Karnataka has a well-developed transport system.
There are four major modes of transport :
1 Air transport 2 Rail transport 3 Water transport 4 Road transport

Karnataka’s capital city, Bangalore is well-connected by air to domestic and international destinations and the Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) in the city is one of the busiest airports in India.
It is also the headquarters of the airlines, Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines.

Mangalore and Bangalore are the only two cities in the state that have International flights operating from their airports.
The international flights from Mangalore International Airport are only to countries located in the Middle East,
While Bangalore has good international connectivity with flights from different nations landing here.

The airport at Bangalore is termed as Bengaluru International Airport and Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines are some of the important airlines that operate out of this airport

Rail transport
•The total length of rail track in Karnataka is 3089 km.
The South Western Zone is headquartered at Hubli .
Coastal Karnataka is covered under the Konkan railway network

The superfast Shatabdi Express trains run from Bangalore to Chennai and Mysore.
A Jan Shatabdi express runs from Bangalore to Hubli and this is the first train in India that has been fitted with a GPS (Global Position System) based Location Announcement System.
Konkan Railway is an engineering marvel; the construction of which included the bridge across the river Sharavathi at Honnavar of length 2023 mts and a tunnel at Karwar of length 2960 mts.

The sector of Inland water transport within the rivers of Karnataka is not well-developed.

Among the network of roads in Karnataka, 3973 km. of roads are National Highways.
Karnataka also has State highways of length 9829 km.

The public bus transport in Karnataka is managed by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC)
It operates 6360 schedules using 7100 vehicles covering 1.95 million kilometres and an average of 2.2 million passengers daily.
About 25000 people are employed in KSRTC

For better management of public transport, KSRTC was bifurcated into three Corporations viz.,
(BMTC) Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation Bangalore on 15th Aug 1997,
(NWKRTC) North-west Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, Hubli on 1st Nov 1997
(NEKRTC ) North-East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, Gulbarga on 1st Oct 2000

•Infrastructure of KSRTC includes a Corporate Office, 13 Divisional Offices,65 Depots, two Bus Bodybuilding Workshops ,one Printing Press, 119 Bus Stands and 3 Training Institutes.
•Traffic revenue in 2008-09 - Rs. 1429.53 Crores
•Gross Revenue in 2008-09 - Rs. 1635.85 Crores
•Profit in 2008-09 - Rs.57.71 Crores

BMTC
BMTC leads by example in being the only Bus Corporation within the city of Bangalore to ferry more than 4 million commuters. The organization comprises a fleet of over 5593 buses covering an area encompassed with a radius of 36 kilometers from the city centre.

Volvo based Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) Services, also known as Vayu Vajra, offer high-end air-conditioned comfort to passengers in an effort to wean them away from personalized modes of travel.
The service is available round the clock, providing seamless connectivity between important areas of the city and BIAL

The service is operated by deploying Volvo based buses that are Air-conditioned, Euro-III conforming with kneeling mechanism, collapsible exit floor and room for wheel-chair.

services deploy (Suvarna class of) buses branded in green and bottle green on 12 major corridors coming in from surrounding sub-urbs in the city - Hosur road, Bannerghatta road, Sarjpura road, Kanakapura road, Mysore road etc.
These buses are run on a direction based concept where the commuter takes the next (high frequency, every 15 minutes) bus in his/her direction of travel, and if need be, makes a change over to another bus to reach the destination.
The service terminates on different points on the radius of the city core, to avoid congesting the city centre.

Suvarna services are newly introduced services with a fleet comprising air-suspension and high comfort (without A/C) buses.
They are 295 services in operation as on 31st July 2009, which are specially deployed during peak hours.

Pushpak services are operated by deploying branded buses having added comfort features such as better upholstered seats with head rest, more leg space etc. Their fares are structured higher than the ordinary fares.
These services are especially popular for Chartered Service, Casual Contract etc
