DNV’S ENVIRONMENTAL & ENERGY EFFICIENCY RATING SCHEME FOR SHIPS

Triple-E™

DNV SERVING THE MARITIME INDUSTRY Triple-E™

Page 2: Triple-E - DNV's environmental & energy efficiency rating scheme for ships

The Triple-E environmental & energy efficiency rating scheme for ships has been developed in close cooperation with the industry, to provide ship operators with a well-documented tool to improve organisational performance, identify ways to minimise the environmental impact and, ultimately, optimise the fuel consumption and thereby reduce cost.

A Triple-E rating will further enable a ship operator to prove environmental responsibility and demonstrate energy efficient operations. This can be used in branding of the vessel and the company’s environmental performance.

It is anticipated that, in the future, vessels with a docu-mented environmental performance will also qualify for incentive schemes and other related initiatives from ports and local administrations.

DNV’S ENVIRONMENTAL & ENERGY EFFICIENCY RATING SCHEME FOR SHIPS

■■ Triple-E helps ship owners and operators stay at the forefront with regarding to green shipping rules and regulations

■■ A vessel with a Triple-E rating demonstrates active environmental management and energy efficient transportation of goods, which has been verified by an independent third party

■■ Triple-E focuses on factors that can be influenced by the ship owner and operator, thereby facilitating a process of continuous improvement

Triple-E is a voluntary environmental rating scheme for ships which provides a rating from 4 to 1 (where 1 is highest), based on an independent verification of a ship’s environ-mental performance. Triple-E provides ship owners and operators with a self improvement tool to prepare for emerging rules and regulations and to brand themselves as environmental forerunners.

In order to build confidence into a ‘green tag’, the information required for Triple-E is based on reliable and verifiable facts. Hence the following key parameters have been chosen as fundamental elements:■■ Environmental management systems in place and implemented

■■ Energy efficient operation as part of policies, action plans and daily operations

■■ Energy efficient ship design■■ Verifiable monitoring, measurements and documentation schemes

Triple-E is a highly transparent service, giving a thorough and detailed picture of a vessel’s and a company’s environ-mental performance and standards.

Triple-E has been successfully used by tanker, container and ro-ro ship operators.

The steps towards a Triple-E rating for one or more vessels in a fleet are:■■ Contract ■■ Client’s self-assessment■■ Verification by DNV■■ Issuance of a ship specific Triple-E rating declaration

Upon signing a Triple-E contract for one or more vessels, the client is given access to Triple-E guidelines, supporting documents and tools needed to carry out the self-assessment. DNV will later verify the results of the self-assessment through a Triple-E verification in the client’s office and on board the vessel as considered necessary.

Based on a successful verification, the Triple-E Rating declaration is issued, stating the obtained rating for the given vessel. The Triple-E rating is also published on www.dnv.com/triple-e. Renewal or upgrading of a Triple-E rating is voluntary and can be done at any time.

WHAT IS TRIPLE-E™

■■ A voluntary rating scheme for ships, irrespective of class, age and flag

■■ Applicable for new and existing ships

■■ Has four rating levels from 4 to 1 (where 1 is the highest)

■■ A verification of a ship’s actual energy efficiency and environmental performance carried out by an independent third party

■■ An easy tool to help ship owners and operators stay at the forefront with regard to emerging ‘green shipping’ rules and regulations

■■ Makes use of existing & relevant environmental indicators (supports IMO indexing)

A Triple-E rating is a verification of a ship’s actual environmental performance, and each rating demonstrates a different level of envi-ronmental competence and pro-activeness for a vessel and company: RATING 4: ■■ Heightened environmental performance through a company environmental policy and targets in place

■■ Verified compliance with all current environmental rules and regulations

■■ Reliable operation through quality testing of all fuel used

RATING 3:■■ Systemised environmental performance through an implemented Environmental Management System

■■ Clear energy efficiency targets through an established Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and calculation of an Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI)

■■ An environmental awareness survey completed with training needs and improvement areas identified

RATING 2:■■ Sustained environmental performance and improvements docu-mented through a certified Environmental Management System

■■ Minimised emissions to air and optimal fuel efficiency through an implemented Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and an Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI), moni-tored over time to document performance

■■ Verifiable fuel oil measurements and an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM)

RATING 1:■■ Leading environmental performance through operational risk assessment and enhanced crew competence levels

■■ Minimised environmental impact through state-of-the-art ship and equipment design

■■ A verified Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)

Triple-E has four rating levels – 4, 3, 2 and 1 (where 1 is the highest). For each of these levels, there are requirements within the areas of management, operation and design. To reach a specific rating level, all the requirements stated for this rating level and the levels below it have to be complied with.
