Transpac vol-unteersinHawaiiwhodoanunbelievablejob. Transpac ismuchmore than justa longdistance race; it’samajor event. And it’s run by volunteers. Every aspect of therace requires careful consideration, management, and hardwork. From event logistics to handicapping to budgeting, there is a huge amount to accomplish. Luckily, many veteranvolunteers keep returning, and new people keep showingup. TheTranspac familyputs in longhoursbutgreatlyenjoysrenewingfriendshipsandsharingtheAlohaspirit. ThenamesoftheleadersofTranspac2003arelistedinthisprogram under "Transpac 2003 Committee." Beyond thislist aremanymoreHawaii sailorswho staff the clubs, run theescort boats, man the information center, and help with theparties. Hawaii’s warmth is not just in the tradewinds. Thereally fun race to Hawaii actually began almost 100 yearsago. It continues strong today because so many sailorsgive their time and effort to make it a great experience foreveryone. Speed, adventure, tra-dition, romance: theTranspacific Yacht

Race has been many thingsto many people for almosta century, as it is to thosesailing in 2003. The 42ndrunning has it all, from thebattle for theBarnDoor, through someserious thrashing among smaller boatsfor their share of glory, to those whoselife ambition is just to say, "I sailedTranspac." As this was written, there are 61entries, the most since the mid-1980s.They are preparing to pursue theirgoals across 2,225 nautical miles fromLos Angeles to Hawaii and share thespotlight of a full moon finish offDiamondHead. Theycomefromeightstates and four countries, includingAustralia, China and Canada. Theyrange from the lightweight, but high-powered, 77-foot long maxi sledsPegasus and Pyewacket, to boats assmall as 31 feet, several racing double-handed, plus a time warp of nine Cal40s emerging from the mists of the1960s to celebrate their 40th anniver-sary.Completing the eclectic array of play-ers,theAlohaclassreturnsforitsfourthTranspac, accommodating vintageboats and, in some cases, competitorswithacravingforcreaturecomforts. A few of the crew lists recall ros-ters from the America's Cup or theVolvo Ocean Race, but more includedpeople like Bill Allan, an investmentadvisor from Nanaimo, B.C. who said,"I work with ordinary people who havedreams and goals that are a part ofwhatmakesuptherealworld." Allan became enamored of Transpacat age 10 while reading an uncle'ssailing magazines. "Never did I think

a time would come that I would havethe courage or the opportunity tocross the ocean in a Transpac race, tofollow in the wakes of other great menand great sailors who made the tripbeforeme,"hesaid.Allen's boat is Lawndart, a Cape BayFast40. Hetriedtosail it intheprevi-ous Transpac in 2001 but soon foundthat it wasn't a race one does on alark based only on a dream. When herealized on the second day at sea thathe hadn't really understood what hewas getting into he dropped out andreturnedtothemainland. Now he says, "I have been workinghard to ensure that the boat is perfect-lypreparedthis time, andIammindfulof the lessons learned last time. Wildhorses could not keep me away. Mycrew and I have a sense of unfinishedbusiness."Roy E. Disney raced his first Transpacin 1975. Now he holds the record of7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes and 27seconds, set in 1999. But he can stillrelate to Allan's feelings for the race."My first two races, that's all I wasthinking about - finishing," he said."Just getting that boat there was arewardinitself." Nowadays Disney's goal is the BarnDoor, a 3 1/2-by-4-foot slab of carvednative koa wood awarded to the mono-hull with the fastest elapsed time, dat-ingto1949.Hewonitin1997and'99before Philippe Kahn, sailing Pegasuswith a boatload of professional sailors, beat him to it by 63 minutes in 2001.

Pegasus didn't find enough wind tobeat Pyewacket's record, but this time,as the only entries in Division 1, adogfight of a match race looms on thehorizon. Did someone say "match race"?Pyewacket will have a few pros, too, including Dean Barker, skipper forTeam New Zealand's recent and nextAmerica's Cup campaigns, who will beoneoftheprincipaldrivers. Success would be an appropriateconclusion to Disney's final race withthe current Pyewacket, which alsoholds the Newport-to-Bermuda andChicago-Mac records, among others.A fourth Pyewacket - one of threemaxZ86s committed to Transpac 2005- will be launched later this year. Thisone has already been sold to an undis-closedoverseasbuyer. A record is within reach if the tradewinds blow at all, because both boatswill be "turbocharged" into even fasterconfigurations. Transpacific Yacht Club directorsboosted the boundary of performanceto a more generous upper limit beyondthe rating limit that had been in forcesince 1995. John Reichel and JimPugh designed both Pegasus and thecurrent Pyewacket with more speedpotential than they were allowed toexploit in 2001. Now they can dis-card internal ballast in favor of slightlyheavier ballast bulbs for greater sta-bility, which is especially importantduring the first two or three days onthe wind. When they reach the trade

winds they'll fly much larger spinnakerswith poles longer than half the boats intherace. Kahn, a Northern California andHonolulu-based software developer, said, "Transpac was smart and let bothPegasus 77 and Pyewacketbe all that they could be.The VPPs (velocity predic-tion programs) say that allconditions being equal, both boats should get toHonolulu about 12 hoursfaster than in 2001. Itmakes them very excitingboatsandagreatrace." Disney said, "We're all infavor of a limit that will letthe present boats sail closertotheirpotential." However, many moreawards are at stake forlarge and small boats alike, includingthe prestigious King Kalakaua trophy forfirst place overall on corrected handicaptime. The 2001 winner was Bull, SethRadow's Sydney 40 from Marina del Rey,but it was not the smallest boat to claim

thathonor. StuartCowan'sChutzpah, theKing Kalakaua winner in 1973 and '75,wasonly35feetLOA. The smallest boat this year is Stardust,a Black Soo 31 sailed by Greg Nelsen ofPiedmont, Calif. And as a widely accom-

plished single-handed sailor, Nelson mayget more sleep than usual because he'llhave Allen Barth's extra pair of hands onboard for this race. But with Nelsen sail-ing doublehanded, a stronger threat maybe Rod Skellet's fully crewed Young 32,

Krakatoa, fromSydney,Australia. Skellet said, "We completed this year'sSydney-Hobart in 3 days 7 hours andset the fastest time for a small boat (lessthan10meters) in the race'shistory. So Iset out looking for more challenges, and

the Transpac was a goodoption. It's a downhill raceacross a big ocean, and notmany boats from Australiahavedoneitrecently." Not to discount thepotential performance ofdoublehanded competi-tors, there are a half-dozenintrepid two-man crews.OnewillsailNeilBarth'sfirstedition Volvo 60, America'sChallenge, from NewportBeach, Calif. The boat waslast raced on the first leg ofthe1997-98Whitbread (now

As a master wood worker Mr. Bowman is consid-ered one of the foremost authorities on Koa. Every race year for the last decade I have had theunique opportunity to visit Mr. Bowman at his homeinNuuanuwherehisshopislocated. Often covered with wood shavings and sawdust,he is always smiling and eager to show you his latestproject. His scale model canoes are the result of his con-siderable skill, time, and his love of the canoe and allthat it represents. If you have a chance at the trophybanquet, I encourage you to take a close look at thisremarkable model of the Hokulea. In1963aboat thatwas thought toberevolutionary and that would neverlast was first popped out of the mold. Now, 40 years later, the Cal 40 is stillpopularasacruiserandracer. Once considered an ultralight at18,000 pounds, the Cal 40 "owned"Transpac the first three years sheraced. The boat was first, secondand sixth overall in 1965, first, fourthandfifthoverall in1967,andfirstandthirdoverallin1969. Eveninthe1970s,theCal40domi-nated class C. It wasn't until Merlincame along in 1977 and sailors real-ized that boats could be built evenlighter and longer than the Cal 40that the class slowly regressed intothe background of Transpac history, although making occasional appear-ancesinthe80sand90s. At the end of the 2001 race, whenWillow Wind won the Aloha class, slaying such giants as Shanakee IIand Bonaire, we (the boat andcrew) got a lot of attention. Peopleloved seeing the mighty old Cal 40once again towering over her class.Everyone assumed I would bringher to Hawaii again, but the rigorsof the race and delivery home areenormous. My boyfriend-navigator,Duncan Harrison, and I kept tellingpeople we would retire the boat fromtheraceonawinningyear. However, while inHawaii I fell intoa rum-induced conversation with

Stan Honey, the navigator for severalTranspac winners, most recently RoyE. Disney's Pyewacket, and also theownerof theCal40Illusion. He toldme that 2003 would mark the 40thanniversary of the Cal 40. Stan qui-etly said, "Wouldn't it be great to see10Cal40sonthestartingline?" That's all it took. Shortly after wereturned to Long Beach I began con-tacting every Cal 40 owner I couldreach, including the Cal 40 fleet inthe Pacific Northwest. Believing inpositive affirmation (like "Field ofDreams" - if you build it they willcome), I felt inmyheart that if I saidthere would be a Cal 40 fleet in the2003 Transpac, it would materialize.Boat owners and sailors would com-mitiftheyknewaboutit. As word got out, I even heard thatDennis Conner was looking to charteraCal40.SpeakingtoDennis,Ilearnedhe had purchased Persephone, hull#1. Dennis said he bought it to dosome Mexico races, but I still puthim on the list of possible boats forTranspac. By September, 2002, I had 10 pos-sibleCal40 entries. Stan and Ihad alengthy phone conversation shortlyafter I released this information tothe Transpacific Yacht Club board ofdirectors. Stan had an importantdecision to make: does he race hisown boat and be part of Cal 40 his-toryordoeshestaywithPyewacket?

He made the choice to race Illusionand was the first Cal 40 to enter the2003 Transpac. Stan's commitmentwas a huge factor in the develop-ment of this fleet. I entered WillowWind shortly afterward, knowing thatthe bulk of the entries would notcome in until the March 7 deadlinefor the discounted entry fee. JerryFinnegan entered his boat, Celebrity, and was instrumental in a "revivalmeeting" held at Alamitos Bay YachtClubinearlyFebruary. That gathering of Cal 40 owners,Transpac board members and othersailors included George Griffith, whofirst conceptualized the Cal 40, SkipAllan, who won Transpac overall onhisCal40 in1967, and evena cameoappearance by Jon Andron, who wasone of the "whiz kids" aboard thewinningCal40in1969. The meeting was the final impetusto encourage Cal 40 owners to enterthe 2003 Transpac and be part of thelargest Cal 40 fleet in decades. Theowners of Redhead, Ralphie, John Band Flying Cloud all told me after-ward that theywere in.CaliforniaGirland Ranger completed the group ofearlyentries. Yes, Stan, it will be great to see 10Cal 40s on the starting line of thisyear'sTranspac.(Editor’s Note: Wendy Siegal sailedherCal40WillowWind in theAlohaClass of the 1999 Transpac, then

Transpac2003

The Transpacific Yacht Race is one oftwo of the most enduring long dis-tance sailing events in theworld. Its

nearest rival is the much shorter BermudaRace which was first sailed in the Atlanticin the same year Transpac began. Ofcourse, had Transpac been sailed in theyear it was originally proposed, it wouldnowbeanamazing117yearsold. Backin1886,oneofHawaii’slastmon-archs, King David Kalakaua, extended aninvitation to the members of the PacificYacht Club of San Francisco to take partinaCalifornia-to-Hawaii sailingrace. Thefinish was to coincide with his 50th birth-day celebration the following year andhe offered a trophy worth $1,000 to thewinner. Why the Pacific Yacht Club didn’t takethe King up on his royal offer was appar-ently never recorded. Nevertheless, in1906, Honolulu businessman ClarenceMacfarlane, took it upon himself to sailhis 48-foot schooner La Paloma fromHawaii to San Francisco hoping to enticea few yacht owners into a race back tothe Islands. But, on passing through theGolden Gate, he was shocked to discoverthe city had been recently devastatedby the now-infamous great earthquakeandfire. Macfarlane doggedly sailed south toLos Angeles, where he met with twoother yachtsmen, Charles Tutt, owner of

the 112-foot yawl Anemone and HarrySinclair, owner of the 86-foot schoonerLurline. As Sinclair and Macfarlane hadalready discussed the merits of a race toHonolulu, it wasn’t long before the threemen agreed on a simple handicap systemfor their dissimilar vessels, and at noon,on June 11, 1906, the 2,225-mile racebegan. Sinclair’s Lurline crossed the finish line12 days, 9 hours and 59 minutes later, tobecome Transpac’s first elapsed-time andcorrected-time winner - a passage so fastit was only eclipsed once in the next fourdecades. Transpac has been raced bienniallywith few exceptions since 1906 and after41 contests, has created its own specialhistory. The followingare just a fewof itshighlights:

• The race was run every even-num-bered year from 1906 through1936,exceptfor 10 years during WorldWarI,then changed toodd-numberedyearsin1939, so astonotconflictwiththeBermuda RaceintheAtlantic.

• Transpac was not raced during theWorld War II years of 1942 through1946.

• The race has started in Los Angeles

every year except 1928 (NewportBeach),1923 and ‘32 (Santa Barbara),1936(Santa Monica), and1939(SanFrancisco).

• The largest fleet to race in Transpachad 80boatsin1979.

• Thesmallestfleethadtwoyachtsin 1932,duringtheGreatDepression.

• The largest yacht to race in Transpacwas the 161-foot schooner Goodwillin1953and1959 (with abest timeof101/2 days).

• The smallest boat to race was the 25-foot sloopVaporin1999.

• The current elapsed-time record isheld by Roy E. Disney’s73-footmaxiultra- l i g h tPyewacketof7days,11hours,41 minutesand27seconds,setin1999.

• The most wins on elapsed-time isthree, by two different yachts, Lurline(1906, ‘08, ‘12) and MorningStar(1949,‘51, ‘55).

• The only foreign boat to win onelapsed- time was the 73-foot ketchStormvogel, from SouthAfrica,in1967.

Some sixty boats are entered inthis year’s biennial TranspacificYacht Race, but none can have

a more compelling story than the35-foot sloop entered in the double-handed division with the appropriatenameofTwoGuysontheEdge. Two Guys is owned by Dan Doyle,a Honolulu businessman and pastcommodoreoftheWaikikiYachtClub. His lone crew member, Bruce Burgess, also lives and works on Oahu andboth men are very experienced insailing the tradewinds toHawaii. Butthere’s a good deal more to the storythanthat. To begin with, it should be under-stood that the boat’s name isn’t just aname, it’s a descriptive phrase. Whena couple of sailors decide to brave2,225 miles of open ocean in a highperformance 35-foot boat, they areindeedTwoGuysontheEdge. Being on the edge is a near-con-stant requisite when you’re trying tokeep a boat on course and the sailstrimmed while blasting down oceanswells in 20-knot trade winds for dayson end and there’s no one else to turntobuttheotherguy.

This year marks thefourthTranspac start forTwo Guys. Doyle andanother guy, PatrickRogers, began the racein 1997, only to haveto drop out soon afterthe start because of abrokenrudder.Then,in1999, Doyle entered theboat and subsequentlyfound he couldn’t breakfree from business obligations. TwoGuys raced anyway, but without itsowner. As luckwouldhave it, the twoguysaboard in ‘99 - Burgess and anotherwellknown Honolulu sailor, LesVasconcellos had perfect conditionsand beat their competition to theDiamond Head finish by a remarkablefive days. So in 2001, Doyle returnedto race Transpac vowing that nothingwould ever stop him from doing itthistime. Perhaps for good luck,Doyledecid-ed to slightly alter the meaning of hisboat’s descriptive name by addinganother, albeit honorary, member to

his team. Twelve-year-oldNatalieFrazierfromMililania leukemiasur-vivor was listed as anhonorary crew mem-ber with the hope thatit would raise bothawareness and fundsfor the Leukemia &LymphomaSociety. To keep their addi-tional crew memberon board, so to speak,Two Guys stayed intouch with Natalie byHam radio and satel-lite phone during thecourseoftherace. And

when the boat finished in first placein the doublehanded class, Nataliebecame one of the most interviewed“crewmembers”onTranspacRow. With thisyear’s entry intoTranspac,Doyle will again be attempting toraise awareness and funds for theLeukemia & Lymphoma Society, butwith an additional honorary crewmember: sailing's most recognizedcommentator,GaryJobson. In case some readers have beenwithout media contact, Jobson hasbeen recently diagnosed with lym-phoma.Theironyofthisisthathehasbeen the chairman of the Leukemia &Lymphoma Society’s Volvo LeukemiaCup Regattas a series of 45 fundrais-ingyachtingeventssince1993. According to sailing journalist RichRoberts, Jobson will be receiving che-motherapy for the next six to eightmonths to battle back from this dis-ease. “By sailing on Jobson’s behalf, itis our hope to raise at least $10,000between Bruce (Burgess) and I,” Doylesaid, “and then look to otherTranspacparticipants and the sailing commu-nityatlargeforadditionaldonations. And because there has been noTranspac trophy for the DoublehandedClass, we also hope to establish onethis year and have it dedicated as theLeukemia & Lymphoma Society GaryJobsonPerpetualTrophy.” TheLeukemia&LymphomaSociety
