Pleasanton Senior Center From The Pres By Bob Kehl Hello TVC Carvers, Carole and I currently are at our annual family reunion visit to Pismo Beach. We have been relaxing in pretty good weather down here compared to the considerable rain I hear the Bay area is getting. I love to be able to carve every day working on putting the scales on my Mermaid. November is a time of transition. The heat of summer is behind us; there is crispness to the evenings and mornings and we are seeing increasing cloudiness with the promise of rain. Even on the Central Coast of California, the leaves are changing colors. November is also a time to think back on what we are thankful for, as we enter the Thanksgiving season. Our club has a lot to be thankful for; family, friends, a very active club participating membership and another great year for our TVC club. We have had another successful show, this one celebrating 44 years. Our teaching programs at the local schools, the Fair, and demos have promoted wood carving for many kids and adults. The club’s membership is growing thanks to the excellent website ads and our various demos around the Tri Valley area. The contacts with the public have given us recognition as an active wood carving club promoting wood carving. The public contact and member’s participation at the weekly carving activities and camaraderie continue to increase our membership. It has been two years since our last election of officers, so in our November business meeting we will start the process of setting up nominations of the officers for the next 2 year term and election in January. Most of the present officers are willing to continue serving, if elected, but we always are willing to elect new folks that would like to serve. We will need a new Recording Secretary, as Joan Cousins is retiring from the position. We also need to fill the position of Advisor which is a required position of the CCG. All of the detailed job descriptions for the Officers are defined in the bylaws located on the TVC website. Remember that next month is our Tri Valley’s last event for the year, our Christmas party at the Brass Door on December 10 th from noon to about 3pm. See Paul Fackler’s article regarding the Christmas luncheon in this newsletter. We all have a fun time and great conversation. You can also sometimes pick up a fine “treasure” at our auction. I look forward to seeing all of you soon.

From The Pres By Bob Kehl

Hello TVC Carvers, Carole and I currently are at our annual family reunion visit to Pismo Beach.

Remember that next month is our Tri Valley’s last event for the year, our Christmas party at the Brass Door on December 10th from noon to about 3pm. See Paul Fackler’s article regarding the Christmas luncheon in this newsletter. We all have a fun time and great conversation. You can also sometimes pick up a fine “treasure” at our auction. Bulletin Board by Paul Fackler [:] Alviso Adobe Fall Festival: We had a great, if not exhaustive, three hours soap carving with over 70 very enthusiastic kids. Thanks to Rose, Ken, Rick, and Paul, the event went very smoothly. We also did a land office business in soap kits!! Yes, we are still recuperating! [:] Hagemann Ranch Open House: Once again, as Ken says, “We are a victim of our own success.” We have been requested to participate in the Hagemann Ranch Open House, 455 Olivina Ave, Livermore; on Sunday, Nov. 27, from 1:00-4:00. This is a demonstration carve. Those who have items for sale are welcome to do so. So far, nine people have “signed up.” If you would like to join us, please contact Paul at [email protected]. I need to know within the next couple weeks. [:] Christmas Luncheon, Saturday, Dec. 10: Our yearly get-together at the Brass Door, 2134 San Ramon Valley Blvd, in San Ramon, is all set. Lunch will be from 12:00-3:00. Again, the menu choice will be London Broil, Chicken Parmigiana, or Deep Fried Jumbo Prawns for $28.00 per person. Also, start looking for that perfect quality item, that someone would appreciate owning, to donate to our always enjoyable, and boisterous, Club Auction. Paul will be taking orders and collecting money at carving on Tuesdays or contact me at 925-462-1847 or [email protected] to place your order. [:] Fantastic New Carving Opportunity: If you’ve wanted to carve at the Center, and couldn’t make it during the day on Tuesdays, we have the solution. Thanks to Bob’s efforts, we can now offer a drop-in carving session at the Pleasanton Senior Center Wood Shop on Thursday evenings, 6:00-8:30, beginning on Nov. 10. Our goal is to give carvers, of all experience levels, a place to carve after work. [:] Gourds, Gourds, Gourds: If you would like to try your hand at gourd carving or burning, here is your opportunity. Joan Cousins has numerous gourds of great quality that she would love to share with our members. For more information, you may contact her at [email protected] [:] Joan Cousins Retiring: As of Jan. 2017 (and 16 yrs of service) Joan Cousins is retiring as Recording Secretary. It is now time for someone else to take over the Secretary’s job. The only duty this job requires is taking minutes at the monthly TVC meeting and transcribing them for the Newsletter. Everything else is done by Paul Fackler, the Corresponding Secretary. If you are interested, and would like to find out more about what her job entails, please contact Joan at [email protected] [:] Space Available: The space on the Bulletin Board page is also available to our members who would like to submit ideas or information of interest to the Club. Let me know what you have in mind at [email protected] .

CANE CARVING II

In segment two in this series on carving a wood spirit cane, I’ve branched out to a tutorial on how to carve a wood spirit knowing that these ideas are easily applied to a cane.

In my search I found this very comprehensive, step by step, tutorial that I think will be very helpful. Let’s start with the first 5 segments of the tutorial. The final 4 parts will be in December’s newsletter, along with a segment on doing a spirit face using a high speed rotary tool. Have fun!
