A Total Approach for Treating Neck & Scapular DisordersPractical Techniques for Assessment, Manual Therapy, & Exercise

Restoring Functional Movement PatternsInjuries in the neck and shoulder region affect over 1/3 of the adult population, and they can be very disabling and costly to the patient. X-ray findings often do not correlate with symptoms, yet these patients continue to have pain. Also, impairments in the scapula-thoracic and lumbar regions have been shown to affect the alignment and biomechanics of the cervical spine. Whether the cause is from a traumatic injury, or from the chronic effects of age, posture, and wear-and-tear, many of these patients suffer with significant pain and disability. Muscle imbalances and altered length-tension relationships of soft tissues make it increasingly more difficult to effectively treat these patients. Passive treatment approaches simply are not effective.

This one-day, intermediate-level course will explore the latest techniques for assessing and treating neck and shoulder girdle pain and dysfunction. Current treatment-based classification systems for neck patients will be presented, as well as today’s best-practices for objectively determining the underlying causes of dysfunction and applying effective treatment strategies.

Additionally, this course includes extensive, hands-on lab and demonstration sessions to allow participants to practice treatment techniques and exercise progressions. PNF techniques, as well as Pilates principles will be used to improve functional movement patterns. Clinical pearls with in-expensive, readily-available clinical supplies and equipment will also be shared, including specialized taping and neuromuscular re-education techniques for addressing common substitution patterns. Participants will learn new tools and techniques that can be implemented into their clinical practice the very next day.

Course DirectorSUE FLESHMAN-DUPONT, MS, MBA, PT, ATC, LAT, is a specialist in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine, with over 25 years of experience treating patients and athletes of all age groups and activity levels. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science/Athletic Training from Penn State University, and she earned her Master of Science degree in Biology (specializing in Biomechanics) from Bucknell University. Ms. Fleshman-Dupont received her degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Central Florida. In 2009, she earned her MBA in Healthcare Management and is currently putting that knowledge to work building successful rehab programs and services.

Ms. Fleshman-Dupont was selected for the Medical Staff at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics and was awarded a one-year fellowship at the USOC Training Center in Colorado Springs. She has also worked with the WTA Tour professional tennis players association, and various other professional and elite athletes, including World Cup figure skating, soccer, wrestling, and boxing events, U.S. volleyball and tae kwon do teams, and multiple long-distance events. She has performed extensive research on the knee, spine, Isokinetics and balance. While working at the USOC, she researched and developed a clinical Plyometrics protocol, which was presented at the APTA national conference. She has also contributed to several published articles on sports medicine and orthopedic-related topics. She has also presented at the national Rehab Summit on spine-related topics.

Currently, Sue is the Director of Rehab at St. Cloud Regional Medical Center in St. Cloud, FL. In addition to her management and patient care responsibilities, Ms. Fleshman-Dupont is also a guest lecturer for several PTA programs, community and senior centers. She serves as a sports medicine consultant and guest lecturer for multiple sports and charity event groups, including Team in Training and USA Fit Marathon training. She is an accomplished athlete herself, having completed 11 marathons, 6 Half Ironman triathlons, and also received her Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
