Gardening is Good for the Soul & Environment
They say that garden-ing is good for the soul. Why, then, fl y
to Hawaii or drive up the coast to get away from it all when all you have to do is step outside to your garden for a little rest and relax-ation?
Spending a few hours in the yard planting fl owers and growing vegetables – even mowing the lawn – is a great way to forget about your troubles and escape from the pressures of ev-eryday life. It can also save you a few bucks from your grocery bill. You can’t beat it!
And besides, by staying home and spending less time in your car, the fewer carbon emissions you will be releasing into the atmosphere. Transpor-tation is a major contributor to global warming.
Gardening, on the other hand, is good for the environ-ment. You know all those grass clippings, tree braches and leaves that you place in your tan yard waste container? Well, they go to good use. For the past 15 years, our trucks have transported them to California Wood Recycling, which uses cutting-edge technology to convert the green waste ma-terials into organic mulches, compost, wood chips and other products that naturally fertilize plants and trees.
Time and effort has fi nally paid off, and bagged

24th California Coastal Cleanup Day is Sept. 20
Carpinteria residents: Here’s your chance to be part of the solution to marine pollution! Join the tens of thousand of participants statewide who
will be clearing debris from our beaches, shorelines and inland waterways on Saturday, Sept. 20, during the 24th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day.
On this day, 50,000 volunteers will turn out to over 700 cleanup sites statewide to conduct what has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as “the largest garbage collection.” Since the program started in 1985, nearly 700,000 Californians have removed more than 10 million pounds of debris from our state’s shorelines and coasts.
Coming at the end of the summer beach season and right near the start of the school year, Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, ser-vice groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent harmful impacts and have fun!
Coastal Cleanup Day runs from 9 a.m. to noon. There are close to 20 cleanup sites in Santa Barbara County, including Jelly Bowl in Carpinteria, Santa Claus Lane and Lookout Park in Summerland. For all local participating beaches and waterways, call 1-800-COAST-4U, or visit www.coastal.ca.gov.

11th Carpinteria Triathlon to Test Skill and Endurance
Close to 1,000 superbly conditioned men and women from across Southern California and
throughout the state will gather on Carpinteria State Beach on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 28, for the 11th annual Carpinteria Triath-lon.
E.J. Harrison and Sons supports this special event and encourages all to come out and cheer for these dedicated athletes of all ages as their endurance skills in swimming, bicycling and running are put to the test. The event begins at 7:30 a.m.
The Carpinteria Triathlon benefi ts the City of Carpinteria’s Parks and Recreation youth programs. Proceeds will help to provide scholarships and addi-tional equipment for programs such as After School at the Pool, Aqua Camp and Junior Lifeguards.
Contestants can choose between two courses from which to compete: The Olympic Course incorporates a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run; the Sprint Course is comprised of a .5K swim, 15K bike ride and 5K run.
The Carpinteria Beach, known as the “World’s Saf-est Beach” is very special, and has been rated the No.
1 swimming beach, due to its Southern ex-posure and its protection by the Chan-
nel islands. Swimmers usually enjoy small surf and the absence of riptides at this unique beach.
The bike course travels along the foothills, offering some spec-
tacular ocean views. Both the Olym-pic and Sprint courses offer the competi-
tor a challenging ride, although the Sprint course is also well suited for novice triathletes. The course runs through Carpinteria neighborhoods and is mostly a fl at loop course.
Entry fees are $75 for the Sprint course, $95 for the Olympic course and $155 for relay teams (Olym-pic course only). Entry fees for competitors 16 and under are $45, $55 and $95, respectively. Fees for all race categories are an additional $15 after Sept. 12.
Entries are limited and may sell out. Registration information is available at www.carpinteriatriathlon.com. You also can receive entry forms online atwww.active.com.
Volunteers also are needed. For more information, call Ann Meyer at 684-5405, ext. 432, or email her at [email protected].

E.J. Harrison & SonsRecycling, Yard Waste and Trash Guidelines
What goes in the Trash?
What Doesn’t go in the Trash or any other cart?
Hopefully, very little. After you have recycled, composted, fi lled the yard waste cart, donated old clothing and goods, and done all of those good things and more – most of the rest can go in the trash.
How to Place Your Cart for Automated CollectionThe automated arm of the collection truck needs room to grab the cart. Carts should be placed 2-3 feet apart from each other and from objects such as mailboxes and cars with the wheels facing the curb. Carts should be out by 7:00 a.m. on collection days.
