The Mid Anglia MCCpresents for your enjoyment

Just a bit squeezed in thismonth. It transpires that follow-

ing the Raydon Pit trial Ted’s talkat the beginning of trials will haveto cover risk assessment if the go-ings on at section 10 is anything togo by. One or two - Greg Radley toname one - found themselves atthe bottom of the bank by the roadwhilst waiting to enter the section. It seem those with right legs short-er than their left legs need to takeextra care to prevent themselvestoppling over into the brambles!

Norman has sent me a collec-tion of words that he says - “In an-swer to editor Chris’s request forany old rubbish to fill some emptypages I’ve decided to inflict on youall - A Tale of Three Barnetts” Andlook out next month for anotherstory from John Daly.

I’ve mislaid my notes from thelast committee meeting so they’ve

all got away with it and if I wasasked to put something in theT&T…you’ve got away with it aswell.

Some of you will have knownTony Wright of Gt Barton who re-cently passed away. He was a mem-ber of the EFA and rode in trialsand scrambles during the 50/60'swith Doug Theobald and others ofthe same age group, he also latterlyrode in some of the vet. Trials, ourthoughts are with his family at thissad time.

Just one more thing, a get wellsoon to El President following hisrecent back operation, the rumouris that just before he went underthe knife a slurred request wasmade to the surgeon to use qualityJawa parts only!

Keep welland stay clean,

It’s difficult to do much riding in mydrive so I would have to use the

next Woodbridge trial at Blaxhall totest the bike properly – to find itsstrengths, weaknesses etc. Weakness-es were duly found, the strengthsmay come later. The bike started tofluff at low throttle when hot, usuallyat the bottom of a climb, and startingbecame difficult. Fuel starvation per-haps? The collective opinion wascrank oil seals, which made sense.Stripping the relevant parts, the firstpot-hole revealed itself. Whoever de-signed the Villiers 32A motor had asense of humour: the points fit intothe outer magneto case and one ofthe two screw threads (there is astud too, in case you were gettingworried, making three fasteners) wasstripped so that the cover, and withit the points, was flapping about.Along with the rattles, was this some-thing ‘they all did’? Perhaps ignitiontiming is not very important.

The offending thread is in thebacking ‘armature’ case, along withthe RHS oil seal, so off this came.Only four little screws hold the entirecaboodle on to the crankcase, andthe screw heads looked all of their 50years. One of the nice men at VilliersServices (that’s either Louis or Steve, both of whom I would get to knowquite well) said they would put a heli-coil in for a fiver. Better than me buy-ing the kit at over £30 for just oneinsert.

Turns out that Blaxhall was aClass C championship trial and whilemy parts were away with Villiers thetrial was reported in the weekly ACU

national sports round-up email. Badluck that there were only two en-trants in the two-stroke class (Easyroute) as the report mentioned thefirst two positions in each category. Icame second/last with a humongousscore, so my one (and probably only)mention in the national bike presswent into some detail over my inabili-ty to get to grips with ‘riding on theright’. It was the bike, not me, hon-est!

New oils seals in and the timingset – that’s another story, that youcan’t control the timing and thepoints dwell separately – and it wastime for my inaugural Thumpers. Iwas reassured that the trial routehad been softened a touch this yearand a plumped for the Easy routeagain. I might have realised that thiswould not end well when the bikeproved tough to start while waitingfor the timer to wave me off. Startingbecame progressively worse as thetrial ground on, though once goingthe bike ran passably well. Then thekick-start wouldn’t return so somesections were ridden with my shinhard against the lever. After a coupleof laps, at a section a long way fromthe car park, the bike packed up alltogether. I set out on the Long Walkof Shame. Funnily enough wheneventually back at my car the Spritestarted again. I may have to call itModestine.

Once again the collective carpark wisdom was called on for advice.Experienced Villiers owners all toldme that there was little point mess-

ing further until I had fitted electron-ic ignition. Well, what’s couple ofhundred quid plus VAT, so back toLouis and Steve. I ordered a smallergearbox sprocket while I was at it. Itwas while fitting this lot that I discov-ered that the carb didn’t fit fully ontothe inlet stub, so that air leakedthrough the slots in the clamp. Thismay have been the issue all along. The stub was clearly fabricated tocant the carb to the side, to makeroom for the in-frame silencer. Butquite how, after such a serious mod,the owner didn’t make sure that thecarb fitted onto the inlet stub is be-yond me. In a fit of late night desper-ation I tried to improve the situationusing grinding paste, the fine gradeobviously. The wise amongst you willhave guessed that all this did wastake metal off the carb body andhardly touched the stainless steel

stub. So off to MCS engineers (Col-chester) who overnight turned ashort tube to the correct dimensionsand welded this onto the stub. Greatwork chaps.

I should mention that I spent avery frustrating weekend fitting thenew ignition set up. A beautiful con-struction (Electrex World) but wouldit fire the engine? A few pops andbangs (one even blew the carb off!**!)but it would not run. I got my strobetiming light on the case and eventual-ly located the spark about 90 degreesadvanced. I began to fume. On thephone first thing Monday to Steve (orwas it Louis) who calmly told me thatthe wires to the coil needed to be re-versed then it would work fine. It did.Why-oh-why was this not mentionedin the charming colour-printed instal-lation leaflet? TO BE CONTINUED…...

Taken over fifty years ago in the summer of 1964 can you name thesethree school boy friends on Greeves who until recently were all still

riding Greeves. Answer can be found further on in the T&T.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

I first developed a fancy for a littleblack Francis Barnett in the early

days of Pre 65 trials. I was at a trialin the wilds of Yorkshire when Isaw Blackie Holden, a well knownYorkshire rider of the past, turn upon a very pretty early fifties Barnett, all spindly and light looking, andseemingly easy to ride. I don’t recallseeing him with his feet down veryoften, but then again he had beenvery good and hadn’t lost his touch.

I decided that if I had thechance I would have one of those,

but you don’t see them for sale veryoften. Fast forward a few years and Iheard of a fellow in Kent who wasselling off the contents of his latemate’s garage for the widow.I aslooking for some bits for an Arieland he thought there were some soI set off to see. Turns out the Arielbits had mostly gone but this ga-rage was an alladins cave of good-ies so I asked if he had any Francis

Barnett bits. He said thathis old friend had a bit ofa thing for ‘em so we setabout searching. To cut a long story short(sorry Chris) he turnedup more than half a bike, the front end havingbeen written off in a colli-sion apparently. It wasthe right one, probably1954 ish I thought, so Itook it away. Not manydays later he rang meand said ‘do you stillhave the Barnett?’ Ofcourse I had, so he toldme he had found somepaperwork for it and itwas an ex works ISDTbike. It had been used inthe ISDT and the WelshThree days Trial, includ-ing the selection tests forthe British Team, notonce but starting as a125 and being updatedeach year until, I think,

1956 when it and two similar bikes

won the Team Award in the ISDT. Iwas horrified! The last thing I want-ed was a bike that was so special itjust had to be restored as originaland preserved. I wanted a bike Icould happily take ahacksaw to, andmodify as I pleased. So, I needed to findsomeone who woulddo it justice. I tried to interestSammy Miller, whowas as rude as everand didn’t want toknow, and then I hada bit of luck. I founda man at Kemptonwho had restored anex works Greeves ISDT bike and hewas keen to do this one. A deal wasstruck and he got stuck in. For the next few months Iwould get regular news of hisprogress, and it was fascinating. He found the man who had riddenit, articles from period magazinesabout the bikes and the events, and even a road test (or off roadtest) using some of the Welsh 3 daycourse, comparing this bike with aworks rigid bike as that argumentwas still going on. As an illustra-tion of his determination to get itright, when he came to have anexhaust made like the original onehe discovered that the engine inthe bike had been changed, it wasa 197 and had been a 175 in theISDT. It was not just a differentbore, the exhaust port was at a dif-ferent angle. How he managed it Idon’t know but he had a ‘correct’175 barrel made. So, the bike wasrestored as it should be, and the

good news is that all three of theteam bikes have been done and aresometimes to be seen together.RESULT.

MY MARK ONE BARNETT(The heavy one)

I managed to find enough bitsto begin building my own bike. Nat-urally I’d had a good look at theworks bike and I incorporatedsome of their frame mods. I alsofound an Australian who had re-cently built a similar trials bikeand he sent me some details of hismods and an article he’d had pub-lished. He had found details of theGeorge Fisher bikes of 1954 and 55.The first of these was only 125ccbut he finished second on it in theScottish Six Days Trial. The follow-ing year it was a 225 (bored out197) and again he finished secondin Scotland, to Jeff Smith, and byonly one mark. (If anyone wants tobuild a George Fisher replica I stillhave all the details.) I built it as a197 and it went together quite nice-ly. I didn’t take any pains aboutkeeping the weight down as I

Page 9: TRIALS - Eastern Fourstroke Association · trants in the two-stroke class (Easy route) as the report mentioned the first two positions in each category. I came second/last with a

9

thought it wasn’t necessary. I waswrong. After the inevitable develop-ment changes, particularly an enor-mous silencer with 6 times thecubic capacity of the engine, and astinger at the back to keep thenoise down, it was really quiteporky. Despite this the bike wasquite successful, winning ACU Brit-ish Bike Championship in 1994and 1995 but I resolved to build alightweight.

MARK TWO(Lightweight)

I found an ally Ajax cylinder ofa full 250cc and after checking thatthis was acceptable (bike specswere more policed back then) I de-cided to build another bike. Thecylinder was a bit crude, and I dida lot of work on the ports beforefitting it, but it was nice and light. Iwas delighted with the steering andhandling of the Mark 1, and itseemed to grip better than mostbikes, so I wanted to use the sameframe. The forks were a bit heavyso I built it with the earlier forks,as used by Fisher, as they were

much lighter. Mistake. I bent themin the first trial I rode, and thatwas without falling off the thing. Ilater discovered that the worksbikes had an extra bush for morerigidity but I don’t see how thatwould help, they bent under thebottom yoke. So it was back to themore robust later forks and I waslucky enough to buy an ex workspair from Mick Dismore who usedto ride a works James. I was quite

excited to find thatthese these were ac-tually damped, un-like the previousbike, but this provedto be no advantageas the travel wasrestricted and I’mnot sure the stand-ard forks on the Mk1 weren’t better. Iwas delighted withthis bike and rode itfor a number of

years. It started off with the lightweight 3 speed gearbox but after atrial in Wales where we had to rideover a mountain between sections Ifitted the heavier and much wider 4speeder. Both Graham Stewardand I who had three speeders wereforced to ride for what seemed likehours in first gear as we could notpull second, and it was pretty tedi-ous. As if to prove my theory that anew bike makes you try harder Iagain won the championship in1999 despite advancing age anddeclining ability. Perhaps that is why I sold it.Certainly I’ve regretted it since.
