WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT
Martha’s Musings:
This year’s theme for the Annual Fall Institute is “Reaching Higher Ground in Healthcare” and this is so
applicable for our current healthcare environment. As we once again visit one of my favorite places, the Great
Smoky Mountain National Park, and with this theme in mind, I reach back to my favorite movie, The Sound of
Music, for one of my favorite songs - “Climb Every Mountain.” From the lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein:
“Climb every mountain, search high and low, follow every byway, every path you know.”
In the ever changing environment of healthcare, I think we constantly feel like we are climbing every mountain
with each passing change to the healthcare world. We are striving to find ways to deal with the latest
reimbursement cuts and trying to determine how to provide the care to the patients with less funding. We are
searching for that more efficient and more effective means of accomplishing great patient care with less. We
hope that the sessions that are planned for the Fall Institute will help you to Reach Higher Ground for some
solutions to the issues that you face every day.
On Wednesday afternoon, we will have the STAR committee meetings! This is your way to become involved
in your chapter and really meet some great people! While time will be spent planning for the remainder of the
HFMA year, it is also a time of fun. Plan to join in and GET INVOLVED!
On Wednesday night, please plan to attend the ever popular annual Kurt Swersky Memorial BBQ which honors
a former TN HFMA member who was a valued and dedicated member of the TN chapter and Gregg Swersky
continues in his brother’s footsteps in that regard. Thanks, Gregg, for hosting such a great and always
memorable event each year! You never know what you will see – could be snow, could be bears, could be deer,
but there will always be a host of great friends!
At Thursday’s lunch, we will continue to celebrate the success of the 2014-15 chapter year with Doc
Burchfield’s leadership team by presenting the chapter awards. Along with this celebration, we will present the
annual Founder Awards and the other chapter awards. You don’t want to miss this exciting celebration.
Special thanks to David Lane and Cynthia McBride for leading an outstanding Fall Institute Committee.
Thanks, too, for the committee’s time in planning this event. They have invited great speakers and planned
great networking time for you to escape to “higher ground”, to recharge the batteries, and to find solutions to
climb the mountain.
So, I hope you join me in Gatlinburg for this exciting program to help you follow every path to help you “Reach
Higher Ground!” Take time while you are there to enjoy the ever popular transformation of the mountains into
their beautiful colors of fall!
Safe travels to Gatlinburg – see you there!
Martha

12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Concurrent Session: Ongoing Absence of Necessary Providers- Overcoming the Barriers to Challenging Physician Recruitment and Retention
Anthony D'Eredita and Randy Gott There are about 6,000 federally designated areas of the United States with a shortage of PCPs, according to HHS. In rural
areas, there are about 68 PCPs per 100,000 residents, compared with 84 PCPs in more urban areas. In five counties in
Kansas, there are no PCPs at all. Approximately, about a fifth of Americans live in rural areas, but barely a tenth of
physicians practice there. This is but one of the challenging factors impacting physician recruitment and retention. Other
areas include specialty not geography related recruitments, the aging of the profession, lack of succession planning, and
misalignment of resident practice desires vs. community needs. Combine this with our current regulatory environment and
legal restrictions and we have significant barriers to overcome. This session explores these challenges and alternative
approaches to mitigating them. Travel across the geography with us and join a conversation around the challenges of
recruitment and retention.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the challenging recruitment and retention environment
Identify barriers to success
Describe the regulatory framework around recruitment and retention
List alternatives to successful recruitment and retention

4:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Leveraging Electronic Health Record Capabilities to Drive Sustainable Improvements in Your Revenue Cycle (and Beyond)
Todd Hakala and Murray S. (“Skip”) Marsh, Jr.
Since the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act in 2009, most
healthcare provider organizations have undergone or are in the process of undergoing electronic health record (EHR)
conversions or upgrades. In many cases, the transition has negatively affected productivity, cash flow, user satisfaction,
and other performance indicators. EHRs can be very powerful tools in driving improved clinical, operational, and
financial performance, and providers should now be evaluating EHR optimization opportunities as they seek to get back
to and improve upon pre-conversion performance levels.
In this session, the speakers will provide a macro-level overview of what EHR optimization is, the key steps that can be
taken to fully understand and implement EHR functionality, and the importance of addressing all aspects of performance
(i.e. people, process, and tools / technology) when designing and implementing EHR enhancements. Utilizing a case
study, they will then demonstrate specific ways to leverage and optimize the EHR within the revenue cycle to drive
sustainable financial and operational improvements. This will be followed by an overview of EHR optimization
opportunities in other areas.
Learning Objectives:
Identify what EHR optimization is and how it relates to strategic and operational planning

Kurt Swersky Memorial BBQ – Wednesday Evening
The annual Kurt Swersky Memorial BBQ will be held at the Twin Creeks Picnic
Shelter in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (see registration desk for
directions). This Annual BBQ is hosted by Gregg Swersky and Revenue Recovery in
honor of a Gregg’s brother Kurt. Kurt was a dedicated and passionate member of TN
HFMA when he passed away in December 1990. Kurt was active in the chapter and
had served on many committees and Fall Institute planning committees before his
passing. From an article in an early 1991 edition of the Volunteer Voice, “Kurt will
always be remembered for the outdoor barbecue cook-outs that he frequently
organized and sponsored at our Fall Institute. The warm and friendly atmosphere of
those events was exemplified by Kurt's own personality.” Past President, Curtis
Curley stated: “When I was HFMA president I always knew that Kurt could be relied
upon to help in any way he could. The Tennessee Chapter has not only lost a valued
and dedicated member, we have lost a friend.” Gregg continues this tradition in
honor of Kurt. Please join in for lots of good food, fun, and fellowship. Don't forget
- you might need a coat!
