Trumpet Ar'cles
February 2019 February 2019 February 2019 February 2019 One of the canonical requirements at an Annual Mee%ng is the rector’s address,
formally the “State of the Cure” report. The full text of my address is available on our
parish website (www.trinitybend.org/sermons/). An abridged version follows:
The state of our parish is solid …
In the U.S., poli%cal heads of state offer a “State of the Union” address. And in a typical
address, the President will affirm that “the State of our Union is strong!”
That seems a hard sell in today’s divided landscape. My job is easier. The state of our
parish is really preAy good. The mood feels preAy energized. Everything feels stable.
The state of our parish is solid.
The state of our parish is solid … with room for improvement
And yet, I’ll add the caveat. There’s room for improvement.
We have a balanced budget, but we aren’t doing all that, in my es%ma%on, we should.
We have not even considered cost of living and/or merit raises for staff this year. We
are not doing our part to support theological educa%on for the wider church. And we
will not be seDng funds aside this year for inevitable capital projects in the future.
As for our parish leaders, we have been blessed richly in recent years. I inherited a
couple of wardens who had to oversee the rebuilding a church. Joan Wellman and
Karen Hauswald stepped into their very large shoes, filling them exceedingly well. We
all owe them a debt of gra%tude. And I thank them, as well, for their care and support.
But now it’s %me for a changing of the guard. And it’s neither fair nor reasonable to
expect volunteer Wardens to assume a (full or) part-%me job. And so I think it’s the
right %me for us all do a re-set this year. Accordingly, the new Wardens and I, working
with the new Vestry, will be very clear to scale our expecta%ons back to something
manageable this year. It might take some geDng used to. Stay tuned.
We are Trinity: ROOTED … OPEN … GROWING
A picture’s worth a thousand words. In that vein, I shared some images of exemplary
moments for many of you at this year’s mee%ng. Photos illustrated what it means to
find our roots here at Trinity and what it looks like to open ourselves to others and God.
And then we looked together for signs of green and growing things in our common life.
For in addi%on to whatever business comes before us at an Annual Mee%ng, it’s best for
us to take a moment to celebrate the life we share.

Members of Trinity Episcopal Church, Bend, met on Sunday, January 27, for the 2019 Annual Mee%ng. The canons of
The Episcopal Church require this mee%ng for the purpose of repor%ng on the life of the congrega%on and for elec%ng
new leadership for the coming year(s). Copies of the wriAen report will be available from the church office. An
electronic version can be accessed through our parish website @ www.trinitybend.org.
Rector’s Address
Father Jed offered his report on the “State of the Cure,” to use the slightly archaic language of
our canons. In his report, he shared his sense that the state of this cure is solid … even as he
went on to acknowledge there’s s%ll room for improvement.
In words and images projected on a screen, he offered reflec%ons on the graphic image he
shared last year (see right). The photos he chose were suggested by members of the
congrega%on who responded to his invita%on to recall life-giving experiences of Trinity. The
whole congrega%on engaged in discussion thereaNer!
Elec'on of the Vestry and Wardens
The terms of three members of the current Vestry come to an end at this Annual Mee%ng: Jim Allen, Julie Lear, and
Donna Young. In addi%on, JeanneAe Beeger is resigning. The congrega%on offered thanks and apprecia%on for them.
A Nomina%ng CommiAee was established last fall to fill these vacancies. They presented four nominees, three to fill the
vacancies for the “class of 2022” and one for the “class of 2020.” They are Bill Carrington, Greg Hedger, Paula Pyron (all
for three-year terms) and Mark Williams (for a one-year term). Biographical statements were shared prior to the
mee%ng and re-printed in the wriAen report. These persons were unanimously elected.
In addi%on, Suzanne Brady was appointed during the past year to fill a mid-year vacancy. Her elec%on was ra%fied.
Father Jed announced that, in accordance with parish bylaws, he has appointed Deby Welch to serve as Senior Warden.
In accordance with those same bylaws, the Vestry has elected David Depew to be the new Junior Warden. The Annual
Mee%ng formally voted to approve that elec%on.

Wardens Reports
Joan Wellman offered her final report as Senior Warden. Her comments were
generally upbeat, beginning and ending with words of gra%tude. The members
of the congrega%on offered their thanks to her.
Karen Hauswald similarly offered an encouraging word about the efforts she’s
helped support as Junior Warden. She, too, was thanked by the congrega%on.
Amendment to Parish Bylaws
Two amendments to the parish bylaws were presented to the Annual Mee%ng,
having been previously reported in the January issue of The Trumpet. Both of
the amendments relate to func%ons of the Treasurer/Finance CommiAee and
the Vestry. The intent was for our bylaws to conform with current prac%ces at
Trinity, as well as the canons of the Episcopal Church as a whole.
The congrega%on voted to amend Ar%cles 10 and 15, as specified.
Treasurer’s Report
Bill Brisson, as Treasurer, chairs the Finance CommiAee, which serves as an
advisory commiAee to the Vestry. His report covered parish assets and the
opera%ng revenue and expenses from 2018.
The budget for 2019, adopted in its final form by the Vestry at its January
mee%ng, an%cipates a small surplus of $356. This budget was approved by the
Annual Mee%ng.
Bill ended with words of thanks for members of the Finance CommiAee,
including special thanks for the new Assistant Treasurer, Terri Rahmsdorff!!

Topic: The SACRED
FREE. ALL ARE WELCOME
Marianne Borg and Bill Ellis will “con%nue the conversa%on,” Saturday February 9
th from 9:00 – 11:30 am. This month’s
conversa%on topic is THE SACRED.
A common dichotomy in religion has been between the sacred and the profane or secular. The sacred being powerful
and awe inspiring, transcending the humdrum of everyday life. The profane being everything else. This strong dualism
was long considered to be a universal in religion. But it isn’t. We will explore our understanding of the sacred, how it
can redirect a life posi%vely or coercively, and reflect on the importance of how we see and why.
No previous experience necessary. (You do not need to know anything about Emile Durkheim or Mircea Eliade!) Come
join us, whether this is your first %me to our conversa%on or you are returning. We look forward to being with you.
Please follow the links at www.trinitybend.org to find the registra%on page so we can provide adequate sea%ng and
refreshments.
The January mee%ng of the group was cancelled due to ice on the
roads — the next mee%ng now is scheduled for Wednesday,
February 13, at 10:30am.
Thank you, members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry for your
generous giNs of %me, resources, and caring support to this
Ministry in reaching out to touch those who are facing challenges
and could use some good cheer, a ray of hope, warmth, and
comfort.
Un%l then, please keep on kniDng, crea%ng these prayerful giNs
of grace in our shawls! May we all have a blessed Holiday Season!
We have a wonderful assortment of shawls appropriate for both
men and women ready for giving.
If you know of someone who might like this prayerful giN of support, please contact for more informa%on: Anita

All are welcome to experience the Trinity Labyrinth, which will
be available on Saturday, February 16th
and Sunday, February
17th
between 9 AM and 3 PM in the sanctuary of St. Helens
Hall.
The ancient paAern has been imprinted on canvas and provides
an opportunity to walk its circuit. The labyrinth can become a
metaphor for our journey through life, touching our sorrows and
our joys. It can be a help in quie%ng the mind as you walk the
path.
All Trinity Women are invited to aAend the 2019 Women’s
Retreat “On Holy Ground.”
If you are new to Trinity, or just “exploring” you are invited to
join us! This will be a wonderful opportunity to make new
friends, recharge your baAeries and refresh your spirit.
The Retreat program “On Holy Ground” will explore the four
elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire and how our experience
with these elements influences our spirituality.
The program will be led by Helen Keefe of Sisters, Oregon. Helen
has a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies, a Master’s degree in
Social Work and is cer%fied in Spiritual Direc%on.
The weekend will include %me for discussion, worship, centering
prayer, spiritual direc%on, crea%vity and quiet reflec%on.
If you love to sing, you can join the Retreat Choir. The Choir will
rehearse during the weekend of the Retreat and will sing at the
Eucharist on Sunday morning. No prior singing experience necessary!
The Registra%on Form is available on the Trinity website and can be
dropped off or mailed to the office. We will also set up a
Registra%on table in Brooks Hall every Sunday in February.
For more informa%on, please contact Cris Craig at (360) 689-7810 or
Gail Webber at (914) 263-9063. If you would like to sing with the
Retreat Choir, please contact Sue McWilliams at (541) 419-2357.

February is sign up month for those who desire to par%cipate in the Meal and Conversa%on
Groups.
This is a social small group that meets only for three %mes during the months of March through
August. Each group is comprised of six people, either couples or singles, for lunch, dinner,
picnic in the park or whatever meal you want. The hosts prepare the main dish and the others
bring side dishes.
Each month a different host/family also provides the venue. If the host has room, they are
encouraged to invite an addi%onal person or couple not part of the group.
If you are interested and have ques%ons contact Peggy Ziegler, 541 388-1138 or [email protected].
The sign up board will be in Brooks Hall and on the office counter during February.

Thank you to all who helped make Trinity’s Alterna%ve Christmas a success! Your dona%ons totaled $17,800 and
funded:
• Episcopal Relief and Development ($2,130 with the match): Contribu%ons will help fund projects such as microloans and
training to economically empower women around the world, community health programs to improve the health and well-
being of women and children, disaster preparedness and response efforts both domes%cally and overseas, and animals to
provide sustenance and a means of support.
• Condega, Nicaragua ($1,372): will fund school uniforms, supplies, upgrades to school facili%es, medicines, and some
staffing to Condega’s school.
• Cove/COPY ($7,439): will provide 13 camp scholarships to Ascension School & Camp in Cove, Oregon. Recipients are “at
risk” children, especially those impacted by parental incarcera%on
• Family Kitchen ($2,794): will provide 760 meals. Over 5100 meals are served monthly to our homeless and less
fortunate brothers and sisters right here in St. Helens Hall.
• GiIs for the Christ Child ($4,065): Judy Warren was able to purchase 169 Safeway Cards valued at $25 each and give
them to the Family Access Network (FAN) to distribute to school children suffering food insecurity. The FAN advocate was
astounded that one church had provided over $4,000 to help feed children!
In addi%on, 55 Salva%on Army tree tags were filled and delivered to the Salva%on Army for distribu%on to needy
children and teens.
So many helpers made this project possible. Chuck Johnson, Rick and Sandy Negus, Lee McGee, Terry Rahmsdorff,
Celine Burke, Genie McBurneA and Marie Suhre staffed the Alterna%ve Christmas Table. Jan Stalker helped with
prin%ng the holiday cards. Judy Warren developed the Dona%on Card and purchased and delivered the Safeway GiN
cards. And Julie and Jerry Lear delivered all those bags and bags of giNs to the Salva%on Army.
Santa also received dona%ons from service clubs, home visits, and downtown Bend
appearances. All dona%ons went to Cove/COPY scholarships.
Thank you to Santa’s elves who introduced kids to Santa, handed out candy, and provided
crowd control for liAle ones anxious to tell Santa what they wanted. These helpers included
Owen Litehiser, Cody English, Tom and Shirley Baxter, Paula Pyron, David Childers, and Jean
Bissell.
