Numeracy Teaching
We will use the ‘learning journey’ steps to identify what pupils need to learn next. We will be using Abacus planning for resources and ideas. Each Numeracy lesson children will ‘have a go’ first and this will help them to self-assess. The teacher act as a facilitator. The teachers name the work not the group: Getting going, Ready to rock, Jet setters. Workshops are then lead by the teaching assistant or teacher creating strategy posters of how to succeed with the learning. Maths experts are children that lead or they will use a show me app which demo’s how to be successful. Children then apply their learning.
Numeracy content:
Number and place valueAddition and subtraction introducing formal methodsMultiplication and divisionFractionsMeasurementGeometry and shapeStatisitcs
Literacy Content:Word Level:Phonics and SpellingsWord RecognitionVocabulary extensionHandwriting
Sentence Level:Grammatical awarenessSentence construction and Punctuation
Text Level:Fiction and PoetryNon-Fiction
Including reading comprehension and writing composition
Literacy Content:Our Literacy teaching is centred around the Pie Corbett story telling approach. The children will learn texts off by heart including The Madron Tree, Dogger and Jack and the Giant
This includes talk for writing, innovating and inventing stories.Non fiction writing is then linked to this- including posters, instructions, reports and recounts.
Read, Write IncPhonics is a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with symbols in an alphabetic writing system.Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 4 to 8 year-olds learning to read and write. It is a fun, engaging and systematic way of teaching your child phonics and how to read. This session will be daily in groups appropriate to your child’s next step. This will include learning sounds, blending sounds to read words, reading a book with their partner and comprehension tasks.
Children not involved in the RWI session will be involved in SPAG lessons to practise handwriting, spellings and sentence construction.
How we plan:●Long term planning-this provides an overview of the year.●Medium term planning-provides us with a half term view.●Short term planning-is a weekly view of the lessons.
We follow the New National Curriculum when planning our teaching and learning.
The planning is based on previous assessment and attainment which helps to inform planning to meet the needs of all children.
Target Setting:●All children will be having their own personalised
targets- for Maths, Writing, Reading.●These are to help the children move forward with their learning and are tailored according to their personalised
next steps.●These also help the children take ownership of their own learning.
Please take time to look at your child’s targets and help them practice at home too.
Levels and new assessment system:
As you may be aware the New Curriculum was introduced in September 2014 and there is now an increased expectation on our children. Alongside this the old national curriculum levels of 1c, 1b, 1a, 2c, 2b etc no longer exist and don’t match the new national curriculum.
All schools have to set up their own way of assessing pupils attainment and progress. At St Piran’s Cross Trust we have worked with Mr Powers from Trevithick and we will be tracking pupils through ‘Steps.’
Each child will have their own learning journey which they will take
through their primary school education.
• Your child will be transferred from the previous system onto the appropriate ‘steps’.
Assessment:●Teacher assessments are gathered through out the academic year-based on professional judgment and using the appropriate criteria.●These are supported from the data collected from the formal SATs/tests. ●Pupils and teachers will constantly assess whether they have achieved a lesson learning objective or step in their learning journal.●All of this data is then logged onto our pupil tracking system which helps us to set targets and monitor each child’s progress accurately and effectively offering the correct support and guidance.
How you can help!
The importance of parental support and help cannot be stressed enough.
Your children want to please you so help them in doing so!
Prompt start, early nights! This is important for both children and staff!
How to help with Maths:
●Number work-help children to practice reading and writing numbers to 1000, focusing on accurate number formation.●Fractions and division to share items●Sums to work out mentally.●Money and word problems when you are at the
supermarket.●Telling the time and use of measurements in practical
situations at home●Times tables
How to help with reading and spellings:
●Read at home every day and write in the diary. They will be rewarded for this and the children will see the benefits. Share stories, newspapers, comics with your child. Practice on teach your monster to read: http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/
Focus on asking questions about what your child has read. Books will be changed on a regular basis.●Spellings. Learn and practice. Spelling competition on
Friday
How to help with writing and phonics:
● Practice learning the sounds with your child http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/sound-pronunciation-guide/●Practice accurate formation of sounds/spelling of key words.●Encourage them to write for different purposes e.g. Thank you letters●Practice joined up writing and encourage neat handwriting. Can they earn a pen license?
Homework:Homework will be set on Friday and will be expected to be completed
by the following Friday. Returned homework needs to be
placed in the finished work tray to be checked.
Team points will be awarded for completed homework.
Partnership-working together:
To do the very best for your children we must work together as a team.
Parents Evening and Open afternoons will be later this term. This will
give you the opportunity to look at their work and to discuss your
child’s progress.
Computing and ICTWithin school computing skills and technology
skills are important part of the curriculum and particularly to develop pupil’s learning
opportunities.
Have a look at our new school website to see what
your child has been learning- there will be photos
and work with children writing the blog for this.http://www.grampoundroadschool.co.uk/
