TROJAN TRACKS FALL 2016 THE NEWSLETTER OF SACRED HEART SCHOOL VOLUME 24, ISSUE 1 “HOME TO THE SACRED HEART TROJANS” What began as a glimmer of hope proposed by a committee of dedicated parents resulted in an amazing, memorable event for our Sacred Heart community. When presented to the Advisory Council in the fall of 2015, the initial goal of Trojan Day was to bring the administration, faculty, students, families, alumni and supporters of our school together for a fun-filled day while renewing our Do or Die spirit and possibly serving as a “successful fundraiser for the school.” With God’s blessing and several months of preparation and organization by amazing parent volunteers, this event proved to be much more than we could have imagined. The day began with a prayer of blessing, followed by a traditional Trojan pride pep-rally and erupting into hours of games, a cook-off, class competitions, a dunking booth, inflatable obstacle course, snowballs, food and even a JAIL for all ages to enjoy! After spending the day screaming BINGO, being drenched in the dunking booth, sweating from chasing the greasy pig and stretching muscles in the Tug-of-War, we concluded with Mass at Sacred Heart Church. And just when we thought it could not get any better, the revenues were tallied, resulting in our Trojan Day event raising an amazing $16,000 for our school. After further discussion with the Administration, Advisory Council and PTC Fundraising Committee, it was decided that the proceeds will remain in the Trojan Day account to be used at a later date in a way which will benefit both the Elementary and High School departments. Also, the decision has been made for Trojan Day to take place every other year. Sacred Heart School would like to thank the following people for all of your hard work and dedication: Food and Beverage: Karen Bergeron, Co-Chairperson; Sarah Parrot, Co-Chairperson; Pat Bergeron, Smiley & Hope Fontenot, John & Tammy Tuminaro, Scotty and Shelly Soileau, Barry and Jeanne Bordelon, Christy Tate, Eddie Parrot and Dr. Nick and Tasha LaHaye TROJAN DAY For the eleventh straight year, the Sacred Heart School Foundation was able to give Sacred Heart School a generous disbursement. In August, Mrs. Dawn Shipp, Principal, High School Department, Mrs. Virginia Morein, Principal, Elementary Department, Dr. Jake LaFleur, Advisory Council President, and Father Tom Voorhies, pastor, were delighted to accept this year’s gift. The disbursement in the amount $25,000.00 represents the earnings on total assets for the 2015 calendar year as well as half the proceeds from the 2015 benefit banquet and auction. SHS Foundation disbursement funds are to subsidize projects that enhance, supplement, or surpass the basic curriculum of Sacred Heart School. This year, the gift will help subsidize a New Roof on the Kindergarten Wing of the Elementary Building. THE NEWSLETTER OF SACRED HEART SCHOOL VOLUME 24, ISSUE 1

“HOME TO THE SACRED HEART TROJANS”

What began as a glimmer of hope proposed by a

committee of dedicated parents resulted in an amazing,

memorable event for our Sacred Heart community.

When presented to the Advisory Council in the fall of

2015, the initial goal of Trojan Day was to bring the

administration, faculty, students, families, alumni and

supporters of our school together for a fun-filled day

while renewing our Do or Die spirit and possibly

serving as a “successful fundraiser for the school.”

With God’s blessing and several months of preparation and organization by

amazing parent volunteers, this event proved to be much more than we could

have imagined.

The day began with a prayer of blessing, followed by a traditional Trojan

pride pep-rally and erupting into hours of games, a cook-off, class

competitions, a dunking booth, inflatable obstacle course, snowballs, food

and even a JAIL for all ages to enjoy! After spending the day screaming

BINGO, being drenched in the dunking booth, sweating from chasing the

greasy pig and stretching muscles in the Tug-of-War, we concluded with

Mass at Sacred Heart Church.

And just when we thought it could not get any better, the revenues were

tallied, resulting in our Trojan Day event raising an amazing $16,000 for our

school. After further discussion with the Administration, Advisory Council

and PTC Fundraising Committee, it was decided that the proceeds will

remain in the Trojan Day account to be used at a later date in a way which

will benefit both the Elementary and High School departments. Also, the

decision has been made for Trojan Day to take place every other year.

Sacred Heart School would

like to thank the following

people for all of your hard

work and dedication:

TROJAN DAY

For the eleventh straight year, the Sacred Heart

School Foundation was able to give Sacred Heart

School a generous disbursement. In August, Mrs.

Dawn Shipp, Principal, High School Department,

Mrs. Virginia Morein, Principal, Elementary

Department, Dr. Jake LaFleur, Advisory Council

President, and Father Tom Voorhies, pastor, were

delighted to accept this year’s gift. The disbursement

in the amount $25,000.00 represents the earnings on

total assets for the 2015 calendar year as well as half

the proceeds from the 2015 benefit banquet and

auction. SHS Foundation disbursement funds are to

subsidize projects that enhance, supplement, or

surpass the basic curriculum of Sacred Heart

School. This year, the gift will help subsidize a New

Roof on the Kindergarten Wing of the Elementary

Building. Sacred Heart School is very grateful for

the generous disbursement and truly appreciates the

generosity of everyone’s donations and contributions

to the Sacred Heart School Foundation.

“ON THE TRAIL WITH THE SOILEAU BROTHERS”

Grant (SHS Freshman), Gavin (SHS Junior) and Gabe Soileau (‘16) were

featured on the cover of Rodeo News this past summer. They are the sons of

Kent (’88) and Sadie Foret (‘90) Soileau of Whiteville, Louisiana. The boys

also have two others siblings, Lainey (’12) and Garrett (’14). Found below is

an excerpt of the article in the Rodeo News in which we would like to share

with everyone.

“I rodeoed and I loved it, “said Kent Soileau. When my oldest son (Garrett)

was 8, I decided he should rodeo and I built a rope pen and got a set of steers.”

Three or four years went by, and Kent realized if he didn’t place rodeo as a

priority, he was going to miss out and so were his boys. “They all agreed to

plow the pen, get some horses and go again.” The hard work paid off and this

year three of his boys are headed to the National Junior High and High School

Finals. This summer, Grant competed in Lebannon, Tennessee. After Grant

competed, they drove to Gillette, Wyoming, to watch two other sons, Gavin

and Gabe, compete at the National High School Finals.

Grant competes in team roping and chute dogging. Grant started competing

when he was at the end of his fifth grade year. He believes that if you want

something, you have to work hard for it, and with that, he practices a lot.

Grant is the youngest in the family of five. Gavin is two years older than Grant

and made the National High School Finals for the first time in the team roping

as a heeler. He went into the Louisiana High School Rodeo Finals in the tenth

hole in the team roping and ended up in the fourth hole going to Nationals.

Gavin started rodeoing in the 8th grade and is now a Junior at SHS. He is

hoping to be a National Champion-and is preparing for it. Gabe is the third

oldest child. “I try to help my brothers in any way I can and make sure they do

everything they can when we practice.” “I want us all to succeed. When we practice, it’s me, Gavin and my dad. My dad works the

chute. Gavin hazes for me and I haze for him and we haze for Grant, who just stared jumping steers. We do all the ground work

first.” Gabe is heading back to the National High School Finals Rodeo to defend his 2015 Steer Wrestling Championship.

Good luck to all three boys as they continue to do what they love. More of the article can be found online at

https://rodeonews.com/trail-soileau-brothers/.
