Dear Parents,

The importance of a sound working relationship between home and school cannot be underestimated, here at Trinity our aim is to be welcoming and approachable. I encourage parents to keep the school informed if there are circumstances within your family that may be affecting your child. We can offer support, make allowances for your child if required, and possibly channel families into appropriate support networks.

At times there may be some difficult moments throughout your child’s school life. I encourage you to talk to your child’s teacher as the first port of call, their role is to support the children in their grade and they are your child’s best ally. It is important to come to these meetings cognizant of the fact that you will have only received one perspective of the incident and be open to hearing a different version of events. Teachers are very busy at the beginning and end of the day, and whilst they are available for a quick chat, they do not have the time for lengthy discussions. Please be aware that you are welcome to make an appointment with school leadership at any time.

Take A Walk In Their Shoes

A very good friend of mine, Will, has a disabled son, Mark, who is now in his twenties and achieving very well in life considering the challenges he faces daily. It is a sobering experience to sit and talk to Will about the difficulties he and his wife have faced raising Mark over the years. Trinity Catholic Primary School is committed to providing an education that develops the whole person.

We believe that the social, emotional, moral, spiritual and physical wellbeing of our students

is pivotal to student health, safety, learning and success.

When I see Will and catch up as to how Mark is travelling along it always causes me to reflect on how lucky I am to have three healthy children. I also reflect upon how important it is that as a Catholic school we cater for all needs of all children and assist these families. Within the Trinity student body we cater for all children with all different types of needs and requirements. Their development is as important as any other child. Before we cast judgements upon others I would encourage you to pause and try and walk a mile in their shoes.

Grade 5 Camp

Last week the Grade 5 students enjoyed an excellent camp at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort. They enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each other and the staff better as well as challenge themselves on activities such as the giant swing, canoeing, raft building (and testing), giant water slide, circatron, mini olympics and an initiative course. It was a pleasure to be away with these students, their attitude and behaviour was wonderful. A huge thanks to Sarah Cammarano, Brooke Farrelly, Emma Lamb, Lisa Wans, Kathryn Pepper and Romalie Sooriyabandara for attending the camp. It is a big effort to leave their own families and their interaction with the children and willingness to go over and above to ensure the students had an enjoyable camp was second to none.

Grade 6 Canberra Camp

Early on Sunday the 4th of March our Year 6 children will be boarding the bus and heading off to Canberra Camp for the week. The students need to be at school at 6.30am. During their stay in Canberra the students will enjoy many learning opportunities such as; Parliament House, Old Parliament House, The War Memorial, Questacon, The Electoral Commission, The Institute of Sport, The National Gallery, The National Museum, High Court of Australia, The Mint and various other camp activities. Rima Darwish, Brooke Farrelly, Ellie Gubbins, Emma Lamb, Kathryn Pepper, Ange Schinck, Glenice Shortal and I are the staff attending. Again I thank them for their effort to leave their own families and attend the camp. Emma Lamb is the teacher in charge.

Edmodo on Camp

When on camp the first priority of the staff is always the duty of care to the students and it is a responsibility that we take very seriously. As a staff member on camp you are responsible for the students the whole time and it is important that we are extremely vigilant. Finding time during the day to upload to Edmodo is very difficult for staff as they cannot use their phones when actively supervising, the internet access can be problematic and throughout the day staff need to be busy involving themselves with the students.

Commencing with our upcoming Year Six Camp staff we will now only upload to Edmodo of an evening when there is adequate time available. This will give parents a window into what the children have been up to during that day. Please also be aware that if you post a comment it is not possible to read all of these to the students due to the limited time available.

Not all schools have an option such as Edmodo available to parents for camps and it is not something we wish to take away, however, I ask that parents are reasonable in their expectations of what teachers are capable of whilst away on camp.

Family Learning Conversations

Our Family Learning Conversations commenced yesterday and continue tonight. The staff are enjoying the opportunity to meet with parents to discuss your child’s testing results and learning goals for the year. If your interview is tonight please allow enough time for your child to take you on a tour of their learning area either prior to, or after, your conversation with the teacher.

Life Education Van

The Life Education Van remains onsite at Trinity for the rest of the week. Life Ed teaches children about how to live a healthy lifestyle and make positive choices as they are growing up and developing. All grades will visit the van over the period of its visit and follow up work is completed back in the classrooms. I thank parents for your cooperation in manoeuvring around the van whilst it is in the carpark area.

New Website / Hapara / Oliver – Library Borrowing System

It is with pleasure to announce that our new website has launched. This website is much more interactive for parents and encompasses links to our new Oliver Library borrowing system, interactive calendar and our Hapara online portal that will be operational towards the end of the term. Head to www.trinitynarre.catholic.edu.au and explore. A big thanks to Georgegina Nettleingham and Liz Jones for the enormous amount of work they have put in to bring our new website to life. Carnival

It is 25 days until our Carnival. The Carnival Committee has done a superb job bringing everything together and it will be an excellent day. Raffle tickets for our Carnival have gone out to all families and wristbands for all day rides will be available for $25 from Monday 5th March. More details will be sent home to all families on Friday this week.

Please head to www.schoolinterviews.com.au school code: t9z2v and assign yourself to an hour and a half of helping on the day. All children will directly benefit from the money raised at the Carnival through the purchasing of ICT equipment so it is important that all families contribute on the day. Staffing News

It is with pleasure that we welcome Mrs Leonie Quick onto the staff next week as an Education Support Officer. She will commence her role on Monday and I am sure that she will be made to feel welcome by all. Due to personal reasons Mrs Jane Faulkner, who was previously mentioned in the newsletter as joining the staff as an ESO, will not be taking up her position.

Foundation Students

Benchmark Assessment testing for Foundation students will be completed today. The Benchmark Assessments provide valuable information about Foundation student’s Literacy and Mathematics knowledge and understandings. This helps to inform teachers to meet the learning needs of the students in their class. As of next week, Foundation students will be attending school on Wednesdays.

No Assembly

A reminder there will be no Assembly on Friday 23 March due to set up for the Carnival.

Simon Dell'Oro

CHOICE THEORY - “Total Behaviour”

Choice Theory believes that behaviours are learnt, by trial and error, matching, mirror and imprinting. Behaviours are chosen in an effort to get what we want (with the exception of shock). All we can control is our own behaviour. We can only persuade or influence others, we cannot control them. According to Dr. Glasser all behaviour is Total Behaviour, and is made up of four components: 1. Acting (e.g., walking, talking) 2. Thinking (e.g., reasoning, fantasising) 3. Feeling (e.g., angering, depressing) 4. Physiology (e.g., sweating, headaching) Glasser states that while every behaviour is made up of the four parts, only two of the parts – our thinking and our acting – are under our direct control. Our feelings (emotions) and our physiology (i.e. – heart rate, eye dilation, breathing, etc.) reflect and/or come into line with our thinking and acting, but we cannot control them directly. Total Behaviour is often compared to a diagram of a car, with the front wheels (those that we directly steer) representing thinking and acting, and the back wheels representing feelings and physiology. Because of this reality, choice theory reminds us to focus on the front two wheels – thinking and acting – as much as possible.

It is by changing the direction of the two front wheels that we change the direction of the car. To change how we feel, we must firstly change what we do and/or think. In order to do this we need to focus on what we can do directly, which is to act and think, and spend less time on what we cannot do directly, which is to alter our feelings and physiology. We must accept responsibility, evaluate our current situation, and decide if and how we will start to change. For example, to change our miserable feeling that has come as a result of a particular situation, we need to move away from the back wheels and work on what we are doing and thinking. This can be as simple as taking a walk, talking to a friend or reading a book, anything to shift the focus from a negative to a positive. We must go on our potentials, not our limitations. We must not dwell on the past, but build from previously learnt strengths.

We are the only ones that can control and change our behaviour.

A MESSAGE FROM CASEY COUNCIL

Well the new year has started, and so have the concerns of our crossing supervisors. Many of them have expressed their concerns about drivers not obeying laws around the crossings, and we would hate for it to result in an injury, or even worse, the death of a pedestrian. Please read the flyer in this newsletter for SCHOOL CROSSING SAFETY.

Please check out our new Website Calendar. On the home page of the website is the link to our new calendar. For notices and permission forms, please click on the event in the date box and the forms will be available for you to print out.
