SYSTEM CONFIGURATION RECOMMENDATIONS

TrialDirector can be installed as a client/server package, allowing a specified number of users to access the software. This type of install offers a lower cost of ownership as well as simplified maintenance.

The recommended and optimal hardware configurations for workstations, servers, and network infrastruc-ture are shown below. The minimum configuration will provide adequate performance, however, the recom-mended configuration provides greater speed and enhanced video playback due to the increased proces-sor speed, additional video memory, and RAM.

Recommended Client System

Windows™ XP Professional

1024 MB RAM

64MB+ AGP Video Adapter

Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher)

SVGA Monitor (1280 x 1024) at 24-bit Color (True color)

Dual Monitor Output

Sound card and speakers (required for Audio/Video functions)

120 GB Hard disk space available (to store local video and document files)

DVD-ROM Drive

100Mb (or better) Network Adapter

Minimum Client System Requirements

Network Infrastructure Recommendations

The Network infrastructure recommendations shown below will ensure that the TrialDirector Network Server Edition has a robust operating environment. Adhering to these recommendations will allow faster response times when accessing database and image information across the network.

100 Base T (or higher) Local Area Network

Only Local Area Networks are supported

Server Hardware/Software Requirements

inData designed, developed, and tested TrialDirector for use with actual Windows servers. The TrialDirec-tor network installation should work on other Windows™ compatible file servers, such as Samba or Novell, however, it is not warranted to do so.

Windows Terminal Server and Citrix Considerations

Note: The TrialDirector Network Installation version has not been certified for application server platforms, such as Windows Terminal Server and Citrix, and is therefore not warranted to perform in those environments.

Since some users have reported successfully installing TrialDirector in Terminal Server or Citrix environ-ments, inData offers the following suggestions for using TrialDirector in these unsupported environments, based on observations of others.

Install the Network Server software from a client workstation to the server. Make sure to install to the server via a mapped drive letter. Do not login to the terminal server directly to install the Network Server software.

Because the TrialDirector software is run entirely from the application server, the client installation MUST be installed to the server, in addition to the server installation. The dependency files (.DLL, .OCX) files needed to run the TrialDirector Suite are executed directly from the application server in this scenario.

Windows Terminal Server and Citrix users must install the Client.exe program via Add/Remove Programs within Control Panel to ensure successful installation.

When establishing a Terminal Services connection that will automatically run the TrialDirector programs, make sure to use the full UNC path. Using the local directory path will not match the UNC path established during the network server installation. Failing to launch TrialDirector from the correct UNC path will result in prompts for product activation.

Due to the 256-color depth limitation of Windows Terminal Server, using TrialDirector only for reviewing black & white TIFF images is recommended. Color photos and videos will not display properly when using a 256-color depth.

Since application servers can allow remote users to log into the server and run software remotely, there is a high probability that response times will be slower than over a LAN.

Product support under Windows Terminal Server and Citrix for Windows is limited to issues with the TrialDirector software, exclusive of its use in unsupported environments.

NETWORK INSTALLATION

The network install procedure consists of three main steps:1. Mapping the network drive.

2. Installing the TrialDirector package on the server.

3. Installing the client application on users’ computers.

Mapping the Network Drive

For ease of maintenance, inData recommends that the TrialDirector client/server package be installed from a workstation on the network, not directly from the server that will host the application. In order to execute the installation from the workstation, the destination server must be a mapped drive on the workstation. This limitation is imposed by the installation software. After the network installation has been completed, TrialDirector will allow the use of UNC pathing for case locations and so on. (Mapping a network drive is a standard Windows™ procedure, and will not be described in this document.)

Important Note: Perform the mapping operation before launching the TrialDirector Network Server installation.

Installing the TrialDirector Package

The individual performing the installation must have administrator privileges on the server and client work-stations.

2. The Network Server Setup dialog displays. (Please be patient – it may take the install-er a couple of minutes to validate before launching.) Take a few moments to read the process overview that is provided on the dialog. Click Next to continue.

1. Load the TrialDirector installation CD in a drive on a network workstation. If the installation program does not launch automatically, locate and double-click the NetSetup.exe file. This will begin the process of installing the TrialDirector license and the application to the server.

Note: inData recommends executing the installation from a workstation PC to a server – not directly from the target server. Note also that the automated Uninstall function in the Windows Add or Remove Programs control panel will only be available from the workstation where the installation was performed.

3. Read the license agreement and select the “I Accept” option to continue, or select “I do not accept” to cancel the installation. The Next button will be available only if “I accept” is selected. Click Next to continue.

4. Enter the Network Server Serial Number and click Next to continue. If an invalid serial number is entered, you will not be allowed to continue. When a valid serial number is entered, the activation dialog is displayed.

5. Click the Register Online link to get your activation code over the Internet. (If there is no Internet or e-mail access, use the 800 number to contact inData Customer Service.) The activation dialog displays the serial number entered on the previous screen, along with the Product Registration ID. You will need these numbers if you are going to call inData for an activation code.

6. The Registration screen will request basic contact information. Use an administrator identity for the e-mail address to ensure that notifications are sent to the correct individual. Click Submit to display the Ac-tivation Code. Enter the Activation Code in the space provided in the installer dialog, then click Next.

7. The next dialog shows the default applica-tion and case data folders. The default folders are selected from the first mapped network drive on your system. Click the Browse buttons to select different paths on your network.

Note: The TrialDirector installation will place the application files at two folder levels. Using the Network Server Ap-plication Folder example at right, most files are placed in the lowest level folder (TrialDirector 5\), but some additional files are installed at the next higher level (inData). Make certain that you allow for this two-level folder requirement if you are creating your own folders.

8. Click Next to continue after confirming or selecting the destination folder paths.

Installing the Network Client

The client installation can be run from a mapped network drive or a UNC path.

Note: The Client Install.msi must be run from the same path where it was installed. This allows the Client Install.msi to verify the server license location.

1. Navigate to the server location where the TrialDirector application resides. Click on the Client Install.msi file to launch the installation dialog. (The Client Install.msi can use the /q switch for quiet install, if desired.)

Note: Launch the installation from the network server. DO NOT copy the Client Install.msi to the client workstation.

Note: The client installation defaults to the path %Program_Files%\inData\TrialDirector 5 and cannot be changed.

2. Read the license agreement and select the “I Accept” option to continue, or select “I do not accept” to cancel the installation. The Next button will be available only if “I accept” is selected. Click Next to continue.
