February Section Meeting

PRESENTATION TITLE: "Chemistry of Sports: Smarter, Safer, Faster"

Abstract: In the world of competitive and professional sports, chemistry is more impactful than you

might think. Discover the materials that chemists are creating to enable athletes to perform better and stay

safer, as well as how analytical chemistry is advancing to detect performance enhancing substances in order

to keep the playing field level for everyone. During this interactive event, viewers will be able to network with

young chemists and have an opportunity to ask questions live to the experts regarding the amazing work that

is being done in sports science.

Community Outreach: STEAM Night at Wiley Middle School

On January 14, Wiley Magnet Middle School in Winston-Salem hosted STEAM Night, a community event dedicated to sharing the school's focus on STEAM with the community. STEAM, standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math, has become the magnet focus of the school. Teachers work hard to connect what they are teaching with STEAM. ACS representative Dr. Dance-Barnes from Winston-Salem State University was able to share some of her knowledge and experience with current and prospective Wiley families. She engaged the community with her display of pH levels from cabbage water.

Poster Vendor Night is Coming: Mark your Calendars and

Invite your Colleagues

The Central NC section of the ACS will be holding their 17th Annual Poster Vendor Night

(PVN) on Tuesday, March 28th at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nano-

engineering/Gateway University Research Park. Easily, our biggest event of the year, PVN

highlights chemical research from industrial, graduate and undergraduate groups in the Triad,

while at the same time offering you face to face access to many of the top chemistry supply

and instrumentation companies. Please contact Jill Tierney ([email protected]) or Bill

Eberle ([email protected]) for more information about presenting posters and

Sameer Tyagi ([email protected]) if you are interested in participating as a ven-

dor.

ACS membership is not required to present or attend.

Announcing: Student Travel Grants for Spring 2017

The Central North Carolina (CNC) Section of the American Chemical Society has a limited num-ber of travel grants available for Student Members presenting at the spring ACS National Meet-ing in San Francisco. Applications are to be submitted electronically and are due 9:00 pm March 1, 2017. We hope to notify recipients and disburse funds by March 15.

To be eligible for a student travel grant, the student must:

be a member of ACS and attend a college/university in the CNC-ACS region (Alamance, Forsyth, Guilford, Rockingham, Stokes, and Surry counties);

be presenting a poster or oral presentation at the meeting.

Preference will be given to students who have presented posters at the CNC-ACS “Poster Ven-dor Night” (PVN) prior to 2017, or to those who are registered to present at the CNC-ACS PVN in 2017.

To apply for a student travel grant, send an email to [email protected], with subject line: Student Travel Grant Application, by 9:00 pm March 1 with the following information:

1. Name and home address of student.

2. Name and address of college/university.

3. Copy of ACS membership card or other proof of membership.

4. Title and abstract of the presentation, and proof of acceptance (copy of acceptance letter).

5. A statement of whether you presented a poster at PVN, along with title and date the poster was presented.

A statement of whether you are registered to present a poster at the 2017 PVN, and if so, the title of the poster.

The number and value of these grants are limited, so it is likely that not all applicants will receive a grant. The decisions regarding this grant program are at the discretion of the CNC-ACS Exec-utive Board, and will be affected by budget constraints and the total number of applications re-ceived.

We wish you the best of luck, and we know you will do a great job representing our section in San Francisco!!!

Letter from the Chair

While I am pleased to serve as the CNC-ACS Chair for 2017, I can't help but feel a little overwhelmed as I contemplate the task that lies before me. Fortunately, we have a section with a rich history of outstanding programs, sound finances, great leaders, and members who are both knowledgeable and willing to get in-volved. I look forward to working with all members to continue the tradition of great programs for our mem-bers and our community.

I'd like to start by thanking all members who contributed to our programs in the past. We cannot have suc-cessful programs like Poster Vendor Night, National Chemistry Week, or the Silver Circle without the dedi-cation of many, many people who are willing to organize, set up, clean up, or participate! We hope that those who participated were rewarded with a learning experience, a networking experience, a social experi-ence, and a little fun. I know I was, and I thank you all for your hard work! But I think there are a few mem-bers who deserve extra praise; members who championed and nurtured programs to help them grow. In particular, I'd like to thank those involved with: Poster Vendor Night (Jill Tierney, Bill Eberle, Sameer Tyagi and all of the many volunteers), National Chemistry Week (Cynthia Williard, leader), and the Silver Circle (Robert Yokley, leader). I'd also like to give special thanks to Debbie Pritchard who spearheaded growth in our involvement with the North Carolina Science Teachers Association and with the ACS Science Coaches program; and to our past chair, Fenghai Guo, who carried the baton for us in 2016. All of these programs were outstanding in 2016, and we look forward to even bigger and better programs in 2017! And of course, we cannot forget the behind-the-scenes work that Bill Eberle and Tim Ballard do to keep our newsletter and website up to date. To all of you, I believe I speak for the entire section when I say, “THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!”

As for the coming year, I am joined on the executive committee by Gail Webster who was elected the Chair Elect, and by John Merle and Robert Yokley who were elected the secretary/treasurer and counselor, re-spectively. We hope to continue the tradition of interesting and timely topics at our monthly meetings, and to provide fun and educational opportunities for all members. We already had a talk on pesticides and polli-nator health; other potential topics and programs include a chemistry of sports webinar, bioadhesives in asphalt, a chemistry demonstration show, GMO foods, a science cafe, and a family night at one of the local science activity centers. We also have a unusually large number of local students who will be presenting talks or posters at various ACS functions this year and we hope to provide increased support to help them attend and represent our section well!

In closing, I urge each of you to consider where you can contribute to the success of the CNC-ACS and let me know of any particular interests you have for programs, participation, or leadership positions. Together, we can make 2017 another outstanding year in CNC-ACS history!

Yours truly,

Dennis Ergle
