2.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES 2.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Council of Trinity Lutheran Church, Norristown, signed a contract with the M.P. Möller Company in

1948 celebrating the congregation’s 100th anniversary and remembering those members who gave their

lives in World War II. The instrument that was delivered was Möller’s Opus 7700, a 3 manual, 83 rank

pipe organ of over 5000 pipes. Design and finishing of the instrument was done by Möller’s tonal director,

John Schleigh, former apprentice and assistant to Richard Whitelegg. That same instrument, with its

Whitelegg scalings and Schleigh voicing, graces this sanctuary today, moved with care from its original

home on Dekalb Street in Norristown. The restoration, curatorship and development of Opus 7700 is a

privilege that we’re proud to bear, a testament to the energy of Mathias Möller, the artistry of Richard

Whitelegg, the faithful ear of John Schleigh, and the celebratory vision of our own congregation 62 years

ago.

2.4 OVERRIDING LITURGICAL PURPOSE Founded in 1848 as a Norristown mission of the Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania, Trinity Lutheran Church is deeply committed to exercising liturgical leadership through principle-driven excellence. Our new sanctuary has been designed with that mission in mind. It reflects our deep regard for early Christian practice while gracefully echoing our Lutheran commitment to constant, intelligent reform. Our 21

st century gathering space is simply conceived, a place whose primary fixtures of font, table and

ambo clearly define our purpose, creating the central axis of the sanctuary. Grounded in the rich soil of our heritage and willing to carry the art of Lutheran liturgy into the future, we weave our seasons together using a diverse pallet of music, environment and movement. The locations of our new altar and pulpit can be easily changed from season to season. Cantors and ensembles may minister from multiple places. The watchword for our new space is flexibility. We intend to select an console solution which will enable and support this overriding liturgical mission.

“You know, as I do, what our friends tolerate throughout Europe. They would sing their hymns

with full voices, but so many of their instruments are thin, harsh, suited for Baroque concerts

and museums, but unable to lead their congregations in full-throated song. Your skill is without

question, though I believe it may be somewhat under appreciated in your current situation.

General Assessment of M.P. Möller Opus 7700

Trinity Lutheran ChurchFairview Village, Pennsylvania

This report by design will be a frank assessment of an instrument that is to be repurposed foruse in the new sanctuary being planned for Trinity Church. It is a given that there are high sentimentsfor this organ's lineage. But the reality is that the organ was altered unsympathetically in its originallocation in Norristown, and then moved to the new facility in Fairview Village. In those two periods oftransition, the organ lost much of its original integrity and is well beyond the point of historicalrestoration. The goal therefore should be to incorporate as much of the organ as possible into a newlydesigned instrument appropriate for the new worship space with the realization that at today's costs, itwill be a substantial undertaking.

With the above in mind, this report will first take the form of commentary and pictures to offeran overview of the instrument's present state as a means of gaining a realistic perspective. From thatfoundation, it then will be possible to offer educated suggestions for how the organ may be renewed tomeet the needs of Trinity Church well into the future.

Present Condition and Installation

It is important, as noted above, to understand that Opus 7700 as it stands has been alteredsignificantly both tonally and mechanically. Regardless of the intentions, the results are questionable interms of mechanical and tonal integrity while still leaving enough of the organ basically unaltered topeel off the layers of change to see a clearer path toward moving it forward into the new building.

The printed stoplist clearly does not precisely reflect the 1948 specification, making it necessaryto speculate on some aspects of its original design. Fortunately it appears that most of the pipework is inexcellent condition and seems to be largely unaltered. The blower is relatively new and more thanadequate for the main instrument; the reservoirs are original and also appear to be in good condition.

Close inspection of the Gallery Organ, now temporarily installed, reveals obvious changes tothe original design, which are outlined herewith:

Great OrganTwelfth 2 2/3 ) origin uncertain; pipes marked as if a part of a mixtureFifteenth 2 ) not used originally at these two pitches. From the windchest it may be inferred that the Great most likely had a Grave Mixture IIMixture IV - a later addition on a separate chest. While a good decision in theory, in practice,

it does not blend with the existing pipework, being much to shrill and harshChimes Original electropneumatic action replaced with one of questionable design

Page 11: TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH M.P. MÖLLER OPUS 7700 …storage.cloversites.com/trinitylutheranchurch5/documents/RFP 1404… · 2014-04-01  · TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH M ... o Keyboards

Swell Organ

This division appears to be in original condition with the exception of the addition of the Trumpet 16', 12 pipeextension, which does not properly match the Möller Trumpet 8 in design or timbre: It should be a broad, rich, undergirding sound, quite unlike the rather unmusical results now heard: Retaining it would be questionable. It is quitepossible, although unknown, that the original organ had a Trumpet 16 playable in the Pedal, but it either was removed orlost. If so, the pipes would have been of much broader scale (relative diameters to length) to properly have carried theTrumpet into the Pedal division. The swell (expression) shades are new to the present building and unreliable in operation;mostly likely they could be used in a new configuration, but new 'engines' would be required.

Choir Organ

Appears to be in basically original condition, but with poor racking that has caused larger pipes to lean. The swell(expression) shades and mechanism are new as in the Swell Organ.

There is evidence of pipes being crushed at the top because of the old, brass tuning collars. New aluminum slidesshould be fitted to all pipes retained.

Two stops have been added to the Choir:Tierce 1 3/5Krummhorn 8Both stand together on a newer chest of inferior design to the original organ. Both are well-intentioned additions, and certainly the Tierce could be retained. An organ of 1948 vintage more likely would have had a much broader Clarinet stop vs. the Krummhorn although there is no evidence that such a stop was in this organ.

The Harp has suffered from having its action replaced, but retaining it would be a very low priority in meeting liturgical worship requirements: It was a period piece of limited usefulness, fully legitimately restored if the original action were intact but also at a high price. (Ultimately digital alternatives would be the best solution for the Harp and Chimes.)

Pedal Organ

Quite unusually, the Spitzprincipal 8 + 4, which is incorporated into the Great windchest, is the only independent pedal stop. The Diapason 16 and Bourdon 16+8 are both downward extension of the Great. Both stops are excellent and stand on their original windchests. An ideal recasting of the organ would make the Diapason 16 independent from the Great Principal/Diapason 8.

Based on this survey, the following statistics are known:Great Organ: 5 stops; 6 ranks + Chimes in 1948; now 7 stops, 10 ranksSwell Organ: 8 stops; 10 ranks in 1948 and at presentChoir Organ: 5 stops; 5 ranks + Harp in 1948; 7 stops; 7 ranks presentlyPedal Organ: 1 stop; 1 rank + extensions Total Stops in Gallery Organ (1948): 19 stops/22 ranks; (2012): 23 stops/28 ranks

The Chancel Organ's disposition is less easily determined because pipes were not accessible, with the exception ofthose noted below. My best guess is that it was about 14 stops/14 ranks playable on two manuals and Pedal.

Building preparations

Without full knowledge of the direction of the planning beyond the display renderings I saw, estimating space requirements of the possible scenarios presented later in this report can be onlysketchy. The limited planning advice I can safely offer in general terms is as follows:

1) If there is sufficient room, and there may not be, I would try to put the organ all on one side vs. dividing. This would simplify the installation and make it unnecessary to route windlines from the blower to two chambers. It also would ensure tuning stability.

2) Regardless, the chamber should be fully open floor to ceiling covered with acoustical cloth, walls well insulated and covered with no less than two layers of 3/4” drywall orother hard material to reflect the sound.

3) While larger pipes are mitred, the chamber ceiling should at least have the potentialto be as close to 16' in height as possible.

4) The space required for the organ mechanism and pipes will depend on the final disposition; new windchests, for example, could be configured to make more efficient useof the space.

5) The Great and Pedal divisions would require about a 10' x 10' space as a rough estimate, again dependent on the final design and layout. (This does not mean that the actualspace would be a strictly 10 x 10: one-hundred square feet is a good working area only; bass pipes, for example can be put along a wall.

6) Again, depending on the intended configuration of the space within the aesthetic design of the building, if there is room, the Swell division could be placed in roughly a 10' wideby 6' deep space within the chamber placing existing expression shades in the opening.

7) Not knowing the real scale of the room, it is very possible that indeed it will be necessarydivide the organ by providing two spaces at least equal to or similar to the Great. The difference in the second chamber would be that it would not be completely open, insteadhaving a solid front with expression shades set into the opening.

8) If the organ is divided, the blower will need to be centrally located and 8”-10” PVC windline run into each chamber.

9) The blower requires 240 VAC, three phase current, which must be controlled by a 24-volt contactor and a 'switch line' run to one of the chambers for the organ system toswitch on the blower.

10) Organ chambers should be properly lighted with fixtures not subject to rattles withplacement to be determined according to layout of the organ itself. Each chamber will require a dedicated 15 amp circuit for the organ power supply as well as several convenience outlets for ease in servicing the organ. If digital stops are added, more circuits will be required according to the system used and amplifier requirements. Finally, the console will need a dedicated 20 AMP circuit with twist-lock plug. Conduits from the console to each chamber would carry a standard Ethernet cable.

Note: Further, more refined information may be provided to the architect to cover any reasonablescenario for an organ installation upon inspection of concept plans.

Harris’ Custom Work

The new Harris Console for St. Batholomew’s Episcopal Church in New York City was built entirely in-house utilizing Harris Precision Products components including almost 300 DK-1 solenoids with engraved heads

and stems, a 34 unit Electro-repulsion tilting tablet assembly, special LED indicator assemblies for the jambs and manual keyboard, five special keyboards fitted with check-pistons and manual thumb-piston assemblies, Swell and Crescendo pedals, straight-style toe levers, toe pistons with both black and chrome heads. The console case is made of white-oak and is fitted with both hand-carved moldings and custom marquetry. Harris utilized it’s laser-engraver to cut over 7,000 individual pieces for this project.

The organ, built by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston, Mass., is the largest pipe

organ in New York City with a total of 168 speaking stops, 225 ranks and 12,422 pipes. J. Douglass Hunt was the consultant for this project and is the curator of organs at St. Bart’s.
