D ear Members and Friends of Trinity Cathedral,

With these past three months our days have been filled with frustration as we continue to wrestle with the COVID-19 pandemic with isolation, social distancing, and the wearing of masks. All of this is so against our human nature as social beings. But none the less, it is our love for one another and our safety that is at stake. For you it may be gardening, crafting, being outdoors, hiking, listening to music, reading, or writing. There are many things we can do that enable hopeful and healthy attitudes and behaviors. It is having such routines that are most beneficial.

Speaking of routines, since the pandemic is not just a passing flu bug and will be with us for a while, we have lost our Sunday routine. We have come to the

awareness that we need to be intentional with our offerings in continuing to be a church (though the buildings are closed, our ministries are moving on!) and need to re-establish our Sunday rhythm. PHISHING ATTEMPTS

Phishing Attempts to the office emails (any [email protected]) have been proliferating of late. Please be assured that Fr. William and Rev. Ruth are not asking you for favors or money, and we do not litter our emails with “Blessings.” Check the email address, not just the name, of the sender. That can often be a tip off. Also, be incredibly careful when clicking on any attachments. Thanks for your diligence!

along with hymn singing. The second Sunday of the month will be the Rite II liturgy. The third Sunday will be the 9:00 a.m. Children and Family Service liturgy. The fourth and occasional fifth Sunday will be the Rite II liturgy. I am also offering my adult Bible study based on the weekly scripture reading on either a Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or early evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you would like to sign up please email me, [email protected], and indicate your time preference.

Please continue to join us for worship that God’s Word may give us strength and hope for all the days ahead.

Blessings, Father William+

Glick, and they live in Reno with their dog, Pancho, and two cats. Stephen lives in Philadelphia, PA, and works with Project Home, a shelter serving the homeless.

Judy received a B.A. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Following graduation, she began working for Montgomery County as a Parole Officer. Tom was a Public Defender. “Thus, we met and fell in love!” said Judy. She took a leave from her profes-sional life to raise their two children. Judy became highly active in the church and community during those years, teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, singing in the choirs, receiving organ and piano scholarships, and forming the Sarah Circle, a group of women and their children who provided support to people effected by hurricanes, medical conditions, and poverty.

After their children were raised and left for college,

Sarah Circle became quite a large and diverse group. Judy was the president of this group but had little formal knowledge in leadership. She thought it would be a good idea to go to the local Lutheran seminary to take a course in conflict resolution. Well, one course led to another, and led to anoth-er. Before she knew it, she was studying at the General Episcopal Theological Seminary, graduating in 2012 with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree.

In 2012, Judy was employed as a Hospice Chaplain with Saint Mary’s and continued with them until 2019 when she began working as a Hospice Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator with Eden Hospice.

“It is my pleasure to serve you,” said Judy. “I am most grateful to the volunteers of the Christian edu-cation department, the wardens, The Rev. Ruth Hanusa, Father William, and the church community for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to meeting all of you and being a part of Trinity Episco-pal Cathedral.”

August 2020 Trinity Times

Dear Members of Trinity,

In the June newsletter I wrote about the similarity of the Babylonian Exile in 586 B.C.E. with our time of COVID-19. For those Jews sent into exile, the gut-wrenching de-stabilization and longing to go back to the way things were was met with God’s words to settle down in their new place and to “Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. ...For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” (Jeremiah 29: 7, 11)

There’s more to the story, though. While in exile in Babylon, Judaism began to take on the shape which it still holds today. Without a temple in Jerusalem, synagogue worship developed, Sabbath practices and circumcision became important markers of Judaism, and the books of the Bible began to be collected into a whole. Judaism became portable, and Jews in Babylon thrived–so much so that most of them did not return to Palestine even when Cyrus’ edict said they could.

It’s so tempting for us to notice all the things we can’t do in COVID Time. We can’t go to church, we can’t go mask-less, we can’t go to indoor dining or pubs, we can’t travel to see family, on and on. It takes time to notice all the things we are doing which we didn’t do before COVID. One of these occurred to me recently when I realized that we don’t have to limit our Zoom study groups to just the folks here at Trinity. Even if a topic or author is not popular enough here to get a decently sized group to Zoom about it, we can invite friends and family across the country. I for one never thought about doing that before, but it is a gift we have received in this time. How about a group to study the writings of N.T. Wright, or a book club reading Toni Morrison’s books, or a group discussing movies, like maybe Mr. Rogers? Post-COVID, some things will return to the way they were, some will go away, some will be modified, and some will be brand-new wonderful things we hadn’t imagined before. I’m hoping you are getting your fair share of seeing some of the wonderful new things.

Blessings to you all,

Music Notes from Gary Pilgrim Visits

Dear Trinity, as I begin my fourth official week it is hard to believe that a month has already flown by. Let me say a huge “thank you” for the hearty welcome received and for all of the preparations made before my arrival thus ensuring a smooth transition. This past month has involved setting up an office on the Parish

Hall stage, getting to know the church staff and developing a good working relationship with each person while also observing the “Trinity way” of doing things and making necessary adjustments.

There are exciting musical changes and additions to our August schedule. First, we are adjusting our Thursday Eucharist to a more flexible Service of the Word, which will include readings, hymns and a short homily about the

designated saint or special occasion for the day. Second, our worship on Sunday, August 16 will be patterned after the 9:00 a.m. Children/Family Service. So, you can expect a more informal/family feel this day.

During this time of limited musical activity at the church, please know I am focused on preparing for our return. Working closely with our staff and architect to ensure our renovated seating plan for the chancel actually functions well for our weekly worship needs. I am suggesting a split-choir format—a more historic cathedral approach. I also inherited some structural issues with our pedal pipes along with the task of providing suggestions to the vestry on how to move forward with repairs. Through extensive research and consulting with colleagues across the US, I am also making good progress on this front. Finally, while slowly getting settled at home and learning my way around Reno, I look forward to all the progress we’ll make in month two!

Dr. Gary Gordon, Director of Music & Organist

Pilgrim Visits

One of the traditions of ancient cathedrals was for people to enter into a sacred space for personal devotion and prayer. We would like to offer an opportunity for you to come (with a mask) to the Parish Hall “temporary chapel” for meditation and prayer in a quiet, more personal space. Individuals or couples can schedule an appointment through the cathedral office (775-329-4279). Upon arrival, you, wearing a mask, will be welcomed by a greeter who will have you sanitize your hands, take your temperature, and register you. You will then be lead to the “sacred space” where there will be a prayer desk and chairs for kneeling or sitting for private devotion. A candle will be available on the altar to light for your prayers, as well as a consecrated com-munion wafer for you to take.

When making a reservation, let us know if you wish to have the communion wafer available. There will be no clergy or other people present except the greeter at the door. This is not an opportunity for socializing with others – but personal time with the Lord. After each visit, the greeter will wipe down the chairs and kneeler for the next visitor. And, Communion will be set anew if desired by the next pilgrim.

If you wish to volunteer to be a “greeter” please let Father William know. During the month of August, we are offering this opportunity for members and friends of the cathedral, and especially for those who have stated how much they miss Communion. Be prepared for a different experience. There will be four 15-minute time slots for an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Depending on how it is received, and if we have the volunteers, we may arrange to expand the visits.

Changes in Worship Formats

Thursday Service of the Word for Healing

There will be a change of format for the Thursday Service beginning in August as we continue to stream live and record at 12:10 p.m. The emphasis has always been a service for healing, prayer, and comfort. Our new format will be a Service of the Word with scripture readings and a psalm, as we have been ac-customed, along with the healing prayers. Since we continue to be observing a Communion fast, we felt it best to remove the celebration of Eucharist. Both Eucharist and Anointing are two things we cannot offer virtually, so in place we will continue with the readings, a meditation, prayers, and some music and sing-ing. Our clergy, staff, and vestry believe that offering something new and directed specifically to these times with the pandemic will be a greater source of comfort and support.

Adult Forum – A Virtual Bible Study

Sundays at 9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Beginning with Sunday, August 2, Father William will be offering a Bible Study Class at the traditional Adult Forum Sunday morning time for adults to examine the scripture readings or Gospel assigned for Sunday. By delving into these weekly assigned Scripture Readings, of which the clergy are called upon to preach, we will be able to gain greater insight into the context and meanings of these sacred witnesses and teachings. Such insight can help expand your appetite for grasping meaning from the texts that may speak more inti-mately to your own life and spiritual development. Please familiarize yourself with these bible verses in ad-vance and have your Bible with you when we meet. We will be using the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

The Readings for the weekend of August 2 are:

Genesis 32:22-31 Psalm 17:1-7,16 Romans 9:1-5 Matthew 14:13-21

If you wish to be a part of this study, please submit a request to Father William through email, [email protected], or by telephone, 775-329-4279, leaving a message of your interest along with your email so that a Zoom invitation can be sent to you.

If Sunday does not work for you, I am offering the study on a Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. or from 6:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

Centering Prayer

Centering Prayer meets every Tuesday at 12:00 Noon to 1:00 p.m. via Zoom. If you wish to become a part of this

“gathering” for personal and corporate Prayers, please contact Joan Peyser by email at “[email protected]” to receive an invite for this Zoom Meeting. We are most thankful for this ongoing ministry of prayer and support. Please feel free to join us; we are made up of members of Trinity Cathedral and folks of other traditions and communities.

Social and Ministry Groups

Bible and Books

Bible and Books continues to meet every Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. via Zoom. We are reading The Book of God: The Bible as a Novel by Walter Wangerin, Jr. Rev. Ruth hosts these Zoom meetings and pro-vides some Biblical background support. The group discussions are led by the various partici-pants. If you would like to join us, or you would like more information, email [email protected].

A Lot of Good Men (ALOGM)

We continue to shelter in place and exercise caution in our daily

activities. Pray for all of us to stay safe and keep healthy. Protect your loved ones. Pray for a speedy resolution. Reach out to others as your comfort level guides you. Remember that one of the underlying tenets of the group is to support each other. This is that time. We will return to normalcy once the “all clear” is sounded.

FORWARD Devotional Booklets

Most of you probably remember the Forward de-votional booklets that used to live on the table in the narthex. They are in the cathedral office now, and if you would like us to mail you a copy we would gladly do that. We have regular and large print versions. Just call the cathedral office (775) 329-4279 or email [email protected] and give us your name (and address if you think we don’t have a correct one for you).

Bible 101

If you are interested in studying Walter Wangerin, Jr.’s The Book of God: The Bible as a Novel, but need a different time, day, frequency and format from Bible and Books, Rev. Ruth will be leading a group, via Zoom (what else?) on Fridays at 11 a.m. Beginning on Au-gust 14, this group will meet every other week. How quickly we move through the book’s material will be the decision of the group. The schedule for the rest of 2020 will be:

August 14 and 28 September 11 and 25 October 9 and 23 November 6 and 20 December 4 and 18

To get a Zoom invite, or for more information, email [email protected].

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PART OF THE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS?

Circle of Friends is a group of about ten people who commit to daily check-in phone calls with each other. This is how it works: You are given one name to call. You call this person, usually in the

morning, but anytime is okay, to check in on them--how they are, what’s going on for the day, etc. If for some reason you can’t reach your person, there’s a system in place to do a further check. In turn, you also receive a phone call from someone who checks in with you. Every so often, the leader of the group switches the names around, so you have a “new” person to call and you have a “new” person checking in with you.

If you would like to join this group, contact the leader, Dorothy Walrath, 775-829-0568 or [email protected].

Giving Thanks

From the Daughters of the King

By Carolyn Hoffman

August 2020

The Hildegard Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King continues to meet with Zoom during this time of social distancing. We always pray for each other, for our parish, and for our clergy. We welcome and will be having an Installation Service for Rebecca Dixon during August as she becomes a Daughter within our Chapter. She brings our Chapter to an even dozen Daughters!

At our Provincial level, we are preparing to welcome over 2,000 Daughters within our ten Western states to a Zoom Annual Meeting on August 29. Our theme will be “Empowered by the Gift of the Holy Spirit”.

For our nation we offer this prayer from “Prayers for All Occasions” by Forward Movement. Please pray for our Nation in this time of unrest.

FOR THE NATION

Almighty God, look with favor upon our land and people. All undeserving, you have made us great among the nations of the

earth. Let us not forget that this place and this power have come from you, and that we have them as a trust to use in your service. Save us from pride and arrogance; make us quick to see the needs

of those less fortunate than ourselves, and to be resolute in promoting good will and fellowship among all people.

The Divinely Fine Women

Please reach out to one another for support during these days of isolation and social distancing.

Baby Bundles “Sharing Our Blessings with Others”

We have no scheduled in-person meetings. If needs arise, a member or two will address them. In the meantime keep one another in prayer, as we also pray for the mothers and families that our ministry supports.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Because of the Coronavirus we are not meeting in person. We

will continue to do our work at home and be in touch with one another. If yarn supplies are needed, please inform your ministry leader.

If Prayer Shawl requests are made, individuals will be in touch to determine how requests may be fulfilled.

St. Martha’s Altar Guild and Linen Ministries

The Altar Guild is functioning as a skeletal crew at present since there is a low demand with the two services we are streaming. Father William will continue to express the needs for the various services we will be live streaming to the internet.

If you have any questions, contact Ann Crase, 775-338-6376; Carol Roman, 775-229-3884; Juliette Leneaux, 775-247-7703; or Pat Ikehara, 775-853-7706.

Are you on our Mailing and/or Email list?

Please remember to contact our office at

and provide an updated address and/or phone numbers.

Only you can help us keep up to date records and a current cathedral

directory. Thank you!

Vestry Report

The meeting was conducted by video conference and

opened at 6:10 p.m. with a prayer followed by reading

of the Cathedral Mission

Statement and Sacred Blessings.

The agenda (with adjustments),

minutes of the June 20, 2020

Vestry meeting, and June

Financial Report were approved or accepted.

Treasurer report: Lindsay Campbell reported on behalf

of Treasurer David Morgan who is on vacation. She

noted June is the first month showing a deficit year-to-

date. There were some unexpectedly large expenses

for the second quarter; however, Lindsay explained

these expenses tend to even out over the year. While

revenue is down 15-18%, pledge revenue is 94% when

compared with the same period for 2019. Lindsay also

reported receipt of the Paycheck Protection Program

funds. The wardens presented a revised 2020 Budget

Forecast developed in collaboration with the treasurer.

Terry Cain reported on discussions regarding the

Stewardship campaign including how to communicate

and connect with parishioners to encourage continued

pledging for 2021. The FFA Committee Report: Lynne

Charlat, Junior Warden, reviewed the

recommendations for necessary repairs and

improvements necessary when the pipes and console

are reinstalled following renovation of the sanctuary.

Vestry approved contracts with Sierra Front Group for

necessary technology improvements for the cathedral

offices related to software, internet, and email

services. Lynne also reported the cathedral had

secured a new health insurance plan that included

medical, dental, and vision coverage. She provided an

update on the proposed alternative for the HVAC

system design changes that have delayed the

beginning of the sanctuary renovation. Vestry

approved creation of a part-time staff position of

Christian Education Director

and Episcopal Youth

Community (EYC) Leader

effective August 1, 2020.

Ministry Report: Fr. William reported on the successful

St. Paul’s Food Pantry drop off program which will

continue twice monthly through September. The

current Bible and Books study group continues to meet

on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Dean’s Report: Fr.

William commented on proposed changes to the

current streaming of weekend services. Beginning in

August the virtual services will take place on Sundays

at 11:00 a.m. and will rotate Rite I, Rite II, and family

services. Fr. William will lead a virtual Adult Forum

from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Beginning in September, Sunday School will stream

beginning at 9:45 a.m. Fr. William also commented on

upcoming changes to the format of the Thursday

service. Thursday’s Tell Us What’s Happenin’ and the

Tuesday and Thursday Complines will continue. Report

from Canon for Parish Life: Rev. Ruth encouraged the

cathedral to think more broadly and embrace the new

ways of imagining and doing during COVID-time. She

also announced the launch of a second group to read

and discuss The Book of God – The Bible as a Novel by

Walter Wangerin, Jr. that will meet online during the

week. Vestry: Members were encouraged to continue

the parishioner calls. Feedback is those are

appreciated and valued. Vestry discussed Trinity’s

current online presence, noting the need to update

and improve. Several recommendations were made

and will be considered. Old Business: Lynne Charlat

provided an update on the lack of progress in updating

the current website. Options for moving the project

forward were discussed. Fr. William reported on the

progress of historic designation of the cathedral. New

Business: Fr. William informed vestry he will take

vacation in August. With reluctance, Vestry

acknowledged receipt of Robert Andrade’s resignation

letter as a member of the vestry. Vestry expressed

gratitude for his service on vestry and the gifts he gave.

Vestry voted to leave the position vacant until

elections in December. Jim Lamb, Senior Warden,

noted the completion of the job description for the

Canon for Parish Life as developed by the Dean. The

meeting adjourned at 9:14 p.m. The next meeting of

the vestry is scheduled for August 17, 2020 at 6:00

Folks Ask How We Are Doing Financially: A Response

The clergy, wardens, vestry and staff want to thank all our pledging and non-pledging members for your faithful giving during these days with the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Yes, the church buildings are closed to in-persons gatherings with worship and programs, but our ministries continue to function and grow.

As a new and full staff are now operating, work and plans continue to re-imagine our work and offerings to our members. The Food Pantry drop-offs occur, Bible and Books meet by Zoom, Sack Lunches continue to be served, and in addition we have recreated much to be offered the only way it can be done with these days of social distancing and isolation – virtually. We have the Thursday Healing Service, The Sunday Eucharist, Tuesday and Thursday Compline at 7:30 p.m., and Q and A with Fr. William on Thursdays. We are now add-ing a Bible 101 for Adults, the Adult Forum study of the Sunday Readings, and in the Fall we add the Chil-dren’s’ Sunday School program.

All of these programs are ways for us to continue to be “the Church” and keep one another safe. Because this is the new normal, and our one true and broad option to be connected, we are updating all of our com-puter technology. This is not just to have a more efficient business operation, but to accommodate the chief way we are able to do programming. So our operations continue, expenses occur, and your support is very much needed.

Many folks have turned to the website to do on-line giving. Thank you! Many faithfully and regularly mail in a check. Thank you! Some actually come to the door and ring the doorbell to drop off their pledge or dona-tion. Thank you!

Our pledging membership has faithfully maintained a 94% level of giving! For that we are grateful! Since we do not have in-person worship, the plate offering has dropped about 60%. Our non-pledging members and guests are asked to think about your gifts to the operation of our ministries and are encouraged to give as you are able. Your support is important to our continued service to this community and one another. Please consider giving prayerfully and regularly. Our efforts together continue to bless us all in both our individual giving and receiving!
