from the editorSpring is here and the bluebonnets are blooming! Each time I drive down 96 in League City and seethe kids running through the bluebonnets(pobably away from mommy's camera) I amreminded about how much I love springtime inTexas. I, for one, have always taken advantage ofhow great our state is and even better, our littlecommunity.

Many of us,myself included, grewup in this area, went away to college and came home. Becausethis is home. And I am so proud to be a part of agroup ofwomenwho are committed to enrichingourcommunityandmaking it abetterplace to liveand serve.

As this league yearwraps up, that's right, only onemore month left, it's hard not to think about all ofthe fun that was had and all of the good that wasdone.

Congratulations to the BBTB committee on aspectacular event. I'm sure our wallets are a littlelight and I know my little one has a much cutercloset!

Happy Spring, friends!

Thanks to all for your attendance and participation at the March GeneralMeeting! April is upon us and our annual meeting celebration is just aroundthe corner! Although many are beginning transitions into new roles, we stillhave much to do. May 31, official last day of the League year, will be herebefore we know it!

What a month the Fundraising Council has had! Fundraising workeddiligently for a great turnout at the Boutique by the Bay. The event wasfabulous thanks to theBoutiqueby theBaycommittee, Fundraisingcommittee, and theFinanceandCommunications councils! Theevent couldnothavebeensuccessful without their teamwork to ensure that Breakfast at Tiffany’s, thefashion show and the market went off without a hitch. The Cookbookcommitteeandall of the smilingmembersworking themarket ensured thatwehad great traffic and that the booth looked amazing. Way to sell and promotethe book ladies!

Cookbook is busy finalizing preparations for the upcoming Beachside KitchenTours and thus has begun its transitionwith next year’s Cookbook team. AmyBrown was selected as the incoming Cookbook chairman and Melissa Slimpas the Wholesale Coordinator co-chair. Melissa has assumed the currentresponsibility of wholesale accounts to assist our dearest Hayley Hardcastlewhom is taking a break to tend to her new bundle of joy. We requestmembership’s assistance with opening new wholesale accounts instead ofreopening current accounts. Those are being serviced and details will beannounced at the April General Meeting. The committee has securedwonderful kitchens for the tour (many thanks to those that volunteeredhomes!). The Tour is going to be fantastic so help spread the word. There areplenty of tickets available and can be purchased directly from the website!

The Community Assistance Fund (CAF) provides our league with a way to respond to theshort-term, immediate fundingneedsof eligiblenon-profit agencies inGalvestonCounty, whichmeet specific criteria andguidelines including those of an emergencynature, thosewhich develop or expand a significant service to the community, and those which arefacing the possibility of disruption to their services. Applications are mailed out to non-profit agencies that serve Galveston County and money is distributed accordingly in thespring. Per the Standing Rules, it is a permanent project.

In the spring of 2011, Board approved the recommendation of Community Research/Project Development (CRPD) to sunset CAF and redistribute that money per membershipvote. CAF struggled for several years to get applicants and it appeared that therewas littlevalue in the program. Membership voted to cancel the program and redistribute thosefunds to the Scholarship program. However, Board noted to revisit the financialdistribution this year, the required budgeting changes were never made, and CAFremained within the Standing Rules. Because of this, CAF grants are being awarded thisspring. During the review of these revisions and to ensure this would be done for nextyear, it was brought to Board’s attention that incorrect information had been providedwhen researching to sunset a permanent project like CAF. Because this is a permanentproject, it should not have been and cannot be canceled. Therefore it was not eligible fora vote and the results from that ballot are disqualified.

The Community Assistance Fund will continue to be distributed as before. In an effort toensure thatwe are reaching asmanynon-profits as possible. The current CAFmailing listwill be published in an upcoming edition of theWednesdayWeekly Notes. Membershipis encouraged to review this list and submit any necessary revisions. Members are alsoencouraged tohelp JLGCspread thewordbypersonallynotifyinganynon-profits that youare involved with andmake them aware of the program. Please note that the applicationprocess is available on our website at www.jlgalveston.org under the In Action tab-Projects- Community Assistance Fund & College Scholarships. Additionally, thecommittee will be looking at other avenues for community awareness including othermedia outlets.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Amy Brown [email protected].

Calling all Professional Women: May Event atRonald McDonald House Galveston, Date: TBDWehave been approached to helpwith a specialproject during the Spring mural painting atRonald McDonald House, Resume writing - Asthe Ball High students in the PASS:TIMES cohortcomplete their Junior year of high school, theyneed support to focus on professional skills forcollege and careers. Having a working resumeserves the students as a document of theirexperience, a reflection of their interests, and atool to guide them for what skills they want orneed to develop in the future. For the Spring2012 project, we have set a goal that EVERYcohort member who comes for the mural eventwill leave with a resume they can build on intheir future. To reach this goal, we need support from JLGCvolunteers who (alongwith their laptop) can sitone-on-one with students to help themdocument theiracademic, extra-curricular, andcivic engagement experience. PASS:TIMEShas abasic resume for the volunteers to use, and wewill provide a quick “tips” discussion for thevolunteers before they begin working with thestudents. The studentswill come out to paint themural; they will leave with civic engagementexperience AND a resume documenting theirwork! Our hope is that we might find 3-4 extra

volunteers to support us so that we can supportthe students with this life skill. *If we havemorevolunteers, we will expand the student supportto include interviewing skills. The idealvolunteer would have the followingbackground:

• A personal laptop they can bring to theevent (required)• Strong MSWord skills to use a template, format a document, and save/send thecompleted document.• Personal experience writing or updatingtheir professional resumewithin thepast 2years.• A personal story about how their resumehas supported them in reaching theircollege or career goals.• Experience working with or teachingteens and/or a belief that investing time insupporting teens is time well spent.• Experience interviewing prospectiveemployees is a plus!

Volunteers would be at the Ronald McDonaldHouse at the same time as the mural, but sittingunder the shaded area, in comfortable chairs, andworking for30minat a timewith individualstudents. Time slotswill beavailableon the JLGCwebsite for both the morning and afternoononce the date is finalized. Volunteers would bewelcome to stayafter their volunteer slot topainta little alongside the students they aresupporting in their professional growth. The sooner students begin thinking about theirprofessional skills and keeping a document of itin a resume, the more successful they are likelyto be. Our PASS:TIMES survey shows that thevastmajority of the students in the cohort do notget resume writing support outside of thePASS:TIMES model. Volunteers for this projectwould really be filling a gap that will benefit thestudents for years to come!
