Peregrine Group Travel

Bronny escorted a Peregrine Travel Centre group to India, a highlight was a cooking class at Shahpura, home of the Maharaja of Jodphur. The group stayed here for 3 wonderful nights in very rural Rajasthan. Bronny also visited Botswana and the Okavango Delta in Africa, meeting up with some clients along the way and doing some planning for her small group tour in 2019.

Lisa headed off to Austria, Hungary and had a stopover in Qatar on her way home. A highlight for her was the city tour they did through Budapest, on a Segway! Monica visited Barcelona and had the opportunity to tackle the iconic El Camino de Santiago, making it all the way to Santiago de Compostela. Louise went on an incredible walking safari through Zambia, a trip she said was one of her favourite so far and following the safari she spent two weeks volunteering at a Rhino Sanctuary in Zimbabwe, helping to rehabilitate orphaned rhinos to get them ready to be released back into the wild.

We’re looking forward to assisting our clients in planning some fantastic trips in 2018. Check out our favourite destinations for the year ahead on page 8-9 of the magazine to help you start your planning! Give us a call on 08 8223 5905 to arrange a time to come in and speak to one of the team about your upcoming travel plans today!

Our next stop was the beautiful Relais & Chateaux Ol Donyo Lodge, which is set on 275,000 wild acres. Being a private concession, the only visitors were those staying at the lodge and because it was so verdant, there was game galore: elephant, eland, wildebeest, zebra, Grant’s gazelle, cheetah and lion, just to name a few. All this was set against the majestic backdrop of the Chyulu Hills, whose rich, black soils offered a completely different landscape to that in the Samburu.

We took full advantage of the many activities available at Ol Donyo, which included horseback riding, nature walks and game drives. One of the most interesting things we did was hike to an incredible lava tube. After our adventure, we took part in the time-honoured tradition of sipping sundowners as Kilimanjaro briefly poked her head out through the clouds.

Then it was on to Mara Plains Camp - one of my favourite camps - in the Olare Motorogi Private Conservancy, which shares a boundary with Kenya's famous Masai Mara National Reserve. On arrival, we were welcomed by a pride of 16 lions! All of our rooms came with professional camera equipment as well as Swarovski binoculars, so even those who weren’t interested in photography prior to leaving Australia got right into taking photographs.

The game viewing throughout our stay was unbelievable, and our expert Maasai guides were an extraordinary source of knowledge. We observed multiple cheetahs on the hunt, mating lions, vultures awaiting a meal, grunting pods of hippo, exceptional quantities of plains game and all manner of birdlife. And this was what Kenyans call the “low season”! The only thing we missed was the wildebeest and zebra migration from the Serengeti. Yet there were still up to 200,000 wildebeest and numerous zebra in the region.

After four memorable days at Mara Plains, we transferred to Angama Mara, a relatively new lodge perched on an escarpment that forms the western edge of the Masai Mara. To get there involved some thrilling river crossings and we enjoyed sensational game viewing with virtually no other vehicles around. We also savoured an Angama Mara-style tiffin lunch en route, beautifully presented with a bright red Maasai-inspired colour scheme.

One of our favourite safari destinations, Kenya has it all: dramatic Rift Valley scenery, colourful tribal communities and wide open grasslands supporting some of the greatest diversity of wildlife found on Earth. African Wildlife Safaris (AWS) CEO Steve Cameron travelled there with a group of friends in November, and had this to say about his trip:

“This was our 20th safari to Kenya and despite political tensions in the country, we were shown just how friendly, warm and welcoming Kenyans are. We selected Kenya specifically, because this time, we were travelling with six friends, and we wanted to introduce them to some of Africa’s most incredible scenic, natural and cultural highlights.

We deliberately chose November – the start of the low season – to avoid crowds and to see the landscape lush and green. Animals take advantage of these greener pastures to give birth, thus providing visitors with wonderful opportunities to witness new life. Our first destination – SaSaab – in arid northern Kenya was greener than we’d ever seen it, and on the transfer between the airstrip and lodge alone, we encountered elephant, Martial Eagle and various plains game. On arrival, a herd of elephants greeted us just below our rooms!

During our stay, we had the privilege of climbing Mount Ole Lokwe, which dominates the landscape. This was the first time in 35 years since visiting Samburu that we got to climb it! Up early, we drove for two hours to its base, before tackling 900 metres of ascent through about six different vegetation zones.

Our four Samburu guides appeared to enjoy the experience even more than we did. There was plenty of friendly rivalry between the younger warriors and elders, which we appreciated as much as the walk itself. And the views…what can I say but absolutely stunning!

Back at SaSaab, we experienced a game drive on the surrounding Westgate Trust private concession, located about 30 minutes west of the Samburu National Reserve. Despite rain, the game viewing was superb, uncovering all of the region’s endemic species: Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra.

We also visited SaSaab village with our guide, Jacob, who grew up there. We were warmly welcomed and experienced great cultural interaction, with me presenting a photobook to the residents (containing images from last year’s trip) and one of our friends, Ian, participating in a game of Mancala, a traditional East African board game.

Later, we had the opportunity to watch the “morani” (warriors) and unmarried girls of the Lkichami (“loved ones”) community take part in a ceremonial dance on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. The warriors, tall and resplendent in their elaborate headdresses, sang of battles long past, triumphant cattle raids and beautiful maidens. The dancers came forth one by one to show off their strength, jumping straight upwards as high as they could, each trying to outdo the one before. Then the girls joined in and a line of dancers snaked their way along the sand, as graceful as giraffes. We ‘’muzungus’’ subsequently joined in the fun, trying to keep up and probably looking hopelessly ungainly in the process.

Forever Kenya

During our stay at Angama Mara, we saw a multitude of big cats as well as a plethora of other iconic species such as elephant, impala and warthog. Then, it was time to celebrate the end of our safari with some traditional Maasai dancing and a delicious meal accompanied by fine Bordeaux.

We concluded our travels at the quirky Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, a boutique hotel where endangered Rothschild's giraffes come to eat out of the hands and mouths of guests at breakfast and afternoon tea. Up to 12 giraffe reside at Giraffe Manor at any one time, and all have distinct personalities. To be so close to wild giraffe is an incredible experience and you really get a true sense of their size!

We benefited greatly from incredible value by travelling in November, and to top it all off, every single Kenyan we met was warm, friendly, and incredibly proud of their country and culture despite the country’s current political problems. So why wait? Start making plans to visit Kenya – it’s an unbelievable destination.”

PONANT Polar Experience

Live the Ultimate Polar Experience with PONANT

When you choose a PONANT ‘Expedition’ cruise, you are choosing comfort, refinement and discovery. Irrespective of the destination, from the icy poles to the great Amazonian rivers, the remote lagoons of the Pacific or the jungle of Borneo, PONANT takes you off the beaten track, as close as possible to nature and far from other maritime routes. Delivering a perfect blend of authentic expedition experiences with the luxury of small ship cruising.

A day of exploration can be followed by an evening of fine cuisine and wines, a relaxing post dinner drink or taking in a live show or performance. You will want for nothing. The service is thoughtful and discrete, the facilities comprehensive - all in all, a very civilised way to explore remote locations.

Spoilt for choice, these luxury expeditions extend around the globe visiting destinations often inaccessible to large ships. A Polar voyage takes you into an unearthly world of fantastical icescapes, unpredictable conditions and mind-blowing encounters with wildlife.

To get as close as possible to the secluded lands of the Far North of The Arctic and the mysterious White Continent regular Zodiac® excursions and impromptu shore visits in small groups are included. In the company of expert naturalist guides, aboard a Zodiac®, enjoy magical moments and head off to discover unique, secret and rich wildlife between the ice floes and the long beaches of dark sand.

Composed of rock, water, deserts, glaciers and imposing coastline, the Svalbard archipelago in The Arctic is home to a fauna that is as varied as it is exceptional. Bearded seals, belugas, puffins, polar bears, whaling stations and trapper huts are just some of the treasures waiting to be discovered here. Between millennial glaciers and carved mountains, Spitsbergen in the Northern summer is a place that never sees the night. We invite you to explore this great white desert where the polar bears reign as lords of the ice.

In the polar regions, no two days are the same. With each morning comes the promise of a new day rich in thrills and adventure. Below is a passengers account on a PONANT Antarctica Luxury Expedition.

7.00 am I am up early this morning, impatient to find out what this new day has in store. Our ship is cruising off the coast of immaculate icy lands. The sun has not long risen, giving the sky a wonderful pinkish orange hue. The light’s many reflections on the ice offer us a palette of extraordinary shades of white and blue. The silence is serene. The day promises to be beautiful.

9.00 am The team of naturalists lead us through these icy regions. For more than an hour we sail around our first icebergs and instantly fall under the charm of these blue-tinged giants. Suddenly, we hear an excited cry from the Zodiac® that is following us: a leopard seal is playing in our boat’s wake!

11.30 am Back on the ship, we are greeted with delicious mugs of hot chocolate and cinnamon tea served in the panoramic lounge. Huddled around a nautical chart, we chat about our impressions of the morning’s adventures and show one another our photos.

2.30 pm After a gourmet lunch, it is time to head to the theatre on deck 4 where our lecture and information meetings are held. It is here that Nicolas, Alain or Raphaël tell us about the day’s programme. Suddenly, the Captain’s voice rings out: “Whale on the portside!” From the bridge, he invites us to make our way to the exterior decks: a majestic humpback whale is crossing our path. It is a magical moment.

3.30 pm For the second time today we board our Zodiac®. This time we are heading to Paulet Island. The pilot cuts a path through the ice floes to reach the shore. Over 100,000 couples of Adélie penguins welcome us and we are quickly encircled by some of these small, rather bold animals that find our presence highly intriguing.

5.30 pm Back on the ship. The pastry chef has outdone himself once again: cakes, madeleines and mini tarts await us in the Grand Salon, along with hot drinks. This delicious moment is just what we need to warm up.

6.00 pm As on most days, the team of Naturalists host lectures in the theatre. Didier tells us about his experiences as a District Chief wintering in Adélie Land, and José talks to us at length about Southern Ocean marine mammals.

7.30 pm The day ends with a delicious cocktail reception held on the exterior decks hosted by the captain. As the sun slowly sets on

the horizon, it is time for dinner. Later, some of the passengers will attend a piano concert. But for me, I am taking up the offer of a twilight zodiac safari in search of more wildlife amongst the Antarctic ice. The end of the perfect day.

Unlike the current global cruising trend to build larger ships PONANT has taken another route, specialising in small-ship luxury expedition cruises, where luxury merges with adventure. Whilst PONANT already boasts the youngest and most modern fleet of luxury expedition ships in the world, they are expanding their fleet to nine, with new builds.

In 2018 and 2019, PONANT will welcome four new ice-class Explorer ships, smaller iterations of the current fleet. With just 92 staterooms and suites, these new luxuriously appointed ships will also be packed with the latest in maritime and environmental protection technology.

The first ever PC2 Polar Class luxury cruise ship, will be launched by PONANT in 2021. A hybrid electric Icebreaker, powered by Liquified Natural Gas. The Icebreaker will be a real pioneer in terms of environmental protection. More than just conventional cruises, these are true expedition polar odysseys. Reach the Geographic North Pole, complete a crossing of the Arctic Ocean and discover Greenland's extreme North East or probe the icy wilderness of Antarctica.

It is easy to see why PONANT is the No.1 Polar Specialist in the world.

The Team at Peregrine Travel Centre SA can help you with picking the perfect PONANT Polar experience for you!

Book any PONANT cruise through Peregrine Travel Centre SA before 31 April 2018 and receive a bonus €200pp on board credit!

South Georgia

OUR TOP 10 PICKS FOR 2018-19!

998

It’s a new year, time to sit down and think about where on our travel bucket list we would love to visit next. We have selected our top 10 destinations from each region of the world and put together our very own travel wish list for 2018-19.

There are so many beautiful places in the world just waiting to be explored.

South Georgia

If experiencing Antarctica has been on your to do list, there’s no better time than the present to start planning (there’s a total solar eclipse happening in December 2021 – if you want the experience of a lifetime you may want to consider travelling during this time!) Whether as a stand alone expedition or part of an Antarctic voyage, do not overlook South Georgia. This remote outpost is home to the Wandering Albatross and colonies with thousands of King Penguins. Quite simply it is an animal lovers dream destination.

Central Asia

A destination that has started to gain more interest recently, and one we’re glad to see rising in popularity. Rather than picking just one country here, we’ve gone with the whole collection of ‘The Stans’, as there are some fantastic group tour and private itineraries available. Discover the fascinating landscapes, mountain lakes, culture and history dating back centuries, of these countries situated along the iconic Silk Route. Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are destinations you can visit to take in this unique and magical part of the world.

Tasmania

Often overlooked, Tasmania is a fantastic option for a short break throughout the year. If you are wanting a holiday a little closer to home but one that still offers a wide variety of scenery, wildlife and activities then this is a great option.

Our recommendation for something a little different, is the Maria Island walk. Situated just off the east coast of Tasmania this gentle four-day walk will take you through this World Heritage listed national park, where you’ll learn about the history of the island and experience the rare Tasmanian wildlife and spectacular views along the way!

Oman

The perception on travel to the Middle East is slowly changing, and although there are destinations which are still not safe to travel to, you can’t let that stop you from experiencing some of the truly magical beauty of destinations in the Middle East. Oman is one of those destinations. Nestled on the Arabian Peninsula, the nation boasts remarkable natural beauty and the perfect mix of modern and ancient Arabia. From picturesque mountain scapes, to vast desert and an immaculate coastline – Oman has a little bit of everything to offer a variety of travellers.

Canadian Rockies

This region has always been on traveller’s lists, with fantastic options for rail, or land adventures. It can be tailored to suit any travellers style and budget. We have fabulous recommendations for staying in unique lodges or for those wanting a more active adventure there are great options for cycling and walking in these areas. Incredible scenery, beautiful lakes, an abundance of wildlife and depending on which season you choose to travel a totally different experience.

Zambia

Zambia is a slice of African paradise. Our team member Louise embarked on an 8-day walking safari in Zambia in November and has said it was one of her best trips to date! This wildlife lovers dream has a lot less tourists compared to other African destinations – which means that in most cases it is just your small group on safari with the surrounding wildlife and no other vehicles.

Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan

This cluster of eastern European countries provide an incredible alternative for those who have already travelled through Europe but are looking for an alternative

Central Asia

Tasmania

Zambia

to explore. Astonishing natural scenery provides an opportunity for you to explore ancient castles, towers and churches on foot or by bike. The region has a variety of cultures, languages, traditions and cuisines that you will experience along the way.

Mo’orea

This South Pacific island is nestled amongst the French Polynesian islands close to Tahiti and less than an hour flight away from Bora Bora. With breathtaking views (just as good as its neighbour Bora Bora), Mo’orea is a fantastic option for those wanting a getaway close to home and not wanting to break the budget. Think relaxing and beautiful beaches, great hiking trails and perfect conditions for snorkellers and scuba divers to explore the unique reef.

Costa Rica

This rugged Central American destination filled with rainforests, diverse wildlife, beaches and spectacular natural sights has been on our radar for a while. In fact we are taking a group over this year to explore this incredible destination! With coastlines on the Caribbean and Pacific oceans, volcanoes to trek to, national parks to explore, suspended canopies to wander over and some unique wildlife like the toucan, sloths and more, Costa Rica will leave you speechless and wanting more.

Canadian High Arctic

Arctic Circle and north of Alaska, but not quite the end of the world. Consisting of Baffin, Devon and Ellesmere Islands, this region offers an indescribable Arctic experience. Mountains, fjords, glaciers and pack ice all make up this rugged wilderness area, providing the perfect backdrop to witness animals such as walrus, beluga whales, muskox and the elusive polar bear! You can access this area by plane or on an expedition along the breathtaking Northwest Passage.

TOP 5 REASONS WHY WE LOVE ADVENTURE CRUISING:

1. It’s all about the destination – stop at the little islands the big ships can’t

reach and learn about the culture from local guides.

2. A small ship means you sail straight into a port, or drop anchor

wherever you like for a swim off the back of the boat.

impact on local communities.

4. You’ll have a spacious cabin with an en suite for the entire

journey – which means only unpacking once.

OUR TOP PICKS FOR WALKING

NEW: Walking the French Riviera – 8 Days

Located on the Franco-Italian border, on the edge of the warm Mediterranean sea, Menton is a delight for any visitor. It is easy to see how it earned its nickname 'The Pearl of France,' combining a city of gardens, seaport, beach resort and a paradise for hikers all rolled into one! With the Alpine chain dropping into the sea at the level of French/Italian border, it is also an ideal location for an Exodus guided walking holiday.

NEW: Dingle Peninsula Walk, Ireland – 8 Days

The Dingle Peninsula is one of the most spectacular regions on the West Coast of Ireland. Moreover, it is steeped in history, mythology and traditional Irish culture. There is no other landscape in Western Europe with the same density and variety of archaeological monuments. This mountainous finger of land, jutting into the Atlantic Ocean, has supported various tribes and populations for at least 6,000 years. The Dingle Peninsula offers magnificent views in all directions making it an ideal location for a walking holiday.

GROUP: Mt Blanc Highlights – 8 Days

The circuit of Mont Blanc is one of the finest walking routes in the Alps. It is in reality a series of paths linking the seven valleys that surround the highest mountain in Western Europe, Mont Blanc. To complete the whole circuit normally takes a fortnight, but for those with less time this one-week Exodus tour takes in the most outstanding sections with beautiful mountain highlights each day.

SELF GUIDED: Walking the Camino – 11 Days

The Camino de Santiago de Compostela is one of the world's oldest pilgrimage routes, and in 1987 was declared the first European Culture Route. Since Apostle James’ tomb was discovered in the ninth century, the route has also been known as 'The Way of St James'. The symbol of the scallop shell, typically found on the Galician shores, marks the way. On completion of at least 100km of the route, it is a great tradition to receive a certificate or ‘compostela’.
