The focus will be conceptualizing and integrating the three stages of trauma-informed therapy work with sandtray. This includes the use and importance of the “trauma narrative”, “life narrative”, and “family narrative” in successful treatment. The value of the family narrative and family script regarding the traumatic event will be discussed. We will also explore the inclusion of spirituality/religion as a possible resource for trauma victims and their families. Case studies and examples will be given. Linda E. Homeyer, Ph.D., LPC-S, and RPT-S, is a Professor in the Professional Counseling Program in the Department of Counseling at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas (north of Austin). She served as their chair, 2010-2014. Dr. Homeyer also teaches internationally, including India, Malaysia, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Taiwan, and even on a cruise ship! She is a frequent conference presenter & speaker throughout the United States as well. She was named an Honorary Professor of International Studies by Texas State University, 2014-2017. It was her work as an investigator of child abuse that led to her interest in counseling children. An advocate for children and play therapy, she served several years on the Texas Association for Play Therapy Board of Directors and served two terms as President of the Association for Play Therapy Board of Directors. Dr. Homeyer is the 2013 recipient of APT’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Homeyer co-authored Sandtray: A Practical Manual; The Handbook of Group Play Therapy; Play Therapy Interventions with Children's Problems; and The World of Play Therapy Literature, as well as many book chapters and journal articles. Her work has been translated into Chinese, Russian, Korean, and Spanish. Her current areas of interest include exploring spirituality in play therapy.    

Continuing Education Continuing education credit for this event is co-sponsored by the NY Association for Play Therapy and The Institute for Continuing Education. The program offers 12.00 contact hours (6.00 contact hours per day). The Supervision Session, scheduled April 1, offers 2 contact hours of APT supervision credit. CE credit is awarded on a daily basis with full daily. There is no additional CE processing fee. CE application forms and other materials will be available on-site. CE verification is to be mailed to CE applicants following the conference. Play Therapy: The Institute for Continuing Education is approved by The Association for Play Therapy to sponsor continuing education specific to play therapy. The Institute maintains responsibility for the program. APT Provider 98-040.

Psychology: The Institute for Continuing Education is an organization approved by the American Psychological Association, (APA), to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Institute for Continuing Education maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Counseling: The Institute for Continuing Education will submit a co-sponsorship application to NBCC for this event.

Social Work: The Institute for Continuing Education is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards, (ASWB), though the Approved Continuing Education, (ACE), program. The Institute for Continuing Education maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Provider No. 1007. Licensed social workers should contact their individual state jurisdiction to review current continuing education requirements for license renewal.

New York SED: The Institute is an approved CE provider by the NY Board Social Work, Provider No. 0025.

Marriage-Family Therapy: The Institute for Continuing Education is an approved provider of continuing education by the Ohio Board MFT, Provider No. RTX 100501.

Instructional Methodology: May include Lecture, demonstration, audio/visual, experiential practice of techniques, large and small group discussion.

Day One: The play therapist attendees will be able to:

• Identify how using sand, sandtray, and the miniature figures can assist client’s in self-regulation

• List trauma-related miniature figures, both symbols of fear and symbols of safety

• Explore mental health discipline ethical code which mandates cultural proficiency in client’s Spiritual/Religious dynamics

• Explain how to assess and use spiritual/religious issues as a resiliency factor in trauma treatment

• Identify two ways in which spiritual/religious dynamics may be shown in the sandtray

• Explore trauma, impact of adverse childhood events studies, and define trauma-informed practice  

Day Two: The play therapist attendees will be able to:

• Identify at least three related processes by which the brain interacts/responds to the client’s use of sandtray therapy

• List at least three trauma-informed dynamics supporting the use of sandtray

• List the three steps of trauma work • Identify how to use a trauma narrative and life narrative • Implement a family play therapy session using a

sandtray • Identify at least 2 therapeutic purposes for a family

session
