FLORENCE - A VERY IMPORTANT CITY! PAGE4

So many tourists in such a good-looking city! Naked like Michelangelo’s David or rugged up in the latest winter fashion by their own world-class designers, Florentines and their city never fail to impress. Already in need of oxygen after admiring their art, visitors are mesmerized by this city, effortlessly strutting, flirting and evidently enjoying life. The jewel, Italy remains essentially what it is – a busy business centre. The Florentines recognize that their town is on wane, and increasingly ignored by the Europeans. But Florentines never forget their proud heritage. The first glimpse of Florence is seen by only the fortunate. The road from rival Siena leads you to the heights backing the south bank of the Arno River. Through the trees, the glories of Florence fit into view the bell tower, the dome created by Brunelleschi and the Basilica. Only the hardest of hearts can remain uninfluenced. Florence is a financial powerhouse but it is not such a romantic place. Its great families have built fine mansions and lavished money on churches, public buildings and the arts, but not out of love of beauty. To display greatness is to be great. The majesty Duomo is an advertisement as the much power and wealth of Florence's leading families as of the city's artistic prowess. The families might leave and go, but their advertisement shall live on!

Florentines are born into a world of extraordinary timeless beauty, so its hardly surprising that they cultivate their appearance, and do it without effort. The meaning of Florence is: style, both past and present. Their stylish boutiques line up alongside of palazzi. Palazzi is a palatial building that you should pay a visit to, the lovely stylish boutiques shall catch your eyes and want you to buy their clothing and accessories. This is one of the places many tourists pay a visit for shopping. When the shops are closed its time to EAT!!!! Sit down for a simple Tuscan meal of tomato stew followed by prime steak in a family-run trattoria or splash out on one of the city's classic gourmet restaurants or stylish designers eateries. Do not forget the Florence speciality Chiantis, Tuscany wine. You can easily explore Tuscany using Florence as a base: enjoy the splendors of Siena, Pisa, Lucca and San Gimignano, and wander the undulating Chianti countryside. This awesome city will take your breaths away and you will not get bored! The lovely people will welcome you like family and make you feel at home. You will buy a lot of lovely things in the wonderful shops and have a lot of tasty food as well.

FOOD ! PAGE7

Italian people were very fond of meat. Most foods, especially meat or fish are eaten immediately after slaughter due to the lack of refrigeration or they would preserve food with salt. Also, due to wars and conflicts between local lords, most people don’t try or know about food, or spices grown outside their region unless they lived near a seaport. Chicken with fennel, Stuffed sardines, Roasted swan, Haggis Meat or fish pies are eaten very often. Meat balls and spaghetti, and pasta are also very special in

Italy. Some of their special dishes are:

- Pasta with porcini - Spaghetti meat ball - Pasta with spicy sausage

and cream- Stews The wealthy people in Italy

like to decorate their food in certain ways. They like to show their significance of being w e a l t hy a n d l i k e p e o p l e knowing, and a way to do this was also through the food they ate and cooked. The y would put gold gild over their food to make

it look beautiful, pearls to make it look colorful and many other different kinda of beads. This sure doesn't help the food taste good but it helps the wealthy people to conceal the semi-rotten food they are actually eating, so others don’t find out that they have no way of preserving the food.

The tasty food in Italy will stay on your tongue and you wont be able to have enough of it, so hold your hearts and have lovely meals in Italy.

Italian Language:

Italian is the official language of

Italy, and 93% of population are

native Italian speakers. Around 50% of population speak a regional

dialect as mother tongue. Many dialects are mutually cant be

understandable and thus considered

by linguists as separate languages, but are not officially recognized.

Friulian, one of these dialects, is spoken by 600,000 people in the

north east of Italy, which is 1% of

the entire population. Other northern minority languages

include Ladin, Slovene, German, which enjoys equal recognition with

Italian in the provinces and French,

which is legally recognized in the Alpine regions.

Italian Family Values:

- The family is always the

centre of the social Structure- Family provides very good

influences for the members in it- In the north, only nuclear

families live toghether

- In the south, the extended family often live together in one

house- The family is always the

source of emotional and financial

support for all the members. - Family is always together and

should never be in misunderstood fights

Italian Style:

- Appearance is important in Italy

- The way you dress indicates

your status, family background,

education level- First impressions are last

impressions - ‘Bella figura’ is a important

concept

- Ju d g e p e o p l e o n t h e i r appearance, and are extremely

fashion conscious - Italian people judge you on

your confidence level

Meeting Etiquette: . Greetings are enthusiastic yet

rather formal.

. The usual handshake with direct eye contact and a smile

suffices between strangers.

. Once a relationship develops, air-kissing on both cheeks.

-Wait until invited to move to a first name basis.

. Italians are guided by first

impressions, so it is important that you demonstrate propriety and

respect when greeting people, especially when meeting them for

the first time.

. Many Italians use calling cards in social situations. These are

slightly larger than traditional business cards and include the

person's name, address, title or

academic honors, and their

telephone number.. If you are staying in Italy for

an extended period of time, it is a

good idea to have calling cards made. Never give your business

card in a meeting situation.

Dining Etiquette: If invited to an Italian house:

. If an invitation says the dress

is informal, wear stylish clothes that are still rather formal, i.e., jacket

and tie for men and an elegant dress for women.

. Punctuality is not a must. You

may arrive between 15 minutes late if invited to dinner and up to 30

minutes late if invited to a party.. If you are invited to a meal,

bring gift-wrapped such as wine or

chocolates.. If you are invited for dinner

and want to send flowers, have them delivered that day.

CLOTHING! PAGE10

The clothing the Italians wear speak much about the status of the person, either their rich or poor or just middle classed. Clothing was a symbol of “social standing”. By looking at the clothes in Italy, one could easily know between high class or middle class and the lower c l a s s e s . W e a r i n g clothes is extremely important.

T h e r i c h w e a r fabrics such as velvet, satin and cotton, while the poor wear flannel and other types of cheap fabrics. Cotton is known as a rich person’s clothing. In these days, cotton is not easily available and it is imported from India and America. Since clothing would

keep possession of v a l u e a n d h a d important societal significance, people use them if hard times came. Even the kings and the queens used their clothing too.

In 1667, Newton returned to Cambridge, where he became a fellow of Trinity College. Two years later he w a s a p p o i n t e d s e c o n d L u c a s i a n P r o f e s s o r o f Mathematics. It was Newton's reflecting telescope, made in 1668, that finally brought him to the attention of the scientific community and in 1672 he is now made a Fellow of the Royal Society.
