Future trends

Railway transport has various segments (from LRV, Metros, Commuter up to high

speed) and markets (from Amerika, Asia up to versatile areas in Europe), where

trends are developing differently under individual social and political conditions.

We would like to focus the following presentation on major aspects of the

Regional and Intercity traffic in central Europe on the basis of Double Deck trains.

Main questions are:

How to solve the increase of passengers ?

How to improve comfort level in new/existing trains ?

How to find economical solutions for different passenger capacity per train ?

How to improve boarding time on stations with maximum seat capacity ?

How to re-use or combine existing with new rolling stock generations ?

How to replace old national train protection systems with ERTMS ?

Due to

increase of mobility in the society,

long term increase of fuel cost and

attractive modern rolling stock

attractive time tables (one hour model)

increasing performance of new trains

more passengers are using the public

transport. The own car isn’t a status symbol

for young generation anymore

For example: an increase of only 2% p.a. in a 400-seats train will increase the

demand for seat capacity by 128 seats after 15 years, which is an additional car !

Modern rolling stock should consider the long term capacity increase and the

advantages of flexibility in the train design for Total Cost of Ownership TCO.

EMU from 2 to 8 cars

Loco hauled push-pull train

from 2 to 10 cars

Especially operators with larger fleets are requesting for standard vehicles to be used

in different segments (Regional and InterCity, short or long trains, different entrance

situation). TWINDEXX Vario with its single cars is providing these opportunities.

Modern trains can be either used as Loco hauled (D, E) or EMU depending on

operational needs. Flexibility in train length is a must.

Improvements of capacity and boarding time

Typical low floor entrance cars with 600 mm entrance height are providing a

level entrance (often 1,3 m wide). This car is the best solution for multifunctional

or handicapped areas due to direct / stepless access to the lower floor.

6

According to Prof. Weidmann (ETH Zürich) the boarding time can be improved with wider

doors and larger areas in the car behind the door (as a buffer area).

The high entrance car is not only providing a higher seat capacity per car,

but also a wider door (1,8 m) and increased area for standees behind

the door. Most of passengers wouldn’t mind the extra step.

Modern trains combine different solutions for all passengers based on

optimized boarding conditions at a maximum capacity.

Re-use of existing fleet

Many operators with existing fleet (mainly loco hauled trains) have the problem:

How to re-use the existing fleet under modern requirements ?

Due to new norms & standards, new requirements (multi traction) and increased safety

levels most of existing conventional train control systems will be obsolete.

Bombardier has developed the TWINDEXX Vario with 2 train control lines on board:

1. Conventional push-pull control ZWS/FMZ to operate the train in mixed configurations

with existing locos or cars. Limited double traction is possible.

2. New train control based on modern TCMS system with WTB in new cars. Loco can be

replaced by 1-2 driven cab cars and built up an EMU. Flexible multi-traction is possible.

7

Modern trains can operate with existing cars based on mixed configurations

Bicycles

10

The increasing mobility of especially young passengers with bicycles requires

different car layouts than in the past.

The multifunctional area of a low entrance car can be designed in new or

retrofitted into existing cars in different solution:

smaller areas in different cars or larger area in one car

with or without folding seats on the side

with or without handrails or special supporting elements

with or without internal doors

car layout

Introduction of ERMTS

ETCS is becoming real in many European countries within the next years.

Various trains incl. TWINDEXX Vario, TWINDEXX Express and TRAXX-locomotives

already equipped with ETCS (mainly SRS 2.3.0d).

Actual specification base Baseline 3.4.0 is released in 2015 (but already CR identified);

homologation expected for different trains in 2016-2018; Baseline 3.4.0 is a temporarily

step

Expected final version of Baseline 3.5.0 is part of the actual development road map

within Bombardier and can be offered as long as the specification is approved.

New TSI for CCS is in final discussion and expected to be approved by countries in 2015

It takes still a long time when all countries have switched over to ERTMS only (to save

conventional ATP systems) and needs long time for introduction of Level 3 (no antennas

in the track anymore), but new vehicles should be prepared for it.

11

Today:

Baseline 2 SRS 2.3.0d in realisation in different trains

2015:

Baseline 3 SRS 3.4.0 released and in tender process, realisation 2016-2018

2016:

Baseline 3 SRS 3.5.0 to be released

Modern trains must be equipped (or at least prepared) for ETCS Baseline 3.4.0
