    THE GREAT FLAVORED MILK

    DEBATE

(NewsUSA) - A great debate has been building forhe past five years in school districts across the country:Is flavored milk contributing to childhood obesity, andhould it be taken out of schools?

Facts, research and experts say no. Flavored milkontains the same nine essential nutrients as whiteilk, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium,

hree nutrients that children arent getting enoughof, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for

    mericans.

On average, flavored milk accounts for only 2 percentof total calories and 3 percent of all added sugars inids diets. But studies show that schools see a severerop in milk consumption when chocolate milk is taken

away, says Alyssa Greenstein, a registered dietitianwith the Dairy Council of Florida. And the nutrientsost from not consuming enough milk arent easy oraffordable to replace.

Research finds that low-fat chocolate milk is the mostwidely chosen milk option in schools, and despite theavailability of white milk, children will turn to sodas andfruit drinks if flavored milk is removed from cafeterias.Sodas are the main source of added sugar in childrensdiets, and unlike milk, they offer no nutritional value.

Many nutrition and health organizations -- includingthe American Heart Association, the American Academyof Pediatrics, the American Dietetic Association and

the School Nutrition Association -- agree that flavoredmilk is a healthier alternative to soft drinks and a vitalpart of meeting the dietary needs of youngsters.

If children dont drink milk with lunch, it becomesalmost impossible for them to consume the dailyintake of calcium, vitamin D and potassium, which arenutrients of concern as it is, says Greenstein.

Drinking flavored milk is a small but significantcontributor to a childs total milk consumption, and itdoesnt mean youngsters neglect white milk. In fact, flavored milk makes up only 20-26 percent of kidstotal milk intake.

A recent survey of 1,000 moms discovered morethan half opposed any school district decision toeliminate chocolate milk from the menu. In the pastfive years, milk processors nationwide have madesignificant nutritional changes in milk formulations. With 38 percent less added sugar, flavored milk isprojected to contain, on average, just 31 calories morethan white milk.

    COUNTY SIGNS FIVE-YEAR

    CONTRACT WITH ANIMAL SHELTER

    From Staff Reports

BIG RAPIDS Mecosta County Commissionersoted 6-0 to approve a five-year contract to continueervices with the Mecosta County Animal Shelter, hich supersedes a short-term agreement signed lastonth.Under the new agreement, the animal shelter will

se lethal injection to euthanize unwanted dogs andtop usage of its carbon dioxiSde gas chamber. The shelter also is required to ensure that unwanted

nimals only be sent to Cheri Hill Kennels a classmedical research facility in Stanwood and its

n-site subsidiary. The kennel is licensed by the

U.S. Department of Agriculture to research animalroducts on dogs, such as dog food flavors or parasitevaccines.

Animals sent to Cheri Hill are not allowed tosubsequently be sent to similar facilities, according tothe contract.

(Ken and Susan) DeVries shall ensure that noanimals be transferred from Cheri Hill to any other classB dealer, said Commissioner Bill Routley. We felt thatonus should be on the DeVries since our contract is

with them and this is a stipulation in their contract withCheri Hill. It will be up to them to monitor that. The new long-term agreement supersedes a six-

month contract approved last month, which waspenned to allow county officials more time to ensurethat Cheri Hill would agree not to send dogs to otherclass B dealers.

The DeVries will be compensated $35,000 for 2012to operate the shelter. That rate will increase annuallythrough 2016 by either 1 percent or by the ConsumersPrice Index (CPI) inflation rate, as determined by theMichigan Department of Treasurer for property taxpurposes, whichever is greater.

In other news, commissioners Art Adleman and EricONeil were appointed commission chair and vice

chair, respectively, for 2012.Commissioners also appointed Paul MacKersie,of Barryton, to the countys Department of VeteranAffairs Board of Trustees. MacKersie is a member ofthe Barryton American Legion Post No. 473.

    ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEATING KEEPS

    COST-CONSCIOUS HOMES COZY

(NewsUSA) - With many Americans watching theirbudgets, heating homes has become an unwanted, though necessary, expense.

According to the U.S. Energy InformationAdministration, many American homes will experiencehigher heating costs this winter due to increased fuelprices. Thankfully, simple behavior changes andenergy-efficient appliances can help homeownerscut their heating bills and still enjoy the same level ofcomfort.

Energy-efficient heating means that you use lessenergy to heat the same space, said Phil Weeks, chief operating officer of Rinnai America Corporation,

a company that manufactures gas heating appliances. This saved energy translates into reduced utility costsfor homeowners.

Some energy-efficient heating devices, like Rinnaishydronic furnace, which works in conjunction with thecompanys tankless water heater, can heat a homewhile still conserving energy. Featuring a high-efficiencymotor that offers up to 48 percent better efficiency thana comparable traditional motor, the hydronic furnaceis powered by Rinnais gas-modulating tanklesstechnology, so it uses only the energy needed tomaintain a rooms desired temperature. Because theunit utilizes hot water from the tankless water heater toheat air, the heat it provides is less dry than that of a

    typical forced-air furnace.

Another efficient heating option is to forego atraditional furnace in favor of a direct vent wall furnace. These ductless units are capable of comfortably heatingwhole homes or specific zones, depending on the need,

and save energy by constantly adjusting heat outpuand blower speed to meet current demand. Rinnaigas-modulating direct vent wall furnace also can serveas a supplementary heat source for basements, gues

rooms, room additions and generally hard-to-heaareas, thus reducing the demand placed on a homecentral heating system.

Of course, homeowners can take steps to help theicurrent heating units operate on less energy. Considethe following efforts:

    * Seal and weather strip doors and windows toprevent heat from escaping the home.

    * Reverse the direction of ceiling fans (so they turnclockwise) to push warm air down from the ceiling.

    * Minimize the use of bathroom and kitchen hood

fans as they can quickly remove heat from the air.

    For more information, visit www.rinnai.us.

    SOCIAL CHANGE: A NEW YEARS

    RESOLUTION FOR 2012

(NewsUSA) - Political unrest, environmental criseand economic challenges on a global scale practicalldefined 2011. The Arab Spring ousted three iron-fistedrulers, a deadly earthquake led to mass radiationexposure in Japan and Occupy Wall Street emergedto be a historical, internationally united protest. Theyear 2011 seized the idea of social change and ranwith it.

Will that momentum continue throughout 2012? Allsigns point to yes, and Walden Universitys recent SocialChange Impact Report confirms the trend. The resultindicate the importance of social change and revealthat people are taking action now and will continue todo so in the future. The survey shows that more thannine in 10 Americans (92 percent) have taken action toengage in positive social change in the past year andthat more than half of them are committed to engagingin future positive change as individuals acting on theiown or in informal groups.

Around the world, people are thinking globally andacting locally, notes Jonathan Kaplan, president oWalden University. People have a strong belief in theiown power to effect positive social change and makea difference.

The Social Change Impact Report also states thanearly nine in 10 adults in the U.S. (88 percent) believethe best way to have an impact on the world is to makechange at the local level. At a time when many familieand organizations are vulnerable, and fewer resourceare available to support the socioeconomic challengethat exist, individuals now more than ever have theopportunity to make a difference in their communitieand beyond.

Walden University offers five practical tips to

encourage citizens to participate in 2012.

    1. Think about what kind of positive socialchange you want to effect.

    2. Assess what specific skills or expertise youcan offer to help address a particular need.

    3. Connect your passion and skills with youcommitment to serve.

    4. Research ways your workplace can geinvolved in the community.

    5. Use a resource that can match you with an

    organization that needs your skills.

    PARENTAL FEARS

(NewsUSA) - The kids are in school, which means they spend most of theirday without parental supervision. The

days when parents only had to worrybout their kids skipping class andetting bullied for lunch money areone. Now, new threats have emergedround cell phone use.

According to a survey performed byInternet monitoring software company

pectorSoft, sexting is parents primaryoncern during the school season.

Absolutely, said Rebecca Hagelin, parent who uses SpectorSoft to tracker three teenagers. Its allowed myhildren to enjoy all the benefits theatest technology has to offer them,

nd its allowed me to protect themrom the dangers of some of the newechnology, she said. Its a win-win.

Smartphones with advanced Internetapabilities have greatly increasedarental fears about cyberbullies, onlineredators, sexting and the exchange of

    nappropriate messages and pictures.

SpectorSoft reports that 82 percentf all families surveyed contain at leastne child who has a smartphone. Even

f teachers and school faculty can keeptudents off their phones during schoolours, who protects them after school?

Bryan Bowers, author of Keep YourFamily Safe Online, said that thesurvey proves parents are starting togain greater awareness of what theirchildren are actually up to on theirphones and online. So many children

have smartphones, and this tells meparents are starting to get the ideathat these devices can be a problemfor children, Bowers said. They arestarting to see the reality of what is outthere.

SpectorSoft, focused on monitoringproducts for children since theirinception in 1998, has released eBlasterMobile for Android and BlackBerryphones. This software keeps trackof all activity on these smartphonesby monitoring and recording textmessages, calls and Internet activityand then sending that information to

the parent. It also has Geofencingcapabilities to enable parents to betterunderstand the whereabouts of theirchildren through their mobile devices.Parents can create electronic locationboundaries -- or fences -- that trigger analert notification when their child entersor exits a pre-defined area with theirmobile device.

eBlaster is designed for maximumparental convenience and child safety. The software can be downloaded fromits website, www.spectorsoft.com,and then managed from any remotelocation. Plus, it has a GPS function

reporting the exact location of the

phone in the event of emergencies.

    MINIMIZE RETIREMENT RISK WITH

    PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE

    (NewsUSA) - With persistent

economic uncertainty, retirementworries plague many Americans.Instead of dreaming about their goldenyears, workers may be haunted bythe possibility of a retirement wherethe idea of not having enough moneymay not be hyperbole. Consumers arelooking to diminish risk and take control.

A financial professional will tailor a planto fit an individuals own financial goals, but permanent life insurance shouldbe a part of any diversified retirementstrategy and can offer security andgrowth for those with a number ofworking years ahead.

Permanent life insurance offers deathprotection as well as the potential forcash value accumulation, which canbe an important source of retirementincome. As the value of a permanentpolicy grows tax deferred over time, thecash may be used for any purpose.* Thiskind of life insurance offers a measureof flexibility that enables consumers tomake choices and better manage theirfinancial lives and can augment otherincome sources like Social Security,401k savings or pensions for thoselucky enough to have them.

The income stream from a permanent

life insurance policy may also help cover

the gap years, which fall betweenretirement and the age when Medicareand Social Security benefits begin. Most retirees will need the guidanceof a financial professional to determinethe best use of resources during the

gap period and throughout retirement. However, consumers should know thaa permanent insurance policy could bethe difference between retirement at anage you desire instead of when SocialSecurity and qualified plan distributionsstart. This additional resource may alsoenable a retiree to delay the start oSocial Security payments, which willultimately deliver larger monthly sumsover time.

In addition to assisting with bridgingthe gap years, a permanent insurancepolicy may help cover unexpected oplanned expenses from healthcare

costs, to paying for a grandchildscollege education, to contributing to thestart-up of a family business.

No matter how permanent insuranceis ultimately used, if structured properly,a policy can provide an income tax- andestate tax-free death benefit. Retireescan then spend their retirement incomeknowing they will still leave a legacy totheir children or a favorite charity.

To learn more about how to leave alegacy and strengthen your retiremenplan with permanent life insurance, please visit www.pennmutual.com.
