We welcome the month of July with fun, adventure, and exploration. In this issue of Travel Journal we take you off the beaten track to bring you exciting escapades in South Africa (page 28), Okinawa (page 20) and many other intriguing countries. In recent years, more people are developing a taste for adventure, and as such we hope to inspire you with our own travels.

Having said that, I would like to share my own trip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. As a city mostly known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage, it came as a complete surprise to me when I discovered a different side to this ancient city. From taking a jeep ride to watch a spectacular sunrise near the peaks of Mount Merapi, to cave tubing down a river through the Goa Pindul Cave, I was immersed in activities that were both unforgettable and exhilarating. My most memorable experience was a hike up Gunung Api Purba, a mountain situated in Nglanggeran village, where I was greeted by a panoramic view of my surroundings.

In addition to exploring the rugged landscapes of Yogyakarta, I learned a lot about Javanese culture and history by visiting Taman Sari Water Castle, Yogyakarta Palace, and Borobudur - a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 8th century. Not only was I impressed by the rich culture of this city, but was also immensely pleased with my trip. If you are looking for a getaway that can give you your money’s worth, Yogyakarta is your best bet.

Step away from the conventional offerings of entertainment, dining, and sightseeing options, and let us take you on a journey you won’t soon forget. Read further and let our features inspire you as we bring a new perspective on travel.

Discover the Mingei Spirit at Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu Steeped in 130 years of history, Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu revamps its concept and facilities without compromising the rich history of the building. Encompassing the spirit of Mingei, “art of the people”-a Japanese folk art movement in the 1920s and 1930s-Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu stands as a testament to the culture and tradition of the Japanese people. Although Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu has been re-designed throughout the years, the distinctive character of the building was not lost through the refurbishment. On the contrary, the hotel’s identity was reinforced after the restoration of the establishment. The hotel welcomes its guests to its rich, dark brown interiors, and exudes a cosy and romantic ambience. The roomy lobby and guest rooms are furnished with Mingei furniture, as well as wood-beamed ceilings, and stucco walls that reflect and retain the architecture of 1887-when it was founded. The hotel also houses other additionally attractive amenities that guests can enjoy. The food and beverages served in the quaint in-house coffee shop and restaurant add a local touch to the coffee and cuisine by utilising fresh local ingredients. Guests can also bring back a piece of Mingei folk art tradition by visiting tsumugu, a souvenir store that sells dressing gowns and other merchandise that embodies the Mingei philosophy. The hotel aims to be a proud contributor to the region by sustaining and encapsulating the spirit of Mengi.

In this year’s shopping festival, Istanbul will welcome visitors to modern shopping complexes that provide a myriad of discounted goods under one roof. During this month, travellers will also have an opportunity to taste the Ottoman imperial cuisine. Falling on the first week of the Istanbul Shopping Festival, the “Sugar Feast” will tantalise taste buds with a number of Turkish dishes and desserts.

Istanbul merges the candid soul of the Orient with Western dynamism, and presents visitors with an opportunity to walk away with a unique experience when they explore this distinct city. Apart from attending the festival, shoppers can visit the 120 shopping centres that

are situated all over the city, and walk around the lively streets like Bağdat Street, İstiklal Street and Nişantaşı, or hunt for authentic, handmade items by local designers and craftsmen sold in the less touristy parts of town.

Visitors looking to take a short break from shopping, may wish to explore the city’s attractions that are steeped in the rich ubiquitous Turkish culture that is seen and practiced in every corner of this old city.

Istanbul’s Famed SightsEncompassing over 8500 years of history, culture and traditions, Istanbul is home to iconic landmarks, breath-taking sceneries, divine delicacies, and superb shopping locations that easily enchant and intrigue even the most sophisticated traveller. Most of Istanbul’s major attractions encapsulate the country’s timeless history and its rich culture. Places such as Topkapı Palace,

Hagia Sophia, and Bosphorus, are a few noteworthy places worth a visit. Topkapı PalaceTopkapı Palace used to be the home to the Ottoman sultans and princesses between the 15th and 19th centuries-during the reign of the Ottoman empire. Being the former residence to such important figures in history, it comes as no surprise that the palace boasts grand and opulent interiors, including a jewel-filled Treasury.

Hagia SophiaNoted for being a famed monument both for Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires, this architectural feat is now a museum at the Turkish Republic. In its 1,400 years of existence, it served as a cathedral and a mosque. Visitors are not only captivated by the dome, which sits at 180 feet (55 meters) above ground, but also by the ornate mosaics embellishing the walls of the Hagia Sophia.

BosphorusKnown for being one of the best places in the country to watch a sunset, Bosphorus-a natural strait connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara-boasts impressive sights of Ottoman palaces, quaint wooden villas, and other interesting attractions located along its shores. Most travellers board a cruise to take a leisurely sightseeing trip along the 32 km long waterway.

So get ready to be enchanted by Turkey, and set aside the month of July for the Istanbul Shopping Festival.

A HASSLE-FREE JOURNEY TO THE HIMALAYASFilled with stunning natural beauty and unforgettable sights steeped in history, traversing the Himalayas has always been believed to be laborious. However, in recent years the growing infrastructure has paved well-connected routes that provide accessibility, making exploration of this once challenging mountain range much easier.

TDThe Himalayas has always been known for its

astounding beauty and imposing peaks. The thought of spending your vacation on the highest mountain range in the world may seem

daunting, since the common misconception among most people is that this renowned destination is best experienced through hours of strenuous hiking and trekking. However, the improved infrastructure and extensive network of roads connecting to the surrounding regions has made Himalayas easily accessible by foot and by vehicle. The destination that once drew intrepid and adventurous travellers is now also becoming a vacation spot for visitors who would like a more slow-paced trip.

Spanning thousands of miles across five countries: Nepal, Bhutan, China (Tibet), and Pakistan, the Himalayas can be divided, from the South to the North, into the Outer or Shivalik Himalayas, the Lower Himalayas, the High Himalayas and the Trans Himalayas. The Shivalik Himalayas consists of intriguing places such as Jammu, Dharamsala, and Shimla. Whereas the Lower Himalayan range includes the scenic valleys of Kashmir, Kullu-Manali Valley, and Kathmandu.

The Shivalik Himalayas One of the most visited attractions in Jammu is the Bahu Fort. Located 5 km away from the city center, the fort stands prominently on a rock face on the left bank the river Tawi. Estimated to be 3000 years old, the Bahu Fort was built

by Raja Bahu Lochan when he witnessed a tiger and a goat drinking water from the Tawi River. He believed that the non-aggression displayed by both creatures would inspire people to live peacefully with each other if the fort was build there.

Dharamsala, a city in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is situated on the edge of the Himalayas and as such, is enclosed by lofty cedar trees and lush greenery. This exquisite Himalayan city is also the home to the Dalai Lama and Tibetans in exile. One of the most visited attractions in Dharamsala is the Shiva-Baijnath Temple, which was built in the 13th century.

Shimla too has its fair share of major attractions and must-visit sites. The capital of Himachal Pradesh has retained its colonial heritage through the years. The Viceregal Lodge, for instance, not only stands as a testament to Shimla’s past-Shimla was the former summer capital of the British- but also reflects the impressive history and architecture of the city. The Viceregal Lodge, or Rashtrapati Niwas was once the residence of the British Viceroy of India.

The Lower Himalayan RangeCool summer air, alpine scenery, and placid lakes create an ambience of tranquillity and serenity for travellers visiting Kashmir. Dubbed “India’s Switzerland,” the region attracts tourists from near and far to discover and explore its enchanting sights. One of the most visited locations include Dal Lake in Srinagar, known as the Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir and Srinagar’s Jewel, this expansive and tranquil lake reflects the vibrantly coloured houseboats-also known as shikaras- floating on its surface with mirror-like clarity.

Numerous houseboats are embellished with intricate designs, and painted with striking hues of yellow, blue and green. These small yet durable shikaras carry up to four people at one time. However, travellers looking for a more immersive experience can board one of the many opulently fashioned deluxe houseboats, which are much bigger in size and include dining areas, bedrooms, and washrooms-basically a floating hotel that comes with all the conventional amenities.

Much like the paradisal city of Kashmir, the Kullu Valley is an idyllic location cradled by the Pir Panjal Range to the north. Raging rivers, charming mountain villages and thick pine forests captivate travellers from near and far. Manali is a high-altitude Himalayan resort town and the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti. The town’s positioning makes it an ideal place for backpacking and is noted for being a romantic honeymoon destination.

With a population of over a million people, Kathmandu -the capital city of Nepal- is the biggest metropolis in the Central Region. Some of its popular spots include, Pashupatinath Temple, National Museum of Nepal, and Kathmandu Durbar Square-a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The High HimalayasThe High Himalayas, also commonly referred to as the Tibetan Plateau, is notable for its snow-capped peaks and passes that reach up to 3200m in height. It comprises of regions such as Ladakh, Tibet as well as Spiti Valley, which are known for their natural beauty. Steeped in culture and folklore, these regions are home to a significant number of temples, monasteries and palaces. In addition to housing timeless and historic buildings, the region is also inhabited by various ethnic groups living in quaint villages. Tibet impresses travellers with the rich history, culture and tradition of the Tibetan people. Whereas places such as Ladakh and Spiti Valley boasts sweeping views of rugged terrains and dramatic, arid mountains that exude a kind of blissful remoteness that inspires quiet contemplation and introspection.

North Korea – also known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) – was once the last place anyone would include on their list of must-visit places. However, in recent

years tourism to this mysterious country has increased. In fact, the country is actively promoting its tourism sector to draw more visitors to the country.

If you’re planning to visit North Korea, here’s your chance. Universal Travel, the exclusive GSA for Air Koryo - the official carrier of North Korea, is providing exclusive and affordable flights to this intriguing country. Visit this nominally communist state that has

defied all expectations and survived a quarter of a century since the collapse of the Soviet empire.

Contrary to popular belief, the process of obtaining tourist visas for North Korea is actually very simple, all you need to do is to book a pre-planned tour. However, travellers should abide by the rules when visiting North Korea. Visitors should refrain from travelling outside the designated tour areas without their Korean guides, and taking photographs of restricted locations.

PyongyangPyongyang is the capital of North Korea and the largest city in the country. The biggest tourist attraction is undoubtedly its remarkable architecture and outstanding structures such as Tower of Juche Idea, The Arch of Triumph, Chollima the Statue, Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, Monuments to the Victory and Monument to Three Charters for National Reunification.

One iconic attraction that you will not want to miss is the Mansudae Grand Monument, which was renovated in 2012 with two bronze statues of the late North Korean leaders Kim II-sung and Kim Jong-iI. This 65-foot bronze statue was unveiled in 1972 to celebrate Kim II-sung’s 60th birthday, and the statue of Kim Jong-iI was added in 2012 following the Dear Leader’s death. Rumor has it that the statue was originally covered in gold lead, but was removed on the insistence of the Chinese government, who were heavily funding the regime.

North Koreans regard this monument with great respect and they believe travellers should treat it with the same reverence and respect as they do. Hence, your tour guides will usually buy flowers and elect one member from the group to place them at the foot of the bronze statue, before the whole group bows before it.

Since the leaders of DPRK are highly respected public figures, travellers need to practice caution when posing for photos with the statues. Pictures should frame the entire statue without cropping off any part, as it is considered offensive.

Located 8km from the centre of Pyongyang is Mangyongdae, where Kim II-sung was born and raised. The complex consists of three areas, the house, a water well, and a viewing platform situated at the top of the hill. Travellers will get a tour of the house and will be briefed on President Kim II-sung’s patriotic and revolutionary life story.

Returning back to Pyongyang, travellers will get an opportunity to board the Pyongyang Metro, which is the deepest metro in the world. At 360 feet below surface level, it takes almost four minutes to descend to the train platform. The station itself is breath-taking, it is a great edifice reminiscent of the palace with a variety of chandeliers that brighten this fascinating underground tunnel. Large walls and pillars are adorned with sculptures, embossed carvings, mosaics and other murals.

Mt. KumgangExplore Mt Kumgang and its unspoiled countryside, picturesque peaks, lagoons and ravines. Blooming flowers seem to glow and shimmer with life in the springtime. This is also how Mt. Kumgang got its name - Mt. Kumgang means Diamond Mountain in Korean.

The region’s highest peaks reach no less than 1600 metres above sea level and boast breath-taking sceneries. Trekking paths are cleverly designed to bring you through the gist of Mt. Kumgang. Mt. Kumgang is divided into Inner, Outer and Sea Kumgang, featuring impressive waterfalls, streams, ancient temples and a museum.

Outer Kumgang is a major tourist destination, home to the iconic Kuryong Falls - one of the three famous waterfalls of Korea. Pick the trekking

course of your choice and discover the untouched beauty of Mt Kumgang.

Mt. MyohyangMt Myohyang means Mysterious Fragrant Mountain in Korean, it sits in the center of the country and is one of the five famous mountains in Korea. Mt Myohyang is known for its awe-inspiring valleys, steep cliffs and magnificent ridges. In addition to its stunning scenery, it is also the home to the legendary King Tangun, the forefather of the Korean people. This area is now a national park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Fresh air and unspoiled nature provide a pleasant hiking experience when travelling on one of the many trails. The mountain is also home to the Pohyon temple and the International Friendship Exhibition, both of which are worth a visit. International Friendship Exhibition Hall is a huge complex that displays over a 100,000 gifts presented to Kim II-sung and Kim Jong-iI by various world leaders and figures. These

gifts range from a bullet-proof limousine from Stalin to opulent train cars from Mao Zedong.

After visiting the International Friendship Exhibition Hall, you will take a quick drive to Pohyon Temple. Dating back to the 11th century, this temple is one of the last remaining Buddhist temples in North Korea.

PanmunjomTake a trip down to Panmunjom that straddles the North and South Korean border. Visit the Armistice Agreement Halls, where the truce-Korean War Armistice Agreement-was signed. Talks will be given by a North Korean military personnel, who will explain the history of the site before you head over to visit the Military Demarcation Line. Travellers will have a chance to explore the blue buildings located at the Joint Security Area (JSA).

ADVENTURE TIME IN OKINAWAOkinawa may be a part of Japan, but the idyllic tropical island is in a league of its own.

On board one of the first direct chartered flights by SilkAir, I reached the Japanese prefecture in less than five hours. From my window seat, I was greeted by the sapphire hues of the East

China Sea and the buttermilk rays of the sun as the plane descended onto the tarmac of Naha Airport.

Life on the island of Okinawa moves at its own pace, and Okinawans take pride in setting themselves apart from their Japanese counterparts. From the succulent slices of Agu Pork (an Okinawan breed) to the melodious tunes of the three-stringed sanshin (think Asian banjo) and being home to the endangered Yanbaru kuina (a gorgeous little orange-beaked bird), it was clear that Okinawa was not just another run-of-the-mill Japanese state.

The first stop that would kick start my adventure-filled holiday was in a little town called Motobu. Located a two-hour drive away from Naha in the Northern territory of Okinawa, Motobu juts out from the prefecture. I got checked into the Marine Piazza Okinawa, a lovely and spacious hotel decked in teal and sea-blue decor; rooms with views of a well-kempt backyard and ocean; and best of all, it is a two-minute walk away from the Motobu Genki Mura (or Motobu Wellness Village).

MotobuMotobu Genki Mura is a recreational facility offering a wide range of activities. From marine sports to cultural experiences, Motobu Genki Mura has it all. One of the

popular attractions is the Dolphin Program, which gives visitors a chance to play and swim with these friendly mammals!

I also got a chance to get up close and personal with two playful dolphins at the dolphin enclosure. Sitting on the edge of the moss-covered wooden platform, with my legs dangling in the water, the 300-kilo mammal (her name was Pamu) was just a few meters away from me. Before entering into Pamu’s territory, we had to be introduced. After a few rounds of games involving hand gestures and light strokes on Pamu’s body, I was welcomed into the heart of the dolphin’s home. The highlight of the program was being able to ride on the dolphin’s back! Holding on to the dorsal fin with two hands for dear life, I was whisked away with great force. The prospect of being in such close proximity with these mammals seemed frightening at first; but after learning about them and experiencing what large bundles of joys they are, it was clear my fears were unwarranted.

After bidding adieu to my dolphin friends, I was all ready to fly board - one of the latest and most popular water sport activity in Okinawa. It involves strapping on a pair of ‘water boots’ that are connected to a jet which uses water pressure to propel you up into the air, allowing you to ‘fly’ above the waters. After multiple failed attempts, I finally managed to keep my knees straight and long enough to rise above the waters, emulating the iconic Ironman pose. Unable to keep my balance for long, I would crash back into the ocean and come up gasping for air; euphoric and exhilarated,

determined to stay in the air longer in the next round. The activity lasted for approximately 30 minutes - so if you manage to get the hang of keeping your balance, the more times you get to soar above the waves!

The next morning, a snorkelling expedition was scheduled nearby Sesoko Island. Despite it being a cloudy day, I was surprised by the clarity of the water. I could see a multitude of marine life, including coral reefs in muted shades of pink and orange; some fish in bright shades of blue and purple, others multi-coloured. My guide picked up a gorgeous blue starfish and gestured for me to feel it-this provided me with a perfect photo opportunity. The swim was relaxed and I got to immerse in the captivating sights of the aquatic world for a good 40 minutes before heading back.

Lunch was at a cafe facing the sea, along Bise Fukugi Tree road. At Cahaya Bulan, I tucked into a bowl of flavourful rice topped with succulent pieces of pork (found in almost every meal in Okinawa), accompanied with vegetables.

NagoAfter a half hour drive after lunch, I found myself in a seemingly barren plot of land, with nothing but a wooden hut facing the wilderness. The hut belonged to Doki Doki Tours, provider of exhilarating buggy and hummer ride tours. The dirt course facing the hut was filled with wild turns and little slopes - and my heart started racing at the prospect of cruising through the terrain. Before we were allowed on to the tracks, we had a 10-minute crash course that helped us

to familiarise ourselves with the vehicle. After one cautious round around the circuit, I stepped on the accelerator with all the confidence of a 15 minutes of buggy-riding expert. We stopped for a trek through the wilderness, examining blind spiders and the curious shapes of tree trunks. A short stop was scheduled to savour some unsweetened tea in the wilderness, courtesy of our guide who had pre-packed plastic cups and a thermos flask. Mounting our buggies once again, we revved through the jungle back to the starting point. The slight drizzle made for an even more thrilling experience as the tyres traversed through the uneven, muddy ground.

YanbaruCome evening I checked into Yanbaru Manabi no Mori, a jungle lodge in the region of Yanbaru. Situated at the northern part of Okinawa, this subtropical zone is made up of mountains and hills covered with primeval forests. The facility offers rustic accommodation as well as packages for night-walks, bird-watching, jungle treks, and canoe tours.

In order to spot the elusive and endangered Yanbaru-kuina, we set off at 5:30 am. As the Yanbaru-kuina is a flightless bird, it can be spotted hopping along the sides of the road, looking for its morning meal. After a couple of minutes of driving around, we finally spotted one hopping from one side of the road to the other. It lounged around long enough for me to capture it on camera. The reactions I got from my tour guide, Mr. Yogi, and other locals when I shared my footage with them led me to the understanding that sightings of this bird were a rarity to be cherished.

After a scrumptious breakfast at the lodge, I set out once again for a River Guide Song Walk. The 1.5 hour trek was filled with mountain streams and many different species of flora and fauna. Every few minutes, my guide would pause to pick up a leaf, examine a plant, or catch a little lizard to explain with great enthusiasm its name and function. At the end of the hike, we had to go down a steep staircase to visit the waterfall - a wonderful end that

was worth the morning walk through the forest. We were back to the lodge just in time to tuck into yet

another excellent lunch prepared by the friendly ladies at the hotel’s only restaurant. In the afternoon, my guide and I set out for the much anticipated Jungle Canoe Tour. We were joined by a father together with his three young kids (who were no more than eight years old). Canoeing through the river dam felt surreal - the scenery that unfolded before me as we travelled upstream was unparalleled. Tiny jellyfish, water spiders, and an orchestra of wildlife in the dense jungle on both sides of the stream joined my tour guide and I as we meandered through the green waters. Upon reaching the tip of the stream, we parked our canoes against the rocks and waddled towards two mini waterfalls. The children occupied themselves, excitedly catching lizards and little fish in their nets, dropping them into the blue buckets that they had brought along. I could have lazed around that spot for hours, relishing the warmth of the sun while the cooling stream of water danced against my skin. Our canoe guide served us piping hot jasmine tea with sweet brown-sugar snacks, and we sat on the rocks, savouring our tea as we watched the sun hit the stream in a way that made the waters sparkle. To say that the afternoon was perfect would be an understatement.

The genuine smiles and hospitality I experienced from the people on this island, the tranquillity of the northern region

of Yanbaru, and the flavours of delicious Okinawan cuisine all made coming back to reality (read: city life) awfully tough. Hold on to your heart because if you visit Okinawa, this little island will capture it.

Special thanks to Okinawa Prefectural Government Singapore Representative Office for the trip and Mr. Yogi, my personal tour guide.

You get to sit with their chief, dance, and sing with the locals and dine like the Fijians as well. The safari tour is all about treating your senses to a truly Fijian experience. Towards the end of the trip, partake in a melodious farewell song and bid goodbye to your new Fijian friends.

Awesome Foursome TourAwesome Foursome Tours comprises of River Canoeing,

Magic Waterfalls Swim, Bili-Bili Bamboo Rafting and a Fijian Village Tour, which will take you away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Begin the tour by enjoying an exhilarating cruise up the beautiful Navua River, and treat yourself to breath-taking views along the way. After which, a Fijian Warrior will escort you to the village meeting house (bure).

Experience age-old customs and traditions, which welcome high chiefs or very important visitors with a customary Kava ceremony. Enjoy a tour of the village and

learn basket weaving techniques. Watch as lovo, a Fijian traditional way of cooking is unveiled and enjoy a hearty meal with the locals followed by some dancing.

Explore Navua River’s biggest waterfall, which takes around five minutes by foot. Venture into the wilderness, meandering along cascading water to get to the first pool. Nothing beats taking a plunge into the refreshing cool water after trekking through the wilderness. For the more adventurous travellers, guides are available to take you to the bigger falls.

Ride on the unsinkable “HMS Bilibili”, a re-enactment of the century’s old way of transport before roads or motors were introduced. Embark on this smooth ride for about 30 minutes downstream and take in the beauty of emerald rainforests. Throughout the trip, you will hear nothing but the sounds coming from the surrounding nature.

SARAWAK, WHERE ADVENTURE LIVES If you are looking for a holiday spot brimming with adventure and adrenaline, then Sarawak’s Mulu National Park is your best shot.

Teeming with lush greenery, vast wilderness, and extensive cave systems, Gunung Mulu National Park is Sarawak’s largest national park (544 sq km) and holds the grand title of Malaysia’s first

World Heritage site. It is most famous for its limestone cave systems, the world’s largest natural underground chamber - the Sarawak Chamber. The park’s main attractions are the four show caves; Wind, Clearwater, Deer and Lang Caves. You can also check out fascinating attractions such as the bat observatory; a 480m rainforest canopy skywalk, the world’s longest tree-based walkway; adventure caving trips to some of Mulu’s less accessible caves; the challenging Mulu Summit climb, the spectacular Pinnacles trail, and the historic Headhunter’s trail through remote rainforest scenery.

Getting ThereGunung Mulu National Park is located away from civilisation. The best way to get here is by either boarding the Malaysian Airlines or MASWings - a regional airline chartering flights from major cities in Sarawak such as Miri and Kuching into Mulu. For your convenience, you can choose the shuttle services to the national park from the airport provided by the local community.

Entrance FeesA trip to this geological wonder is no one-day affair. For a five-day pass, tourists are required to pay RM30, which grants you unlimited entries into the park. Even if you plan on exploring the vicinity in less than five days, the standard five-day pass is your only option - so make full use of your ticket by planning a five-day long itinerary!

Pack RightIt is essential to wear appropriate attire when trekking or

hiking through the jungle terrain. Let’s be honest, the worst things happen when we least expect it, hence it is crucial that you always carry items that come in handy when the situation calls for it. Water bottles, trekking shoes, insect repellent, first-aid kit, and even carrying some cash will go a long way if and when you find yourself in a potentially unpleasant predicament.

Accommodation OptionsThere are two accommodation options available

at Mulu. Stay close to the wilderness at Mulu World Heritage Area Accommodation, which

offers over five different bedroom options to suit your travel budget. However, if you would rather rest in a five-star luxury hotel after spending a day roughing it out in the jungle, then indulge in the first-class amenities offered by Mulu

Marriott Resort & Spa. The resort sits on the banks of the

Melinau River and features al-fresco breakfasts, a Balinese-

style spa, and private balconies with sweeping views of the rainforest.

Adventure Caving ExpeditionsAll caving expeditions need to be pre-booked prior to your arrival in Mulu. You would also have to be at a certain level of physical fitness before embarking on such a journey. There are varying levels of difficulty to suit the fitness level of every adventurer heading into Mulu. The Lagangs Cave, for example, is an ideal place to start with for those who are either at the beginner or intermediate fitness level. This site is also perfect for families, since the exploration of the caves will take about three to four hours. Experience nature’s architecture as you manoeuvre through

the darkness, equipped with helmets and torches. The Sarawak Chamber is a challenging two-day, one-

night tour for advanced explorers. Getting to the cave itself is no mean feat. After a three-hour trek, you will proceed along a river channel. The tour then proceeds up a steep boulder slope to the entrance of the chamber. As a physically challenging but rewarding journey, this tour allows you to camp overnight in the cave. Don’t worry about your meals - the tour guide will have all of it sorted out for you.

Terrific TreksIf you are up for a little overnight camping in the jungle after a vigorous trek through the wilderness, Mulu offers three different adventure treks. All trekkers will be accompanied by an official park guide.

One of the three popular treks around Mulu Park is the Headhunter’s Trail. The trek is organised by travel operators

and combines upriver travel, jungle trekking and an overnight stay at an Iban longhouse. It is an

excellent introduction to the rivers and the rainforest of Mulu. The trail itself follows

the route taken by Kayan headhunting parties who paddled up to the Melinau River to Melinau Gorge. Travel along the streams to explore the Wind and Clearwater caves, trudge along dirt

paths, picnic at an elevation of 1200 meters with an extraordinary view of the

Pinnacles, swim in the crystal clear waters of the Melinau River and spend the night in a

traditional Iban longhouse. This strenuous but rewarding trail can be booked through

various travel agents providing Mulu National Park tour packages or directly through the park’s official website.

DISCOVER SOUTH AFRICA’S WILD SIDEAs a land rich in wildlife and natural beauty, South Africa never ceases to captivate even the most seasoned traveller.

View of Mount Bromo from Gunang Penanjakan © Michael Ozaki

South Africa has always been a favourite amongst the intrepid and adventurous. The majestic Victoria Falls, diverse wildlife, and the flourishing plant life invites travellers from all around the world

to explore the country in the southernmost continent of Africa. Notable places like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Zimbabwe house manmade and natural attractions that captivate visitors from all walks of life.

Cape TownThe port city of Cape Town is home to numerous sights and sounds, including the iconic Table Mountain, prolific vineyards and villages steeped in culture and history. Designed to captivate and steal hearts, this city is anything but ordinary. After arriving at Cape Town, you may wish to visit the West Coast Ostrich Ranch to join a tour to learn more about the species. The family-owned ranch conducts informative tours, and features a restaurant that serves ostrich dishes. The ranch boasts an expansive view of South Africa’s most distinguishable Table Mountain, which sits in Cape Town overlooking the old city.

Recently recognised as the one of the natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain acquired its quirky name from its conspicuous and distinguishable flat-topped summit. It is also the only landmark to have a constellation of stars named after it. The site supports a thriving habitat of over a thousand rare and endangered floral species, and provides a

convenient escape from city life with its picturesque slopes and clear mountain streams. Towering over the city and serving as a backdrop for every postcard sold in town, the ubiquitous presence of this peculiar mountain can be felt within the boundaries of Cape Town. Visitors can ascend to its peaks via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which is sometimes affected by adverse weather conditions in the area, but it is certainly well worth the effort as many are enraptured by the wide-sweeping view of the entire town.

After immersing yourself in the stunning sights of Table Mountain and the surrounding areas, you may wish to continue your journey to Seal Island by boarding a boat. Seal Island in False Bay is home to an estimated 60, 000 Cape fur seals. As you approach the island, you will be welcomed by hordes of seals barking and basking in the sun. However, apart from the agile seals inhabiting the area, visitors may also see sharks, dolphins, and whales in the vicinity. If you’re lucky enough, you may see a great white shark leaping out of the water, performing the famed “Air Jaws” to catch a seal.

Taking a Cape Peninsula Tour or better known as Cape Point Tour is a must when visiting Cape Town. The tour covers the West coast of the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point and back along the East Coast. Activities include traversing along Chapman’s Peak Drive, and exploring the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. From Cape Point, the tour will continue to Simon’s Town where you will be able to view thousands of African Penguins waddling around Boulders

Victoria Falls and Botswana Zambia and Zimbabwe are known for their striking sceneries, outstanding landscapes, and most notably for the impressive Victoria Falls-located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Considered the largest fall in the world, the Victoria Falls stretches up to more than a kilometre in length and reaches up to a height of more than a hundred meters. The imposing view of the falls leaves many awestruck with its

tremendous torrents plunging over the cliff and into a gorge over a hundred meters below. You may wish to trek along the pathways at the top of Victoria Falls, which will present you with an unhindered view of the majestic waterfall. Guided tours provide a deeper insight into the history, geology, and wildlife in the surrounding area of the falls.

Another notable attraction that is worth checking out is the Chobe National Park in Botswana. Sandwiched between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the park is situated in northern Botswana in Kasane. Not only is Chobe National Park the country’s first national park, but is also the home to an enormous elephant population. The popular wildlife destination hosts a number of tours and activities including house boat excursions, Chobe Camping, and game drives.
