This schedule worked out very well for us, we flew to Xinyang where Steven waited for us. All travel between sites was with Steven’s car and from Sanming we went by high speed train tot Shanghai. We were very lucky with the pheasants at Emei Feng, and since it was extremely quiet with other forest birds, we decided to add another stop further south for a better chance at Necklaced Partridge. In our initial schedule we didn’t plan on visiting the Sanming area and had another day at Emei Feng which I would recommend. This trip could be extended by doing more justice to the coastal

sites (Nanhui, Rudong, Yancheng, Minyang estuary) – see Van der Spek et al 2017. This would add a chance for e.g. Relict Gull, Saunders Gull, Red-naped Crane etc.

There was only one species we really dipped out on: Short-tailed Parrotbill is possible at Wuyuan and in the Sanming area where we put in quite a lot of time (and taping) to find it. Another species we searched for is Spotted Elachura (family tick) but this is also very difficult if it isn’t singing in winter.

Other birders

We met quite a few Chinese bird photographers, especially in the hides but didn’t have any interaction.

Practicalities

Guiding

We were expertly guided by Steven An (www.chinadreamstour.com, [email protected]). He has guided/birded this route a lot so knows all the sites like the back of his hand, knows his birds but most importantly is a very nice person to be on a trip with. He tried his best to make the trip as pleasant as possible. Catering for a western style breakfast as needed, but when he noticed we quite liked our noodles and dumplings for breakfast and spicy food for lunch and dinner he made sure the food was one of the highlights of the trip.

Literature We mainly used the Birds of East Asia (Mark Brazil) during this trip which is also available as an iBook on iOs-devices. We also brought the Birds of China (MacKinnon), which was useful for a few species in our southern stop (Chinese Barbet). For sounds we downloaded a selection from Xeno-Canto.org. In preparing the trip we relied on tripreports found on www.cloudbirders.com especially those of Van der Spek 2017, Schlick 2017, Campbell 2017, Grundsten 2018).

Eating & Sleeping

Steven had booked all the hotels in advance, but was able to change them when necessary which we did a few times. All rooms had some form of heating and/or a heated blanket and we were never cold during the night.

• Dongzhai: Baiyun Village hotel – simple but clean and very close to the birds. • Wu Cheng: ? – simple but clean. • Nanching: Plush hotel. • Wuyuan: Blue Bay hotel - Plush city hotel • Emei Feng: Cabin at top – simple and clean, but without any running water. Steven warned us in advance that

this would be the case and offered to stay in Tanjing which would add some driving time but we decided to stay up there to be closer to the birding sites.

• San Ming: plush city hotel • Shanghai: Nanhui Holiday inn.

The food was one of the highlights of the trip, with delicious breakfast (dumplings, noodles) and lunches and dinners everywhere. Steven came prepared for a western palate with oatmeal, bread and jam for breakfast, but we switched to Chinese style breakfast soon enough.

Weather It’s winter, so bring warm clothes, hats, gloves etc. But on our last day we experienced 22 Celsius and sunshine so bring a t-shirt too. This winter was apparently quite dry and quite warm. We only had frost on the car twice. But even with temperatures above zero a wait in a hide or standing on a windy rooftop can be plenty cold. We only had some rain on one afternoon, but this seemed exceptional.

Health and safety Nothing of note. Do not drink tap water unless it’s boiled.

Money The ATM’s we found at Shanghai airport didn’t work for us so we exchanged some euros for yuans to buy coffee at the airport. Since everything on the trip was covered we didn’t need any more cash so didn’t try any more ATM’s.

Costs International flight tickets Amsterdam - Shanghai: 830 euro per person. The tour package costed us 2400 euro per person (but this price was based on a package without a birding guide). The flight from Shanghai to Xinyang and the highspeed train back to Shanghai were also part of the tour package.

Visa Steven provided us with an invitation letter to obtain a visa for China. Since 2 persons count as a group we applied for a group visa which cost less, and can be done electronically without sending in your passport or visiting an embassy, the papers are delivered by courier a week before the trip.

Visited Sites We took a few GPS points of sites and specific birds, those are available here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1F12P99BBCUmrPO0e0FpEdcp1EgDJNMkk&usp=sharing . Dongzhai Around Dongzhai there are two main birding areas: the forest of Donzhai Nature Reserve and the open fields and ponds around the nearby villages.

Dongzhai NR: Main target in the forest at Dongzhai is the Reeve’s Pheasant. Winter is the best time to see the pheasants, when food in the forest is scarce which means that at dusk the birds tend to come out into the open areas. There are 2 big hides (both can fit +/- 50 people), each overlooking a large clearing. The first afternoon when we arrived we tried the left hide (gps 31.9534, 114.2526). We arrived around 4.30pm and it was rather quiet with birds. Only when it was already very dark a group of 7 females Reeve’s Pheasants came out to the clearing. We then received the news that from the other hide (gps 31.9556,114.2545) two male pheasants were seen. We hurried to the other side but when we arrived only one female was present. The second afternoon we tried the right hide. After an hour waiting the two males arrived again, giving a real show. What a stunning birds! We also tried one morning for pheasants along the road (driving and scanning slowly), but without any luck. Not sure about the costs of the hide, there’s a guy during the day for payment and directions. Besides the pheasants the reserve has some nice forest birding to offer. The first morning we walk a trail (start at 31.9487,114.2548) to an old hide. This was a very nice walk and we encountered some good bird flocks along the way (tits, thrushes, etc). Two times we flushed pheasants but they very quickly disappeared. When we were almost back at the start of the trail we found 2 Silver-throated Bushtits in a flock of Black-throated bushtits.

Fields and ponds around villages: From 10:00 – 15:30 we birded at several fields and ponds in the broader area. Collared Crow is relatively common here and was quickly found. For the Crested Ibis we scanned several fields, and then we found 2 birds sitting in a tree at 31.8859,114.2365. Later we found a few more birds foraging in the ponds along the road. At least one of these birds was not ringed and probably hatched in the wild and not in the cages (..) During the afternoon we made some more stops; with nice groups of buntings (Rustic, Little and Yellow-throated), several woodpeckers, our first Grey-capped Greenfinches and some waterfowl this was a nice afternoon. We tried

Page 4: TripReport: Eastern China - Penguinbirding...We mainly used the Birds of East Asia (Mark Brazil) during this trip which is also available as an iBook on iOs-devices. We also brought

one area where Steven sometimes finds Meadow Bunting but we did not encounter any. A Bull-headed Shrike was a welcome bonus here (31.9681,114.2806) – which near the Crested Ibis breeding center.

Target birds Reeve’s Pheasant, Crested Ibis, Collared Crow, Silver-throated Bushtit

Poyang Hu Poyang Huy lake is a very large lake where 99% of the entire population of Siberian Cranes spends the winter. We had 2,5 days to explore the total area; we started in the north at another small lake (Dong Hu Lake) for Baer’s Pochard and then slowly moved from north to south along the Poyang Lake, stopping at various points to scan for cranes and other waterfowl.

Dong Hu Lake: After a full morning driving from Dongzhai we reach Dong Hu lake (gps: 29.70668,115.7395) which is the know stakeout for wintering Baer’s Pochard. The lake is busy with waterfowl and among the many Tundra Geese, Swan Geese and Common Pochards we find around 150 Baer’s Pochard. From here it was still over 2 hour drive to reach Wu Cheng where we spent the night.

Around Wu Cheng: Our first stop is at 29.1780, 115.9880 just outside the village where we found the first White-naped Cranes. We then drove to the other side where we found more cranes; the first group of 30 Siberian Cranes, many Oriental Storks and 2 Hooded Cranes (scanning from here 29.1475,115.9879). A bit more to the south there is a recently build visitor centre from where the birds where even closer (29.13801, 115.98236). On the other side from the visitor centre there also is a newly built platform (29.13948, 115.97363) – but birds were very far away here (due to low water levels).

Around Nanjixiang: We continue further south where we find 2 more Baer’s Pochard (28.9063,116.2671) , also a group of Chinese Penduline Tits shows well here. After lunch we successfully tape in a Marsh Grassbird in the same area (spot known by Steven) and we find a Brown-cheeked Rail (gps: 28.9165,116.2834). We end the day in a field with several Thrushes and Buntings (28.8900, 116.2363).

Wangluo lake area: The next morning (after spending the night Nanching) we continue further along the lake. At 28.7557,116.3069 we made our first stop near the lotus fields and busy with many Siberian Cranes. Also Chinese Grey Shrike is seen here hunting from the nearby wires. It turns out one of the biggest photography hides for Siberian Cranes is close by where they put extra food on the fields to attract large numbers. From a distance we can see it is very busy in the hide and since we have seen them very well by now we decide to move on. Following the dike along the river we find more Common cranes and groups of Swans and Geese. We then search the fields for Japanese Quails but without luck. We are more successful with Chestnut-eared Buntings (quite common around here 28.7296,116.2905).

Target birds Baer’s Pochard, Siberian Crane, White-naped Crane, Hooded Crane, Swan Goose, Oriental Stork, Marsh Grassbird, Chinese Penduline Tit.

Not seen: Japanese Quail, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Baikal Teal, Swinhoes Rail (reported in winter in Poyang Hu but very difficult)

Wuyuan

There are three main birding spots around Wuyuan that we visited: In and around the village of Xiaoqi (for Pied Falconet), at the bridge over the Le’an River at Kenkou and Moon Bay island.

Page 5: TripReport: Eastern China - Penguinbirding...We mainly used the Birds of East Asia (Mark Brazil) during this trip which is also available as an iBook on iOs-devices. We also brought

Xiaoqi: After arriving in the dark the last evening, we set out with first light to the village that is known as the most accessible location in the world for Pied Falconet. Steven had made prior arrangements for us to ascent to one of the rooftops in the village that has a good view on the regular post of the falconets (gps: 29.3939,118.0261). The birds breed nearby and during winter they usually show up around 7:30 at a few bare branches at the top of the tree. A lot of houses have rooftop facilities for visiting birders and photographers and some of the bare branches are kept in place with extra metal support. When we arrived it was very windy and the treetops where moving heavily. Then the long wait started. It was very cold and for the next 1,5 hour nothing happened. Around 9:30 we were done with the cold and the waiting so we decided to start birding in a nearby valley. There we quickly found a Fork-tailed Sunbird (29.3841,117.9991) and our first of many Huet’s Fulvetta’s. We checked several good stretches of habitat for Short-tailed Parrotbill but without any luck. Then we received a phone call from the house back at the village; the falconets were perching on the branch! We quickly drove back and ran up to the rooftop. When we arrived the falconets had disappeared again. However, this time it was only a 15 minute wait before 2 Pied Falconets suddenly sat down at one of the branches, success at last!

Kengkou (along Le’an River): We arrived around noon at the Le’an River. This is the spot where Scaly-sided Mergansers spend the winter and it did not take long before we spotted the first group of 7 birds in the river (a little downstream from the bridge – gps of bridge: 29.3085,117.8802) . They were very active and did not stay long in one place. After lunch we drove a bit more upstream and quickly found a Long-billed Plover (29.1679,117.8386). Also our first Mandarin Ducks of the trip were present here. We tried a few more places for Short-tailed Parrotbill, but without any luck. However, with a big flock of Grey-headed Parrotbills, a Grey-sided Scimitar Babbler, some Bamboo Partridges that we flush, a male Tristram’s Bunting and our first Indochinese Yuhina’s it was still a rewarding afternoon. The next morning we pay another brief visit to the other side of the river, again no luck with the Short-tailed Parrotbills - best birds are another group of Grey-headed Parrotbills and a Pale-headed Woodpecker (29.1702,117.8398).

Moon bay island: We arrive at Moon Bay Island with first light on our last morning in Wuyuan. This is the breeding spot for the rare Blue-crowned Laughingthrush but during at this time of the year they are all wintering somewhere unknown. In the winter months you can walk around the island which is full of birds in the early morning sunrise. It doesn’t take long before we spot our main target; a group of Yellow-browed Buntings (29.3085, 117.8802).

Target birds Scaly-sided Merganser, Long-billed Plover, Pied Falconet, Fork-tailed Sunbird, Tristram’s Bunting, Yellow-browed Bunting.

Not seen: Short-tailed Parrotbill

Emei Feng

The 16km long road that climbs up through the forest at Emei Feng makes it a very good birding place to find pheasants; with the main targets being Cabot’s Tragopan and Elliot’s Pheasants, but also Koklass and Silver Pheasant are present here along with Chinese Bamboo Partridge and White-necklaced Partridge. From km 6 to km 10 is the best area for Elliot’s and from km10 to the top for the Tragopan.

As is often the case with pheasants the best strategy is driving up and down the road at the beginning and end of the day. We arrived at the start of the 30 min before sunset which give us a good first try. Unfortunately aside from a few Forktails the road is empty and when it is too dark to see anything we continue to the accommodation at the top (gps 27.00613, 117.07267). It is a lovely peaceful place run by a very friendly lady, with the only downside that there is no running water at the time of our visit.

The next morning we start driving at 6:30am – and first drive halfway down to the start of the area for Elliot’s Pheasants occur. There we wait for the first daylight to be just enough to start searching while Koklass Pheasant calls in the distant. The conditions are good with a calm morning covered in some mist. Carefully scanning the roadside and different gullies on each side we drive down. We reach the lower bound of the area without any sight of a pheasant

Page 6: TripReport: Eastern China - Penguinbirding...We mainly used the Birds of East Asia (Mark Brazil) during this trip which is also available as an iBook on iOs-devices. We also brought

and the first worries start to enter our minds (as often happens while searching for pheasants it is very hard to imagine how you will be able to find them looking at the empty road). We turn around and start driving up slowly again. Then Frank suddenly calls out “ There’s one!!” and just a few meters from the car we see a male Cabot’s Tragopan in the left roadside (gps: 27.0265,117.0595). We can follow it as it moves away from us where it stops behind a tree at the side of the road. After a few minutes it even crosses the road giving very good few before it disappears in the dense vegetation. Nice! That was an welcome but unexpected sighting since we are still quite a bit below the area where the Tragopan usually occurs. We decide to keep focussing on the lower half of the road and even drive a bit further down then the last time. It doesn’t take long before we hit the breaks again; this time a pair of Elliot’s Pheasants slowly walks away from us on a small sidetrail giving very good views (gps 27.0307,117.0640). Driving up the second time there is a Chinese Bamboo Partridge in the roadside and when we stop a bit further we see our first Silver Pheasant. Not bad for a first morning! We decide to drive back to the top for breakfast but after another Silver Pheasant we have the best encounter of the morning. A few meters next to the car is a male and 2 females Cabot’s Tragopan and over the next 15 minutes we get stunning views of the male walking just a few meters before our eyes performing some form of display to the nearby females (gps: 27.0103,117.0685). What a show!

The rest of the morning and beginning afternoon we focus on the higher part around the accommodation. It is very quiet with almost no bird activity, let alone any sound or sight of the White-necklaced Partridge that should occur here in the higher parts. We then drive down and up a different mountain road. We find more Silver Pheasant and Elliot’s Pheasants but also here it is very quiet with birds. The plan was to stay here 3 nights but after such a very successful first morning we decide to leave after the second night and include an extra stop at the San Ming area where they recently have a reliable hide for White-necklaced Partridge.

Not seen: White-necklaced Partridge, Black-chinned Yuhina

San Ming area (Jung Feng and Luo bo). This is a bonus stop that we add to the trip when after a full day at Emei Feng we have seen all the pheasants. At is a bit extra driving but we gain very good chances for Necklaced Partridge (at a reliable hide) and Chinese Barbet. The first afternoon we visit the hide and surroundings at Jung Feng and the next morning we spend a couple of hours at Luo Bo before we take the highspeed train back to Shanghai in the afternoon.

Jung Feng: The locals have set up a good hide that is now reliable for Necklaced Partridge (general area of the hide at 26.35172, 117.49008, Steven can arrange access). We arrived after lunch and started waiting in the hide. After 2 hours a got lucky and 2 Necklaced Partridges visited the hide as well as a party of Silver Pheasants. We spent the last hour of the day walking a nearby valley – which resulted in a group of Greater and Lesser Necklaced Laughingthrushes (26.3781,117.4915). At the top of the mountain at Jungfeng both Cabot’s Tragopan and Necklaced Partridge are possible at a hide (see Van de Spek 2017) but Steven told us they aren’t very reliable anymore and Emei Feng is a better bet.

Luo Bo: The last morning of the trip. We drive to an area called Luo Bo where our main target is Chinese Barbet (a recent split). We stop several times along the road when there seems to be bird activity and we walk some stretches where the habitat looks good meanwhile taping and listening for the call of the Barbet. At (gps 26.4352,117.5808) we suddenly hear a response and not much later we find the bird high up above us with terrible light. Luckily it then crosses the road and perches with perfect light at the top of a tree giving good views in the telescope. A Great Barbet in the same tree offers nice comparison. We drive down the road back to the river and try some more for Short-tailed Parrotbill. We don’t find any but there is quite some bird activity making it a good last morning of the trip with Steven (nice finds are another pair of Fork-tailed Sunbirds – 26.4362,117.6238 and a female Tristram’s Bunting). From here we drive to Shaxian where we take the highspeed train back to Shanghai.

Target birds Necklaced Partridge, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Chinese Barbet.

Nanhui We only visited Nanhui less than two hours starting at 06.45. We slept at the Nanhui Holiday Inn express which is conveniently located at (30.8842, 121.9674) for birdwatching and probably is a good site itself during migration. We only visited one path through the reeds (starting here, parking possible at 30.87083, 121.94169) and found one Reed Parrotbill almost at the end of the path at (30.8781,121.9425). There were quite a few Pallas Reed Buntings around as well along the path. We checked the ponds between the hotel and the Parrotbill trail and only saw a few Falcated Ducks directly behind the hotel. Since we didn’t have much time we didn’t check out more ponds, reeds or mudflats. The area is especially good in migration with lots of species possible.

Target birds Reed Parrotbill, Pallas Reed Bunting.

ANNOTATED SPECIES LISTWe have tried to accurately indicate the proper subspecies for all our observations, usually literature-based on geographic location (IOC World Bird List version 9.2). We tried to keep detailed notes throughout the trip but especially commoner species might not have been written down daily. Triplist generated with iGoterra trips, see www.igoterra.com for details.
