It has been several weeks since our Diocese made known its intention to file for bankruptcy (reorganization and consolidation of debt). As I write there are still unknowns. Negotiations are taking place with Jeff Anderson, the attorney representing the victims of the sexual abuse cases. The Diocesan Leadership has put together a financial proposal which includes the selling of property. For clarification, all parish property belongs to the parish and not the Diocese. All parishes are separately incorporated in Minnesota. Furthermore, any monies parishes have invested in Diocesan funds such as the Catholic Foundation or the Investment and Loan pool cannot be used in the settlement. Negotiations are taking place with the insurance companies to determine their contribution to the victims fund. Diocesan Leadership is hoping to file for bankruptcy before the end of the year. When the Diocese does file for bankruptcy, an agreement will be in place with the victims. As part of the bankruptcy process, all parishes were asked to participate. Of the 131 parishes about 30 were named in lawsuits (no parishes in our cluster) and they will participate in the settlement. All parishes were offered the legal services of David Runck of the Fafinski Mark and Johnson firm of Eden Prairie. By participating parishes would gain the legal protection of channeling. Through channeling parishes would be protected legally from any sexual abuse claims (by any church employee or volunteer) prior from the date the Diocese files for bankruptcy. Parishes are not mandated to participate. Participating parishes will share legal fees (Around $1,000 per parish. Final costs will be determined by the number of parishes participating. Each parish participating has paid a $500 retainer fee to start the process.) and make a free will contribution to the victims fund. The amount given to the fund will be determined by each parish. As I write 104 parishes have agreed to join the process. In our cluster, both St. Wendelin and Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parishes are joining the bankruptcy process. MIC Parish Council has authorized a gift not to exceed $5,000 to the victim fund. St. Wendelin has not determined an amount to date. Both parishes felt is was worth the protection from any possible past claims and as a way to express their support of the many victims.Holy Cross parish council decided not to join the process since there were no claims against the parish and that numerous parishioners had voiced a concern not to assist the Diocese for errors of judgement by Diocesan leadership.May Spirit guide the bankruptcy process and more importantly may healing to the victims and their families. On a lighter note, some of you may remember Ascension Thursday. In many parts of the world the Ascension will be celebrated on May 10th, 40 days after Easter. Several years ago the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops gave regions the option of moving the feast of the Ascension to Sunday. The move to Sunday was made due to the fact that in many places the travel burden for priests was great. Our province which includes all of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota elected to move the feast of the Ascension to the Seventh Sunday after Easter. Peace and blessings on your Easter Season! Fr. Ron

Holy Cross School Have you had the opportunity to meet our tutor, Kaila Schmitt? Kaila spends her days at Holy Cross, working oneonone, with our students who have been diagnosed with Dyslexia. Each of these kids meet with Kaila once a day.
