When late summer arrives, far toomany landscapes look a bit tired, tatty and worn out. This is espe-
cially true when the summer has been longand hot. By adding some very special lateblooming perennials, you can make an enor-mous difference to the whole look and feel ofyour late summer garden.
Perennials that bloom at this time of yearare like a breath of fresh air. When so manyother garden plants are on their way out, these perennials will look good while tolerat-ing intense late summer heat and droughtand occasional heavy rainfalls.
At the very top of my list of favouritesare the rudbeckias. This is their time toshine and to make a huge difference in ourgardens.
Perhaps one of the finest of all the peren-nial rudbeckias is the truly hardy variety,R. ‘Goldstrum’. Growing about two feet highwith deep golden petals surrounding a darkbrown button, ‘Goldstrum’ just keeps pour-ing out the colour well into November. If you
don’t have this variety yet, track it down atyour favourite plant store, and you’ll stillenjoy at least two months of colour. Twonew more compact varieties called, R. ‘CityGarden’ (18”) and R. ‘Gold Star’ (14”), will becoming out next year.
Recently, echinacea has been sold moreas a herb because of its healing properties, but it also has exquisite flowers. Echinaceapurpurea is the herbal variety, but pinkEchinacea ‘Magnum’ and the white flower-ing ‘White Swan’ are classy looking plantsthat add a unique quality to summer gar-dens. This year brings with it many newshorter and more vigourous varieties like‘Pow Wow’, ‘Wild Berry’, ‘Pink DoubleDelight’ and the rich orangey yellow tones of‘Summer Sun’.
In shady spots or in full sun, perhaps themost elegant of all the late summer peren-nials are the Japanese anemones. Dwarf ortall, white, pink or dusty rose, these plantsare a definite hit at this time of year. The yel-low centred anemone blossoms always havea fresh look, and they combine well withso many other perennials or shrubs. Thewhite varieties, especially, brighten up shadyareas.
For some early fall tones, add a bit of fireto your flower beds with crocosmias. Foryears they were called montebretia andsold as tiny bulbs, but today they are usu-ally sold in ‘bud and bloom’ as perennials.Crocosmias need a somewhat sheltered
spot, especially if we have another winterlike last year, and very well drained soil, butwow, do they every add spice to our gardenswith their fire-orange freesia-type blossoms.Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is an exceptional scarletred variety from Blooms in England, butdon’t ignore a RHS award winner, called‘Solfatare’, with its bronze leaves and puregold flowers, as well as the speckled, brilliantorange ‘Emily McKenzie’. There are a lotmore choices, such as the shorter red flower-ing ‘Little Redhead’.
Lush looking fall sedums are especiallyimportant at this time of year. The succu-lent foliage of ‘Autumn Joy’ and ‘Brilliant’certainly looks great all summer and never
stresses out in drought situations. As therosy pink blossoms open, they providerefreshing new colour for weeks. They com-bine well with low growing conifers or smallflowering shrubs like potentillas. As thepink flowers turn bronze, they should be lefton the plant for a charming dried fall look.Check out some of the new colours in foliageand flowers, such as the variegated whiteand green of S. ‘Autumn Charm’, the awardwinning soft pink ‘Matrona’ and ‘Emperor’with its deep purple foliage.
Heleniums have not exactly set the worldon fire the past few years, but they producemagnificent fall colours, very similar torudbeckias. Their small gold or gold/bronzepetals bloom well into autumn on eithercompact or tall varieties. They stand up wellin uncertain fall weather and provide a con-tinuous source of cut flowers. Take a look atthe Blooms’ introduction, ‘Mardi Gras’.
One of the real sleepers has been the‘Seduction’ series of achilleas in red, hotpink and yellow that reblooms all summer. They blend beautifully with so many annu-als, and they love the hot August sun.
These are some of my tried-and-true fa-vourites that add fresh new life to tired sum-mer gardens and make fall come alive. Don’tjust set them in your gardens, but rather, combine them with colourful conifers, broa-dleaved plants and evergreen perennials, like heucheras and euphorbias, for somespectacular displays.
