130 Years

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Last Sunday’s Gospel reading was all about prayer and praying. In essence, the reading implored us not to lose heart in our prayers when we don’t feel they are being answered. Perhaps easier said than done when we live in a world of instant gratification. We have become used to not having to wait. Even the shortest delay in connecting to the internet or in our travels can send our emotions into overdrive. It is hard to be patient and yet that is what the Gospel is asking. Our prayers will be answered but perhaps not in the manner we were expecting but in a way that tells us that Jesus is close to us.

Author, Helen Steiner Rice has written many verses that reflect communication with God. Included here is one titled ‘Prayers can’t be answered unless they are prayed.’ Don’t lose heart, keep offering prayers and keep the communication channels open.

Life without purpose is barren indeed—There can’t be a harvest unless you plant seed,

GRADUATION DAYIt seems a long time ago now but in the last week of Term 3 our Year 12 students completed their classes with their Graduation Mass and Prizegiving. It was a great day. We had an excellent Mass with a very relevant homily from Father Nicolas and the whole student group combined in a prayerful and purposeful manner.

The second part of the day involved a short prize giving function where many Year 12 students were recognised for their consistently excellent effort and results in their studies. A less formal assembly followed in which various groups within the College farewelled our Year 12’s and our Year 12 representative reciprocated with sincere gratitude. A real sense of community was evident. The finale of the day was the guard of honour for our Year 12 students formed by all students and teachers in the College.

HSC EXAMSThis defining event for our Year 12 students started last Thursday and will continue for about a month. We wish our students every success in these exams and hope that the work and preparation they have done corresponds to their eventual marks.

2016/17 STUDENT LEADERSAt this Friday’s assembly our new Student Leaders will be commissioned. It will include our incoming College Captains, Ministry Captains, House Captains and SRC members. Over 40 students will hold a Leadership role and I am sure they will look to their families and their classmates for support in their work. Leadership camps and other initiatives are being planned.

MORE CAPA EXCELLENCE.In the last Lantern I was able to acknowledge the achievements of some of our Year 12 Drama students. Today I can acknowledge one of our Dance students, Carly Wardell (yes she was in the Drama list too) who has been nominated for CALLBACK.

CALLBACK is a selection of outstanding performances in HSC Dance and Carly has been nominated for her Core Composition, Core Performance and Major Study Composition. Great result for Carly and teacher Ms Unwin.

SJS BUILDING PROJECTOver the holidays, fences went up, jack hammers brought down walls and dust clouds filled the air. The project was finally started and SJS library and staff study are empty shells. With the demolition aspect of the project essentially completed our builders, Greg Clark Building, can now start the construction phase. The plans look excellent and I am sure that once completed both the library and the staff study will be places of teaching and learning of which we can be very proud.

MARIST CRICKETEvery few years Trinity is the host school for the week-long Marist Cricket carnival. This year the carnival runs from Tuesday, 6th December until Tuesday, 13th December and we need help to accommodate the students by having Trinity families billeting two boys from one of the visiting teams. Our Sport Co-ordinator, Mr Barlow, has further details located in this Lantern and I encourage you to read it and consider being involved. As an incentive to be involved, the billeting families will be included in a raffle for a $500 discount on College school fees for 2017.

PEER SUPPORTMany skills and processes that our young people need to become independent have to be explicitly taught to them. Last week in Peer Support, students investigated the skills of critical and flexible thinking. These skills allow them to gather information, brainstorm possibilities and think logically to plan and make decisions. This knowledge is transferrable and applicable to most situations in their lives during their school years and beyond. The highly effective strategy of taking a break was also discussed last week. The world around us, even our own lives are moving so quickly and constantly. Our young people rarely have down-time as they go from school to extra curricula activities then home to school, work or to a part-time job. Even when they seem to be sitting in one place they may be on computers or phones connecting with their friends. This constant stimulation can make it difficult for us to think clearly about effective and sensible ways to respond to and manage the challenges we face. It is crucial for your child to have an outlet, an activity they enjoy, to let off steam and gain clarity. This may be something simple like walking the dog, kicking a ball, going for a run, reading, playing or listening to music.

YEAR 9 CAMP AND PEER LEADERSHIP TRAINING - WEEK 4 The students were spoken to on Friday last about the activities that will be conducted over the course of the week. It is looking to be a very exciting time for our Year 9 students that will undoubtedly lead to the further development of some transferable skills which will assist students, not only in their time here at the College, but for their lives in general. Parents of Year 9 students are reminded that the due date for the submission of all relevant forms has past and I would ask that you attend to this as a matter of urgency. SRC - Bus Shelter

Acting Assistant Principal - Middle School

Over the past couple of years, Trinity’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has been working collaboratively with the Lismore City Council to establish a form of shelter adjacent to the PCYC/TSC Car Park. It is with great pleasure that the SRC can announce that our proposal has been successful and the car park waiting area is now sheltered. This will give our students an area to sit and wait, whilst providing shade and protection from unpleasant weather conditions.

As an a SRC, we would like to thank our past Mayor, Jenny Dowell for supporting us in this proposal and providing this sheltered area. We would also like to thank the previous SRC for their efforts towards this initiative, in particular Mr Travis Lyon for his contributions in regards to the communication with the Council. The incoming SRC appreciates the foundations laid and looks forward to continuing to make positive changes to our College for the benefit of our students and staff.

YEAR 7 TO 10 EXAM BLOCKYear 7 to 10 will have end of semester exams from Monday 21st November until Thursday 1st December. This exam timetable will be distributed at the beginning of Week 3.

LISMORE YOUTH OF THE YEAR PROGRAM

Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster, and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities. It is open to any student who will be between the ages of 15 – 19 on 30th June, 2017. It involves attending an interview with Lions Club officials, and a presentation on a topic the student chooses.

This is a fantastic opportunity to practice interviewing and public speaking skills, an experience that may one day aid in seeking employment. There are also prizes for finalists, including cash prizes for State and National winners. The interview round is set for 12th November, and the presentations for 15th November.

For more information or an entry form, students are encouraged to come along to the Jubilee Centre during lunchtime Friday 21st October for an information session with Nicola Barlow (who received a commendation for her entry last year).

YEAR 11 REFLECTION DAYYear 11 began Term 4 with their Annual Reflection Day. The day was held at the Alstonville Baptist Church which always proves to be a perfect location for our College Reflection Days. The Day was facilitated by members from Marist Youth Ministry (MYM) Team led by Br Greg MacDonald. Their program focused on our Year 11 students transitioning to Year 12 and therefore the leaders of the student body here at Trinity.

The themes covered throughout the day were Leadership formation for the whole year level, being inclusive of everyone and Servant Leadership in the context of a Catholic school using St Marcellin Champagnat and Venerable Nano Nagle as role models. The underlying theme of the day was our school motto of “In Word and Deed”. Year 11 was reminded of the mission and vision of Trinity that originates in this simple statement and the role they, as members of this community, play in making it a reality. It is through the simplicity of our school motto that everyone who is a part of Trinity are able to aspire to continual improvement in all aspect of College life.

My thanks to the students for their engagement and participation on the day. I also extend my appreciation to Br Greg and the MYM Team as well as the Trinity Staff who assisted with the smooth running of the day.

YEAR 8 REFLECTION DAY – WEDNESDAY, 2ND NOVEMBEROn Wednesday, 2nd November, the Year 8 Reflection Day will take place. It is being held at the Alstonville Baptist Church, Alstonville.

Mr Luke Miller and Mrs Clare Axman will facilitate the day. Year 8 Tutor Teachers will accompany the students on the day. This year’s Reflection Day will introduce students to the Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) Program. CSYMA is a school-based Youth Ministry program offered to students in Years 9 and 10 here at Trinity Catholic College. It aims to inspire and equip schools to become centres for faith formation and service opportunities. The Reflection Day will take up the CSYMA theme of “Catch the Wave” which is an introduction to what CSYMA offers students. The day is designed to be both interactive and reflective. Following the Reflection Day students will have the opportunity to nominate to be a part of the program in 2017. The day is also an opportunity for our students to reflect on their year so far and provide insights as to how they can make the most of the remainder of the year in line with our College motto of “In Word and Deed.” This is a compulsory school event for all Year 8 students.

Science News

Mr Ferderer’s Year 7 Technology classes have finished their study of the ‘Built Environment’ and have produced some excellent bedroom models. They used recycled A4 paper boxes for the foundation, paper and card for the wall coverings, felt and recycled fine loop carpet for the floor coverings. Some even displayed exemplary hand sewing skills to make soft furnishings; curtains, bed spreads and pillows. Also lots of scrap timber from senior wood classes was used to make bedroom furniture which would be normally sent to the tip. The students learnt about scale, measurement, ergo Gomes and how to use a variety of materials and tools in this task.

BRIGHT PINK LIPSTICK DAYOn Friday, 23rd September, Trinity Catholic College celebrated Bright Pink Lipstick Day. The College community were invited to wear their brightest pink lipstick to raise awareness for those living with breast and ovarian cancers. The campaign enables the organisation ‘Pink Hope’ to invest in critical lifesaving programs and support services for those living with breast and ovarian cancers.

A pink treat stall was held on SJS during recess and lunch as well as a photo booth to take some beautiful photos with our bright pink lipstick! I want to say a special thankyou to my Year 9 helpers who

assisted with setting up, organising, baking & running the stall with me at recess and lunch.

The amount of funds raised on the day was a whopping $888.85!

Drama News

Festa Christi is a gathering for selected Year 8 students from Parish Secondary Schools in the North of the Diocese to celebrate their faith at a Diocesan level.

The Gathering will be a chance to bring students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate with other young people who practice their faith. The activities will be a mixture of large and small sharing groups as well as celebrating the Eucharist together. The program has been geared to meet the needs of these Year 8 students. The gathering will be an overnight experience which will allow relationships to be built with other students from throughout the Diocese as well as a chance for students to talk and share about their faith journey. What: Festa Christi – a youth gathering for students from every Parish school in the Northern Region of the Diocese.

When: Thursday 3 November – Friday 4 November 2016

Where: Camp Koinonia, Evans Head

Cost: Nil. All transport, food and accommodation expenses will be met by the Catholic Schools Office.

In discerning which students might participate in this retreat experience, the CSO has recommended the following criteria;

• Core Catholic students 1. Regularly attend Mass; 2. Are involved in some other form of Church involvement either at school or in the parish

• Students who exhibit the following attributes: - initiative, - common sense and - a mature character.

A large number of students have already expressed an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer a limited number of places (gender balance where possible). Any student who would like to be considered is asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination on the information sheets provided by Mr Luke Miller or available at the front office. Attention should be given to the stated selection criteria. Nominations should be handed to Mr Luke Miller no later than Thursday, 27th October.

Be your Best is an incentive program to encourage all students to be the best person they can. Each fortnight teachers are asked to notice students who are displaying the focus quality and to distribute about 4 tokens to each of their classes. The focus qualities change from fortnight to fortnight cycling through; Being Respectful, Being Responsible, Being Reconciling, Being Just and Fair and Being Hopeful. All of these comprise the values that we nurture in our students within our classes.

When students receive a token they place it in the Token box at the office of their Head of House. Twice per term, each House makes two draws from the Token box and those whose tokens are drawn are awarded a $20 canteen voucher. The tokens are all kept and on the last day of the school year, 5 tokens are drawn from all the tokens collected throughout the year, with the lucky owners winning an iPad each.

2016 AUSTRALALASIAN MARIST CRICKET CARNIVAL

In December this year, Trinity is hosting the Australasian Cricket Carnival.

At present we are looking for host families to billet two male students (minimum) from various Marist Schools across Australia and New Zealand.

If interested, you would be required to host a minimum of 2 male students fom Tuesday, 6th December to Tuesday, 13th December.

We require approximately 40 billet families to assist for the duration of the Carnival.
