The Winterthur StoryNestled in the rolling hills of the historic Brandywine Valley, where in 1777, General George Washington faced Britishtroops in the largest land battle of the Revolutionary War,where a young America rose to global industrial power in theearly 20th century, and where three generations of Wyethshave painted landscapes, Winterthur sits as it has forgenerations, a grand estate like few others in America.
Yet the story of Winterthur is also the story of the du Ponts.French immigrants who arrived in America January 1, 1800,and who founded the highly profitable DuPont Company, they became a dynasty of entrepreneurs, engineers, horticulturists, and collectors. The family pursued manypassions, resulting in exquisite art collections, botanicalgardens, and libraries now enjoyed by the American public. From 1839 to 1969, four generations of du Ponts calledWinterthur home.
The Winterthur of today is the living vision of collector andhorticulturist Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969), whoopened his childhood home to the public in 1951. Theexhibition galleries and 175 rooms of the house showcase aworld-renowned collection of 90,000 antiques and decorativearts objects made or used in America between 1640 and 1860.The Winterthur Garden, called the greatest naturalisticgarden in North America, sits within a majestic thousand-acre estate. Its striking succession of seasonal blooms delightsvisitors year-round, while Winterthur’s superlative researchlibrary serves scholars from around the world.
As an academic institution,Winterthur proudly sponsors twograduate programs in conjunction with the University ofDelaware: the Winterthur Program in American MaterialCulture and the Winterthur/University of DelawareProgram in Art Conservation.
We invite you to visit and explore this exceptional place ofbeauty, history, and tradition.
