From our Rector

………….The Rev. Jeannie Martz

This last Christmas, my older son Ian and his family gave me what I considered a rather unusual gift: a DNA discovery kit from Ancestry.com.

(Was it some kind of a maternity test? I really am your mom, sweetie – I know, because I was there.) (And did you give your dad one of these too, and how loaded a question is that??? He was also there!)

In addition to being unusual, the gift was also a little embar-rassing because I grew up knowing that I’m half Scottish (my dad’s parents were Henry Moncrief McLaren of Dundee and Elizabeth Jean Dingwall of Dingwall, both born in Scotland, then spending their adult lives in Canada), a quarter Bohe-mian (my mom’s dad arrived at Ellis Island from Bohemia at age three with a name I can’t spell, and departed Ellis Island as Frank Adams), an eighth Danish (my mom’s grandmother was Dagmar Jensen, straight from Denmark, married to Charles Odenbaugh from somewhere in Massachusetts), and the remaining eighth, from said Mr. Odenbaugh, a German/English mix that included a Massachusetts farmer named Thomas Kent who fought in the Revolutionary War.

Did I or my parents not mention these folks along the way to my sons, whose father is 100% German/Canadian?

Well, as we moved into the new year my attitude improved for a couple of reasons. First, when I shared my mixed feelings about this gift with the Friday Bible Study group, it turned out that I wasn’t the only one who had received the test kit under the Christmas tree, and the general feeling among the other recipients was excitement and curiosity. Okay, I thought, I can go with this.

Then, when we started receiving the results – much later than anticipated because, the company said, of the unexpectedly high volume of saliva samples received in the first weeks after Christmas – THE popular gift, obviously – it turned out that my son had “spit into the tube” too. The gift he’d given me he also gave to himself, out of curiosity and as a result of the excellent marketing work of Ancestry.com.

I don’t know if Ian has since invested in any of the Ances-try.com add-on programs, of which there are many. He may have because he was a little bummed that the results of the basic kit didn’t go into as much detail as he had hoped, and the add-ons would certainly help.

I haven’t signed up for more because my test results said that I’m 50% Irish.

Hmmm. No offense meant to anyone in the parish who’s of Irish descent, but I’m a McLaren whose ancestors are Scot-tish Highlanders hailing from the Braes of Balquhidder – horse thieves (but in a good way, I’m sure), and supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie at the ill-fated Battle of Culloden against the English crown (1746). (Unlike most of his troops, BPC survived the battle to live a long and philandering life on the continent.) Just saying.

Even so, I guess our DNA says that we’re all Gaelic under the Celt!

So why mention this as we head into the July 4th week-

end?

Because tonight after the national news I saw a really cool Ancestry.com commercial on TV. It’s also on YouTube, and I encourage everyone to log on and watch if you haven’t already seen it. (Just go to “YouTube” search, “ancestry.com commercial declaration of independence”.)

Drawing from both the preamble and the conclusion of the Declaration of Independence, a room full of ethnically di-verse men and women, as well as a child or two, recite – in close up – many of the words that we know so well, in-cluding “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. As the camera draws back, the grouping of individuals mirrors the classic artistic rendering of the Declaration’s signing.

And then, as the voices fall silent, the camera draws fur-ther back and the following words appear: “Everyone we’ve assembled here is descended from a signer of the Declaration of Independence.”

Very cool – and, I thought, very stirring.

Both as a Canadian and as an American, I’m a total mutt in a nation of mutts – but as so many people say, mutts make the best pets. :-D

Have a glorious Fourth of July, everyone!

While traveling in Hawaii, the Robinsons visited All

Saints’ Episcopal church in Kapa’a, Kaua’i. All Saints’

members include generations of families dating back to

the very first service held in the church, as well as

those who have made Kaua'i their home in more re-

cent times. They are also blessed with an extended

family of visitors who return year after year. They also

attended Grace Episcopal Church while in Lake

Havasu.

Cindy Nelson traveled back to Michigan and attended St. Jude's Episcopal Church in Fenton, Michigan. It was The Day of Pentecost. This is the church where she was baptized and some of her mother's ashes are in the memorial garden. She attended a class reunion in Holly, Michigan and also visited the farm where she grew up. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane.

While up in Portland, the Barrows attended Grace Episcopal Cathedral which is the Diocese of Portland’s main church.

The Book Club will be meeting on Saturday July 8th. This month the group will review Before the Fall by Noah Haw-

ley. They will be meeting in the Library from 9:30am - 11:00am. Come join them for a truly enjoyable morning, and

some lively literary discussions. A synopsis follows:

BOOK CLUB

On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a pri-

vate jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only

survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely

wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work? A storm of media

attention brings Scott fame that quickly morphs into notoriety and accusations, and he scrambles to salvage truth from the

wreckage. Amid trauma and chaos, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy grows and glows at the heart

of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, morality, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

SOUTHWEST COMMUNITY CENTER NEWS

As many of you may know, Trinity volunteers have been faithfully preparing and serving lunch once a month to the homeless population in Santa Ana at Southwest Community Center. For over 30 years our parishioners have sup-ported this essential ministry. One of the main-stays of this program has been Mary Robinson, who is now contemplating “hanging up her apron.” Her service, smile and delicious tuna salad can never be replaced, but we need new volunteers to guarantee that this ministry con-tinues for another thirty years. We appreciate every single one of you!

If you are interested in serving or would like more information please contact Ann Walker at [email protected] or 714-496-0571.
