If pink is not your favorite
color, why in the world
would you ever want to
wear it? What does all the
pink mean this time of
year?
Most associate the color
pink with girls, women, the
female gender. When it is
used as the color of a rib-
bon, it stands for breast can-
cer awareness. The ribbon
symbolizes awareness of a
disease that one in eight
women in our country will
face. And if you are not one
of those women, chances
are you know one. It may
be a friend, family member,
or an associate.
October is Breast Cancer
awareness month. Here in
Troup County, we kick off
the month with a celebra-
tion on the last Saturday in
September in downtown
LaGrange. We celebrate
those who have survived
this disease and HOPE for a
day without breast cancer!
We also honor the memory
of those we’ve lost.
This is the 8th year of the
“Paint The Town Pink/Hope
For A Day” celebration on
Lafayette Square in down-
town LaGrange. The event
brings awareness of breast
cancer to the community;
plus, a host of other health
and wellness information
will be available. Free clini-
cal breast exams will be
provided as will vouchers
for mammograms to women
who qualify. “Paint The
Town Pink/Hope For A
Day” events will be on the
square from 9:30 a.m. until
1:00 p.m. There will be
speakers, entertainment and
lots of raffle prizes.
How can you show support?
Join the walk or come to the
square on Saturday,
September 28th wearing
your pinkest outfit! This
year, there is a Western
theme to the event. You can
also decorate your yard,
business or school and send
a picture to our website,
bffl/hopeforaday.com. Or,
buy a sign in memory or in
honor of a survivor that will
be placed on the walk route
to remind the walkers why
they are doing what they are
doing. Or, you can donate
to a walking team. And you
can buy a pink ribbon ad
from The Troup County
Banner for a special pink
edition of the paper that will
go out September 26! Direct
donations will be greatly
appreciated; all proceeds go
toward fighting breast can-
cer and providing support in
Troup County and the sur-
rounding area.
Your action will show sup-
port for a worthy, local
cause. For more information

Wear Pink To Fight Breast Cancer In Troup County!
One of my chores in
the summertime was
cutting the grass. The
one place I liked to cut
was the apple orchard.
It was big and clear
except for the apple
and peach trees. I
could get on that
mower and almost cut
it without thinking
about it. On a beauti-
ful day with the breeze
blowing as long as it
wasn’t too hot. I could
dream about all the
places and the things I
would do later in life.
My dad had just
bought a new Gravely
Tractor. I was enjoying
that tractor. This one
day I had almost fin-
ished cutting the grass.
I saw a movement near
my foot on the deck of
the mower. I thought it
was a blade of grass so
I kept on cutting. I
looked again more
closely and realized it
was a green snake. I
am deathly afraid of
snakes. Well, I don’t
have a greedy bone in
my body. If that snake
wanted to ride on the
mower he could. I did-
n’t care.
I was up and off
that tractor before I
knew what I was
doing. You have seen
cowboys that jump on
their horses from the
back? That’s what I
did except I backed
off. I took off for the
house running and
screaming snake. My
dad saw me though the
window and thought I
had been bitten by the
snake.
After my dad
checked me out told
me I had not been bit-
ten, he went to check
on his new tractor that
he had just bought a
few weeks earlier. He
never found the snake
but he did find his

Calvin, of the "Calvin
and Hobbes" comic strip
fame, once imparted
some timeless wisdom:
"If people sat outside and
looked at the stars each
night," he observed, "I'll
bet they'd live a lot dif-
ferently."
I believe he's right. I try
to sit outside every night
before bedtime to
breathe the night air and
look at the sky. It's a
simple practice. For me,
a time of deep relaxation
and spiritual cleansing.
Year by bewildering year
our world grows more
complex. We crave peace
in our souls. We long for
simplicity in lives that
too easily become relent-
lessly tangled in compli-
cated webs.
One man, David,
enjoyed the simple
things of life. He some-
times took jobs in the
American west at dude
ranches, national parks
and seasonal resorts.
His brother, however,
wanted to entice him to
get a "real" job and live
in a world surrounded by
things that only money
can buy. So David's
brother often sent him
photos of himself enjoy-
ing the so-called "good
life." He labeled his
snapshots "My new
sound system" or "My
new car."
But the photographs
stopped arriving after
David responded with a
picture of his own. He
sent his brother a large
poster with a breathtak-
ing view of Wyoming's

A Good Life
Twenty years ago, I drove a
cab for a living. It was a
cowboy's life, a life for
someone who wanted no
boss. What I didn't realize
was that it was also a min-
istry. Because I drove the
night shift, my cab became
a moving confessional.
Passengers climbed in, sat
behind me in total anonymi-
ty, and told me about their
lives. I encountered people
whose lives amazed me,
ennobled me, made me
laugh and weep. But none
touched me more than a
woman I picked up late one
August night. I was
responding to a call from a
small brick fourplex in a
quiet part of town.
I assumed I was being sent
to pick up some partyers, or
someone who had just had a
fight with a lover, or a
worker heading to an early
shift at some factory for the
industrial part of town.
When I arrived at 2:30 a.m.,
the building was dark
except for a single light in a
ground floor window. Under
such circumstances, many
drivers just honk once or
twice, wait a minute, then
drive away. But I had seen
too many impoverished
people who depended on
taxis as their only means of
transportation. Unless a sit-
uation smelled of danger, I
always went to the door.
This passenger might be
someone who needs my
assistance, I reasoned to
myself. So I walked to the
door and knocked.
"Just a minute," answered a
frail, elderly voice. I could
hear something being
dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door
opened. A small woman in
her 80s stood before me.
She was wearing a print
dress and a pillbox hat with
a veil pinned on it, like
somebody out of a 1940s
movie. By her side was a
small nylon suitcase. The
apartment looked as if no
one had lived in it for years.
All the furniture was cov-
ered with sheets. There
were no clocks on the walls,
no knickknacks or utensils
on the counters. In the cor-
ner was a cardboard box
filled with photos and glass-
ware. "Would you carry my
bag out to the car?" she
said. I took the suitcase to
the cab, then returned to
assist the woman. She took
my arm and we walked
slowly toward the curb. She
kept thanking me for my
kindness. "It's nothing," I
told her. "I just try to treat
my passengers the way I
would want my mother
treated."
"Oh, you're such a good
boy," she said. When we got
in the cab, she gave me an
address, then asked, "Can
you drive through down-
town?" "It's not the shortest
way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I don't mind," she said.
"I'm in no hurry. I'm on my

for THE Good Life,
David aimed for A
Good Life. There's a
difference.
THE good life requires
that we take pleasure in
new things; A good life
requires that we take
pleasure in moments.
To enjoy THE good life
we have to get ahead;
to enjoy A good life we
have to make the trip
worthwhile.
THE good life is sup-
ported by feeding our
pocketbooks; A good
life is supported by
feeding our souls.
Over a century ago,
John Burroughs put it
like this: "To find the
universal elements
enough; to find the air
and the water exhilarat-
ing; to be refreshed by
a morning walk or an
evening saunter...to be
thrilled by the stars at
night; to be elated over
a bird's nest or a wild-
flower in spring -- these
are some of the rewards
of the simple life." I
call it a good life.
I don't want to collect
more stuff at the
expense of collecting
memories. And I don't
want to let making a
buck interfere with my
making a difference.
I'm already looking for-
ward to tonight when
I'll sit outside and look
up at the stars.

way to a hospice." I
looked in the rearview
mirror. Her eyes were
glistening. "I don't have
any family left," she con-
tinued. "The doctor says
I don't have very long."
I quietly reached over
and shut off the meter.
"What route would you
like me to take?" I asked.
For the next two hours,
we drove through the
city. She showed me the
building where she had
once worked as an eleva-
tor operator. We drove
through the neighbor-
hood where she and her
husband had lived when
they were newlyweds.
She had me pull up in
front of a furniture ware-
house that had once been
a ballroom where she
had gone dancing as a
girl. Sometimes she'd ask
me to slow in front of a
particular building or
corner and would sit star-
ing into the darkness,say-
ing nothing.
As the first hint of sun
was creasing the horizon,
she suddenly said, "I'm
tired. Let's go now." We
drove in silence to the
address she had given
me. It was a low build-
ing, like a small conva-
lescent home, with a
driveway that passed
under a portico. Two
orderlies came out to the
cab as soon as we pulled
up. They were solicitous
and intent, watching her
every move. They must
have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and
took the small suitcase to
the door. The woman
was already seated in a
wheelchair. "How much
do I owe you?" she
asked, reaching into her
purse.
"Nothing," I said. "You
have to make a living,"
she answered. "There are
other passengers," I
responded.
Almost without thinking,
I bent and gave her a
hug. She held onto me
tightly. "You gave an old
woman a little moment
of joy," she said. "Thank
you." I squeezed her
hand, then walked into
the dim morning light.
Behind me, a door shut.
It was the sound of the
closing of a life. I didn't
pick up any more passen-
gers that shift. I drove
aimlessly, lost in thought.
For the rest of that day, I
could hardly talk. What
if that woman had gotten
an angry driver, or one
who was impatient to
end his shift? What if I
had refused to take the
run, or had honked once,
then driven away? On a
quick review, I don't
think that I have done
anything more important
in my life.
We're conditioned to
think that our lives
revolve around great
moments. But great
moments often catch us
unaware beautifully
wrapped in what others
may consider a small
one.

BRAINJOGGING: OUR MOST POWERFUL TOOL AGAINST
AUTISM, ADHD, ALZHEIMER’S AND MUCH MORE!Brainjogging is a software program that enhances the powers of the brain, devel-
oped by Shirley Pennebaker, M. Ed. of Lagrange’s Camp Academia, Inc. Parents may
actually control the education achievement of their children! Camp Academia staff empha-
sizes daily use of the computer program for five to seven minutes before school and right
after getting home from school, before homework. If they can fit in an extra period in
between, that’s fine too. The idea is to give the “weak” areas of the brain additional calis-
thenics or “jogging.” Ages three to 80 enjoy the enhanced learning and memory benefits
of the workouts.
Brainjogging is totally holistic in nature. There is absolutely no use of medi-
cines in this approach to increasing attention levels, focus, and brain processing. Actually,
many of her students who initially came on medication were later taken off meds as the
effect of Brainjogging took root.
Consequently, Ms. Pennebaker has also seen that the incorporation of the
Brainjogging stimuli with autistic children has had miraculous results. As such, the U.S.
Patent Office issued an additional patent allowance titled: Method of Treating Autism
Using Brainjogging System!
Now Ms. Pennebaker and Camp Academia, Inc.- from right here in our own
backyard, can say that they are the FIRST to have received U.S. Patent Approval for
autism treatment! Recent studies have found that 1 in 57 boys have been diagnosed with
Autism in recent years. There are a wide range of symptoms, and each child is affected
differently. There is no known cure. However, Brainjogging has demonstrated tremendous
improvement in the symptoms in a short period of time. Ms. Pennebaker’s patent is not a
cure, but it does represent a great breakthrough which is medical news!
And what does this approval mean? Parents now have a reason for hope!
And the rest?
Physicians may consider an alternative to medication! Brainjogging is a viable
option to medication for treating children with attention, anxiety, focusing, language, pro-
cessing, memory and learning problems.
The factor that tipped Ms. Pennebaker off to thinking Brainjogging might work
with these children was her normal, everyday work with dyslexic children. “I noticed that
just like with the dyslexic kids, children with autism had difficulty with processing speed
and eye movements. We had great success using Brainjogging with the dyslexic ones, so it
stood to reason this might work with the autistic cases. Everything that I am reading now
is verifying our findings. Brainjogging is working more effectively, efficiently, and rapidly
for diminishing the symptoms of autism.”
Ms. Pennebaker’s work and effort in this field has the potential to become
known to doctors all over the nation. According to Ms. Pennebaker, “This was a very
arduous process to obtain these patents. A lot of time and money went into it, but we hope
that many, many people across the nation will benefit from this, especially if we are able to
acquire FDA approval.”
Camp Academia and Ms. Pennebaker have recently ventured into projects that
will broaden the scope of Brainjogging and its benefits. Camp Academia has seen a dra-
matic increase in referrals by neurologists for individuals suffering from the onset of
dementia as well as Alzheimer’s. Seniors affected by these diseases are already seeing
remarkable results.
Additionally, an internationally recognized Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
Center has asked to have their speech therapists trained to be able to administer
Brainjogging to their patients, thus expanding the amazing benefits of Brainjogging to new
populations. Patients and their loved ones will be able to experience recovery at a much
quicker pace than ever before.
Good bye drugs! Ms. Pennebaker works in a pediatrician’s office in Florida for
one or two weeks monthly. Rather than prescribing stimulant and anxiety medications for
patients, this physician prescribes Brainjogging and cognitive control exercises like those
taught in the home office (LaGrange, GA)! Neurologists and speech therapists are now
referring their patients to Camp Academia for the onset of dementia, stroke, Alzheimers
and other disorders.
The reach of Brainjogging may be spreading as far as Cambodia! A school for
underprivileged children has received a donation of computers, which will soon be
equipped with the Brainjogging Program!
KEEP THIS ARTICLE! The vast scope of Brainjogging and its extraordinary
outcomes are broadening every day! In fact, Camp Academia, Inc. is offering a free con-
sultation for services through October 31st when individuals bring this article.
Camp Academia is located at 1507 Vernon Rd., 706-884-4492.
