It also will be the site of a twisted and rusted piece of metal I-beam that was recovered from the World Trade Center site after the terrorist attack, along with the 9-11 Memorial Bench already in place there that was donated by the Baptist Church. Individual memorial benches are expected to be added as well, the first of them in memory of Thomas Bluto. Eventually, the fountain will be lighted, but for the moment it will operate only in daylight hours. The ornate fountain is about eight feet tall, with two spill basins for water to cascade over, a pineapple top, and a whimsical base that has otters peering through bullrushes. At the time it was built, the Graded School was one of the largest and most impressive in the state. It also was considered a progressive idea, since it was an early attempt to consolidate many small neighborhood schools into a single large and well-equipped one. Although called the “Graded School,” it also housed the high school until 1914, and for a time also included a “Normal School” where high school graduates, most of them women, were trained to become teachers.
“The fountain is important to Bennington for several reasons,” says Jerry Albert, who helped steer the Rotary Club’s project. “It’s older than the battle monument, so it’s historic in its own right. It’s a reminder of Bennington’s com-mitment to education.”
The restoration project grew out of a Bennington Rotary Club luncheon more than two years ago at which Robert Matteson was talking about Bennington in years past and mentioned that he missed the fountains that had disappeared one by one. After that talk, the Surdam family offered to donate the fountain back to the community, and the Rotary Club voted to take on the fountain restoration as a project.
Such fountains were common in the Victorian era. There were private fountains at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington; at the Henry Putnam home; at the G.S. Bradford home; and at the Everett Estate, which now is Southern Vermont College. There also was a foun-tain installed in 1866 at the Hunt estate at Maple Grove, which later became the Veterans’ Home, that drew water from Battles Brook, 6,600 feet away. The thirty foot drop from the brook down to Maple Grove allowed the grav-ity-fed fountain to have enough
Medieval Music at June 6 Concert The Woodbinde Medieval Band will perform the “Sad Songs, Love
Songs, and Spring Songs” from the Middle Ages and Renaissance at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, June 6, at 4 p.m.
Musicians Eric Buddington, Susan Matsui and Marc Simpson will be joined by mezzo-soprano Robin Lehleitner to perform a program they call “I Saw My Lady Weepe.”
Donations will be accepted during the concert. Woodbinde is a trio playing medieval and renaissance instruments
(rebec, hurdy-gurdy, gemshorn, harp, recorders, flute, and drum). Robin Lehleitner will join the trio to sing music from the 13th to the early 17th centuries. Together they will present songs of the vernal season, songs of love, and – inevitably linked to these – sad songs. They have selected works by composers from across Europe, including music by Guillaume de Machaut, Francesco Landini, Josquin des Prez, Ludwig Senfl, and John Dowland.
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is at 108 School Street in downtown Bennington. The concert will be followed, on June 13, by Mary Migliozzi and Friends, with a performance of jazz, folk and blues; and on June 20 by Abby Newton and Celtic Crossing.

Readsboro Community Library Perennial Swap/Book Sale
Readsboro Community Library’s annual perennial swap will be held Saturday, May 29, 9 to 11 a.m. on the lawn of the Readsboro Historical Society. Come swap a plant or purchase a plant from the many varieties of perennial plants from local gardens. The library is seeking donations of plants from local gardeners for the sale. This year’s students from HFCS were Stephanie Waldron (9th grade), Brandon Wong (10th grade), Lacy Janis (11th grade) and Tabitha Barber (12th grade). St. Mary’s is also invited and their students were Zachary Case and Gretchen Girdzis. Each child invites their families, teachers and guidance counselor. It’s a super evening to honor the hard work our students put forth.

Cricket, Anyone?On Sunday, May 16, the first shots were fired in the lead-up to the
2010 Battle of Bennington! Seventeen cricketers gathered at lower Willow Park and held the
first in a series of warm-up matches between “English” and “American” sides. Men and women of all ages (many who had never played the game before) joined the fray and contributed to a well-fought match. Unfortunately for Bennington, the father/son duo of Joe and Max Holt almost outscored the entire American side, leading the English to a comfortable win. The good news is that it’s not too late to join the Bennington County Cricket Club and fight for town and country ahead of the Battle Day Test Match on Sunday, August 15. In addition to the Graded School fountain, the public fountains were a large cast iron fountain at the entrance to the Village Cemetery on Route 9, where Stewart’s Ice Cream Shop now is located; a cobblestone fountain in the school yard at the St. Frances de Sales Elementary School; and a granite fountain placed in Old Bennington by the National Humane Alliance in 1907 to provide drinking water both for horses (from the top) and for dogs (from the bottom). That last still exists in a traffic island on Monument Avenue, updated with two bronze lion heads sculpted by Elaine Franz Witten in 1991 to replace the originals, which had long ago disappeared.
In addition to the Rotary Club volunteers, the project was helped by others who either donated time and materials or provided them at cost, including wiring by Hathaway Electric; piping by Bennington Cooling and Heating; masonry by Surdam Masonry and McGovern Masonry; design work by M. in my mind from the Watergate hearings and have become a part of our American vocabulary are “What did you know and when did you know it;” “At what point in time...?” and “...at that point in time...” Of course, there was always the familiar and over-used “I don’t recall...”
The defendants didn’t take the fifth, they just didn’t “recall” the answers to certain questions that would perhaps have lead to the dis-covery of their guilt in the whole affair.
People no longer tell lies. They “misspeak.” I don’t know how they do that. How can the liar think so fast on his feet as to say, “Oh, I must have misspoken a few times about my service in Viet Nam.” Right. How can a liar go to sleep at night? Surely the things they’ve said during the day must be churning inside their consciousness and prevent any rest at all.
This is worse than name dropping or trying to one up everyone in a conversation. Making up your past is incredible. Why would anyone as successful as State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal allow people to think he served in Viet Nam when he didn’t? Why would he see the need to do so? He has been an effective Attorney General for the state of Connecticut for many years. After all the good work he has done, he is sadly diminished to the brand of liar. A misspeaker. I guess that sounds a little less harsh. That’s probably why the word has become so popular
these days. There are so many misspeakers using it.
“Liar, liar, pants on fire!” is out. “Misspeaker, misspeaker, you just get in deeper!” is in.
I just received a press release with the word “intergenera-tional” in the headline. It’s in the Vermont News Guide this week. It has seven syllables and 17 let-ters. The word doesn’t appear in one of my dictionaries, but it is on the Internet. Dictionaries are much like computers and their software...old and outdated before the year is up or the pages even showing the slightest bit of use.
Susanism: Be careful with whom you play Scrabble. They may be on the cutting edge of newly created words.
