Mathematics Department 5122452551 Trends and Expectations of the Mathematics Education Profession Gail Burrill Program for Mathematics Education Michigan State University 5:00 – 6:00 pm in Derr 336 April 12, 2012 Abstract: The format of this presentation will be an informal conversation about what does it mean to be a Mathematics Educator. Discussion about how the Mathematics Education Profession has evolved in the past 20 years and how the expectations have changed as new policies and standards emerge. Gail Burrill, a Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics, was a secondary teacher and department chair in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin for over 25 years. She is currently a Mathematics Specialist in the Program for Mathematics Education at Michigan State University. She served as President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and as Director of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board. She codirects the Institute for Advanced Study’s International Seminar and the Secondary School Teachers Program component of the Park City Mathematics Institute. She is an instructor for Teachers Teaching with Technology and a senior mathematics advisor to Texas Instruments Education Technology. Her research interests are statistics education, the use of technology in teaching secondary mathematics, and issues related to what it means to teach mathematics.
