THE HISTORY OF GRANDPARENTS DAY

Asitsnamesuggests,GrandparentsDayhonorsthenation’sgrandparents, whoplayanimportantroleinthelivesofmanyyoungpeopleandtheirfamilies. The history of Grandparents Day can be traced back to1961withtheeffortsofMrs.HermineBeckettHanna.Herminemadeithergoaltoeducatetheyounginthecommunitytotheimportantcontributions senior citizens have made, and to the importantcontributions they are willing to make if asked. She also urged theyoungtoadoptagrandparent,notfor1dayayear,notformaterialgiving,but fora lifetimeofexperienceandcaring justwaiting tobesharedwithothers. Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, W.V. is credited withlobbying for a national observance of Grandparents Day. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Thank you to all the parents and students of our Memorial community for a great year of learning! As we begin the transition into summer vacation take time to make a list with your children of all the activities you can do as a family this summer. Be sure to include daily reading, writing, and arithmetic on that list! It’s free and easy! The local Eastern Branch Library is a great place to check out books and spend time reading at the library. Make a family journal of your summer. Be sure to have all members of your family take turns writing. You’ll be amazed at the memories you can create.

MEMORIAL STUDENTS GRANDPARENTS DAY

Memorial School celebrated Grandparents Day on April 22rd. We welcomed our Grandparents with coffee, as well as poem readings from 5th grade students. Our total grandparent count was 152. The grandparents were invited to the classroom to take part in activities. The selected activities included; making photo frames, interviews, surveys of then versus now, reading together, and guided tours through learning centers. The Memorial PTO partnered with Mrs. Murphy to provide each grandparent with a door prize, to show the appreciation and admiration our students have for their grandparents.

ACES East Jackson Memorial students, staff andadministrators were eager to work toward healthier lifestylesonWednesday,May5at10a.m.,ineffortto help the Michigan ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) program retain its record as the state with the most participation in the country. Participants walked a designated route for 30 minutes.

It is hard to believe the 2009-2010 school year is coming to a close. It sure has gone by quickly. We have also been working to prepare for next school year. As you know, the schools will be reconfigured prior to the start of the 2010-2011 school year. Robinson will then have all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms. Students have been especially busy the last few months at Robinson. They have been active through a variety of activities such as field trips, the spring concert, our field day, and other events. We also recently held the Volunteer Breakfast to demonstrate our appreciation to our many volunteers. During the summer, please watch our website (eastjacksonschools.org) for information to help get our 2010-2011 school year off to a great start. If you have any questions, please call Robinson’s Office at 764-1810. Finally, I would like to thank our students, volunteers, parents, and staff for their efforts in making the 2009-2010 school year a success.

2nd/3rd GRADE SPLIT FIELD TRIPS

Our 2nd/3rd grade split recentlyenjoyed several field trips. We attended Rural Days at the Jackson Fairgroundslearning about farmers, crops and animals. We were given two pails to decorate for a contest. Below you will see our decorated pails. We also visited the Capitol in Lansing to see our government in action. We were pleased tohave theopportunity togo toStoryfest in downtown Jackson. We heard first hand how history was passed down generation to generation before therewere books. These trips were wonderful opportunities to see what we have learned from studying in school.

Rural Days pail shows a horse. Notice the barn roof we added. Our pails will be in a contest that will be judged on May 15th. This contest is county wide.

Room 10 planted bean and zinnia seeds. Boy,

do they grow fast!

Rural Days pail depicts a sheep farm. Did you know a sheep farmer is called a shepherd?

That’s us, Ms. Murray’s class, on the steps of the Capitol!

READING MONTH IN ROOM 4 Room 4 celebrated reading month with a variety of fun activities. After reading Green Eggs and Ham, it was time to give them a try. The skeptical, but adventurous students sampled them and reported that, “even though they looked gross, they were very tasty”. Many of them liked them so well that they even had seconds and thirds.

Domino’s Farm Our first graders have been reading about farm animals and different types of transportation for the month of May. On May 21st, the first graders went on a field trip to Domino’s Farm in Ann Arbor. The students had fun learning about farm animals. We started the morning out on a school bus, watched animal presentations on stage and went on a hayride. For lunch, we ate Domino’s Pizza. The bus then took us to the Amtrak Station in Ann Arbor and we boarded the train for Jackson. What a great experience for many of the children who had never been on a train! We would like to thank our parent volunteers and the P.T.C.O. for making this trip possible.
