TRINITY SUNDAY

All liturgical celebration, indeed all Christian prayer, is Trinitarian: to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. The liturgical celebration of the Holy Trinity as an “idea fast” finds its origins in the Caro-lingian Church of the eighth and ninth centuries. A votive Mass of the Holy Trinity proved so popular that it began to replace Sunday celebrations. In 920 the bishop of Liége composed a full Mass and Office to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The feast was established for the entire Roman church in 1934. The smallest functional unity of human life is not the individual. Every man and woman, no matter how deformed in spirit or body, exists because he or she was born of the coming together of two human beings. No infant survives without acts of touching and feed-ing which are acts of human relationship. If we exist at all, we exist as the product of some form of human community. We profess that we have been created in God’s im-age. Our self-image is so clearly and relentlessly one of life in community that we can not help but see in the scriptures suggestions and revelations of God’s own life as life for and with the other. Though we will never come to know God as God knows himself, every sign of God’s action in our world leads us to him as a God in interaction. Creation itself is God’s self-expression, the exten-sion of his love to that which is other than himself. God’s ongoing dialogue with creation reaches its cli-max in Jesus who is God-among-us. This Jesus is taken up into the fullness of the Father’s glory and the fullness of their love is poured forth upon us in the gift of the Spirit. Though we falter before the complexity of centuries of theology seeking to understand the unfathomable depths of God, we resolutely form the shape of our faith by praying day after day to the Father, through the Son and in the Holy Spirit. As we mark our bodies with the cross we utter the name of Father, Son and Spirit. So we enter into life with God through baptism. We shall enter into the fullness of that divine commu-nity through the gate of death. THREE IN ONE

Trinity Sunday is one of the few feasts that cele-brates a reality and belief of the Church, rather than an event or person. Today we honor the eternal God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Essentially, we believe that God is one being yet three distinct persons. Most people have a hard time wrapping their minds around this doctrine. Don’t let the word “person” fool you. Person here means “that which stands on its own,” or “individual reality,” and does not mean the persons of the Trinity are like three human persons.

THREE IN ONE

How can the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be distinct from one another yet completely united? Well, think of your eyes: each eye is distinct, yet together they are one and undivided in their sight. Another illustration is a musical chord. Think of a C chord. The C, E, and G notes are all distinct notes, but joined as one chord make the sound richer and more dynamic than if the notes had been played individually. The notes are all equally important in producing the lovely sound, and the sound is lacking and thin if one of them is left out.. Yet again, the Trinity could be compared to ice, steam, and water. Jesus was solid, like ice: he became fully human so we could see him in our world. The Holy Spirit, like steam, is something that cannot be seen, but has great power. The Father is like water, without which there would be neither steam nor ice. However, all of these explanations fall short. The Trinity is a mystery but by the word “mystery,” the Church does not mean a riddle to be solved, but a reality beyond our human ability to grasp. Ultimately, it is a truth we can only begin to know through worship, symbol, and faith. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights re-served.
