THE INCREASE OF THE LIBRAIW.

The total number of accessions during the year was 1,519 volumes, 1,446 unbound pamphlets. By purchase 635 volumes were acquired, and by gift or exchange 910 volume , 1,-!46 pamphlets. To these should be added 500 halftone prints of Greek sculpture and over 500 mounted photographs illustrating Greek and Roman art and archreology.

The character of the books purchased does not materially change now from year to year, and as the income does not permit the frequent acquisition of expensive sets or rare works, the titles acquired call for no comment. The following are selected as representative of the range and character of the books now needed in connection with the work "being done in the College:

GIFTS.

The year has been marked by several evidences of interest in the Library on the part of friends of the college. Two new funds have been established, the income from which is to be devoted to practical and helpful uses.

On October 11, 190-1:, the Librarian received from Dr. J. Ewing Mears of the class o£ 1858 a letter, of which the following is an extract :

. ·'If it will be of service to the Library, I shalL be glad to establish a Library Fund for the purchase of such books as may be needed, and especially upon such subjects as would have some relation to Sanitary Science- if it is thought such subjects would possess interest and be instructive to the students of the College. If acceptable, I propose to give an annual sum of :fifty (50) dollars for this purpose during my lifetime and make provision for its continuance by bequest."

Page 7: Trinity College Bulletin, June 1905 (Report of the Librarian)

6

To the Librarian's reply, conveying a cordial acceptance and some inquiries as to details concerning the administration of the proposed fund, Dr. Mears answered, in part :

"It [is] my desire that the collection [shall] be useful, not only to the students of the college, but to the Profes or , Officials, and Medical Profession of the city of Hartford. In order that this may be accomplished, it seems to me de irable that the scope of the collection should be as broad as possible, including, as suggested in your letter, the practical or applied side of the ubject. It will give me great pleasure to leave the interpretation of the term to you and al o to your judgment the selection of volumes treating of the subject from the broadest point of view. I shall be glad if I have made myself clear in the above statement as to what is my intent and wish."

The fund is to be known as " The J . Ewing Mears Library Fund, establish d October 17, 1904." The subject to which it will be devoted is of increasing public importance, and certain sides of it are already being touched upon by .at least four of our departments of instruction, viz., Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, and Natural History. Others are certain to be included in the ncar future. The books acquired through this fund will, therefore, aid our colle()"e work, and in time draw to the Library physicians, engineers, and sanitary expert who are dealing with practical question of bacteriology, water supply, water purification, sewage dispo al, and other subjects connected with public hygiene. The collection will also be a lasting memorial to the distinguished alumnus whose name it bears, and whose wide professional reputation i a source of pride to hi Alma Mater.

On May 10, 1905, the following communication wa received from the Secretary of the orporation:

OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY oF TmNITY CoLLEGE.

HAR1'l!'ORD, CoNNECTICUT, May 10, 1905.

WILLIAM C..illLTON, EsQ., Dibrarioo, TTinity College, Hart-ford, Connecticut.

My dear Mr. Carlton: -I take pleasure in notifying you of the receipt of the following letter by the Board of Trustees at

their meeting April 29, 1905, establishing the following Library Fund:

HARTFORD, CoNNECTICUT, April 29, 1905.

The Trustees of Trinity College, Ha?"tford, Connecticut.

Gentlemen:- I have today handed to the Assistant Treasurer of the College two ( 2) Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Company's Collateral Trust 4 per cent bonds, due 2002, of the denomination of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) each, to establish a fund to be known as the " Robert Hitchcock Canfield Library Fund," in memory of my deceased husband, upon the following conditions :

(1) The principal of this fund to be kept securely and separately invested and not to be used as collateral for any loans or otherwise hypothecated.

(2) The income of the fund shall be used for necessary binding for the Trinity College Library.

(3) To insure the perpetuation of the fund ten per cent. (10%) of the income of each year shall be added to the principal of the fund.

Respectfully,

MRs. RoRERT H. CANFIELD.

Also the following vote of acceptance :

Voted, That the gift of Mrs. Robert H. Canfield be accepted with thanks under the conditions stated.

Respectfully,

P. HENRY WooDWARD, Sec1·etwry.

The importance of this gift will perhaps be best appreciated by a reference to previous annual reports, where the endeavor has been made to describe the great and pressing needs of the Library in respect to binding. The side of a library's work least known to and least appreciated by its public, whether that public be large or small, is its administrative side, which is so largely concerned with the proper care and preservation of the books and the rendering them useful to those who need them.

Page 9: Trinity College Bulletin, June 1905 (Report of the Librarian)

8

Mrs. Canfield's gift is doubly welcome because it is a wise and kindly recognition of this important and too often neglected branch of the library's activities. The preservation of good books is no less important than their acquisition, and if they are acquired without proper means for preserving them permanently, we have but half done our duty as admini trators of the book funds committed to our care. Tl1is gift will materially assist us in performing that duty, and will keep in perpetual commemoration the one whose name it bears and the generous donor who has given it.

Mr. James J. Goodwin of the Corporation has generously subscribed $100- for the purchase of the consolidated Indexes to the first fifty volumes of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. The set of this periodical which Mr. Goodwin presented some years ago is as fine a copy as it is po -sible for any library to acquire, and the Indexes which his kindness now makes it possible to add to the set will unlock a storebouse of invaluable material relating to New England history, genealogy, and biography.

From Mrs. Dr. Ansel G. Cook of Hartford we have received the splendid collection of over 500 photographs of subjects connected with Greek and Roman art and archreology formed by her brother, the late George Morey Richardson, Ph.D., professor of archreology at the University of California. In her letter of gift Mrs. Cook says that " ,the thought that his collection is placed where it will be of use and value in the training of tudents would have afforded him the greatest satisfaction."

The lack of just such illu trative material as this has long been keenly felt by our classical department, and Mrs. Cook's gift has already been utilized to good purpose by the Ptofessor of Greek.

This gift also included a large fragment of an Egyptian mummy case inscribed with the customary hieroglyphical characters.

From 1\fr. E. M. Scudder, '77, we have received $30, and from Rev. R. A. Benton, '64, $2.50, in continuation of their gifts in former years. This has been expended in the purchase of books immediately needed for current work.

Mr. W. H . C. Pynchon, '90, kindly peYmitted us to select

what was desired from the miscellaneous pamphlets and papers left by his uncle, the late Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Pynchon, '41. About 1,000 pieces of material were obtained, among them several early manuscript reports of Dr. Pynchon as Librarian of the College.

A detailed list of all persons and institutions who have contributed books and pamphlets during the year appears as Appendix II of this report.

The following table shows the recent annual increase of the Library, and the total number of volumes at the date of each annual report:

CATALOGUING.

In this matter decided progress has been made. Not only have all the books purchased this year been catalogued, together with the more important ones among those given, but an appreciable inroad has been made upon that mass of "back work " which is every library's skeleton in the closet. Several hundred volumes left uncatalogued in pa t year have now been fully catalogued, classified, and added to the library shelves.

The Hoadley and Pynchon gifts included scores of unbound pamphlets relating to American Hi tory, Biography, etc., which were of great interest and usefulness. To have treated them as pamphlets usually have to be treated, vi.z., sorted roughly and

Page 11: Trinity College Bulletin, June 1905 (Report of the Librarian)

10

laid away for cataloguing in the remote future, would have resulted in their being unused .for years. Accordingly time was found to arrange by subject and catalogue over QOO of them, so that they became usable immediately and many have already proved of service in providing material for college work.

'l' he increased use of the Library has necessitated the temporary cessation of acquiring on a large scale the printed catalogue card is ued by th Library of . Congress. Only about 300 cards have been secured from this source during the year. This matter, however, has been organized in such a way that it can be resumed at any time. As the reclas ification of the Reference Room is now completed, save for a few score folios in the cabinet , the time that in the past ha been given to reclas ifying can in the future be devoted to cataloguing.

The total number of cards added to the Catalogue has been 6,132, an increa e of 4,632 over last year. Of this total, 2,392 were in manuscript or typewritten, and represented 2,294 titles, 3,901 volume . The printed cards added numbered 3,740, and were chiefly for articles in sets treating of many different ubjects, volumes, reports, and docttments of the United States Government, transactions, proceedings, etc.

In addition to the above, duplicate cards to the number of 1,630, representing 2,951 volumes, were written or typewritten for the Shelf List in the Refererlce Room.

BINDING.

As the annual anangements for binding were not made until early in l\iay, a considerable number of volumes are still at the bindery and cannot be included in this year's report. Seventy-nine volumes, chiefly the completed volumes of the periodicals for 190±, have been bound at a cost of $54.40, or an average price per volume of $0.687.

ASSISTANTS.

Mr. W. P. Stedman's previous service of a year and a half with me has enabled him to be of material assi tance in the cataloguing and classifying. Mr. D. W. Grahame, who has had charge of the Reference Room in the evening, has performed with ignal success a ta k requiring both firmness and tact.

Page 12: Trinity College Bulletin, June 1905 (Report of the Librarian)

11

Your kindness in providing at different times extra assistants fro~ the Fre hman class has been the chief means whereby I have been able to make any progress in catch~ng up with the " back work " referred to above. Two of these young men, ~fessrs. Buck and Skilton, have shown that they possess certain qualification for library work which I consider indispensable, and I should be grateful if their services could be continued clming the c,oming year. Mr. Eclenborg, to whom was assigned. one of the Library scholarships, has given ten hours service each week, and ha been employed in making typewritten copies of manuscript cards, and duplicate cards for the shelf list.

CONCLUSION.

On the whole the year has been one in which more work has been clone than ever before and progress has been appreciable in f'<:>Yera l directions. 'fhe, intimate connection between the Library and the ~rve.ral departments of instruction has been extended and strengthened, and the students are realizing more and more that the reading assigned by the professors outside the text-books is a real and serious supplement to the instruction imparted in the classroom, and a part of their work which cannot be neglected without loss of standing. General reading, tha-t is, reading unconnected with prescribed college work, has also noticeably incrca eel during the past two years, and is more common than is, perhaps, generally thought.

The contents of the old library room, some 35,000 volumes, have been examined shelf by shelf, and compared with the shelf catalogue prepared by my predecessors, Professors Barbour and Hart. During the coming year it is planned to bring the above named she lf catalogue up to date by adding to it and cataloguing the books which have been placed in the stackroom since 1900.

The room adjoining the Document Room, hitherto chiefly used for duplicates, ha been thoroughly cleared out, and inexpensive shelving put up along three sides of it. As it was essentially a cellar room and very clark, electric lights have been installed in it. This room now contains all library material on the subject of education, including several thousand college catalogues and other publications relating to the uil.iversities, colleges, and secondary schools of this country and abroad. All

12

this material has been so arranged that the use of .it by the professors is a comparatively simple matter. For several years past it .has been unarranged and inaccessible.

On February 21, 1905, at your invitation, the Connecticut Library Association held it regular winter meeting in the College Library. The principal address was by Professor W. I. Fletcher, Librarian of Amherst College, on the " Future of the Card Catalogue." About ninety librarians from Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and New York were present, and it was generally felt that the ho pitality extended by the College to the Association made the occasion one of the most successful in the latter's history. The meeting was ;:tlso helpful in that it made the College and its work better and more accurately known to a body of persons who are constantly, in their respective communities, being asked for information regarding institutions such as ours.

I beg to express my cordial appreciation of your many personal kindnesses during the year.

All of which is respectfully submitted,

JUNE 1, 1905.

WILLI.Uif NEWNHAM CARLTON,

Librarian.
