as one of the busiest stations within sydney and with aims to meet the planned 2018 rail schedule, transport for new south Wales (tfnsW) is upgrading Wynyard station. the Wynyard station Upgrade (WsU) is a key infrastructure project being delivered by the nsW Government for sydney’s financial district. the upgrade includes new fixtures and finishes, widening of the concourse, additional amenities, ticket barriers and upgrade of services. Due to the significant location of Wynyard station, with numerous key project interfaces (Wynyard Walk project, the upcoming CBD south east light rail project and the one Carrington street Development), and significant public interface, novo rail alliance, a partnership between laing o rourke, aurecon, tfnsW and rCr o’Donnell Griffin, was awarded the WsU works.

nova systems is providing novo rail alliance with safety assurance support by engaging stakeholders in hazard identification workshops, working closely with project personnel in managing project specific safety risks and delivering the supporting safety assurance documents as per the delivery schedule.

Highlights BHp Billiton iron ore is conducting a trial of autonomous haul trucks at its Jimblebar mine under the autonomous Haul production trial (aHpt) project.

BHp Billiton iron ore engaged nova systems to review the execution of the trial and provide advice relating to the test and evaluation (t&e) process and operational risk management to minimise risks in capability assurance and delivery. two senior systems engineers were mobilised at short notice to conduct the review over a two-week period in the perth office and at the mine site. interviews with project staff and review of documentation and processes allowed a considered analysis of the project state, identifying its strengths and areas for improvement. nova delivered a detailed report two weeks later, discussing the team’s observations and conclusions and providing 20 detailed recommendations for project improvement.

With constantly growing populations the global transport market is under increasing pressure to reduce congestion and improve the safety and efficiency of the transportation of passengers and cargo across land, through the air and over water.

Governments, investors, transport manufacturers, operators and maintainers are constantly searching for innovative ways to improve the cost efficiencies of supporting, improving and expanding sustainable transport infrastructure.

The need to reduce costs, improve safety, ease of use and efficiency of transportation systems drives the demand for improved automation, communication and interoperability between vehicles and infrastructure, which in turn, leads to the introduction of innovative and disruptive technologies into, what already are, complex operating environments.

By drawing upon its extensive experience of supporting Australia’s most technically advanced and challenging acquisition and development programs, Nova Systems is ideally placed to provide innovative solutions for the complex challenges the transport sector faces as it advances towards Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) that interface with increasingly complex and autonomous modes of transportation.

the transport access program (tap) is an initiative of transport for nsW (tfnsW) to deliver accessible, modern, secure and integrated infrastructure at stations and interchanges throughout new south Wales. tap consists of many projects spanning a period of several years. approximately 50 tap projects are commenced each year.

the tap is currently the second-larg-est program within tfnsW in terms of total expenditure, second only to the sydney Metro program. the total spend on tap by 2018 is expected to be almost $3 billion.

For the last 3 years, nova systems has supplied engineering safety and systems assurance services to the tap. this includes assisting tfnsW technical Managers and project Managers to ensure that tap contractors meet safety and assurance obligations and reviewing all contractor submissions before presentation to the tfnsW Configuration Control Board (CCB).

Highlights UGl enhanced their standard locomotive by offering a removable second Driver station (rsDs) in the driver cabin.

the existing locomotive was either fitted with a fixed second driver station or with a dummy structure with no functionality, that is an obstruction in the cabin. the rsDs provided operators of the standard locomotive the ability to reconfigure the locomotive from mainline operation to intermodal operation and back by installing or removing the rsDs.

UGl engaged nova systems to provide the design of the rsDs, the installation methodology and all associated systems engineering tasks, such as integration, requirements management and logistics.

nova assessed the operation requirements from UGl, the operators and the drivers, some of which had conflicts to be addressed, such as weight and the ability to install/remove through the cabin door.

Highlightsin January 2003, a railCorp osCar suburban train driver suffered a heart attack and lost control of a train. the train derailed and overturned, resulting in seven fatalities, numerous injuries, and survivors who were trapped inside the train for a considerable time. a special Commission of inquiry recommended that all railCorp trains be fitted with an internal emergency Door release (ieDr) that could be operated by passengers in an emergency.

nova systems was engaged by railCorp to design the installation of the ieDr onto the osCar train. the nova systems tasks focussed on the installation design, design supervision of the prototype installation and design completion for full fleet installation. one key challenge was the parallel activities of the design of the ieDr occurring simultaneously with the design of the installation by nova systems. this presented issues of changing data and changing requirements that needed careful management and focus on an installation design that was adaptable to change.

in 2016 the rail industry safety and standards Board (rissB) drafted an electromagnetic Compatibility (eMC) Management standard to be adopted by the australian rail industry to ensure that systems introduced on the rail network were electromagnetically compatible with the rail environment.

nova systems was engaged to perform a review of the rissB draft eMC Management standard and provide a validation report with recommendations and evaluation of the proposed draft.

nova systems was able to provide resources with the expertise and knowledge of best practice in eMC management of rail systems. the vast majority of recommendations submitted to rissB were adopted by the rissB Development Group and the validation report was endorsed and accepted by the rissB project Manager.

nova systems eMC capability was able deliver the review in a timely manner that was able to recommend enhancements that were in line with world best practice and provided a more holistic overview that covered aspects that were omissions in the original draft.

Highlights the transport access program (tap), a transport for new south Wales (tfnsW) initiative to improve customer experience, formed the Car park Conversion project (CpCp) to convert existing sydney trains and nsW trains staff parking spaces into commuter parking spaces at numerous sites located throughout the sydney trains and nsW trains network. the conversion of staff car parking spaces to additional commuter parking spaces is aimed at encouraging commuters to choose public transport.

Downer eDi Works (Downer) was awarded the CpCp works contract for 16 various sites located around the sydney region. the CpCp works included, but was not limited to; CCtv, lighting, power supply, drainage and civil works, such as line marking and refurbishment or replacement of pavements, footpaths, wheel stops, speed humps and crossings. the works undertaken have provided extra parking capacity around the network.

Downer engaged nova systems to support the CpCp safety assurance requirements for project completion and handover.
