Taking that belief a step further, the Scran- ton Chapter of UNICO National, the larg- est Italian-American service organization, will host a charity bocce tournament to ben- efit the V Foundation for Cancer Research on Saturday, June 27, at the courts at Arcaro and Genell’s Restaurant, 443 S. Main St., Old Forge. Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m., with play beginning at 9 a.m. According to the United States Bocce Fed- eration, after soccer and golf, bocce is the third most participated-in sport in the world and is considered the oldest known sport in world history. Bocce is a traditional Italian game that is played on natural soil and asphalt courts 90 feet in length and 8.2 to 13.1 feet wide. The game itself begins when a team throws a small- er ball, the pallino, from one end of the court into a zone 16 feet in length, ending 8.2 feet from the far end of the court. Once the pallino is in place, the teams are given the opportunity to bowl with the bocce (Italian for “bowls”) by throwing them with an underarm throw. Scores are determined based on how far the boccia lands from the pallino when thrown. The team with the closest boccia to the pal- lino is the only team that can score points in a set and the scoring team receives points for each of the bocce that is closer to the pallino than the closest boccia of the other team. Sets change when the bocce do not land close to the pallino or when the team has used up all four of its allotted bocce. “Bocce is an easy game to play, all ages, male or female can play,” said tournament co-chair Jim Baress. “This is going to be a fun day, full of good fellowship, camaraderie and friendship as well as a day to celebrate Italian heritage and culture while raising money for a very worth- while charity,The V Foundation.” The V Foundation for Cancer Research was named in honor of the late Jimmy Valvano, the former head basketball coach at North Caroli- na State. The foundation has raised more than $130 million since 1993, with many proceeds earmarked for pediatric cancer research. An- nually, UNICO National grants $50,000 to the foundation. This year’s grant will be donat- ed in memory of Mike Pisano, a past national secretary of UNICO National who died from cancer earlier this year. Tournament costs are $25 per player or $100 per team or $20 for spectators, all prices include meals and beverages provided by Ar- caro and Genell’s. Awards will be presented at the end of the tournament. Walk-ins are wel- come but reservations are suggested by calling Baress at 570-241-1060 or Chris DiMattio at 570-348-4921.
