PROCESS OF SELECTION APPLICATION DEADLINE March 10, 2015 OTHER DETAILS Morning Tour: Murin-an Afternoon Tour: Silver Pavilion Evening:Daimonji Summer Festival Selection will be based on a letter describing why he/she wishes to participate. The letter should: 1. Explain how you are interested in Japanese gardens, 2. Whether you are planning to stay in Japan before or after the workshop, 3. Describe a plan for securing funding for the trip. We expect to have approximately 10 participants in this workshop. Proposals should not exceed two single-spaced pages of narrative. The proposal must also include (not included in the two-page limit): a CV with address, phone number, fax number, email addiress, passport number, and educational background. Proposals should be submitted to Dr. Seiko Goto by 4:30 p.m. on March 10, 2015. Electronic submission is required (Word documents acceptable; PDF preferred). Send the proposal to [email protected]. Applicants will be noticed of the result no later than March 20, 2015. If you have any questions about this request for proposals, please e-mail Seiko Goto ([email protected]). Applicants are highly recommended to take online course “Japanese Garden within Cultural Context” offered by Rutgers University in spring 2015. Because of weather conditions or other reasons, the itinerary of the garden tour many be subject to change. 3. Participants must have valid passports. 4. Participants must cover their own expenses. 5. Participants must purchase their own airline tickets. 6. Participants must purchase their own travel insurance. 7. Participants must arrive at the designated hotel by 9:00 p.m. on Aug.9th, 2015. 8. Participants must stay at the designated hotel during the workshop. 9. Participants must wear good walking shoes. 10. After the selection, the participants will be provided with more information about climate, appropriate clothing, and any other necessary supplies, the permissibility of photography (videos on the iPhone, etc.). What can contemporary landscape architects learn from the historic Japanese garden? Many prominent American landscape architects have been inspired to create new designs after an encounter with the Japanese garden, which became a turning point in their careers. Japanese garden is unique not just in its design but also its maintenance techniques, which can only be understood through hands-on experience. In this workshop, participants will visit different styles of Japanese gardens, including Shinto shrines, Zen gardens, Tea gardens, castle gardens, and imperial villas, to lean historical background, design principles, and the maintenance techniques and procedures that have kept garden plants in perfect condition for over 300 years. The instructional tours also will include a hands-on garden maintenance workshop with imperial gardeners at the Hikone Castle. Translators will be present at all events.
