A meeting point of cultures throughout the centuries, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs and Catalans found in the island a strategic spot for navigating the Mediterranean. Perhaps due to this multicultural secular coexistence, or for reasons that are beyond human understanding, or precisely because here it exists, Ibiza oozes absolute tolerance. Every person is just as they are and on Ibiza can be what they want. And all this is amid a natural gentle and rolling landscape with the sea everywhere, enabling one’s spirit to rise to the heights of plenitude.

A book for readers of all ages with 41 poems by Josep Carner – translated for the occasion by the poet Mary Ann Newman – and illustrated with magnificent photographs of the same animals which – sculpted and rendered in sgraffito or wrought iron – can be found on the façades, railings and fountains and in the gardens of Barcelona: arguably the European city with the most extensive and complete bestiary which can be enjoyed during a leisurely stroll.

During the 14th and 15th centuries, Barcelona was a privileged place in the Mediterranean to foster an intense creativity that remains today in its architecture, sculpture and painting of an unmistakable Gothic style. This shows through in this new book thanks to the original points of view of its authors Raimon Arola and Victoria Cirlot, and the photographer Pere Vivas.

The Palau de la Música Catalana discovers the secrets of the pro-digious building in Barcelona conceived one hundred years ago by the talent of the Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Mon-taner. The book shows the beauty of the original Palau, without ignoring the new facilities and latest restorations, directed by the architect Òscar Tusquets. The writer and art critic Robert Hughes provides the keys to understanding its aesthetic and architectural importance.

Catalonia is a thousand-year-old nation, which has been enriched by the passing through and contributions of very diverse cultures throughout its history. We find the same richness and variety in its landscape, a very heterogeneous mosaic bordered by the Pyrenees, the Delta del Ebro and the gentleness of the Mediterranean. The book proposes a trip around the Catalan counties, with the inten-tion of transcending the usual and commonplace spots. The book includes a county map of the region to make it easier to understand.

An in-depth look at the Mediterranean Pyrenees, where the cul-tures of both Catalonia and France converge. The presence of four protected natural parks in the region is a guarantee of its biodi-versity. A landscape full of towns such as Cotlliure or Cadaqués, which inspired the paintbrushes of Dalí, Derain and Matisse. Its wide-ranging cultural interest —which includes the Greek-Roman site of Empúries, the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes or the Mod-ern Art Museum of Ceret— is an example of history accumulated.

Published on the occasion to celebrate the 10th anniversary since the Casa Batlló was first opened to the public. Casa Batlló, sym-bolism and construction, a reference text by Bassegoda preceedes the new interpretations of the Casa Batlló made by the experts Santmartí (Director of the Gaudí Professorship) and Giralt-Mira-cle, within the context of Gaudí’s creativity. The extensive and pre-viously unpublished photographic vision of Pere Vivas, Ricard Pla and Biel Puig is complemented with historical photographs and a collection of plans and sketches.

This book is a photographic trip along the coastline and to unknown corners of the Costa Brava, which Jordi Puig suggests to us. His images are the result of twenty years of walks looking at and photographing the beauty of the landscape, the water and the rock, in this ductile strip, between the green and the blue. In the preface of the book, the writer Narcís Comadira informs us: “[…] the Costa Brava still exists and we can still think of it as par-adise and as referent, it is alive in its most authentic landscape, that which touches the sea […]” Jordi Puig has made a record of it.

Only a group of islanders mad about the islands could have concocted a book like this. The extraordinary photographs by Sebastià Torrens of the wildlife and landscape of Majorca, Minor-ca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera, sometimes so delicate and other so striking, are a manifesto in favour of conserving a beauty that only human stupidity would dare to destroy. And Rayó, Pons, Serra and Vidal Ferrando, with their poetic texts that emerge as the fruit of their radical status of islanders, allow us to share and admire the deep and unconditional love they all feel for the Balearics.

It is unquestionable that the mecca of the city for both the people of Barcelona and visitors alike is La Rambla. Without realising it, the walker walks down La Rambla over and over again, sometimes simply crossing from one side to the other, other times walking more slowly, or rambleja, strolling… This book suggests rediscov-ering La Rambla, from both the historical point of view and that of its urban and social singularity, by means of a profuse selection of historic and current images, very often of unknown interiors or dif-ficult to reach spots, of the avenue par excellence of Barcelona.

Roses, a coastal town close to France, has become one of the most common destinations in Catalonia. Its landscape forms part of the Parc dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà and the Natural Park of the Cap de Creus. Throughout the 20th century, the small fishermen’s village has been transformed into a tourist centre of great inter-est, where the gastronomic creations of the chef Ferran Adrià have materialised.

Salvador Dalí turned the Empordà landscape into a symbol of surrealism. The Catalan painter’s work is inseparable from his birthplace. The best evidence of this we have in the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the house in Portlligat and the castle in Púbol. Three sides of the triangle in which a large part of the brilliant artist’s daily life took place.

The photographer Lluís Casals and the novelist Félix Bayón guide us through a journey around the medieval city of the Alhambra of Granada, one of the masterpieces that Muslim culture erected on the Iberian Peninsula. The richness of contrasts of light and water, the colouring and exquisite ornamentation of its palaces, gardens and courtyards make it a pleasure for the senses.

Mies van der Rohe gave a master class in modernity and style with his German Pavilion, built for the International Exhibition of Bar-celona of 1929. The architect distilled his “less is more” concept to create this singular space of light and shade, glass and marble, air and water. This monographic work describes it to us in all its plenitude.

The lands of Catalunya Nord, the part today in France, the Bal-earic Islands, Andorra, the Franja, the strip between Catalonia and Aragon, País Valencià, the Principality of Catalonia and L’Alguer form an extremely important linguistic, historical and scenic herit-age. Despite this, their differences and singularities give each part an attractive and powerful personality. A carefully-chosen selection of texts by diverse authors linked to the lands accompany the most poetic, special, popular, symbolic and cultural settings. The lands written in words are also, in this case, the lands written in images.

Besalú is one of the best-conserved Romanesque towns of Cata-lonia and one of the most attractive in the Spanish state. Not in vain, in 1966 it was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monu-ment for its great architectural value. A stroll around its medieval streets enables one, among other things, to discover the secrets that the old county capital conceals.

Gaudí’s architecture has been photographed millions of times, but never before in 3D. This not only allows us to discover his works, but to explore their interiors too, while appreciating the proportions of their spaces, the shape of their objects, the mys-tery of their light, and the intensity of their colours or, in short, the magic of Gaudí’s entire output.

At the end of the 19th century Eusebi Güell promoted the con-struction of a workers’ village in Santa Coloma de Cervelló (close to Barcelona). The factory, workers’ houses and in particular, the unfinished church designed by Gaudí, are related to a golden age of Catalan industry in the past. The church crypt is one of the works most appreciated by experts in Gaudí.

Antoni Gaudí arrived at the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca in the winter of 1902 to take on the restoration of a part of the temple. He was helped in this task by the artists Josep Maria Jujol, Joan Rubió and Joaquim Torres-Garcia. Despite the fact his work was highly criticised, due to the elimination of some traditional ele-ments, the result is startling and challenges the passing of time.

Touching the sky with the hand presents us a fun and rigorous explanation of the keys to understand and enjoy these ephemeral and fantastic constructions which, besides being an expression of the Catalan cultural identity, are also a metaphor and reality of brotherly work and of the sense of continuity within the community.

The architectural work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner culminates in the Palau de la Música Catalana, a Modernist jewel and musical centre of Barcelona since 1908. If its façade is stunning, the con-cert hall, with its curious structure of temple and theatre, is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Tarragona, the ancient Tarraco, was the first Roman city outside Italy. The trace of the classical civilisation is perceptible in its walls, towers, forums, circus and amphitheatre, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Today, however, above all, Tarragona is its human heritage, the culture and festivals, as worthy of recogni-tion as the stones.

Roses, a coastal town close to France, has become one of the most common destinations in Catalonia. Its landscape forms part of the Parc dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà and the Natural Park of Cap de Creus. Throughout the 20th century, the small fishermen’s vil-lage has been transformed into a tourist centre of great interest, where the gastronomic creations of the chef Ferran Adrià have materialised.

At the end of the 19th century, Sitges experienced a period of great splendour. On the return of the prosperous traders from America, the disembarkation was joined by Modernist artists. Since then, Sitges has become a cultural, leisure and tourist pole of attrac-tion. The current presence of museums and festivals keeps it at the head.

The Dalí Domènech family were one of those which, in the early 20th century, liked to take portraits of each other. This is shown by the large number of photographs appearing in this book. All these pictures place us in the first twenty years of the artist and provide us with clues about how, gradually, the personality and talent were forged of who later on would be considered one of the grand masters of universal painting.

Salvador Dalí turned the Empordà landscape into a symbol of surrealism. The Catalan painter’s work is inseparable from his birthplace. The best evidence of this we have in the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the house in Portlligat and the castle in Púbol. Three sides of the triangle in which a large part of the bril-liant artist’s daily life took place.

A magical atmosphere flows around the streets of the most ancestral Girona, concentrated around the Call Jueu, the Jewish quarter. The city, crowned by the spires of the cathedral and the church of Sant Feliu is reflected with pride and majesty in the waters of the River Onyar. Centuries of history have not stopped Girona becoming a modern capital, full of attractions for the pas-ser-by as is shown in the pages of this book.

Casa Masó is the house where Rafael Masó (1880-1935) was born, one of the most important works of his architecture and the only one of the iconic houses over the river in Girona that is open to the public. The house still has all the furniture and decorations from the noucentista times and offers some unique views over the city. The book, besides a tour around the inside of this house, also includes articles on the history of the Masó family and the works this architect did on his house.

On Ibiza and Formentera, for centuries truly isolated islands, a cuisine was formed made with seasonal products and based on the Mediterranean trilogy: wheat, wine and olive oil. Prepared with local products, and which luckily still conserves in its essence, its own gastronomic philosophy. A true item of World Heritage, as all the local cuisines of the world should be declared.

The beauty of its landscapes and natural spaces, as well as its historical, cultural and gastronomic legacy, make it one of the jewels of the Mediterranean, declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco in 1993.

Madrid possesses two souls: the modern and the traditional, the bold and the pure. Town and Court, capital of the arts and learning, the city that has reinvented itself over throughout the centuries. Today it once again stands out as innovator with the buildings on Paseo de la Castellana, Sanchinarro viewpoint or the multicultural nature of the Lavapiés district.

Granada was a land of fusion long before the global village existed. The Islamic district of Albayzín, the Jewish district of the Realejo and the beauty of Mudejar art bear witness to this richness of cultures, which culminated in the Alhambra and the Generalife. Almería, with its aridity, will seduce the traveller. The landscape is both epic and romantic, making life here hard but pleasant. Along the coast, the ochre land and deep blue waters embrace at every cliff and every beach. This is a unique spot in Europe.

Toni Vidal (Menorca, 1934) is an artist of photography who has developed a body of work of great expressive beauty resolved with a great command of the technique. Since he began he was a portrait-ist of people, and soon also rocks, rural architecture and plant-life. The result of this later work is the book Vestits de ceba. This visual and expressive metamorphosis that the photographer offers us is strengthened with the collaboration of more than twenty poets who have provided Toni Vidal with their poetic creations expressly for his “Vestits”, such as Narcís Comadira, Miquel Desclot, Joan Brossa, Maria Mercè Marçal…

Isabel Núñez takes us along a personal tour of the city with a particular combination of a search for beauty, a strong criticism of speculation and destruction, irony, and nostalgia, which is not of the past, but of lost innocence. And stuck in these itineraries, whether they are a fabric of imagination or vibrant, is literature, her own and that of others, as the infinite carpet of storytellers. The illustrated prologue by Javier Mariscal adds another way of looking at Barcelona, equally passionate but definitively different, maybe more evocative, drawing a fine line of convergence.

Gaudí’s buildings soon became symbols of a Barcelona that dreamed of being European. The postcards of the time quickly reveal the progress of these architectural advances. This book compiles, with scientific rigour, 135 postcards published in the period in which Gaudí was working, spreading Gaudí’s work around the world along with the intimate messages of its senders.

Josep Maria Cañellas was a Catalan photographer with a French spirit and training. He worked in bohemian Paris at the end of the 19th century, spe-cialising in photographing mod-els, artists and street scenes. In 1880, he made a series of photos about the villages and landscapes of Empordà which, without intending to, turned him into a pioneer in contemporary social reporting.

From 1941 to 1958 Dalí designed a collection of jewels associ-ated with Ertman and Alemany, two jewellers who had settled in New York. In 1999, the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation decided to purchase it and put it on display in some of the rooms of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. We present the book Dalí Jewels, a carefully edited and detailed edition including texts by Dalí himself on his jewels.“When designing jewels, as in all my art, I create what I love”. Salvador Dalí

From what is known as the Dalí triangle, the castle of Púbol is the most austere and is linked to the last creative stage of the art-ist. It is the place Dalí offered to his dame, as a tribute. A place of isolation, evocative of the past, with a proustian atmosphere, in a search for a lost world, and subjective projection.

Among the coves of Cap de Creus stands the secret refuge of Sal-vador Dalí and his muse Gala. It is a unique residence, full of sur-prises and untypical decorations constructed by the unbounded imagination of the genius. It is a journey to the very heart of the artist in a magnificent natural setting, which inspired the majority of his masterpieces.
