Marketing de sintonía fina

En el proceso de convertir al turismo en la tercera actividad económica más importante de Chile, tras la minería y la agroindustria, pasando de un tres por ciento a un seis por ciento del PIB, se hace necesario, de cara a las decisiones relevantes para el 2013, aplicar criterios de sintonía fina en lo que respecta al marketing en los mercados prioritarios definidos por Turismo Chile.En lo esencial, Travel Time está de acuerdo con la definición de los mercados prioritarios; estimamos que son los correctos, atendido el estadio actual del desarrollo turístico chileno. En consecuencia, y de acuerdo a lo expresado, pasamos a detallar qué entendemos por sintonía fina en nuestras acciones de marketing internacional:En primer lugar, Brasil, el gigante sudamericano, termina el 2012 con el peor resultado económico de los últimos 10 años. Se hace necesario entonces redefinir la promoción, enfatizando la presencia en aquellos estados que tienen un nivel de ingreso superior al promedio, como Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina y Rio Grande do Sul, por mencionar algunos.En el caso de la Argentina, afortunadamente, las provincias vecinas a Chile han tenido históricamente un ingreso superior al promedio de la nación, y son ellas las que nos proveen la mayor cantidad de turistas y la mayor frecuencia de viajes. En tal caso, más que la demanda, nuestras acciones deben orientarse a facilitar los medios de pago, tanto en moneda chilena como en pesos argentinos para evitar que, con miras a la alta temporada, turistas transandinos dejaran de venir por falta de dólares o gravámenes adicionales en el uso de la tarjeta de crédito. Hace un mes, aproximadamente, por una gentil invitación de ASATUR, la asociación de agencias de viajes, tuve la oportunidad de conocer y participar en la Feria Internacional del Turismo del Paraguay; una experiencia sorprendente, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta que los guaraníes, en la estimación de los especialistas, crecerán el 2013 en torno al 10 por ciento, la tasa más alta esperada en Sudamérica. Con sus seis y medio millones de habitantes, el quintil de más alto ingreso representa una atractiva cifra de un millón seiscientas mil personas a las cuales Chile tiene mucho que ofrecer, en especial las regiones de Valparaíso y Coquimbo, en una primera mirada.Con tres vuelos semanales Asunción-Santiago, operados por TAM Airlines y el buen hábito paraguayo de viajar usando los servicios de agencias de viajes y mayoristas, resulta un nicho sumamente interesante, que se enmarca en las acciones de sintonía fina a las que nos referimos en esta editorial.Un abrazo a todos los viajan con nuestra revista, y ojalá disfruten los contenidos y sugerencias de la presente edición de Travel Time.Cordialmente.

To make of tourism the third most relevant activity for Chile´s economy - after mining and agro-industry – achieving growth from a three percent to a six percent of the GDP, it is necessary to pay especial attention to promotion in the priority markets defined by Turismo Chile.As a magazine we agree with the definition of such markets considering the current stage of the tourism development in Chile. Brazil, the South American giant, finished 2012 with the worst economic performance of the past 10 years. Thus it is needed for us to redefine our promotion strategy, strengthening our presence in those states that are doing better such as Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, to name a few.In the case of Argentina, fortunately, our neighboring provinces have being doing better than the national average, providing Chile with a large amount of visitors. To seize this positive scenario we should facilitate payment in Argentinean pesos to avoid that during the high season tourists from Argentina would avoid coming because they lack dollars, or due to the additional charges to their credit cards. About a month ago, by a kind invitation of the Association of Travel Agencies of Paraguay (ASATUR,), I had the opportunity to take part in the country´s International Tourism Fair which was very interesting, considering that the Guarani population – according to experts - will grow in rate of a 10 percent in 2013, the highest growing expectation in South America. With six and a half million people, the highest income group represents an attractive consumer force of one million six thousand for which Chile has plenty to offer, specially the regions of Valparaiso and Coquimbo, at a first glance. With three weekly flights Santiago - Asuncion, by TAM Airlines, and the Paraguayan´s good habit of traveling with travel agents, they are a very interesting niche of buyers to be addressed with a well-planned strategy.For all those who travel, collect and enjoy our magazine, I hope we can continue to provide enjoyable and useful content about the wonders of world. Del Perú tomó el ceviche, y de Chile, la once. Que no es ni la hora del té inglesa ni el coffee break universal, sino toda una institución local. Adapted PeruvianIt might be the custom or a genuine acquired taste for Chilean habits. La identidad gastronómica boliviana está en pie de guerra. El Presidente Evo Morales pretende erradicar del país a la Coca-Cola, y remplazarla por una bebida típica similar al chileno mote con huesillo: el mocochinchi. Mientras esa pelea se define, en Chile el otro símbolo de la cocina boliviana gana terreno: la salteña. Esta empanada mantiene un carácter artesanal, lo que implica mucho trabajo para el único chef boliviano que las reparte a domicilio en todo Santiago. Dominado por el imponente volcán Llaima –que estalló recién en

2008- este paisaje se mantiene similar hace millones de años,

resguardando en su vegetación nativa una gran biodiversidad de

pumas, pudúes, güiñas y zorros.

“Ko-nquilliu” is the native Mapuche sound for the 60 thousand hectares northeast of Temuco city (southern Chile) that inspired the BBC success documentary, “Walking with dinosaurs”. Dominated by the great Llaima volcano, which erupted in 2008, this landscape has remained the same for millions of years, guarding within its wild forests a rich biodiversity of cougars, pudu (Chilean dear), güiña (small Chilean leopard) and foxes.

Una tormenta eléctrica cae furiosa sobre la selva de Yucatán. Es de noche en el sureste mexicano y, como en las películas, un rayo gigante ilumina por varios segundos

el tupido bosque de palmeras y vegetación húmeda desde la carretera, mientras en la radio aconsejan precaución y alejarse de cualquier elemento metálico que podría canalizar la muerte, como el año anterior cuando una persona fue alcanzada por una descarga mientras hablaba por celular.El agua es abundante sobre el parabrisas del auto, pero al fondo del diluvio se divisa una luz. La hermosa ciudad de Valladolid aparece como una ilusión en medio de la espesura, un oasis de agradable brisa nocturna, bellas construcciones coloniales, lujosas haciendas y, probablemente, la gastronomía más atractiva de México.

A furious electric storm falls upon the Yucatán jungle. It is nighttime in Southeast Mexico and, just like in the movies, for a split second, a giant lightning bolt lights up the forest of lush palm trees and tropical vegetation, as the radio announcer advises precaution, and to stay away from any metal object that could channel death, as just last year a person was struck while talking on a cell phone. The water pounds on the windshield, but at the end of the storm there is light. The beautiful city of Valladolid appears as an illusion in the midst of the thickness, an oasis of pleasant night breeze, beautiful colonial constructions, luxurious estates and, probably, the most attractive cuisine in Mexico.

Para gran parte de los turistas, esta ciudad de poco menos de 50 mil habitantes está marcada originalmente en sus bitácoras como un lugar de paso. Su ubicación a 157 kilómetros al oeste de Cancún, en el corazón del ex imperio Maya, la convierte en una especie de urbe-dormitorio para quienes desean visitar la zona arqueológica de Chichén Itzá (distante a 42 kilómetros de carretera) o uno de los más de 2.000 estanques naturales (aquí conocidos como cenotes) que hay en la península de Yucatán. Sin embargo, el encanto de sus calles adoquinadas ejerce un magnetismo irresistible que llama a detenerse y recorrerla. El secreto de Valladolid, o La Sultana de Oriente, como le llaman algunos, está en su esplendoroso pasado. Fundada en 1543 por tropas españolas lideradas por Francisco de Montejo, el espacio que ocupa la ciudad ha sido en varios momentos de la historia uno de los asentamientos mayas más activos (centro de la llamada Guerra de Castas). Eso, sumado a la herencia de los grandes hacendados de los siglos XVII y XVIII y la bonanza económica del siglo XIX (principalmente la industria textil, basada en el cultivo del henequén), le otorgan ese estilo único, mezcla de pueblo antiguo con una ciudad en el medio de la península.

El parque principal Francisco Cantón, en el centro fundacional de la ciudad, es el hito básico para comenzar a descubrir sus encantos. A su alrededor se erigen sus principales edificios históricos: el ayuntamiento, el correo, el Centro Artesanal Zací, el bazar municipal, dos hoteles, un banco y la imponente iglesia San Gervasio. For the majority of tourists who come, this city of little more than 50 thousand inhabitants is originally viewed as an entry point to Chichen Itza. Its location, 157 kilometers west of Cancun, in the heart of the ex-Mayan Empire, turns it into a stopover city of sorts for whomever wants to visit the archaeological zone of Chichen Itza (42 kilometers away from the highway) or one of the more than 2,000 natural basins (known as “cenotes” in this region) that exist in the Yucatan peninsula. However, the charm of Valladolid’s cobbled streets possesses an irresistible magnetism that calls for stopping and roaming them. The secret of Valladolid, or Sultana de Oriente, as some call it, is in its glamorous past. Founded in 1543 by Spanish troops led by Francisco de Montejo, the space this city occupies has been one of the most active Mayan settlements (and the center of the so-called Casts War). This thriving culture, in addition to its inheritance of the great estate owners of the XVII and XVIII centuries and the economic boom of the XIX century (mainly the textile industry, based on henequén crops), lend it its unique style—a mix of ancient town flavor with superclass city pleasures, in the middle of the peninsula.

Es una galería con tiendas de alimentos, objetos y ropa típica que por la noche se convierte en un inmenso comedor. Las pequeñas cocinerías que en el día alimentan a los locatarios, por la noche crecen para compartir un centenar de mesas en el hall central. La oferta en cada uno de estos lugares es abundante en platos locales, como el poc chuc (cerdo asado con cebolla y especias), la cochinita pibil (cerdo marinado con jugo de naranja y condimentos), el queso relleno (porción de edam rellena con carne molida, almendras y pimientos) y los panuchos (especie de tortilla frita servida con pollo, lechuga, cebolla y lonjas de aguacate). Puede darse el gusto de probar cada una de estas exquisiteces por menos de dos dólares o una degustación con todas ellas por seis. No deje de probar los refrescantes jugos naturales, especialmente el de naranja con chaya, una planta local que también se utiliza para hacer los tradicionales tamales, o la horchata (harina de arroz, canela y leche).

The main park, Francisco Cantón, is the foundational center of the city and the basic milestone where one begins to discover Valladolid’s charms. Around it are the main historical buildings: municipality, post office, Zací Crafts Center, the municipal bazaar, two hotels, a bank, and the imposing San Gervasio church. They all respect the architectural style of the grand adobe houses that host them, with their seamless facades, round columns, wrought iron balconies, and ceramic plaques, used as signs. With an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius during the year, the hot city has special charm once the sun goes down. The San Gervasio church is particularly impressive at night. Built for the first time in the same year the city was founded, its two bell towers are lit in such a way that they can be appreciated from every point of the city. One particularity is that the church has two faces. The main one is the result of a renovation done in the XVIII century, after the so-called “Crime of the Mayors,” when the mayors of the time assassinated two men for political and personal reasons. The municipal bazaar is another great surprise. A gallery with shops that sell food, objects, and typical clothing, the bazaar turns into a huge dining area in the evening. The little kitchens that feed the shop owners during the day become larger at night in order to serve the hundred tables that are set in the central hall. The

offerings at each one of these little spots abound with local dishes, such as poc chuc (roasted pork with onion and spices), cochinita pibil (pork marinated in orange juice and spices), stuffed cheese (a portion of edam cheese filled with ground beef, almonds and bell peppers), and panuchos (a type of fried omelette served with chicken, lettuce, onion, and slices of avocado). One can indulge in the pleasure of trying each one of these delicacies for less than two dollars each, or in a tasting of all of them for six. Remember to try the natural juices, especially the orange juice with chaya, a local plant that is also used to prepare traditional tamales, or horchata (rice flour, cinnamon, and milk).

Warning:Speed limits are taken very seriously by the Mexican police. Valladolid has narrow streets, few stop signs, and sometimes the limit is only 30 kilometers per hour. Do not make the mistake of thinking that just because you are driving slowly, they won’t calculate your speed: here, 30 is 30. If you are driving down the highway from Cancun, keep in mind that you will cross the state border (Quintana Roo-Yucatán), where there are usually police controls. Make sure all your documents are up to date.

Si busca algo más formal, por la misma calle 39, siempre frente a la plaza, está el restaurante Hostería del Marqués. Emplazado en una típica casona vallisoletana, ofrece platos yucatecas con un toque internacional. El pavo en relleno negro y la longaniza de Valladolid son un imperdible. Desde su interior se puede acceder al Hotel Mesón del Marqués, un cuatro estrellas con ambiente de hacienda en plena ciudad: grandes portones de madera, amplios patios interiores, terminaciones clásicas, piletas y jardines que moderan la temperatura.Antes de ir a dormir, puede asomarse por uno de sus balcones de madera y verse contemplar la ciudad como si fuese el huésped de un poderoso hacendado colonial.

Comienza un nuevo día y las llaves del auto que nos transporta se han quedado en el portaequipaje. Y no por casualidad, claro está. Valladolid no parece el lugar ideal para entregarle a un cerrajero el trabajo de abrir la puerta sin provocar daño a las chapas o a las junturas de los vidrios. Aquí nos llevamos la primera sorpresa. El ingenio de Saúl, acostumbrado a abrir los gruesos portones de fierro de las haciendas, resolvió el problema de la manera más engorrosa y limpia: desarmó el vehículo pieza por pieza hasta llegar al maletero en una obra de joyero. Pudiendo aprovecharse de la situación, se demoró poco más de una hora y cobró apenas 12 dólares, cerrando el negocio con un apretón de manos y una sonrisa.Es una muestra de la cultura comercial de la ciudad, en donde ganarse el respeto con honestidad y trabajo limpio es su manera. Así se hacía antes y así se sigue haciendo. Cerca del local de Saúl, también hay talabarteros y pequeños orfebres en oro y plata muy dispuestos a negociar el precio de lo que venden.

Los habitantes de Valladolid, gente amable y siempre sonriente, circulan por las estrechas y altas veredas (construidas así para las inundaciones) muy cerca de los muros, buscando la sombra de las cornisas. Todavía se pueden ver algunos con ropa típica: ellos de guayabera y pantalón blanco, ellas de huipil (prenda con encajes y terminaciones coloridas). En el Centro Artesanal Zací puede vitrinear algunas de estas prendas a precios razonables, junto a bordados, telares y otros objetos.En Valladolid hay siete barrios, pero Sisal es el más llamativo. Está a unas diez cuadras del centro y, aunque el calor pueda hacerlo dudar, no pierda tiempo: aquí no hay buses. La gente camina bajo el sol o se toma un taxi. Si escoge la segunda opción, tendrá el agrado de descubrir al detalle el Parque Sisal, la Calzada de los Frailes (una calle colonial restaurada hasta el más mínimo detalle, con adoquines, faroles, jardines y fachadas) y el Convento San Bernardino de Siena, un gigantesco templo construido en 1552 con forma de fortaleza. Sus 14 mil metros cuadrados se pueden recorrer con un guía que explica el significado de sus salones, jardines y pinturas.

If what you want is something more formal, also on 39th street, across from the square, is the Hostería del Marqués restaurant. Established in a typical Valladolid-style large house, this gem offers Yucatec dishes with an international touch. Black-stuffed turkey and the Valladolid sausage are a must. From the inside one can access the Mesón del Marqués Hotel, a four-star hotel, with a pleasant estate environment in the middle of the city—large wooden gates, broad interior patios, classical finishes, water fountains, and gardens that moderate temperatures. A new day begins and the car keys have been accidentally left in the trunk. Clearly not by chance. Valladolid does not seem like the ideal place to call on a locksmith to open the door without damaging the locks or the window edges. Here is where we encountered our first

big surprise. Saúl’s ingeniousness. Accustomed to opening the heavy iron doors at the estates, he solved the problem in the most complicated yet clean way possible: he took the car apart, piece by piece, until he reached the trunk in with what can only be called a jeweler’s touch. Though he could have taken advantage of the situation, he only took an hour and charged a mere 12 dollars, closing the deal with a handshake and a smile. That is the way it has always been done. Near Saúl’s shop there are also leather craftsmen, saddle makers and little jewelry shops that work with gold and silver—all of whom are very willing to barter what they sell. Valladolid’s inhabitants—friendly and cheerful—walk the narrow and elevated sidewalks (built thus because of the floods) very close to the surrounding walls, in search of the cornices’ shade. It is still possible to see some people wearing the typical dress: a guayabera and white pants for the men, and huipil (dress with lace and colorful finishes) for the women. At the Zací Crafts Center, one can find some of these pieces for reasonable prices, along with embroideries, textiles, and other interesting objects. In Valladolid there are seven neighborhoods, but Sisal is the

Esta vez, con el acento en sus tragos.El margarita yucateca (tequila, chile habanero y cilantro) y el cóctel maya (tequila y chaya) saben, a riesgo de ser criticados, mejores que sus originales. De fondo, una pareja de mariachis alterna su repertorio de canciones regionales con el clásico “Cielito lindo”. Se acaba de ir el sol y afuera la iglesia San Gervasio prende sus luces. Valladolid de noche vuelve a cautivar.

most alluring. It is ten blocks away from downtown, and though the heat may make one doubt, do not waste your time wondering: buses do not exist here. People walk under the sun or take a taxi. If you choose the latter option, you will enjoy the pleasure of discovering the details of Sisal Park, Calzada de los Frailes (a colonial street restored to the last detail, with cobblestones, lanterns, gardens, and facades), and the San Bernardino de Siena Convent—a gigantic temple built in 1552, shaped like a fortress. Its 14,000 square meters can be visited with a guide who explains the meaning of its halls, gardens and paintings.

A cenote is a sort of underground cavern in which a natural pool has formed. In the case of Zací, what is really impressive is that it is right in the middle of the city, a mere four blocks away from the main square. It is under the open sky, and one can walk around it by descending its 91 steps spiraling down to its edge, which spiral down to its edge. From above, one can see fish, such as the blind Yucatán fish—an endangered species—and bathe in the water, which is sometimes blue and sometimes green. Some tourists dive in, regardless of its 26 meters of depth. The water is cold enough to be refreshing on a hot afternoon, and an entry ticket costs about US$30. It also has a restaurant in the access area, where one can enjoy the surroundings. Back in the downtown area one can see Francisco Cantón Park, surrounded by hundreds of armed police. It might look like an odd scene, but it just happens that the area right across the street from the María de la Luz Hotel is their meeting area. Nearby is Las Campanas (on the corner of 41st Street), the ideal place for one last try of the local flavors, this time with an emphasis on the drinks. The Yucatec margarita (tequila, habanero chili and cilantro) and the Mayan cocktail (tequila and chaya) taste, with the risk of criticism, better than the originals. In the background, a couple of mariachis alternate their repertoire of regional songs with the classic “Cielito Lindo.” The sun has just set and outside, the San Gervasio church lights up. Valladolid captivates with its evening once more.

A nosotros nos tocó gente de Estados Unidos, Canadá, Sud-áfrica, Perú, Francia, España e Italia, mayoritariamente de nuestra generación, y también más jóvenes, buenos para las discotecas y los shows musicales, que habían muchos y muy buenos. Guardo estupendos recuerdos del guitarrista Víctor Cruz, que acompañaba las comidas de la tarde no-che, con quien cantamos las canciones de Los Beatles junto a la mirada divertida de Mauricio y Víctor, dos profesiona-les chilenos de gran experiencia y calidez, garzones en los restaurantes del barco.

Una chochera para compartir con usted. Nos encon-tramos con estupendos vinos chilenos en la carta de los restaurantes junto a otros internacionales de gran cate-goría como el Shiraz australiano, los Sauvignon blanc de Nueva Zelandia, los Chianti de la Toscana y el Zinfandel californiano. Es imposible disimular cierto orgullo cuan-do nuestros compañeros de mesa alaban nuestros vinos y nos damos cuenta de que cada día más reconocen nuestras marcas y etiquetas.

I would like to share with you an unforgettable experience on the Azamara Journey, a boutique cruise, during a trip on the Baltic Sea. The obvious reason for this is to tempt you to take this trip, because I am deeply convinced that it will have the same impact on you as it did on my wife and me, as it quickly became one of the best trips we have been lucky enough to enjoy. Indeed, if you believe that the Nordic countries represent a remarkable balance in their social and political organization, along with a good dose of development, solidarity, innovation, design, and opportunity, then you will have the chance of confirming this belief and increasing your admiration for their people.

This cruise trip is well designed. Two days in Stockholm, Sweden; one day in Helsinki, Finland; two days in Saint Petersburg, Russia; one day in Tallinn, Estonia; and one day on the Swedish Island, Visby; ending with a two-day stop in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is certainly an intelligent and appropriate way of exploring the most attractive elements of Baltic culture. Elegance and simplicity, modernism and tradition, quality of living and a culture of citizenship—these cultural trademarks are present in every spot, outing and conversation. The changing of the guards at the Stockholm Royal Palace, the solemn nature of these royal guards, maritime environment, fine architecture, and hundreds of visits that take one from island to island increasingly cast their spell on us, cultivating our liking for this friendly Swedish capital. On the second day, when the Azamara Journey bids farewell to Stockholm, setting sail towards Helsinki at 2:00 p.m., our spirit is filled with the certainty that without a doubt we will return.

As I mentioned, the Azamara Journey is a boutique cruise ship. With about 700 rooms and suites, it is a ship built on a human scale, in which upon setting out, conversation flows in a natural and spontaneous way. We traveled with people from the United States, Canada, South Africa, Peru, France, Spain, and Italy, mostly our age, though younger people—good at going to nightclubs and musical performances, of which there were many and all very good—joined us as well. With great fondness I recall guitar player Victor Cruz, who accompanied our evening dinners, with whom we sang along to songs by The Beatles under the amused gaze of Mauricio and Victor, two Chilean professionals with vast experience and friendliness, our waiters at the ship’s restaurants.

A treat for our national pride, we found that excellent Chilean wines were part of the restaurant’s menu, along with other world-class international wines, such as Australian Shiraz, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Chianti from Tuscany, and Californian Zinfandel. It is impossible to hide a sense of pride when our fellow guests praise our wines and we realize that with every day that passes they are more familiar with our vineyards and wine labels.

Durante las horas de navegación hay muchas cosas variadas y entretenidas para hacer. En lo personal, quedé encantado con el nivel de las conferencias y tertulias sobre la situación de la Unión Europea y el futuro del euro, a cargo del coronel Vargas, un experi-mentado diplomático. Estas conversaciones se realizaban a la hora del té, mientras otros pasajeros disfrutaban de un muy completo spa, el circuito de trote al aire libre, las compras en las distintas tiendas del barco o la presentación de las excursiones en el próximo destino.

During the navigation hours there is a great variety of activities one can do. Personally, I was highly impressed by the intellectual level of the conferences and gatherings organized around the subject of the European Union and the future of the Euro, organized by Colonel Vargas, an experienced diplomat. These conversations took place at tea time, while other passengers enjoyed a very complete spa, an outdoor run, shopping at the different stores on the ship, or a presentation of the excursions that would take place at the next destination.

One distinctive trait of the Azamara Cruises is the longer stay at the places one visits, as well as the series of excursions that vary from classical to thematic for those who have special interests related to each of the ship’s destinations. By sharing impressions with the other passengers, one concludes that this is a valued element of the Azamara cruises.

Llegamos a Helsinki a las 8am con un día fabuloso de sol y con la contagiosa alegría de los finlandeses; sobre todo las mujeres en el mercado central, a pasos del puerto. Qué talento para ofrecer y vender sus artesanías, frutas, verduras, textiles y otras tentaciones varias.

Para los nórdicos la llegada del verano es definitivamente una fiesta y da mucho gusto ver a papás, abuelos, hijos y nietos, todos jun-tos en la Avenida Principal en torno a preciosos y cuidados jardines. La buena calidad de vida es un sello de la capital finlandesa, uno de los cinco países que ha duplicado su ingreso en una generación. San Petersburgo es impactante. Pocas ciudades en el mundo han nacido así, de la nada o más bien del sueño de un hombre en un lugar donde no había nada. La historia le debe a Pedro El Grande la inspiración de una ciudad ex-traordinaria de la cual se ha dicho y escrito tanto. En cualquier ranking de las más lindas ciudades europeas figura naturalmente San Petersburgo. Nosotros vivimos la experiencia de contratar una guía local en español, con solidos co-nocimientos de historia, arte y arquitectura, y con la experiencia de vida de la época comunista en su niñez y juventud, así como la transición actual en sus tiempos de abuela. Creemos que vale la pena recomendarle esta opción. Ludmila los estará esperando.

Fundada en 1154, Tallin, la capital de Estonia, es una de las ciudades más antiguas del Báltico. Ocupada en distintos momentos de su historia por suecos y daneses, y liberada de Rusia en 1991, es una ciudad que definitivamente vale la pena conocer aunque sea en el respiro de un día. Me fascinó su historia de li-beración a través de la música: la retirada de los tanques rusos al tiempo en que los estonios seguían cantando. Hoy, Estonia se destaca por exportar servicios de e-government a muchas de las ex republicas soviéticas. La caminata por el “old town” que mantiene sus características desde el siglo XV nos hace entender por qué se trata de una de las ciudades más atractivas de Europa.

We arrived in Helsinki at 8 a.m. on a fabulously sunny morning and instantly witnessed the infectious Finnish cheerfulness, especially of the women at the central market, just steps away from the port. What a talent for offering their crafts, fruit, vegetables, textiles, and other multiple temptations. For the Nordics, the arrival of the summer season is definitely a feast and it is a pleasure to see parents, grandparents, children, and grandchildren all at the main avenue enjoying the beautiful manicured gardens. A good standard of living is a trademark of the Finnish capital, one of five countries that doubled their income in just one generation. A visit to the Senate Square and the Lutheran Cathedral is a must.

Another one of the outstanding services of the Azamara Journey is the free bus system that every 40 minutes takes passengers into the city and vice versa. The ease, comfort and assurance of safe travel to each destination at one’s own rhythm, in addition to the certainty of counting on a final midnight bus to the five star hotel—the Azamara Journey—is simply invaluable. Also, the embracing and attentive “welcome home” offered by the ship’s reception area professionals adds an almost family-feeling welcome.

Saint Petersburg is quite impressive. Few cities in the world have come to exist in the same way—built from nothing, or rather, from one man’s dream for a place where there was absolutely nothing. History owes to Peter the Great the inspiration of one of Europe’s most extraordinary cities, about which so much has been said and written. In any ranking of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Saint Petersburg naturally appears. We enjoyed the experience of hiring a Spanish local guide who had comprehensive knowledge in history, art, and architecture. She had grown up in the Communist period throughout her entire childhood and adolescence, and later lived the transition into her current stage as a grandmother. In our opinion her guidance is an option that is highly recommendable. Ludmila will be there, waiting for you.

Founded in 1154, Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is one of the Baltic’s oldest cities. Occupied in different periods of its history by the Swedes and Danish, later to be freed by Russia in 1991, this is a city worth visiting even if just in the breadth of one day. The history of their liberation told through music is fascinating—and telling of the retreat of Russian tanks while Estonians sang songs of joy and victory. Today, Estonia stands out for its exportation of e-government services for many of the ex-Soviet Republics. A walk through their Old Town, which has maintained the same style ever since the 15th century, makes it easy for one to understand why it is one of the most appealing cities in Europe.

El grupo de fumadores teníamos nuestro espacio al aire libre en el sector del piso 10 cercano a la proa; allí compar-tíamos cotidianamente una veintena de pasajeros junto a un buen vino, una cerveza y un picoteo. Entre los cuentos memorables estaban los de una sudafricana que añoraba mudarse de Johannesburgo a Ciudad del Cabo, con la mira de terminar sus días junto al mar y la infaltable compañía de su cigarrillo y su copa de vino. Personaje de una gran simpatía que nos entregó muy buenos momentos.

Otro de los integrantes del grupo, en el sector fumadores, resultó ser un estadounidense alto, de contextura gruesa y una envidiable voz de barítono. En los primeros cinco días de navegación llegaba vestido informalmente con polera y pantalón corto. Al escucharlo hablar me lo imaginaba como un gran invitado en un programa de radio o televisión.

El personaje resulto ser Mac Frampton, pianista eximio y de gran trayectoria, integrante del exclusivo grupo de pia-nistas patrocinados por la casa Stein… que nos hizo vivir uno de los momentos más emocionantes e inesperados de este viaje. A las 3.30 pm, hora insólita, nos recibió Mac de riguroso esmoquin en el gran cabaret para ofrecernos una

The ship’s group of smokers had our own space in the open air on the 10th floor, near the ship’s bow, where about 20 passengers would share a glass of good wine, beer, and an appetizer. Among the most memorable stories were those from a South African woman who longed to move from Johannesburg to Cape Town, dreaming of spending her last days by the sea, amid the company of her cigarette and glass of wine. A person of great charm, she gave us many a moment of pleasure and enjoyment.

Another member of this smoking section group was a tall, husky North American who boasted an enviable baritone voice. The first five days of sailing he showed up informally dressed in a T-shirt and shorts. Listening to him made me think of a celebrity guest on a radio or television program. This character turned out to be Mac Frampton, a virtuoso pianist with a vast repertoire and a member of the exclusive group of pianists sponsored by Steinway & Sons. He made us live one of the most moving and unexpected moments of the journey. At 3:30 p.m., Mac welcomed us, dressed in an impeccable tuxedo, to the Great Cabaret Hall, and delighted us with a memorable

Finally, the magnificent Copenhagen, capital of Denmark—charming, flirtatious, elegant: the largest among 500 islands that form this widely admired country. The Danish have a good concept of themselves, their sense of humor, their past, present and future, as well as of their particularities, such as the hippie experiment Christiania, their constitutional monarchy, ruled by the same lineage for over 400 years. But what most impressed us was the quality and originality of their designs, their reasonable prices, and, curiously, their friendliness.

This is but a mere synopsis of the pleasant moments lived aboard the Azamara Journey. I truly hope it is motivation for you to venture and travel outside of the common itineraries on this cruise ship, where you will surely discover the best of grand Baltic culture.

Whether for its people, the endemic species or the tasty and plentiful food, the archipelago and the capital of this South American gem exude reasons for visiting them. And to be amazed both in the city and out at sea.

Pocas veces un lugar común resulta tan im-pactante como en Galápagos. Cualquier tu-rista sabe que existen las tortugas gigantes, los piqueros de patas azules y lobos mari-

nos e iguanas por montones. Quién no ha visto re-gistro de toda la fauna del archipiélago en documen-tales de National Geographic y Discovery Channel; y quién no cree que es difícil sorprenderse con algo en la adultez. Pero basta con pisar Baltra, la isla en la que se aterriza al salir desde Guayaquil, para elimi-nar cualquier dejo de apatía. Y en sólo tres días, hasta el más lacónico de los visitantes vuelve al hotel co-mentando todo lo que vio y cómo llenó, nuevamente, la tarjeta de memoria de la cámara. Los locales sólo sonríen.

Ellos saben de memoria cómo funciona el destino para los extranjeros: Galápagos es un asunto de ex-pectativas. De los turistas por conocer lo que han visto en la televisión, y del lugar por que lo visiten. Y en ese constante tira y afloja, Baltra gana el primer punto. Un terreno seco y plano donde lo primero que recomiendan es hacer snorkeling, desorienta al tu-rista novato. Y enterarse en el bus camino a Puerto Ayora que el lugar fue una base americana durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, hace pensar en bombas antes que en lobos marinos y peces coloridos.

Una idea optimista es creer que el paisaje y la historia son parte de la estrategia del lugar: Galápagos quiere sorprender. Luego, de un momento a otro, hay que ba-jarse del bus para cruzar en lancha el Canal de Itabaca, con destino a la isla de Santa Cruz. Y en ese momento, lo entiendes: las islas funcionan por planos, con ecosiste-mas tan distintos entre sí que parecen lugares geográfi-camente opuestos. Desierto y selva, en Galápagos, están a 40 minutos de distancia. Un ejemplo de esto es la isla de Santa Bárbara, con siete zonas de vegetación distin-tas y con un 70 por ciento de flora endémica en las áreas más secas.

Rarely a commonplace is as shocking as it is in Galapagos. Any tourist knows about the giant tortoises, the blue-footed boobies and that sea lions and iguanas galore. Who hasn’t seen the archipelago’s wildlife in National Geographic and Discovery Channel documentaries; who doesn’t think it’s hard to be surprised by something in the adulthood. But just a step on Baltra Island, where you land on exit from Guayaquil, is enough to eliminate any hint of apathy. And in just three days, even the most laconic visitor goes back to the hotel every evening talking about all the things he saw and how filled, again, the memory card from his camera. Locals only smile.They know by heart how it goes for foreigners: Galapagos is a matter of expectations. From the tourists to know what they’ve seen on television, and from the place to be visited. And in that constant tug of war, Baltra wins the first point. A dry, flat terrain where the first thing they recommend to do is snorkeling, disorients any rookie tourist. And to learn on the bus ride to Puerto Ayora that the place was an American military base during World War II, brings to mind bombs rather than sea lions and colorful fish.An optimistic point of view is to believe that both the landscape and its history are part of the place’s strategy: Galapagos wants to surprise you. Then, suddenly, you have to get off the bus to cross the Itabaca Canal by boat, bound for the island of Santa Cruz. And then, you get it: the islands work in layers, each one with different ecosystems that seem geographically opposite. Desert and jungle, in Galapagos, are only 40 minutes away. An example of this is the island of Santa Barbara, with seven different vegetation zones and 70% of endemic flora in the drier areas.Only minutes after seeing such landscapes, while crossing the canal, it’s impossible to portray the surroundings in any other media than the memory: the pictures do not perceive the three tones of the water, or the calm that these colors, as relaxing and tempting as they are, produce.The first thing that’s understood when you reach your destination –which can be Isabela, Santa Cruz or Fernandina, the most popular islands for travelers-, is that you’re a just a tourist and that the owners of the island are the animals. The crabs that pop off when walking among the rocks; the birds that fly over any outdoor lunch –what sense does to miss the terraces with a climate that’s always ideal-; iguanas nesting in specific areas of the beaches and the sea lions that, for their abundance, seem to do all kinds of crafts in the islands: they appear on the docks, the terraces, at the entrance of snorkeling areas and in the place agreed with the driver as the bus stop.

Sólo minutos después de ver ese tipo de paisajes, se cruza en lancha un mar imposible de retratar en otro soporte que no sea la memoria: las fotografías no perciben los tres tonos del agua, ni la calma que pro-ducen esos colores tan relajantes como tentadores.

Lo primero que se entiende al llegar a destino –que puede ser Isabela, Santa Cruz o Fernandina, las islas más concurridas por los viajeros-, es que uno es tu-rista y que los dueños de la isla son los animales. Los cangrejos que casi saltan cuando caminan entre las rocas, los pájaros que sobrevuelan cualquier almuer-zo al aire libre –qué sentido tiene desaprovechar las terrazas con un clima siempre preciso-, las iguanas que anidan en sectores específicos de las playas y los lobos marinos que, por su abundancia, pareciera que hacen todo tipo de oficios: aparecen en los muelles, las terrazas, en la entrada de los sectores de buceo y en el lugar acordado con el conductor como parada de autobús.

Esto se hace aún más evidente al recorrer Tintore-ras, un islote a minutos de Santa Cruz que acoge a to-das las especies antes mencionadas, a los pingüinos endémicos del archipiélago, a los piqueros de patas azules (los de patas rojas ya casi no se ven) y, en el comienzo del recorrido, a los tiburones que, a pesar de que duermen de día –y por eso no se ve mucho de ellos-, es posible encontrar ocasionalmente si se hace snorkeling en el sector. Por apenas US$25 dó-lares por persona –que incluyen el valor del viaje en lancha y el guía a bordo-, se puede explorar la inmen-sidad del mar con una careta y un tubo como únicos requisitos.

Aunque toparse con un tiburón es algo excepcio-nal, sí hay que estar preparado para interactuar con tortugas y lobos marinos: ante éstos hay que aletear y moverse libremente; de lo contrario, pueden con-fundirlo a uno con carnada. Con las tortugas, por el contrario, hay que bajar un par de cambios y ser como ellas: etéreas, calmas, disfrutando todo lo que dura cada impulso con que se desplazan. Si no se les

This becomes even more evident while walking through Tintoreras, a small island just minutes from Santa Cruz that embraces all the aforementioned species, endemic penguins, the blue-footed boobies (the red-footed ones and barely visible) and, in the beginning of the route, sharks. Whom, despite the fact that they sleep at daytime –which is why you do not see much of them-, it’s possible to occasionally find out at sea while snorkeling. For just US$ 25 each, including the price of the boat trip and the guide aboard, you can explore the vastness of the sea with a mask and snorkel as single requirements.Although meeting a shark is something exceptional, you do have to be prepared to interact with turtles and sea lions: before the latter, you have to flap and move freely; otherwise, they can confuse you with bait. With turtles, however, you have to slow down to their pace and be like them: ethereal, calm, enjoying each impulse as long as it lasts. If you don’t scare them, you can swim beside, behind or above them until exhaustion or the desire to look for a sea lion to win. The only hurry in Galapagos is, eventually, reaching Baltra to fly back to the mainland. Though “accidentally” missing your flight doesn’t seem a bad idea while swimming among these species.For the less adventurous, you can go snorkeling in Concha Perla, an area in Isabela surrounded by rocks and accessible only at low tide. In the absence of giant tortoises, there is a concentration of corals and colorful fish, including the puffer fish. Reaching any of these places is easy: hotels like the Red Mangrove –present in Isabela, Santa Cruz and Floreana islands- coordinate shipments with local guides and equipment rentals, while you do the inevitable: take pictures the whole time. It is better to accept this from the beginning and not bother on turning off or putting away the camera, because this is how it works in Galapagos: anecdotes worth shooting occur constantly –that is, anecdotes for the tourists, since the locals see them as every-day scenes. Also, being surrounded by beaches, the question of whether you already photographed the colorful water perfectly persists.Back to the mainlandLeaving that slow-motion lifestyle back and exchange it for Quito’s hustle is precisely one of Ecuador’s strengths. Defining the capital as the starting point is a plus: being a small country, with an area of about 284,000 km2, every corner is reachable within a range from 30 minutes to four hours. Coast, mountains, jungle and metropolis have never been so close.

El único apuro en Galápagos es, eventualmente, llegar a Baltra para empren-der el regreso al continente. Aunque nadando junto a estas espe-cies, perder el vuelo no parece una mala idea.

Para los menos avezados, se puede hacer snorkeling en Concha Per-la, un sector en Isabela cercado por rocas y accesible sólo cuando baja la marea. A falta de tortugas gigantes, hay una concentración de corales y peces multicolores, incluido el pez globo. Llegar a cual-quiera de estos lugares es fácil: hoteles como los de la cadena Red Mangrove –presentes en las islas Isabela, Santa Cruz y Floreana- coordinan con guías locales los traslados y el arriendo del equipo, mientras uno hace lo inevitable: sacar fotos a cada rato. Es mejor asumir esto desde un comienzo y no molestarse en guardar ni apa-gar la cámara, porque así funciona en Galápagos: constantemente ocurren anécdotas –para uno; para los locales son cotidianeidades- que vale la pena retratar. Y, rodeado de playas, la duda de si ya se fotografió la perfección del agua es constante.

De vuelta al continente

Dejar ese estilo de vida en slow motion atrás y cambiarlo por el aje-treo quiteño es, precisamente uno de los encantos de Ecuador. Defi-nir la capital como punto de partida tiene un plus: al ser un país pe-queño, con una superficie de casi 284.000 km2, se llega a todo tipo de destinos en un rango de entre 30 minutos y cuatro horas. Costa, sierra, metrópoli y selva nunca han estado tan cerca.

Lo que no cambia con el paisaje, es la cordialidad de los locales: el trasfondo colonial les pesa y la educación y la formalidad están en el ADN de los ecuatorianos. Además del clásico “¿mande?” cuando alguien los interpela, tienen una manera de ofrecerlo todo que, al principio, suena a sugerencia. Las primeras veces que uno escucha, por ejemplo, “¿Sí se sirve un café, un refresco o un juguito?” se omi-ten los signos de interrogación, y se asume que después vendrá una recomendación. Tipo “hay varios disponibles en el frigobar” o “pre-fiera tal lugar en vez de tal otro”. Pero no. El silencio del otro implica la espera de una respuesta, y ahí uno entiende que su costumbre es ofrecerle lo que sea a quien llegue, dando por hecho que el otro está esperando algo. Y nadie querría herir susceptibilidades.

What does not change with the landscape, is the friendliness of the locals: the colonial background weighs on them, and a very formal politeness is rooted in the Ecuadorians’ DNA. Besides the classical “mande?” when someone talks to them, they have a way to offer anything that, at first, sounds like a suggestion. The first few times you hear, for example, “¿Sí se sirve un café, un refresco o un juguito?”, asking if you want some coffee, a soft drink or juice, you silence the question marks and assume that a recommendation is yet to come. Like “there are several available in the minibar” or “go to this place rather than this other one”. But no. The person’s silence implies the he or she is waiting for an answer, and only then you understand that they’re used to offer anything to whoever arrives, assuming that the other person is expecting it. And nobody would want to hurt any feelings.The same goes for food: Ecuador fattens, but it was never so worth it nor it mattered so little. Whether in luxury restaurants or street stalls, fried food abounds –and rejecting it is not a choice. Between the buns, the cassava and the fried plantains –made with green bananas-, along with the ceviche and an almost infinite variety of fish, is hard to resist and impossible not to overeat.After tasting the local flavors and touring the historical downtown Quito, the ideal place for an evening walk is Plaza Foch. Conceived as the neighborhood of art and design, and a modern local cuisine that keeps up with its spirit, Plaza Foch –originally called Plaza El Quinde- is the clearest contrast to Galapagos: Wireless internet versus disconnection; beats on speakers instead of the silence of the sea; cutting-edge design instead of the rustic Red Mangrove style; and modern cuisine rather than a very –very, very- fresh fish, taken right out of the sea.As Ecuadorians don’t know year-round seasons –they only have dry and rainy seasons-, the climate is predictable. Rather, the changes are. From May to October, the temperature is never lower than 10°C, nor exceeds 25°C. But there is always the possibility of rain. With drops as thick as any winter rain you can remember, except for the fact that you are wearing shorts and sandals, not boots and a coat. Therefore, a raincoat is always useful in the backpack –to then forget it. Because just like you weren’t in Galapagos unless you swam with sea lions and turtles, you weren’t in Quito if you didn’t get soaked by surprise.

Lo mismo ocurre con la comida: Ecuador engorda, pero nunca valió tanto la pena ni importó tan poco. Ya sea en los restoranes de lujo o en los puestos calleje-ros, las frituras abundan y cuesta rechazarlas. Entre los bollos, la yuca y los patacones –hechos con plá-tano verde-, sumados al ceviche y una variedad casi infinita de pescados, es difícil resistirse e imposible no comer hasta hartarse.

Luego de probar los sabores ecuatorianos y recorrer el casco histórico de Quito, lo ideal para pasar la tar-de es caminar por Plaza Foch. Concebido como el ba-rrio del arte y el diseño –y una línea moderna de la gastronomía local, acorde con el sector-, Plaza Foch –originalmente llamada Plaza El Quinde- es el más claro contraste con Galápagos: wi-fi versus desco-nexión, beats en altoparlantes en vez del silencio del mar, diseño de vanguardia a cambio del estilo rústico del Red Mangrove, y cocina de autor en vez de un pes-cado recién, literalmente recién, sacado del mar.

Como los ecuatorianos no saben de estaciones –sólo existen las temporadas seca y lluviosa-, el clima es predecible. Más bien, lo son los cambios. De mayo a octubre, la temperatura nunca bajará de los 10 gra-dos, ni superará los 25°. Pero siempre existe la posibi-lidad de que llueva. Intensa y brevemente. Con gotas tan gruesas como las de cualquier lluvia de invierno que uno recuerde, salvo porque se reciben con shorts y sandalias, no botas y abrigo. Por eso, una capa im-permeable no está de más en la mochila –para des-pués olvidarla. Porque así como no se estuvo en Ga-lápagos si no se nadó con lobos marinos y tortugas, no se estuvo en Quito si a uno no lo empapó la lluvia de sorpresa.

With a new concept that includes the organization of events and meetings, this venue is often brimming with people, especially on Saturdays. Among its upcoming projects is not only boosting the venue itself, but also the entire Barrio Italia. The idea is to bring tourists to visit places that offer such exclusive flavors as this: the house specialty is a cappuccino accompanied by wholewheat toast and farm-raised scrambled eggs, a delicacy brought exclusively from Candelaria to your plate.

El café del patioIrene León creó el Patio Italia en noviembre del 2011. Un pequeño boulevard boutique en el número 1624 de la avenida del mismo nombre, que da la posibilidad de tomar una taza de café Abucaldi y vitrinear por las pequeñas tiendas del lugar, donde existen distintas propuestas de decoración, moda y muebles. A dicha oferta se suman constantemente eventos que reúnen una muestra de variedad gourmet con productos nativos de Chile. Degustación y cata de vino, cerveza, espumosos, café, té y chocolate. El restaurante Hawa (“cielo” en quechua) es otro inolvidable de este recién seleccionado “Mejor hotel de Sudamérica “por la co-munidad virtual de TripAdvisor. De la mano del chef Rafael Casin, el 80 por ciento de los vegetales provienen de su huerta, y se sirven con productos como el cuy y la quínoa, que junto a ingredientes de mar, se prueban en la ligereza de un espacio marcado por lámparas que flotan iluminando tenues como nubes de mimbre. Aledaño al restaurante Hawa, el río Vilcanota corre tranquilo por la fecha en que me encuentro (mediados de octubre), disimulando el arranque que hace dos años -en enero- destruyó con un caudal de furia parte de las líneas férreas. Usualmente, tomar el tren des-de el hotel hasta Machu Picchu, o más bien hasta el pie de la “mon-taña vieja” (Machu Picchu en quechua), es una excelente manera de admirar el esplendor de los paisajes de Ollantaytambo, pasando en la trayecto de lo seco hasta lo frondoso de la selva, que alberga el monumento inca.

Near the Hawa restaurant, the Vilcanota River ran softly by the time I was there (mid-October) hiding the strength that two years before swept away the railroads connecting to Aguas Calientes. Being that a rare event, taking the train from Tambo del Inka and making way to Machu Picchu is a fantastic option to admire the splendor of Ollantaytambo, on a road that goes from dry to wet and leafy, as one approaches the “old mountain” -the Quechua meaning for Machu Picchu.

Es la madrugada del 25 de diciembre y Papá Noel, el más famoso repartidor de regalos, se desplaza con su abrigo rojo y en trineo mientras que nosotros, y usted, con maletas le seguimos. Acá su recorrido de 24 horas por algunas ciudades desde la zona pacífica hacia el oeste del continente.

It is the dawn of December 25th and Santa Claus, the most famous gift giver of all, is traveling around the world in his red coat with white trim, while we, and you, follow him around with our suitcases. Here, his 24-hour journey is tracked—through some cities from the Pacific zone to the west of the continent.

¿Cuántos de nosotros esperamos con ansias regalos en la chimenea cada 25 de diciem-bre? En aquel entonces cuando descubrir el paradero de Santa ameritaba una hábil

estrategia para saber a qué hora estaría pasando por nuestra casa. Felizmente esto cambió gracias a NORAD, la orga-nización encargada de vigilar los cielos de América del Norte y que, además, sigue el vuelo de Papá Noel a través de radares, satélites y cámaras fotográfi-cas. Fue así como nació la idea de que cada 25 de diciembre se monitoreara el trayecto de Santa, amainando la tormentosa ansiedad de los chicos. Con el pasar del tiempo fue ganando tanta popu-laridad que hoy gracias a Google Maps y Google Earth es posible seguir la ruta de este viajero en tiempo real, a través también de distintas redes sociales, que hicieron que el 2011 el sitio web www.noradsanta.org tuviera visitas históricas.

How many of us anxiously waited for presents at the fireplace every December 25th? In those days discovering Santa’s location was worth skillful strategies to find out what time he would stop by one’s house. Happily, this changed thanks to NORAD, the organization in charge of watching the skies of North America and also following Santa´s flight with radars, satellites and cameras. The tradition began when the company Sears Roebuck & Co. from Colorado Springs published an announcement in which they invited all children to call Santa Claus. However, the number published was accidentally the direct line to NORAD’s Commander in Chief.And this is how the idea came about that every December 25th, Santa’s trajectory would be followed, thus appeasing children’s agonizing anxiety. Every year in January, one of the world’s most unusual hotels opens its doors: the Hotel de Glace in Quebec, an impressive structure built with tons of snow and ice that each season offers a true Nordic experience.

You don’t need to stay in it to get to know it: Visitors can tour their facilities for the day and enjoy a cocktail on the rocks at the ice bar. The only requirement is to be kept warm, as the temperature varies between -3 and -5 °C.The hotel was built in a record time of five weeks, and it surprises with its huge snow vaults, majestic chandeliers and ice sculptures; its delicately carved columns and luxurious rooms –some with fireplace and spa. It’s an ephemeral artwork designed by architects, sculptors and snow lovers, and built with techniques of blow molding and mold removals.

One night in this hotel is an extreme and unique experience. The rooms and beds are made of ice, but have sleeping bags and blankets made especially for arctic climates. Before going to bed, it’s recommended to warm up in the spa under the stars.

MUSEO PAULISTANOÉste es su nombre oficial, pero si pregunta por Museo de Ipiranga, de seguro será más fácil que le cuenten de él. El edificio que aloja este histórico museo data del año 1895, y guarda importantes documentos que fueron par-te de la independencia de Brasil y que ayudan a enten-der su sociedad –en especial a la ciudad de Sao Paulo. Además, la edificación del museo es uno de los lugares más atractivos de la urbe, gracias a su privilegiada ubi-cación en un parque con jardines inspirados en el Pala-cio de Versalles.

En su interior acoge importantes reliquias de la épo-ca colonial brasileña, como cuadros, armas, muebles y muchas fotografías de sus antecesores. Una de las obras más importantes es la pintura “Independencia o muer-te”, del artista Pedro Américo, del año 1888.

Paulistano MuseumIts official name is Paulistano Museum, but if you ask about the Ipiranga Museum, it will surely be easier to get informa-tion about it. The building that hosts this historic museum was built in 1895, and it keeps important documents that were part of Brazil’s independence, which help to understand its society—especially that of Sao Paulo. Also, the museum’s building is one of the most beautiful places in the city, thanks to its privileged location in a park with gardens inspired by the Palace of Versailles.

Inside it holds important relics from Brazilian colonial times, such as paintings, weapons, furniture, and many photographs of its ancestors. One of the most important works is the painting “Independence or Death” (1888) by ar-tist Pedro Américo.

MUSEO DEL FÚTBOLEn el país del fútbol donde sus “jogadores” son considerados semidioses, no podía fal-tar un museo que repasara toda la historia del deporte más popular en Brasil. Por eso, el año 2008 se inauguró bajo las graderías del estadio de Pacaembú una muestra dedicada a la pasión del fútbol.

El moderno recinto cuenta con cuatro salas, en las cuales es posible aprender todo lo ligado a este deporte: desde sus orígenes hasta la función de los árbitros, copas del mundo, tipo de balones y, por supuesto, ho-menajear a sus grandes ídolos nacionales. Además, en algunas de sus murallas se pro-yectan cantos, gritos y encuentros de fútbol que dan la sensación de estar en medio de la barra y ser parte de la euforia de un par-tido. Sin embargo, no todo es alegría, pues en una de sus salas se recuerda el momento más triste de la historia del fútbol brasileño: cuando, en la final de la Copa del Mundo de 1950, la “verdeamarela” perdió en el estadio del Maracaná contra Uruguay.

EMBU DAS ARTESSao Paulo y Embu das Artes son dos mundos opuestos que viven a escasos 40 kilómetros. Mientras en la capital paulista sus enormes e incontables edificios invaden la ciudad, Embu guardó intacto su pa-sado colonial, sus escalas cromáticas y su arte esparcido por todos los rincones. Esto, sumado a la influencia que, desde 1960, aportaron los muchos inmigrantes latinos, como peruanos, chilenos y argentinos.

En esa frondosa ciudad es posible encontrar gran parte de la artesanía de Brasil, como sus populares gallinas del nordeste y las “namoradeiras” (esa mujer negra que está con una mano apoya-da en su cara mirando desde una ventana). Pero Embu es más que arte… también tiene importantes iglesias, museos y restaurantes calcados a los europeos, como otros más populares donde se ento-nan todos los cánticos de la música popular brasileña. Por eso, bien vale la pena darle un día completo y perderse entre sus pintorescas ferias y talleres artísticos.

Para llegar, hay que tomar buses interurbanos con el letrero de “Embu Centro” desde la estación Lila de la línea 5 del metro.

Con el furor y la expectación causada por una hilera de autos de Fórmula Panam GP estacionados a las puertas del hotel Ritz en Santiago, se ofició una conferencia de prensa con medios nacionales e internacionales para dar luz verde a la realización del segundo campeonato FIA NACAM Panam GP Series, avalado por Ferrari Drivers Academy, la fecha de clausura del campeonato se realizará en el nuevo circuito de Codegua, VI Región. En su temporada 2012, el campeonato cerró con broche de oro siendo vencedor de la valida 13 (pendiente de Venezuela) el Ecuatoriano Sebastián Merchán, sumando su quinta victoria de la temporada. En el Gran Premio de Chile, el triunfo se quedó en manos del chileno Jorge Bas, quien logró un fin de semana perfecto con la pole y victoria.
