Trauma & Orthopaedic ServicesThe Orthopaedic Department provides a comprehensive range of orthopaedic services from Russells HallHospital based in Dudley and Corbett Outpatient Centre in Stourbridge.
This is provided by a dedicated team of twelve consultants each having an area of specialism and expertise.
Our waiting times, from referral to first appointment, are now among the best in the West Midlands withthe department offering the following services:
Foot & ankle surgeryThis includes a full range of forefoot, mid and hind foot surgery including diabetic foot surgery andarthroscopic surgery.
Hand surgeryA comprehensive hand service is offered. The carpal tunnel service includes an in-house Mediracer nerveconduction service with developments underway to allow direct access by GP and extended scopephysiotherapists in the community.
Hip and knee joint replacement surgeryThis is carried out in modern laminar flow theatres adjacent to the elective ward. The Dudley Group is one ofthe few NHS Trusts offering computer navigation where appropriate, to assist the surgeon performing hipand knee joint replacements. Whilst this is not essential in all patients, it can help in certain cases.

Paediatric orthopaedic surgeryHip dysplasia clinics and treatment of deformities in children with cerebral palsy. A number of clinics aresupported by an Extended Scope Practitioner working in close liaison with the consultants.
Shoulder & upper limb surgeryAdvanced shoulder and upper limb surgery including shoulder and elbow joint replacement, arthroscopicrotator cuff repair, instability surgery and arthroscopic elbow surgery.
There is a pathway accessible to extended scope practitioners to direct list for frozen shouldermanipulation.
Spinal surgeryThere are dedicated back pain clinics withsurgery for degenerative back conditionsincluding microdiscetomy and decompressions.There is a well established fast track caudalepidural service for extended scopepractitioners.
Sports injuriesFacilities for detailed assessment and advancedhip, knee, shoulder and ankle reconstructivesurgery including surgery for instability andosteochondral injuries.
The enhanced recovery programmecommenced over a year ago, focusing onimproving patient outcomes, speeding uprecovery and decreasing length of stay aftersurgery. We provide Consultant Nurse ledclasses that educate patients about to undergohip & knee replacement surgery.

All elective patients areadmitted to a ‘Ring Fenced’elective orthopaedic ward.
The elective service is supportedby a 24/7 acute trauma servicewhich deals with the full range offracture work accommodatingany acute and urgentorthopaedic conditions. TheDudley Group is part of theBirmingham & Black CountryTrauma Network and is adesignated Trauma Unit.
There are daily consultant ledand delivered trauma operatinglists in a dedicated traumatheatre and Monday to Fridayfracture clinics in support ofemergency departmentpatients.
We currently achieve significantly better results than the national neck of femur targets. In August 2012, ouraverage time for patients to have their operation was 23 hours compared to the national target of 36 hoursand our average time for Orthogeriatric assessment was 29 hours compared to the national target of 72hours. We are one of the top 5 hospitals nationally for neck of femur surgery aftercare.
