Kayak among whales, make expedition landings on the shores where walrus reside, and go for a hike in the polar bear’s backyard. Circumnavigating the Realm of the Polar Bears takes you right into the spectacular scenery and action of the largest Arctic wilderness in Europe. Well above the 80th parallel and closer than 600 nautical miles from the Geographic North Pole, you will discover the most barren and characteristically High Arctic than any other place we visit with MS Fram.
DAY 1 – 2: OSLO/LONGYEARBYENGo sightseeing before embarkingYour Arctic adventure starts with an evening f light from Oslo to Long yearbyen. Longyearbyen has all the amenities of a small, modern town and is situated in a stunning Arctic landscape. After your overnight stay in a hotel you will join an exciting sightseeing tour before embarking MS Fram.
DAY 3 – 4: NORTH WEST SPITSBERGEN NATIONAL PARKTraverse a glacier and discover the cultural treasures from early settlementsKongsfjord and its surroundings are known to be one of the most beautiful fjord areas in Spitsbergen. At the head of the fjord, mighty glaciers calve into the sea, framed by characteristic mountain formations. As we sail far ther nor thwest we reach Krossfjord and Mitrahalvøya, where we’ll see cultural remains from the whaling period, beautiful alpine flora, bird cliffs, and
often Svalbard reindeer. You may even want to try traversing a glacier with our Expedition Team. Then we visit the former mining settlement of Ny-Ålesund, an international center for research with a picturesque mix of old and new buildings. The North West Corner of Spitsbergen offers the largest concentration of graves, blubber ovens, and other cultural treasures dating back to the first era of the exploitation of Svalbard’s natural resources. In Raudfjord there are plenty of opportunities for great hikes. Hamiltonbukta is too shallow to navigate into, but it’s the perfect playground for explorers with a kayak. We will also see the enormous Monaco Glacier situated in Liefdefjord.
DAY 5 – 7: EASTERN SVALBARD NATURE RESERVES AND SOUTH SPITSBERGEN NATIONAL PARKMeet a hunting polar bear and visit the scene of a famous whalers’ battle In Eastern Svalbard the density of polar
bears is higher than other areas of Svalbard – we really hope to see one on this journey! In Sorgfjord a famous battle between whalers took place in the late 17th century. The eastern shores of the fjord are within North East Svalbard Nature Reserve. Alkefjellet is a spectacular bird cliff and one of the largest of its kind in Svalbard. You will have great views of it from the deck. Edgøya is the third-largest island in the Svalbard Archipelago. On its western shores the landscape is largely un-glaciated, unlike most other places on the east side of Spitsbergen. Kapp Lee is a wonderful site where you will find cultural heritage from all eras of human exploration of Svalbard. We continue to the South Cape Land – the southernmost tip of Spitsbergen. Hornsund displays large variations in landscape and geology over short distances. The currents push the drifting ice into the fjord early in the season, which attracts polar bears that hunt on the ice.

DAY 8: ISFJORDEnjoy your most exotic barbecue everIsfjord is the most prominent fjord system in Svalbard. We will spend the day exploring the outer and the inner parts. Later on we’ll find a scenic fjord arm and have a farewell barbecue in the most beautiful Arctic surroundings.
DAY 9: LONGYEARBYEN/OSLOBring back your memories created for sharingYour voyage ends in Longyearbyen. You may have the feeling of time having passed faster than you expected, however, you will take home memories of awesome experiences: The calving glacier front or the buzzing birdlife – or simply the subtle, odd feeling of having spent time on top of the globe, just a few hundred miles from the Geographic North Pole. An early morning transfer brings you to the airport for your flight back to Oslo.
