Impact© 7.2 MODELS THE ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION OF ODORS.

• For Environmental Impact Studies of Atmospheric Pollutant Emissions & Odors.

• A range of Atmospheric Dispersion Models including the Gifford-Gaussian and Turner Models optimized for the atmospheric dispersion of odors.

In order to model odor dispersion, specifically adapted & validated models are necessary.

Odor Atmospheric Dispersion• To measure odor, we measure its

perception by the human nose. The nose is excited by the fluctuations in concentration rather than by the mean concentration. Because of its sensitivity, the nose perceives the concentration peaks, which can often exceed the mean value.

• Models used for odor dispersion must thus also take into account the odor concentration peaks, and not only the mean concentration that most models estimate. It is particularly important to take into account the wind eddies responsible for turbulent diffusion.

Tropos Impact© contains the Gifford-Gaussian model developed by ODOTECH INC in order to accurately model the atmospheric dispersion of ODORS.

Gaussian Model• The Gaussian Model is

one of the most widely used models in the world to study dispersion phenomena, notably by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). This model estimates pollutant concentrations at any point in space based on various factors:

1. Wind Speed & Direction2. Atmospheric Stability3. Mixing Height 4. Temperature

Gifford-Gaussian Model(Optimized for Odors)

• The Gifford-Gaussian Model is designed specifically for odor dispersion.

It takes into account:

– plume meandering and concentration fluctuation

– real perception of odors

Turner Model(Optimized for Odors)• The Turner model

corrects the Gaussian model by converting the concentrations computed on a 60-minute time basis to a different time basis.

• This approach is used primarily for odor dispersion based on the commonly used peak-to-mean concentration method.

MUC Model

• The MUC (Montreal Urban Community) model comprises the four formulae specified in MUC By-Law 90 regarding the atmospheric dispersion of gaseous contaminants.

Puff Model

• The Puff Model was designed to simulate instantaneous releases into the atmosphere.

This model is used to predict the impact of an accident (tanker truck, holding tank leak or broken pipeline) to allow effective emergency planning.

Plume Rise• Tropos Impact© 7.2 takes in account the

plume rise elevation by correcting the value of the stack height. In order to effectively evaluate this height, 3 models can be used:

1. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

2. Holland3. Montreal Urban Community (MUC)
