CROSSROADS APPROVES PART OF
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CURRICULUMCCA looks to hire full-time computer technician
coordinator, purchase more property
By Lauren FitchPioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS After its second public hearing on anew reproductive health curriculum, the CrossroadsCharter Academy Board of Education approvedon Thursday reproductive health text materials forseventh through 12th grade students.
The board also approved a survey to accompanythe reproductive health curriculum and acceptedthe definition of sexual activity as proposed by theReproductive Health Advisory Board.
Crossroads already has a health curriculumnd will use the same textbooks for middle schoolnd high school students that have been used for
he past couple years. After the advisory boardsapproval, teachers now will teach the chapters onreproductive health; approval for the chapter on
exually Transmitted Infections is pending.STIs are mentioned in other parts of the book
and we didnt realize there was a whole chapter onit, said Lynn Gullekson, superintendent. Its not somuch that there are any concerns, ... (the chapter)ust has to be reviewed by the advisory committee.
The Reproductive Health Advisory Board willcontinue to meet to discuss how to teach elementarystudents about HIV and AIDS, as required byMichigan law.
In other business, the board approved posting aposition for a full-time computer technician coordinator
to accommodate the districts increased installationof technology in its classrooms. Grand Valley StateUniversity, the charter schools authorizing body,recently donated 15 LCD projectors, which completesthe schools goal to have one in every classroom.
(A full-time computer technician coordinator) willallow us to make the best use of all of our technologythat we have been able to implement, Gulleksonsaid. In the last few years, we have increased laptoplabs, computers, LCD projectors and smart boards.We have a lot of cool things going on in the area oftechnology, and that takes a person to manage thatand make sure its working properly.
Also, Crossroads will accept bids for a newemployee management company. WoodbridgeManagement and Education Services currently hires
all the districts employees. Crossroads is seekingother bids to comply with Gov. Rick Snyders bestpractice guidelines, which require districts to acceptcompetitive bids on at least one contract over $50,000as part of the stipulations to receive a $100 per pupilincentive.
This is our only contract over that amount, saidboard treasurer Laura Vallette.
The board also authorized Gullekson to proceedon the purchase of new property for the school; ithopes to have the sale completed by Februarysboard meeting.
Crossroads finalized the purchase of propertyacross from the elementary school at its last regularboard meeting.
Other business included:n Vallette and Jimmie Rodgers were re-nominatedfor another three-year term on the board;
n High school principal Ross Meads shared withGullekson a certificate of appreciation from the U.S.Department of State for Crossroads participation inthe youth exchange program; and
n Board members were thanked for their serviceas part of School Board Appreciation month.
To see video from the Crossroads board meeting,visit www.bigrapidsnews.com. The board will meetgain at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9.
DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON WINTER
TIRE SAFETY
(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire safety incold weather is something every car owner should
be familiar with. Most drivers concentrate on tiresafety in hot weather to avoid blowouts, but the sameprecautions should be exercised in the winter. One ofthe most effective ways to be safe on the road is touse a winter tire specially designed for cold weather.
Common all-season tires contain a tread compoundthat gradually hardens when temperatures dip below45 degrees, resulting in a decrease in traction. Thesetires also tend to collect winter road debris, like snowand ice, which can impact a vehicles performanceon wintry roads.
Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount TireCompany, Americas largest independent tire andwheel retailer, advises motorists to replace all fourtires with winter tires if they can expect to encountersnow and ice during the winter months. Its best touse winter tires, especially if you live in an area withextreme weather conditions where temperatures
are below 45 degrees on a consistent basis, heexplains. Relying on an all-season tire to do thework of a winter tire can be dangerous to you andother motorists.
In recent years, the Rubber ManufacturersAssociation (www.rma.org) developed new standardsfor winter traction, which led to technologicaladvancements in the manufacture of winter tires. Forexample, a newer tread compound featuring a highersillica content retains tire flexibility even in freezingtemperatures, allowing the tread to maintain its gripwith the highway.
Also, tread block design has been greatly improvedwith the addition of thousands of sipes, small cuts
in the tread block that provide extra biting edges formore traction.
Every aspect of todays winter tire has beenengineered to provide better traction and greaterability to quickly expel water, slush and snow, providea quieter ride and allow for longer tread life, saysBallard.
Winter tires tend to be slightly more expensivethan all-season ones. But like all tires, winter tiresperform optimally when properly inflated. Rememberthat a significant drop in temperature can lower airpressure. Typically, a 10-degree drop will cause tiresto lose a pound of pressure.

DIGITAL REVOLUTION YIELDS NEW
OPPORTUNITY FOR FILMS
(NewsUSA) - Digital distribution revolutionized themusic industry to such an extent that its still reelingfrom the transformative power of mass downloading.As the music industry adjusts to the rocking changesof the digital wave, the film industry is going throughits own set of uncharted waters.
Though not without hiccups, digital distribution met
widespread success in the music industry. The digitalrevolution, however, has now shifted focus to the filmindustry with the dawn of Netflix, digital streamingand video-on-demand.
Theres never been a better time to be in the movieindustry, says Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven ArtsPictures. Large studios are relying on big-budgetpictures like 3D titles, but that opens up space forindependent studios to work on small-budget filmsand capitalize on digital distribution.
Seven Arts embraced the opportunity afforded bydigital distribution and staged a digital release fortheir most recent comedy, The Pool Boys. A digitalrelease via on-demand took place just days after
the theatrical release. Seven Arts recognized theprofitability of electronic delivery and the home-videomarket.
According to the annual Global Entertainment andMedia Outlook report, North America expected to$12.2 billion in box office revenue but $27.9 billion inhome-video profits in 2011.
The home-video market is growing in significanceas Blu-ray discs become increasingly popular, tickeprices continue to rise and electronic movie delivertransforms distribution. The Entertainment andMedia Outlook estimates an 13.8 percent annualprofit growth for electronic delivery.
Were seeing significant market opportunity dueto the cutback by major studios on producing small-budget films and the proliferation of digital distributionalternatives, says Hoffman.
Digital distribution made CDs practically obsolete,yet a new world of music was born with iTunes,
Pandora and Spotify. Who knows what changes thedigital revolution shall yield for the film industry? Fomore information on the changing movie industry, goto www.7artspictures.com.

mass radiation exposure in Japan andccupy Wall Street emerged to be aistorical, internationally united protest.he year 2011 seized the idea of social
change and ran with it.
Will that momentum continuethroughout 2012? All signs point to yes,nd Walden Universitys recent Socialhange Impact Report confirms the
trend. The results indicate the importanceof social change and reveal that peopleare taking action now and will continueto do so in the future. The survey showsthat more than nine in 10 Americans (92percent) have taken action to engage inpositive social change in the past yearand that more than half of them arecommitted to engaging in future positivechange as individuals acting on theirown or in informal groups.
Around the world, people are thinking
globally and acting locally, notesJonathan Kaplan, president of WaldenUniversity. People have a strong beliefin their own power to effect positivesocial change and make a difference.
The Social Change Impact Reportalso states that nearly nine in 10 adultsin the U.S. (88 percent) believe the bestway to have an impact on the world is tomake change at the local level. At a timewhen many families and organizationsre vulnerable, and fewer resources are
available to support the socioeconomichallenges that exist, individuals nowore than ever have the opportunity to
make a difference in their communitiesand beyond.
Walden University offers five practicaltips to encourage citizens to participatein 2012.
1. Think about what kind of positivesocial change you want to effect.
2. Assess what specific skills orexpertise you can offer to help addressa particular need.
3. Connect your passion and skillswith your commitment to serve.
4. Research ways your workplacecan get involved in the community.
5. Use a resource that can matchyou with an organization that needsyour skills.

HOW TO PREVENT VARICOSE
VEINS DURING PREGNANCY
(NewsUSA) - Cold winter monthsoften result in summertime births. July,
August and September are the mostcommon birthday months accordingto the 2010 National Vital StatisticsReports. Between 50 and 55 percent of
American women experience varicoseveins during pregnancy.
Its more than just a cosmetic issue,varicose veins can be painful and canlead to more serious health problems,
said Eva Rzucidlo, MD, chair of theSociety for Vascular Surgery WomensLeadership Committee.
The U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services Office on WomensHealth states that the following factorscontribute to varicose veins.
* Pregnancy: The growing uterus putspressure on the veins.
* Hormonal changes: During puberty,pregnancy and menopause.
* Medical history: Family memberswith varicose veins.
* Obesity: Extra weight adds pressureon the veins.
* Lack of movement: Sitting or standingfor long periods of time may force theveins to work harder to pump blood tothe heart.
* Increasing age: Veins may weakenwith age.
Lifestyle changes and medicaltreatments can often reduce varicoseveins. Suggestions to ease thediscomfort include:
* Sunscreen
* Regular exercise
* Proper weight
* Not crossing legs when sitting folong periods of time
* Elevating legs when resting
* Not sitting or standing for long periodsof time
* Wearing elastic support stockings
* Avoiding high-heel shoes for longperiods of time
* Eating a low-salt, high-fiber diet.
The first line of management fo
varicose vein treatment is medicalmanagement with compressionstockings worn daily, said Rzucidlo.Another option is sclerotherapy, thesealing off of the veins -- mainly donefor spider veins. Radiofrequency andlaser treatments are also options whichare minimally invasive proceduresoften performed in a doctors office. Fovery large varicose veins, a surgicalprocedure known as vein stripping isavailable.
