GENERAL NOTES

TROPIC-LOCK

General InformationThe enclosed roofing system information and details are a design aidand do not represent all conditions. The designer and end-user areresponsible to review climate and environmental conditions such asmarine and salt air, acid rain from volcanic activity, governing coderequirements, and the building use to modify the details and specifythe appropriate project specific materials.

Slope Requirement and Application:Tropic-Lock roofing panels should be installed on a minimum slopeof 3:12 or greater. Tropic-Lock is intended for residential and lightcommercial applications with roof panels less than 30'-0" long.Inquire with HPM for recommendations when panels exceed thislength.

Substrate:Tropic-Lock roofing panels should be installed over solid substrates.

Panel Attachment:Review the Tropic-Lock fastener recommendations in this guide toselect the correct fastener. For the attachment schedule, contact yourHPM Technical Representative for proper clip spacing and fastenersize, type, and quantities to meet the project's wind uplift (negative)load requirements. The details in this guide show two fasteners perclip. A minimum of two fasteners is always recommended althoughthree fasteners may be required based on panel load requirements.NOTE: Concealed and exposed fasteners may be vulnerable toaccelerated corrosion if not specified correctly. Consult with HPMfor recommendations on appropriate fastener types.

Condensation, Insulation, & Ventilation:It is the designer's responsibility to determine the need andcomposition of condensation control materials including insulation, vapor retarders and ventilation requirements. Metal roofing issusceptible to condensation and its control should be carefullyconsidered. Applications over rigid insulation may require solidblocking/framing for installation of perimeter flashings and drag loadfasteners.

Cut Edge Corrosion Protection:Metal roofing panels and flashings have cut edges that are not asprotected as the main panel surface areas which have substratetreatment and paint as a barrier. Left untreated, the effects ofexposure from marine air, and acid rain from volcanic activity willcause a condition called 'edge creep'. The designer should specify theend user/installer field apply a product designed to seal the cut edgeand protect the base metal. This treatment should be applied duringthe initial install and annually as regular maintenance. See HPM'swebsite for information about Edge Seal™, a product developed by aleading paint manufacturer specifically to protect cut edges andretard edge creep.

Flashings:It is best practice to specify all flashings are the same material gauge, color, and finish as the roof panels. Where possible, flashings shouldbe lapped away from prevailing winds. Check with an HPMTechnical Representative if you intend to specify a prefinishedflashing in a material different than the roof panels. The encloseddetails have minimized the use of exposed fasteners where possible. The edges of flashings are shown hemmed to strengthen andminimize the exposure of cut edges. See notes under the 'Cut EdgeCorrosion Protection' section. HPM provides standard flashingdrawings as a reference in this guide and on the website. Projectspecific flashing drawings are generally the responsibility of theinstaller.

Valleys:Valley dimensions must be the proper width to account for slope andrain conditions. Valleys must have positive slope for drainage and bekept free of debris so that water does not back up and intrude underthe panels.

Touch-up Paint:During installation minor scratches may occur. Most conditions canbe treated with an air-dry Kynar paint pen. HPM provides paint pensin colors to match the roof panel system. Touch-up paint shouldalways be used sparingly.

Thermal Movement:Panels and flashings must allow for thermal movement (expansionand contraction) of the materials, especially where long lengths areused.

Underlayment:Prior to installation, an underlayment material may be installed overthe roof substrate. The designer should select and specify anappropriate material. The specified material must have a non-abrasivetop surface that will not mar, scratch, or abrade the underside of themetal panels and flashings.

Oil Canning:Flat metal surfaces can display waviness commonly referred to as 'oilcanning'. This can be caused by variations in raw material, processingvariations, product handling, or variations in substrate and roofingunderlayments. Panels are available with striations, stiffening ribs, orembossments to minimize oil canning. Oil canning is a condition thatoccurs, not a defect and is not a cause for rejection.

Product Warranty:Material options and warranties will vary based on project and sitespecific conditions such as severe marine, or acid rain from volcanicactivity. Consult with your HPM Sales or Technical Representative todiscuss the warranty options for your project.

Technical Assistance:Contact your HPM Sales or Technical Representative for moreinformation and assistance when selecting a custom metal roofsystem.
